god I needa start writing this review now. I'm almost done but I'm worried imma forget all my complaints by the time I'm done ;lajksdf. This review is all over the place and also nsfw fyi. I have many thoughts.
I'm so conflicted about this book slkdjfas I had a great time reading certain parts, mainly the development of the main two's relationship (also their sex was hot as fuck don't talk to me ;lajksdf). It was that, sorta hate you but because of this situation we're in, we're forced to pretend to be a couple and do some things that cross the line stuff, and then over time they actually develop feelings for each other. Honestly, very my thing ;ljksdf so it was very exciting for the parts that were done well. I also really like the undercover in a mafia organization thing loll and mc is all the little guys' 嫂子. idk it was fun playing with the gender roles and also dangerous but exciting situation.
I have not read fully described out sex scenes since the mdzs extras LMAO (there was also the one in sv final arc but that's not meant to be hot ljskdfs) which was like, 5 years ago, so this was very refreshing actually a;lskjdf. Every other book has been censored or cut or if you're priest, just barely implied l;akjsdf. In comparison to the mdzs extras sex scenes, this was written very hot imo! sry mxtx. But yeah god damn this authors very good at it lksjdfs I felt it from their previous books but damn bro the aphrodisiac scene had me 🙈 and the the practicing scene a;slkj;dlfkj;alksjdf
okay most of my complaints lie in the characters. I quite like ran qingzhuang he was rly hot lkjsdfs, I liked seeing his softer side come out and also the way he treated the ppl who worked for him. And also the kind of territorial vibes(???) and how over time, you can see him change towards ji ning. Like there were more things he allowed ji ning to do to him lkjsdf (ji ning's very touchy lmao) and you can see that he also starts having feelings for ji ning.
Ji ning is so...... other than when he was also hot lkjsdf, he was at best nothing, and at worst annoying as fuck. All the times that ji ning was thinking like oh no, I'm not worthy of his love, I'm just here to help ran qingzhuang and lin sheng get together, I'm here to repent I don't matter. He meant it in such a low self esteem way i guess but I read it in such a oh woe is me, I'm such a sad, sparkly eyed, poor little mc way. lak;jslkdjfa I hate it. I hated it so much anytime he was like that. It felt so fake and like he was pretending. Very 死装,very 白莲花. Legitimately the best and most accurate phrase I can use to describe him is 白莲花,圣母 all /neg istg. The more interesting moments where I actually liked him was when he actually did shit for himself and was just like, fuck it. I'm gonna go for what I want (ex. when he thought ran qingzhuang was drunk and seeing him as lin sheng but he was like fuck it, imma have sex with him even tho he doesn't recognize me).
You know you're missing the point when you agree with the supposed antagonist when he thought ji ning was more interesting after he became more bitchy and poured water on him. HE WAS RIGHT AND HE SHOULD SAY IT. i don't like lin sheng but i agreed so so so so much in that scene. Also that white swan comparison is actually spot on. Tbf if one of the charas mentioned it, it was probably intentional but swan lake was all that I was thinking regarding their past omg. It's so swan lake, ji ning did everything and he was the one the prince loved but the black swan took away all of his love because the prince mistakenly thought he was the one who he'd fallen in love with (note: interesting to see that swan lake comparison is both in this and in 烧不尽, tho in that one, the ballet swan lake version was a pretty dif story and their story didn't parallel as closely as this)
That whole flashback part was so painful for me to read because I wanted to kick lin sheng in the balls but also kick ji ning in the head because WHY ARE YOU LISTENING TO THIS GUY?? Like okay for the revealing the perpetrators of the dog abuse case part, you needed help from lin sheng. Whatever, sure. So you agree to let him come out and be the sole hero of the case. Sure, I hate it but whatever I guess. But then lin sheng just tells u, 'ur gonna stop bringing ur poor ppl food and I'm gonna bring my rich ppl breakfast for ran qingzhuang'. And you just sadly agree???? hello??? why??? a;ljsdj;flakjsdf I was actually so fucking upset holy shit. Stop letting him walk all over you?? I don't get it, I hate it.
