4.5 STARS Excellent introduction to the wide world of bugs for young readers. I would have given this five stars if it had included a Bibliography and suggestions for further reading and study. No works are cited, though the title page does credit, "Bug Expert, Barbara Taylor."
The illustrations here are delightful. I love that they are fairly accurate representations of the various insects, have a slight hint of whimsy, and don't make the critters too scary looking -- for those of us still easing into our appreciation of bugs, this is really helpful! ;-)
The text is engaging and informative while still being manageable for young audiences. My five-year-old was perfectly attentive while my eight-year-old still found it absorbing and even I learned a few things.
Highly recommend this for those starting off on their study of the world of bugs and beyond. Budding etymologists will learn many important tidbits. The "Bug Family Tree" at the beginning of the book is excellent for explaining the different classifications and how to tell the difference when you find a creepy crawly:
*Insects have a body in three parts; two, four or no wings; feelers.
*Snails and slugs have one squishy "foot"; feelers; a shell that keeps a snail safe; the scientific name is "gastropods"
*Spiders have eight legs; no wings; a body in two parts; scientific name "arachids"
*Centipedes and millipedes have lots of legs; a body made of a head plus many rings, or segments; feelers; the scientific name is "myriapods"
*Worms have no legs, a long bendy body, a mouth at one end, the scientific name is "annelids"
Each two-page spread includes information on specific insects. Book also includes sections on how to spot bugs, house-loving bugs, bugs in your garden, and bugs at work.
I found this a real treat and we will likely refer back to it many times!

Fairly simple yet informative book on bugs. It covers different species, habitat, insect roles and importance of those roles for the environment. While the illustrations are not very realistic, they are not overly cartoonish either, which I appreciate. I think this is a great starter book for preschool/kindergarteners. It answers questions those in the age range are likely to ask. Such as: How many spots are on a ladybug? and Why do ants march in a line?
Definitely a great tool to add to a collection for a parent with an inquisitive child.

Буболечките може и да са малки, но затова пък определено заслужават да бъдат описани в голяма книга! А малките читатели у нас пък също заслужават възможността да се докоснат до издание като „Голяма книга за буболечките“ (изд. „Ракета“), увлекателно написана и превъзходно илюстрирана от Ювал Зомер. Под луксозните твърди корици ви очакват цели 64 страници (при това мнооого голям формат) „всевъзможни буболечки“ - охлюви, червеи, паяци и, разбира се, цял куп най-различни насекоми. Авторът на „Голяма книга за буболечките“ е готов да задоволи голямото любопитство на малките читатели. С помощта на тази пъстра енциклопедия всяко дете ще се превърне в книжен естествоизпитател и ще научи за голямото значение на малките организми. Dit boek kwam ik tegen op mijn vakantie op Schiermonnikoog en heb het meteen gekocht omdat het mij een ontzettend mooi boek leek.
Na het lezen van dit boek kan ik dan ook vertellen dat dit boek ook inderdaad erg leuk en informatief is.
Per 2 bladzijden wordt er een diertje beschreven en staan er leuke informatieve tekeningen bij.
Ook staat er op elke 2 bladzijden een zoekopdracht (o.a. zoek de vlieg, enz).
Het boek is leuk om voor te lezen of om zelf te lezen.
Kortom een echte aanrader voor jong en oud.
Na het lezen van dit boek kan ik dan ook vertellen dat dit boek ook inderdaad erg leuk en informatief is.

Krásne ilustrácie, primerané texty, dobre sa to čítalo, vraj je tam pár chýb, resp. by si taká pekná kniha zaslúžila lepšie textové spracovanie (ako sa ozval môj domáci entomológ :-)).

This is a great book for many reasons and for people of many ages, but especially for parents who hope to never again be awakened by a string of bug questions, ease their groggy eyes open---and be greeted by a giant photograph of an insect in all its zoomed-in glory. The trauma of the average insect book can easily be avoided by introducing your curious child to this pastoral and lovely approach to insects. Highly recommend, even though it does have a few notes on the American cockroach, and my boys (having discovered my disgust of that bug) are now obsessed with that particular page.
The illustrations are gorgeous and cover a variety of bugs (and also spiders, earthworms, and snails). Most pages are on a particular bug, but some are on groups of bugs (pond bugs, bugs on farms, bugs found in homes). The text is limited but informative and fun. Just enough for young audiences to digest. And there are a few "can you find ___" challenges throughout the book, too. My boys, ages 2 and 4, love the book overall.

