Wow, what an amazing read. Unbroken absolutely consumed me, I couldn't put it down once I'd picked it up. It took me through a whirlwind of emotions and feelings, my heart broke in places and reading became difficult but I'm so glad that I read it to the end.
It's true that people shouldn't be in the position where they have to write a story of their survival through horrific ordeals. Sexual assault is wrong full stop, but especially the assault of children. That said, if the positivity that ultimately comes out of this book can help other survivors of the same ordeals, then writing this book was completely the right path to take. I hope I've been able to express what I meant so that people understand me!
All in all, Unbroken allowed Madeline Black to bravely share her story with us, her journey, and ultimately her empowerment. Thank you Madeline 💜
Unbroken is the true story of Madeline Black's life from when she was gang raped at the age of 13 to the present day. It is a harrowing read but also one which is full of hope. Madeline has managed to turn her life around using different therapies and coping techniques, and has found ways to not let the rape define her as a person. The only issue I have with this book is the style of writing, maybe its because I'm not used to this type of direct writing. Sometimes it seemed to me that it was written more as a diary which isn't a style I seemed to be able to get along with. Madeline has obviously written this book herself (without the use of a ghost writer)and I'm guessing it was very cathartic for her to tell the story. She even says in the book that having her story out in public has helped not only her but also other women who have been in the same situation as her. Madeline tells the story of the different therapies she used to help overcome the issues that the rape left her with, sometimes these weren't the most interesting chapters for me but obviously they needed to be included so the reader got a full picture of what she did to help herself deal with what happened to her. It was really interesting for me to read all about the issues she overcame and also her reaction to remembering the night of the rape, it amazed me about the physical reactions her body had, even though at times she couldn't understand why she was reacting as she did. Madeline is a really brave woman and her story will provide hope for other women who have been through the same experiences. She has not let what happened to her define her as a person and that is clear in the book. Thanks to TBC for providing an advance copy of Unbroken for an honest review.
Unbroken is the true and unflinching account of Madeleine Black’s brutal rape and abuse that she suffered as a teenager. It documents the trauma and impact these events had in her life and her attempts to come to terms with what happened. This is a brave, emotionally intelligent, well written and deeply moving memoir.
It is also a story of one woman’s choosing of forgiveness over hatred, empowerment and self-transformation over victimhood that is quite simply inspirational and deserves to be heard.
Madeleine Black what can I say.? Thank you for your terrifyingly brave and inspirational book. If you haven’t read Unbroken I urge you to do as as soon as you can. Perhaps not by the pool or on a plane unless you don’t mind public displays of ugly, snotty crying of both despair and happiness.
My review of this book is short as only a few words need to be said...A book that will stay with me having impacted upon me hugely. Strong, brave and awe inspiring a real insight into trauma.
"For many years after that night, my memories of what happened after he held the blade to my throat and threatened my life were fragmented, difficult to piece together and distant to non-existent. It was too extreme, too violent to understand."
A harrowing, moving and powerful story of survival.
At just thirteen-years-old Madeline Black was brutally raped and tortured by two men. Too terrified to tell anyone after her life is threatened, and filled with shame and guilt, she internalises and buries the ordeal. But it seeps out in other ways and she begins to act out, take drugs and act promiscuously. Every time her parents try to warn her that something bad might happen, the truth that it already has gets stuck in her throat, filled with words she feels unable to speak. Before she turns eighteen Madeline is raped on three more occasions and spends time in a psychiatric hosptial after attempting suicide. She had endured more in her short life than most of us ever will.
"In that moment, I declared to myself that my best revenge on those who assaulted me would be to lead a good and happy life."
But this is a story that is so much more than the horrors she endured. This is the story of how she recognised her trauma, faced it and took the ultimate revenge on her attackers by thriving and going on to lead a happy and fulfilled life.
Understandably this was not an easy book to read. I fought back tears and nausea and even had to put the book down a few times as the scenes depicting what she was subjected to were so horrifying. While that part of her story is necessary, the prevailing memory and message of this story is one of hope, bravery and survival. A reminder that you can survive a traumatic experience and turn it into something good, which Madeline does by not only living a happy life, but also working with the Women’s Aid and Rape Crisis and training as a psychologist.
