Lawrence Hass PhD (which is how he states his name on the cover of this and other books on magic, as if having received a PhD in philosophy is somehow relevant in this context) is one of the most self-indulgent, sophomoric writers in magic today. His writing is about as sophisticated as you might find in a typical undergraduate student newspaper.
Fortunately - and in direct contradiction of Lawrence Hass PhD's claim to be the author of this work - most of the text is either directly written by Eugene Burger, or is in the form of transcripts of many conversations between Burger and others. Burger was a talented and sometimes brilliant writer, teacher, and speaker. Lawrence Hass PhD rarely rises above the pedestrian and often descends to the didactic and juvenile.
If I had the energy I would go through the book with a broad-tip Sharpie and redact all the commentaries, interruptions, and condescending admonitions from Lawrence Hass PhD.
The content from Burger is absolutely outstanding. This book will be essential reading for magicians for years to come. I will return to it frequently to learn more from this master of the art. I give this book my highest recommendation with a caveat that the bits written by Lawrence Hass PhD may set your teeth on edge.
Robin Dawes, PhD (my doctorate is in Theoretical Computer Science ... which is also not relevant in this context, but if Lawrence Hass PhD wants to flaunt his doctorate, I'm going to mention mine too!)