Leuk informatief boek over allerlei soorten beestjes zoals slakken, vlinders, wandelende takken en mieren. Telkens zijn er twee pagina's per beestje of soorten beestjes met prachtige illustraties en kleine kopjes tekst. De informatie zal vooral de middenbouw aanspreken. Goed te gebruiken voor een werkstuk of spreekbeurt. Lekker kijken en lezen wat interessant is kan natuurlijk ook. Een boek om meerdere keren in de lezen.

Inhalt:
Krabbeltiere – dieses Wort ruft vermutlich bei Vielen nicht nur positive Assoziationen hervor. Aber welche Tiere gehören eigentlich zu den Krabbeltieren? Unter dem Begriff würde man erst einmal an Insekten denken, die mit ihren vielen Beinchen durch die Gegend krabbeln – Spinnen, Ameisen, Käfer… Aber eben nicht nur! Auch Kriech- und Fliegtiere gehören zu den Krabbeltieren – so etwa Schnecken und Schmetterlinge. Aber welche Besonderheiten zeichnen diese vielen unterschiedlichen Arten aus? Haben sie Gemeinsamkeiten? Und worin unterscheiden sie sich? Krabbeltiere finden sich nicht nur in der Natur, sondern auch gerne mal bei uns Zuhause. Aber warum ist das so? Und sollte man sich deswegen Sorgen machen – oder sind sie vielleicht sogar ganz nützlich? Auf diese und viele weitere Fragen gibt Yuval Zommer in seinem neuen Sachbilderbuch Antworten.
Meine Meinung:
Ich bin kein großer Fan von Krabbeltieren – ganz vorne mit dabei sind Spinnen! Von einigen Insekten bin ich auch einfach nur genervt, wohingegen ich andere total schön und faszinierend finde. Aber obwohl – oder gerade weil? – ich so kontroverse Gefühle habe, wenn es um Krabbeltiere geht, hat mich das neue Sachbuch von Yuval Zommer sehr interessiert. Ein bisschen mitverantwortlich war aber auch das Cover, das einen einfach direkt anspricht. Denn hier wimmelt es nur so von den unterschiedlichsten und farbenfrohsten Insekten. Diese befinden sich auf den Buchstaben des Titels, daneben, dazwischen und drumherum. Das sieht einfach genial aus!
Wenn man das Buch aufklappt, gelangt man zunächst einmal zum Inhaltsverzeichnis. Da steht nicht etwa ‚Inhaltsverzeichnis‘, sondern ‚Wer krabbelt hier?‘ – und darunter finden sich alle Titel der folgenden Kapitel. Jedes Kapitel nimmt eine Doppelseite in Anspruch. Die ersten Kapitel beschäftigen sich mit Krabbeltieren im Allgemeinen. Hier erfahren wir, welche Tiere alle zu den Krabbeltieren gehören, was sie gemeinsam haben und worin sie sich unterscheiden und – für Kinder noch viel spannender – wo man sie findet und wie man sie beobachten kann. Auch am Ende befinden sich wieder einige allgemeinere Kapitel, die sich auf alle oder viele der Arten beziehen. Hier geht es etwa um die Nützlichkeit von Krabbeltieren oder wie man ihnen im Garten, auf dem Balkon oder auf dem Fensterbrett ein Zuhause bieten kann – sehr wichtig, um die Arten zu erhalten.
Im Mittelteil wird es etwas spezifischer, denn dort werden pro Doppelseite einige Arten (16) vorgestellt. Vereinzelt werden aber auch Krabbeltiere anhand von bestimmten gemeinsamen Merkmalen zusammengefasst, etwa ob sie nachtaktiv sind oder im Teich leben. Alle Informationen werden häppchenweise auf den beiden Doppelseiten verteilt. Zu jeder Information gibt es eine dickgedruckte Überschrift und dann wenige Sätze, in denen in einfacher Sprache die Informationen erklärt werden. Kurz, aber verständlich und effektiv. Teilweise werden auch einzelne Informationen stichpunktartig aufgezählt. Die Sätze sind groß genug, dass Kinder ab der zweiten Klasse sie auch selber lesen können.
Das Buch hat den Titel Das große Buch der Krabbeltiere. Dies suggeriert, dass es sich um ein großes und dickes Sachbuch handelt, in dem man nahezu alles über Krabbeltiere, die Arten und Unterarten erfährt. Dies ist allerdings falsch, denn man erfährt nur einzelne Bruchstücke – oft Dinge, die an den jeweiligen Arten besonders sind oder die sehr interessant sind und die man daher vielleicht noch nicht wusste. Allgemeine Dinge über die einzelnen Krabbeltiere wie einen Steckbrief findet man hier allerdings nicht. Daher kann das Buch vielmehr den Zweck erfüllen, das Interesse über die unterschiedlichen Insektenarten zu wecken – nicht aber, ein vertieftes Wissen über diese zu erlangen.
Die Illustrationen sind mal etwas anderes. Sie sind sehr farbenfroh, aber weitestgehend natürlich. Die Krabbeltiere sind nicht fotorealistisch, sondern sehr abstrakt dargestellt – oft mit großen Augen, einem Lächeln auf dem Mund und in unrealistischen Größenverhältnissen. Die Hintergründe tendieren von weiß und dezent farbig bis hin zu komplett farbig – aber immer auf eine natürliche Weise. Auf den Bildern finden sich auch oft Alltagsgegenstände, die den Kindern den Zugang besser ermöglichen oder ihnen eine bessere Vorstellung über Größenverhältnisse ermöglichen.
Insgesamt sind die Illustrationen sehr ansprechend, aber ich denke, sie könnten Geschmackssache sein. Wer nicht auf den abstrakten, fast karikaturistischen Stil von Yuval Zommer steht, der könnte vielleicht nicht so begeistert von ihnen sein.
Einen weiteren Pluspunkt gibt es für die Interaktivität, die sich durch das Sachbilderbuch hindurchzieht und Kinder dazu animiert, genau hinzuschauen und zu lesen bzw. zuzuhören. Viele der Bilder sind sehr wimmelbildartig, weshalb von den kindlichen Betrachtern einiges im Hinblick auf ihre visuellen Kompetenzen abverlangt wird. Um dies gezielt zu fördern gibt es auf vielen Doppelseiten Suchaufträge. Hier sollen die Kinder einige Krabbeltiere suchen. Dies ist gar nicht so einfach – ich habe es ausprobiert. Am Ende des Buches finden sich die Lösungen zum Überprüfen. Dort gibt es auch noch eine kleine Einführung in ‚Krabbeltierwörter‘, die Experten verwenden, und ein Register mit den wichtigsten Begriffen und Namen.
Insgesamt ein gelungenes Sachbilderbuch, das auf eine einfache und dennoch informative Weise einen kleinen Einblick in die Welt der Krabbeltiere ermöglicht. Die Illustrationen sind Geschmackssache, ich finde sie aber ansprechend und sehr gelungen. Für die Zielgruppe von Kindern ab etwa 4 Jahren bis zum frühen Grundschulalter sehr empfehlenswert und daher 5 Sterne.
Besondere Einsatzmöglichkeiten:

