Get the Blackstar Command Box Set, featuring all three books in the bestselling series. 1000+ pages of aliens, war, and explosive military space opera action.
They tried to destroy our planets. Our way of life. They tried to send us into extinction. But we, the Coalition, fought them and won. That was a decade ago. We had assumed they were beaten for good.
We were wrong.
They’re known as the Host: a cabal of aliens seeking to dominate our sector of space. And they’re back—with help from a powerful new enemy.
Against their wrath, we must stand. We’re outnumbered and unprepared. If we lose, we lose everything.
But there is hope. An ancient race of long-dead but technologically advanced aliens called the Navigators have a ship called the Blackstar that could potentially turn the tide. That is if I, Kai Locke, a humble ship racer, can find it and learn how to harness its power in time.
If I fail, the Coalition will fall, and the Host will consign us to a distant memory. I refuse to let that happen. I will fight to my last breath for the Coalition’s survival.

This set of 3 books were totally brilliant! This story revolves around an unusual set of characters; some friends, some family; and all of whom were embarking upon a strange and perilous voyage. A voyage fraught with serious personal risks, but also with the very real possibility of universal annihilation for billions upon billions of beings. The story had me utterly spellbound and riveted to my seat! In truth, I didn't want to put the book down, and ended up reading it in two sittings.
The plot line was great! The characters were from a broad range of races, not all of them human. Some of their interactions made complete sense but others were a complete mystery, which made the books really interesting.
The story was full of action and drama. It seemed like one moment you knew what was happening, and then, BAM, surprise! My favourite aspect of the books would have to be the interactions between the various species. There was an air of mystery to many of the species, and although they were described; their otherness was wonderful to read about. Their motivations and behaviour were so different and sometimes unexplainable, which was an aspect of the story that I rather enjoyed. The Yepri species living amongst the frozen wastes of their home planet, were my favourites, and also the Samaghn; which were described as space faring squid like beings, who could apparently use wormholes, which they could create, to travel the vast distances of outer space.
I kid you not, this series was full of fun and little surprises. It's a great read!
The first book deals with the two most important characters in the series and then adds the rest of the characters as the story goes along. The characters are very well developed and are likable. In this book you have the beginning of a war between two empires. You also learn about a legendary race of people who have great power. The second book mostly centers around this race called the Navigators and how they are keeping a great evil contained. One of the main characters finds out that they are descended from this race and is needed to join them in their struggle to keep the evil contained. The third book is mostly centered on the other main character who finds out that they are much more than they thought they were. The series ends on a positive note. The only thing that was not resolved was the fate of the three traitors, which was mildly disappointing. One mistake that the author made in the third book was that he made references to a character that he had killed off in the second book, the references were made that indicated that the character was still alive and was still in charge of the agency that he headed before he was killed. Some of the references I noticed to other science fiction works were, Aliens, Cthulhu, and Stargate. There is also a race discovered in the third book that seemed to relate to the mythical Yeti. I really enjoyed this series and would recommend it.
The beginning is good enough to pull the reader in, providing the reader can tolerate the low grammatical standards for the narrative. As the story continues though, it becomes less believable as new characters and plot are brought into the storyline. The second book in the series was less than the first and slowly unraveled any interest I held in the characters or story. Eventually there were simply too many unconnected story threads, unresolved issues, and no clear direction stated or even implied. About halfway through the second book I realized I no longer cared and returned the boxed set.
I had read the first two books and enjoyed them so was pleased with ‘finale’. And it was good, but at the end there was a flurry of typos and even a wrong name. Still it had to be complicated to try to wrap all of it up. A few loose ends and I thot the royal marriage was phony given what we know of Sen … and what happened to the ice guy? Anyway I’ll gladly read the author again.
Exceptional characters with such an inspired writer
Author Garfield has written a story with a cast of characters that is as diverse as, it is thrilling. A young space racer who seems to be bonded by had luck has only one way to be able to get his hands on a ship to compete in the race that will insure he will have the credit to achieve his dream. Little does he know Date has different plans for him and his best friend Sen, the genius engineer.
While trying to locate his father, Kai is drawn to the Blackstar, a ship of advanced tech. In discovering the uses of said tech he causes a massive Black hole to appear in front of an attacking Host armada and sends them through the veil. Inadvertently his mother is sent through also and he goes after her, setting in motion events that will cause major problems.
Hadfield shares a creative, complex universe, with a strong core of actors, multiple storylines, and demonic bad guys! Trying to figure out the traitor was impossibly difficult, but entertaining! Enjoy!
The story started alittle rough for me but as I read it started coming together. I'm not much at reading multiple story lines but I held it together. A couple surprising twist added the drama needed. And a great ending.
