Milá, poučná, dobre napísaná knižka. Neprináša prirodzene nič prevratné, ale zrozumiteľne a v skratke zoznamuje s rôznymi každodennými vynálezmi, napríklad: zips, sušienky, toaleťák, konzerva, dezodorant, ale aj čajové vrecúško, či škrečok :-)

Približne pred sto rokmi výskumníci hľadali liek na leišmaniózu. Je to parazitické ochorenie, ktoré sa šíri po uštipnutí komárom a spôsobuje bolestivé vnútorné aj vonkajšie vredy. Lekár Saul Adler z Izraela hľadal odpoveď v škrečkoch.
Malé cicavce, ktoré sú síce navonok odlišné od človeka, ale vnútri disponujú podobnými biologickými vlastnosťami, sa často používali na lekárske pokusy. Adler dúfal, že ich využije aj pri výskume leišmaniózy, no najskôr sa k nim musel dostať...

50 malých vynálezov, ktoré však ovplyvnili svet a dokazujú, že aj na drobnostiach záleží. Že tie vedia náš život významne zlepšiť. Nie je to prirodzene nejaký reprezentatívny výber, samotná autorka priznáva, že jej "prehľad vynálezov nie je založený na nejakom prieskume či nudnom akademickom výskume. Vychádza zo srdca. Sušienky ma robia šťastnou, v ponožkách sa cítim pohodlne a rada používam kombinovaný príbor. Nebudem sa za to ospravedlňovať." :-)

Sú to také malé príbehy, neraz pútavé, objavné, láskavé a občas aj prekvapujúce.

This book was super cool, It really deepened my knowledge of the little things that just make life that much easier like computer chips, I was not sure how they were made but this book did a great job explaining that. Along with other major inventions that I found interesting, a few of these examples would include the barcode, the modern cash register, credit/debit cards, and velcro (or hook and loop locking device). Overall this was a great book and I would recommend it to anyone who finds those little inventions that you use every day interesting and would like to know more.

Názov je troška veľkohubý, lebo je to populárne-náučná jednohubka. Autorka si vybrala predmety a zariadenia bližšie britskej kultúre. Z textu cítiť inšpiráciu Billom Brysonom. Samozrejme niektoré vynálezy svet nezmenili, ale určite prispeli k tomu, že sa zmenili postoje a prístup ľudí. Polemizovať možno nad tým, čí sú klince dôležitejšie ako Portlandský cement alebo pórobetón (známy ako Ytong, čo je zrejme aj prvá globálne registrovaná značka stavebného materiálu). Diskutovať sa dá o tom, či je dôležitejší tehotenský test alebo antikoncepčná pilulka, alebo či si zaslúži kapitolu zvlášť integrovaný obvod a zvlášť smartfón, ktorého je súčasťou. Ako celok je to zábavné a poučné. Kiežby všetky Pilcher-ové písali podobné knihy. Pre hĺbavejších odporúčam radšej encyklopédiu Civilizácia – Dejiny sveta v 1000 predmetoch.

Nice short stories about the origin of small everyday things. Sometimes a little too British-fokused for a book about inventions that are used all around the world. Also many of the stories seemed to want to include at least one of the following: Stone Age, World War II, the Covid Pandemic.
Actually more of a 3,5 Star case. But it’s a fun little book so I’m being generous.

A series of short essays - newspaper columns, in a different context - about unconsidered but influential items and how they came to be. The subjects range from paper clips to pacemakers, so the criteria used for selection are fairly fluid. Interesting but inessential reading, and somewhat bitty.

I picked this up at the library thinking it would be fun and educational but actually got bored with it very quickly and hardly read any of it. The problem for me is that it is trying too hard to be funny and clever and the little asides that begin each new subject are repetitive and tiresome.