Damit die Kinder aber erst einmal einen Überblick über die unterschiedlichen Themen erhalten, eignet sich das Buch hervorragend. Ausgehend davon können sie sich dann mit anderen Werken oder dem Internet tiefer in das Thema einarbeiten. Für einige interessante Fakten eignet sich dieses Sachbilderbuch aber allemal.
Außerdem kann es auch für die Lehrkraft selbst eine gute Hilfestellung sein, etwa um einen Ausflug in die Natur mit den Kindern zu planen. Hier gibt es einige Tipps, was man dafür benötigt, worauf man achten sollte und wo man am Besten suchen kann. Außerdem gibt es Anleitungen, wie Insekten im (Schul-)Garten ein Zuhause bereitet werden kann – ebenfalls ein schönes Projekt mit Kindern.

Οι εικονογραφήσεις του Zommer είναι αληθοφανείς, με αρκετές λεπτομέρειες, όμως η ουσία του βιβλίου κρύβεται στις πολλές πληροφορίες που δίνει για τις διάφορες οικογένειες ζουζουνιών ο δημιουργός: με απλά λόγια, κρατώντας τα πιο σημαντικά στοιχεία, γράφει όπως ακριβώς θα μιλούσε ένας ενήλικας σε ένα μικρό παιδί, ώστε αυτό να μπορέσει να καταλάβει τι βλέπει μπροστά του. Το βιβλίο δίνει το έναυσμα για φανταστικές περιπέτειες σε κήπους και πάρκα. Πάρτε το μαζί σας στην επόμενη εξόρμησή σας και μαζί με έναν μεγενθυντικό φακό ξεκινήστε μαζί με τα παιδιά ένα ταξίδι στον κόσμο των ζουζουνιών. 4.5 Adorable book on bugs. I enjoy reading this book to kids who are wary of bugs. Creepy crawlies are misunderstood.

