"If I do well on Sports Day, let me kiss you." Sports Day for their first kiss is starting?! Yamaguchi-kun volunteered to run the relay so that he can improve his reputation and be lovey-dovey with Satsuki at school! To root for Yamaguchi-kun, Satsuki wants to join the cheerleaders, and...?!
Yamaguchi wants to try and fit in with the class for Satsuki’s benefit and no better opportunity exists (allegedly) than sports day. Which leads Satsuki to try her hand at cheerleading and, while she struggles to fit in with the icy beauties, a smooch looms over the proceedings…
I like that this story wisely delineates between wanting to change and the difficulty in actually doing the change. It adds a little reality to yet another visit to sport day, which features second only to school festivals in these stories.
Between that and the whole cheerleading storyline, which starts off from Yamaguchi’s amusingly rampant hormones, there’s a little extra oomph that keeps this from being too pedestrian. That cheerleading one in particular goes hard on subverting expectations and stands out amidst everything else.
The way that Yamaguchi tries his best here, yet can’t quite manage a natural smile, is well done. Once he figures out how to weaponize his reputation it leads to a clever bunch of jokes and it feels almost like an acceptance of self if I squint really hard.
You could also do worse by a story than having your two leads fumble around because they’re trying to do right by one another and actually talking things out, which is never a bad route to take. It juggles the cute and the serious really well.
The end of volume stuff is pretty good too - as nice as it is to see Yamaguchi get a win, the real stalwart is Satsuki, whose own initial failings give way to a really nice moment and a smile that transcends the art work for a brief moment that really lands.
Ishizaki’s apparent ‘incredibly gay for Yamaguchi’ energy (that omake Hawaii joke is probably the funniest thing in the story) remains very high and his unending confidence in himself is great. He really stands out amongst the side characters.
In addition to being a fill-in-the-blanks story straight from the shoujo factory, I do think this story is hamstrung by having some underwhelming dialogue and not-so-great art. It doesn’t sink the whole thing, but it firmly keeps it in the ‘yes, it’s fine’ rather than ‘strong recommend’.
3 stars - I doubt very much that this series will ever feel like anything other than an average story. There are moments here that push against its tolerable mediocrity, but nothing that can yet break through. Still, an above average (not THAT above average) entry for these two kids.
waittt, him covering her eyes to let her not see him flustered and him wanting to see her in the cheerleading outfit is the cutest!! he is so whipped for her. i love when he smiles, it’s so rare that when it does happen, my heart explodes.
i loved that they talked about what they were feeling, so no one was in the dark about what they were feeling. (minor spoiler: him wanting to kiss her if he did something in the sports day was the best!)
the other girls in the cheer team hyping and helping our fl was so heartwarming. i love that all her friends are in the main couple’s fanclub and are shipping them so much.
also why do i see the second male lead rising??
this manga tackles prejudices / bias in such a nice way.
More of a 3.5 star rating; I like that in this volume we got to see much of an effort that both Yamaguchi-kun and Satsuki are willing to put, into supporting each other. I also really enjoyed the last chapter where we got to see Yamaguchi-kun feel so accomplished, but I’m slightly worried with all the attention he could potentially get in the next volume.
These kids are too cute!!!! I love the progression of their relationship. They're not rushing anything and are so freaking cute and innocent. They're in a little bubble of their own making and I don't think that anything right now could burst it. But I'm curious what mild drama the mangaka might be plotting next?
Chapters 13 - 16: This volume was a lot of fun and revolved mostly around sports day and Satsuki trying to do well with the cheering squad while Yamaguchi participated in the relay race to try and improve his reputation with his class mates.
They are so cute. We got a little kiss, it was very sweet. I like seeing a sweet exploration of a first partner when both are so into one another. I really enjoy watching them be sweet and support one another.
The series has a lot of typical shojo manga scenes but I still enjoyed them The MCs are so pure and cute together, it warms my heart. And Yamaguchi's scary expressions always cracks me up
