Seven Nephilim, one water dragon, four ice dragons, a witch, and two humans. The dining table wasn’t big enough for all of us, but we made do. Extra chairs were pulled up, and everyone squeezed in together, piling their plates high with food and talking.
Father said I was special. I didn’t feel special though.
I just felt sleepy
I hopped out, dried off, and shaved, trying not to look at my reflection too deeply. Mainly because I hated what I saw staring back at me—a man who’d let fear hold him prisoner when others needed him most.
“Caging the shit in my head is safer than letting it run free. Better to lock it away. Don’t dwell on it.” He pulled out his wallet and tossed some bills on the table for a tip. “If that means being numb to everything, so be it.”
“Now you’re dealing with it.” Galen squatted down beside me. When he spoke again, his voice was kinder. “Once you can, get back up and keep fighting. That’s the only way to stop it from crushing you.”
“Sorry Galen kidnapped you.”
Mason barked out a laugh.
It surprised me, and I smiled up at him. The rich sound of his laugh was warm, much like his eyes as they flickered down to mine. Beneath his distrust of everyone, I bet he had a gentle heart. Just my impression of him as we stood under the stars, the dying echo of his laugh hanging between us.
Ever since the moment I met Gray, strange feelings had swirled in my chest. He didn’t feel like a stranger to me. He felt like the sun on my skin after a week of dark skies and rain. Like that first drink of cold water after being in the stifling heat all day, dressed head to toe in combat gear.
He slowed his pace when we reached the staircase, but he didn’t release my hand. His palm was warm. Everything about him was. And it felt like I’d been freezing for so long—for two years to be exact.
Maybe that’s why I was so drawn to him. Gray was like the first break of sunlight after a long dark night you thought would never end.
“You look like shit,” Bellamy said, meeting me there. “Better than being ripped into pieces though. So you have that going for you at least.”
“Yeah, remind me to thank Simon later.”
Galen was with Simon. They were on a date to celebrate their one-year anniversary. They had first met exactly one year from today.😫😫😫😫🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧
“Call Envy,” Lazarus told Alastair, “so I can speak to all of you at once.”
Alastair pulled out his phone and tapped the screen.
“What?” Daman’s raspy voice answered seconds later over speakerphone. “It’s like 2:00 a.m. here.”
“What the hell do you want?” a raspy voice answered after a few rings. “I haven’t even finished my first cup of coffee yet.”
“Be nice, kotya,” another voice said. By the strong Russian accent, I concluded he must’ve been Warrin. The other one was Daman, then.
I then looked at Warrin. He had silver hair with light blue undertones, just like a glacier on a sunny day. Despite his size—which nearly equaled Galen’s—he had a quiet demeanor. Icy, almost. But one look at Daman and that ice melted.
“Look at all the bad you’ve done! You’re nothing but a monster.”
“Perhaps. Yet monsters can love too, can they not?”
He felt like the sun on my skin after a week of dark skies and rain
He was too precious.
Would they ever see me as more than sleepy little Gray?
“Because I have darkness inside me.”
“You? Having darkness? I don’t believe that for a second.”
He then knelt in front of me, a gentleness in his eyes he never showed to anyone else.
It fucking haunted me, both awake and asleep.
“To be honest, I don’t really feel anything these days.”
“That’s even worse.”
“You’re scared. Where you go, I go. End of discussion.”
If you hurt him, I swear to all the gods I will tear you limb from limb.”
“How does it feel to be surrounded by so many hot dudes?” Bellamy asked Clara. “It’s like your own harem.”
