Vampires meets crime detectives... yeah, this was a great story! The author took us from solving one mystery into unraveling new ones that led us up to a conclusion I didn't suspect. I immediately went looking to see if this was a series and must say I'm disappointed it isn't.
Tremeur “Tray” DuChaine is considered a great detective of the Louisiana Bureau of Investigations better known as a Vampyrian agent. He was part of a Vampyrian Unit with his partner, Veleta, to hunt vampires. He was brave and intuitive about his job and the creatures that he was looking for. However, he was part human and part Vampyrian. He lived the life of working for a living as an investigator, having a girlfriend, and the icing on the cake is that he has now been framed for the murders of those closest to him. However that was not always the case.
I gave this novel a 4-star rating. This was a book that I enjoyed thoroughly. There were a lot of twists and turns in this book that kept me anticipating the happenings of each page turn. The author painted a clear picture through words of how life was in the novel’s setting. Some of the events were gruesome as it related to the mangled effects of vampires. However, there were a lot of narrations of different characters that were supposed to be the previous lives of the current characters. I was surprised by the ending of the novel. It definitely shocked me as the outcome was revealed.
Take a journey with Author Jay A Harris as he takes you on a reading ride. You will journey back and forth between Slavery and the Present in the world of the Vampyrian. The mystery/detective / mystery will keep you intrigued and wanting more. The adventure and the quest for blood and the truth are not only squirrelly but make you wonder if you might want be like them. Lets not forget there is Magic and Witchcraft. If you love a good Paranormal Mystery with a touch of reality this is the book for you. Be warned the ending will leave you wanting more from Author Jay A. Harris. I am wondering what is my next read by the Author.
My first real creepy mystery. The read pulled me in rather quickly. It seemed to slow up for me early 8nto the read. The grammar and English is perfect from my outlook. The vampyrian mystery read read, like a Criminal Minds series. I can definitely see a movie or a sitcom from this read. I do suggest a one click for a different type of read. One click.
Didn't see that coming! A page turner from start to finish!
I love a good vampire story and this is a great vampire story. If you love the lure of a Louisiana mystery, with some supernatural touches and voodoo thrown in, you will love the Case of the Night Detective. When I made it to the ending...and what a surprise ending...I wanted more. A page turner from start to finish.
Be prepared for complete immersion in this combination of an old-fashioned detective mystery and a new-age spin on vampire lore. Jay A. Harris has skillfully developed a prolific group of characters in a world where both humans and vamps coexist via a treaty, which, on the surface, seems like a win-win for the mortals. Still, there’s always that underlying terror associated with those that seem like even the most affable vamps.
Tray Duchaine is one of those guys. A Viet Nam vet who returned from the war to his silver convertible Thunderbird and stone-cold fox, Tasha. (Hey, it was the 70s)
But… one trip to New Orleans, the ultimate mystical American city, turned the world upside down for Tray and Tasha, courtesy of a seductive Creole vixen. A half-century later, as the first legit vamp detective with Louisiana law enforcement, Tray is knee-deep in a series of complex, bloody crises, including a plot to frame him for some murderous mayhem ranging from deep-seated revenge to political deceptions.
Harris’s weaving between his character's mortal memories and the current timeline is truly masterful and keeps you attached to the story. In addition, the narrative from various perspectives, running through simultaneous and pivoting timelines, is another dimension to keeping the reader's mind working into the suspense as the motivations of each murderous and near-murderous experience are unveiled.
Yeah... there’s enough tense, bloody horror for fans of standard Vampire novels. However, I think it’s a great spin on the potential for human-vamp relations – especially as the ‘out of the closet’ vamps make inroads into the political life of modern tumultuous America, seducing an unwitting public to ‘feed’... their own agenda. (It will definitely get you thinking about current tides. It will make you wonder if those ancient career politicians currently serving in Congress… have been turned!)
The Case of A Night Detective is a 5-star sensation and a great reading journey. I hope Mr. Harris will follow this with further adventures for Tray Duchaine and the cornucopia of the interesting supporting cast he introduced us to.
Vampires! Author Jay Harris sets the tone right from the beginning. Tremeur“Tray” DuChaine, Vampyrean, Vietnam Vet, and agent for the LBI. Tray and his partner Veleta start off in Louisiana on the Marchand Farm to investigate a suspicious death. In a world where humans and V’s live together, no stone can be left unturned, and V’s are always at the top of the suspect list. Author Harris vividly describes the details of how Tray was turned, the love he lost, the “new” family he gained. From the 70’s to the present, Tray’s story unfolds…deeply. Now, he is implicated in a string of murders, he is the prime suspect. Rayna, Tim, and Casio, all the family he has, will they help him find the culprit? Will he finally tell Rayna he loves her? Will the V council eradicate him first? So many questions and plenty of twists intertwined throughout these pages. A must read for vampire , thriller, and suspense fans a like. Harris does not disappoint!