"I didn't think my journey was so extraordinary, but the more I opened up to people, the more evidence I received to show me it was."
Madeline is an incredible woman. To endure all she has and still thrive is remarkable and I am so glad that she felt able to share her story. I am filled with admiration for the strength and bravery she has shown and in her ability to find a path to forgiveness.
Unbroken is an inspiring and empowering story that you won’t forget.
This review has taken me a while to write, and I'm still not sure that I've done the book justice!
Even if this wasn't well written, which it is, I would still have given 5 stars for the courage of the author.
Madeleine Black was violently attacked and raped by two 18 year old boys when she was just 13, and was raped three more times before she was 18. This book is her memoir, and tells the story of those events and her subsequent journey to recovery. It's a difficult read in places, as you might expect given the subject matter, and it's heartbreaking in those same places. But it's also inspiring and very powerful.
The initial rape is described in detail. I don't consider myself easily shocked, but I certainly was at what Madeleine went through. I cried for that wee girl. I have no idea how she even got up after it - shows her strength even then. For those of you who are concerned, there is a warning before the details are given, and you can skip them if you wish.
She didn't tell anyone about it for a long time, didn't really understand what had happened or why she behaved in particular ways afterwards, and didn't remember all the details for years, so great was the trauma.
Her recovery took years and involved counselling but also some alternative forms of healing. I cried again at how far she has come, and how this book shows that she is so much more than a rape survivor.
I think this is a book that everyone should read. It shows how awful people can be, but also how strong and resilient we can be. And I really hope that this book encourages other victims of abuse and rape to speak out and seek help.
After reading Unbroken I feel quite strange reviewing Madeline's book as that somehow seems inappropriate but I will!
Once I started reading Madeline's story I just could not put her book down, I have been through a barrage of different emotions and in tears most of the way through for both good and bad reasons. This is the account of Madeline being viciously raped and assaulted at the age of 13 and how it affected her and her family in the years after. Madeline wrote in an Authors Note in it to warn of the graphic content about to be unveiled which was appreciated, however hearing her ordeal in full left me gasping and feeling sick to the pit of my stomach that human beings can act that way.
The writing style is very easy to follow and is a beautifully well written account of a lady whom I consider to be a strong and powerful woman with a heart of gold. I was shown that where there is darkness there is also light and the forgiveness take you to that light.
If sharing her story helps even one person it has to have been worth it and although I haven't been in a similar situation, reading this made me re-evaluate my life and pointed me to start to try new things.
❤️🩹Siamo negli anni '70 a Londra.
Black's story of being gang raped at 13 and the decades long healing process from it is something anyone can learn from and be inspired by. Her incredible resilience and faith are so unique and powerful. She tells about different experiences in her life that got her to process her trauma again and 'grow out' of it and realize that she is not what's been done to her. Through building a relationship and having children to various types of traditional and alternative therapy, running a marathon, doing karate and wind surfing (all part of her healing process) and finally writing and becoming a shameless public speaker and author and most incredibly a Forgiver she lead me to reflect on my life and how I handle difficulties and inspired me to become a better person. The book is written without poetic gestures, and it's brutally honest and often in your face and shares openly about the violent rape and torture and the many vulnerable experiences throughout the healing process. I'd highly recommend it to anyone (who's old enough of course).