El Gran Libro de los Bichos es un muy buen libro del género informativo, dirigido a niños y quizás con el objetivo de una lectura guiada. El libro es fácil de leer y es llevadero. Su contenido es completo sin llegar a ser excesivo, por lo que no es una lectura tediosa. Utiliza un vocabulario cercano al receptor y los textos no son muy largos. El libro está lleno de ilustraciones y colores que apoyan la información y ayudan a la comprensión. Lo único negativo es que el libro no tiene bibliografía.
Las ilustraciones del libro están bien hechas para el rango de edad de sus posibles lectores. No son muy complicadas. Son llamativas, bonitas y no tienen colores aburridos, o por el contrario muy brillantes, por lo que llaman la atención del niño. Dentro de la lectura uno puede encontrar pequeños párrafos en donde se le pide al niño que busque algún insecto específico dentro de las ilustraciones de esa página, lo que hace que el lector esté a la expectativa del siguiente reto.

A survey of different kinds of bugs, from arachnids to insects to gastropods.
Not distinguishing between bugs and insects is a pet peeve of mine, but this one clarified that quite satisfactorily right off the bat. There's an illustrated tree showing their various scientific groupings that is quite clever and then different types of bugs get their own page spread with further information on their characteristics. Throughout the book are interactive seek-n-find elements that will let this stand up to multiple readings. The illustrations are fun and colorful, but close enough to the real thing kids should be able to identify specimens in real life after reading this. One of the best bug books out there for kids!

This book gives lots of information in very simple terms, perfect for key stage 1! It has pages on different types of bugs and formats some of the information in a style of a question-answer for questions that children might have e.g. ‘how do bee’s make honey?’. The illustrations are beautiful and are the right mix of cartoonish and ‘cute’ without being too inaccurate. The book is very large meaning it would be perfect to read to a whole class as everybody would be able to see the pictures and the text is large enough for small children to read easily. It also would be a great book to turn into games to engage the children e.g how many spiders can you see on the page.

This is a beautiful, well-done, high quality book. My aunt got this book for my son for his 3rd birthday and we read parts of it every single night for weeks now. It has stunning, detailed pictures and little games throughout it to "find this or that kind of bug" that really keeps him engaged. From this book he's developed favorite bugs and now points out centipedes on our hikes and knows that ladybugs hibernate in the winter. It's really enjoyable for me to read, too. Hands down one of our favorite kids books.

Ok friends, yes I'm squeezing in one more easy-read to reach my 2021 Goodreads goal, but I love these. If you need some eye-candy to browse with your young ones, I think these books are some of the very best. My only complaint is that they are oversize and don't fit on my bookshelf very well. :) But I still give them 5 stars all day long because I think Yuval Zommer's work is unexpected and appealing. It's not just the pictures either, interesting facts are found on every beautiful page. This is one of the many children's books that I wish I could say were my own creation.

This book is a really informative text, written using child-friendly, almost conversational language and is filled with fun facts and lovely illustrations. The book divides the insects into groups, and includes moths and butterflies, beetles, ants, spiders, snails and all manner of creepy crawlies, their habitats, habits and life-cycles. It is quite a big book and the text is set spaciously, interspersed with illustrations, so that the information does not seem overwhelming. This is a lovely book for children that are interested in bug spotting

Great book for its purposes. I wish they had included house centipedes in the section on house-loving bugs. Amazing anyway 🐞

Yuval Zommer has created a masterpiece, I can’t imagine a better book to introduce young children to the science of all the wondrous bugs they encounter. The illustrations have a sense or reality and scientific accuracy, while maintaining a light whimsical feel. Children will be drawn in by the “Did you find...” challenge with locations shown at the end of the book.

A fun, informative book about . . . (you guessed it!) bugs.
This book is packed with tidbits of facts and explanations about creepy-crawlies--mostly insects, but also a variety of other invertebrates like slugs and worms. My kids enjoyed it a ton, though it does get a bit long to read out loud to them!

I love how this book combines learning with active reading. There are lots of fun facts about bugs to keep it educational and the small excersises on the page keeps it interesting and fun to read.
The art style is a bit too chaotic for me sometimes, but that is a matter of taste. I am sure kids will love to read this multiple times

Книгата е великолепно издание за малки и големи буболечотърсачи. Текстът е поднесен разбираемо като тук-там има термини, които са обяснени на децата, а някои от любопитните факти ме изненадоха (кой да знае калинки в космоса). Скритите "игри" с въпроси по изображенията дават възможност да се отдели повече внимание на цветните и изключително красиви илюстрации.

June 1, 2022This beautifully illustrated non-fiction book is fantastic in supporting bug hunts! I have used this book in a Nursery setting as a great accompaniment to forest school and bug hunts. Many of the children have really enjoyed listening to and finding out about the bugs before and after looking for them, making them a bug expert!

Minus one half star ;) for not including a stream featuring caddisflies and their various interesting cases and nets, mayflies and stoneflies. This was a fun book and would be a great one to read to your youngsters.