I guess that part was slightly alleviated by the fact that this book wasn't written in chronological order and the horrible misunderstanding past was written in betw all the current development of the main two. If this had been in chronological order like some other books where it goes in the order of, mcs meet in school times -> fall in love, happy times -> horrible misunderstanding -> one of them moves out of the country or some shit -> meeting again in adulthood and resolving all those misunderstandings, I would have lost my shit. Chronologically, this does sorta follow that but because it's written with adult timeline as the main timeline and flashbacks to the past, it's better sorta ig.
Another thing, the writing style is so....bland??? and bad?? I couldn't tell for a lot of the time because it was enough to convey what was needed tbh, but once it got to like any dangerous scenes, it felt like there was a severe lack of good descriptions. Like any tense - not emotional tense, the author's pretty good at that actually, I mean when they were actually in danger - scene like when ran qingzhuang was doing his spy mission to go steal the usb and send it to the police ppl - okay for that one, I think it was more due to the limit of a single first person pov that rly lessened the excitement of the scene but the lack of good writing is also clear in some other places.
Some scenes and descriptions really felt so skull emoji a;lskdjf;las like, ji ning having a dream abt ran qingzhuang crying and apologizing to him at his grave. All I could think while reading that was, what a cheap ass move ;alkjs;dlkjfas. I didn't feel sad or anything just....awkward??? And also sry but dreaming about how sad someone's gonna be and how much they'll apologize to you and say they love you at your grave feels very detached and strangely self centered idk. Seeing it actually for urself in a Christmas Carol kind of way is different, that's like omg I've never seen him like this and this is actually going to happen in my future o no. Dreaming it and feeling bad about smth ur brain made up is not the same lksjdf;a.
I think another thing is, the first person pov plus ji ning's kind of annoying, kind of generic, not distinct personality worsens it. Because he's not very distinct as an entity, and because I'm reading in first person pov and I would never do the shit that he does ljksdf, I get increasingly frustrated. And sometimes I even feel cringe and awkward because he's doing all these touchy things to ran qingzhuang and I'm like ew no don't do that (excluding the hot scenes lkjsdf).
I don't know what happened ;alkjsdf I trusted hui nan que so much actually lksjdf. I honestly really liked 青梅屿 (Green Plum Island),飞鸥不下 (Flying Gulls Never Land),and 烧不尽. First two are honestly ones I would recommend to ppl and I have recommended them. Last one is just very my taste and it's also quite soap opera but I liked all the characters and their misunderstandings was so understandable to me. What happened T^T this book was written after all three of those hhh. One of my guesses is the author is a lot better at writing, normal life drama instead of life being in danger and spy mission and scheming kind of drama. So this is very out of her comfort zone.
My other conclusion after completely finishing the book is that the author is a lot better at writing not normal people lmaoooo. Like neither of the leads in Flying Gulls Never Land are normal a;lsjkdf and she was very good at writing those. And tbh most of the charas in her books have been interesting and distinct other than Ji Ning oop- like honestly, the way she wrote Lin Sheng in the extras with his pov were very fascinating. It might also just be a character preference thing where I truly cannot stand characters whose entire personality is low self esteem and letting other people step all over them.
p.s. that lin sheng extra was so fascinating ;kljasdf I want a whole book of their development and dynamic please. I was not expecting it to be a strange threesome(?) except one of them is dead and only lives on as a beating heart inside of another's body ;LKAJSDFAS. it's so twisted and strange, I love it. but I think if this was a full book, I would want it to go from that and eventually go towards maybe him actually developing feelings for fu ci.

4.5 stars refreshing to read danmei in first person point of view but I failed to connect/ empathise with the narrator (which is the shou). Overall it’s a great story, I love their chemistry and tensions! If possible please listen to its audio drama!!! so peak