This is an excellent book about forgiveness. The author went through a TRULY unimaginable gang rape, the brutality was so horrendous I’m shocked she survived. The book covers how this rape along with 3 others shapes her life and how the trauma from the rapes holds her back from truly living. For nearly 30 years she went through different kinds of therapies and retreats to find peace and forgiveness. How she was able to forgive all that was done to her is beyond me, I know she as well as many others say forgiveness sets you free, not forgiving only breeds anger and you end up suffering more but truly this was so horrific I don’t understand how she forgave her attackers. It blows me mind. Even though it benefited her I have no idea how she forgave them but she did. It must take a lot of strength to forgive people who are so devious, it’s not something I think I could do. This is a very dark read and I would not recommend it unless you’ve read other books that are similar in their extremely graphic depictions of rape.
wow, i’m actually speechless, my hat is well and truly off and i honestly commend madeline for still being here fighting sharing her experience with the world. that takes some guts. you are inspirational and you should be so proud of yourself.
this memoir tells the horrific story of gang rape, rape and abuse that madeline went through as a teenager. it is hard to read but worth it.
i went through every single emotion and reaction while swearing profoundly under my breath.
i am really struggling how to write and describe this book, this is not fictional. this is a memoir of true life events that madeline went through. you have to read this whole book to really fully understand.
although shocking, this story is about surviving, hope, healing.
you need to read this book it’s absolutely amazing, i love true life books and getting into the head of those overcoming disastrous and heartbreaking, shattering into tiny pieces like glass circumstances of abuse and rape.
Wow! How do you review a book like this? I’m quite familiar with true life stories and have read quite a few over the years that contain some terrible abuse cases, but this one has affected me far more than others I have read. I can’t even begin to get my head around how horrific “that night” must have been, and even writing this causes me to be upset with the thought of it. Madeline’s story is one I will never forget, but this lady shows so much bravery and courage in how she has dealt with it, that I’m just absolutely in awe of her. This lady is a true inspiration and absolutely proves that no matter what life throws at you, you can overcome it. Sending you lots of love Madeline and thank you so much for helping so many people by sharing your story
It is truly horrific what happened to the author at the age of 13, and my heart breaks for her having to go through the ordeal at such a young age with no support at all. The book charts the effects that the brutal and violent rape had on the author's life and her journey to come to terms with her ordeal. This is an incredibly honest account and it is a story which deserves to be told. Powerful, upsetting, but ultimately uplifting and a testament to the bravery and honesty of the author. The author is a wonderful public speaker, and I believe her determination to speak out will go a long way in helping other people.
This book should never have had to be written. No child should ever have suffered in the way the author did. How devastating that the brutal assault happened. How tragic that her cries for help weren't recognised. How brilliant that by persistence she has emerged from it all, having the ultimate revenge. A story I've unfortunately already recommended after hearing another tragic story. One for every survivor. I wish that it had never happened, but I'm honoured that you've been able to share it.
This book has moved me to tears. The way Madeleine has wrote this is brilliant! She has shown such courage in such a heartbreaking and utterly evil act. She is so brave and to be where she's at now was amazing to read. True hero.
Heartbreaking. Evil Sick to the core
I read this in less than a day. I couldn't put it down. Amazing read about an amazing lady.
I wish her happiness love and light for the future. ❤️❤️💖💖
Reading about Madeleine’s experiences provoked many emotions. It is a powerful account of how she survived the brutality of gang rape and of her difficult journey to overcome the long term repercussions of the trauma. It is an incredible affirmation of how forgiveness can ultimately set you free. I had the pleasure of meeting Madeleine at a book event and was inspired by her positivity and commitment to using her voice to help those who have yet to find theirs.
Such a powerful story, a real example of how you should never being defined by the thing that happened to you because you can always find a way to fight and build a better version of yourself.
It was hard to go through the rape description thinking that this is something that really happened to a girl, that there are really men out there capable of such awful behaviours. Sometimes I wonder what it's wrong with people and this book made me ask that question out loud many many times (without being able to give it an answer).
Madeline is such a strong woman, such a great example for anyone out there, anyone who struggle about something (not just rape), anyone who has thought at least once that they cannot change, that there's no light at the end of the tunnel. Everything is possible. Even loving yourself once again.
CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS Upon starting this i didn’t realise it was actually a non fiction book and i got confused for a wee minute but it was definitely a beautiful way to tell her story. from the very start you are drawn into the horrifying world of a young Madeline Black and everything about the people in her life when she was young made me angry. i was so sad for her and my heart was broken, her amazing journey was something i feel ill be thinking about for a long time after finishing this
