Kress and Brohn, a young Emergent couple with techno-genetically enhanced abilities, embark on a quest to infiltrate the Cult of the Devoted in the skyscraping arcology in the middle of what’s left of Denver, Colorado. When Brohn mysteriously vanishes early in their mission, Kress—accompanied by Render, her psychically-connected raven companion—is forced to undertake a perilous journey through a danger-filled, post-apocalyptic city to find him and get him back.
In this high-stakes adventure, inspired by Homer’s epic The Odyssey, Kress must battle killers, con artists, gangsters, giants, and ghosts, and will literally go through Hell to find the man she loves.

This book was so hard to get through, I wanted to DNF so bad but i always finish books. Why is this series still going? I don’t even know but this was just a waste of time, and i didn’t even understand what was going on half the time. two more books left
This was nearly a one star for me and I forced myself to finish. First, it started off extremely dark, which is fine, but it was just sinister and gruesome. Second, I’m annoyed that Kress is suddenly being painted as this weakling girl who can’t exist or thrive without a boy. She went from being strong and capable to needy and indecisive. Third, I have no idea what this book has to do with the entirety of the series. It’s like Riley recently read the Odyssey and tried to adapt it into her own story, which just creates a confusing and unnecessary timeline. It felt so out of place and unrealistic. We’ve got ghosts and giants and the parking garage version of the layers of hell. There’s dreams and technohumans and a power struggle. Then there’s the sudden switch between perspectives and a girl who speaks French. And no one winks this much! Between that and “frack” I want to scream. “They saved our love.” Barf. The series had so much potential and then it tried to be too much and the connections between all the themes are all just extremely frail.
The beginning and the end were brilliant it was like the books we have already read about kress and their conspiracy. However the middle part of the book, just didn't work at all, it didn't work within this book, within the world they are in (for example the parking garage how did that work?) and it didn't fit within he rest if the series before this book. Plus the same trick was used 4 times in this book and it got a bit boring. I really wanted to like this book as I have enjoyed all 12 books before this one, however I don't think trying to adapt the story to fit the Odyssey by Homer worked at all.
