Did not enjoy at all. The constant idiotic not funny jokes Jared made wrecked this weak story completely

Simplified summary:
Office mundanities disrupted by global pandemic - zombies.

Opening lines:
The overwhelming stench pervaded the freezing air of the office.

Review:
While the overall plot is interesting the characters are distractingly obnoxious and make really frustrating decisions.

3.5 rounded up.

The story is interesting but while some characters are a bit out there in a way that is funny or endearing (shout out to Jimmy Don Booth) the main characters aren't, they're just insufferable. Anna and Jared are deeply annoying whenever they have a moment to settle down. When the action is intense they're okay but the second they start talking they do too much of it and it's just grating. Granted their being annoying might have been done intentionally to show some character growth and add some levity to the story. That being said while Jared is grating he is also a decent human being and not a total creep which after some of my recent reads I feel deserves some credit.

I liked that most survivor groups they encountered were not immediately hostile, it was refreshing. The type of zombies is pretty neat too (chameleon zombies anyone?).

Will I come back to read the rest of the series? I don't know.

Will I ever know if the J-Dog thing was an intentional reference to Hollywood Undead? Probably not.

Taking them out, 1 can at a time

Anna works in a cubicle. Her partner in crime, er, coworker, keeps things fun enough she hasn't gone postal yet. Yet. Although, if Darla burns 1 more bag of popcorn, that day may come. But, otherwise life is boring. Even the brief news report about an explosion in a Russian lab seems same old. Then people start getting sick with some kind of flu. They get better within a week. Or so they thought. Then cities started reporting riots. Only these weren't riots. People were changing. Angry, violent, biting, limbs showed gangrene. But, those were the easy ones to deal with. It was the ones who could hide, think, hunt that were terrifying. And that was before the nuclear sirens started going off.

Spoilers ahead.
Oh. This was good. I loved Jared's humor. And mystery. He seems to know things, things most office drones don't. But his trash sculptures, office pranks and horrible one-liners steal the scene. Anna is strong willed, she is willing to fight- whether it's with a can of creamed corn or a baseball bat. The can earns her an amusing nickname. The mystery of the flu, the changes, the people in the woods that call the biters draug, where did his family end up- there's a lot to think over. Anna got sick. Will she change? She also got clawed. Jared was bitten. He never got sick. It raises some questions. Because some people seem to rot while alive, or maybe the skin changes just look like gangrene? The eyes are a clue. And after some are killed, they change again. It was refreshing to read a dystopian without men hunting women. There's a brief moment where they discuss it as a concern for traveling certain areas but it's thankfully not a theme or plot point. And the way it ends, with the missile sirens going off, after everything else that happened, it leaves you ready to dive into the next.

It's so hard to find a good zombie book since it's either misogynistic to the max or lame af most of the time and it feels like I read all good ones but sometimes one passes by that seems okay enough.

This, I think isn't a zombie book but a "zombie" adjecent book and it's not bad, most characters were okay enough but not really anything special.

The plot felt kinda a little all over the place, with how it developed throughout the story.

That's a shame since I feel if A.L.Masters would have stuck to one thing and scrapped half of Jared's jokes it would have been an amazing book.
Honestly, the worst thing about it was the fact that Jared kept making jokes when the situation did not call for it at all.

I'll read the next one.

I wanted to start a new zombie series and I was intrigued by the high ratings that the Salvation Plague got on this site… So, I decided to pick the first volume, and after finishing it, I can say it was a mistake. The book starts off as a poor fanfiction of The Office with mousy office worker Pam (Ana here), being in love with the office slacker/prankster Jim (or Jared here, who happens to also be totally hot and overly ripped by the way). After a few chapters of trivial office romance ('We spend all our breaks and lunch times together, but I still don’t know if he’s engaged to anyone, 'OMG, what would he says if I text him outside of office hours,' etc.), we finally have our zombie apocalypse.

Unfortunately, things don’t improve from there as we now have our two idiot lovebirds constantly making stupid decisions one after the other ('This apparently empty building is covered in blood and the light aren’t working, wanna go check it out with a flashlight?') before getting saved at the very last second by some random soldiers or survivalists (seriously, I think it happens three or four times in the book). There is a very thin plot about saving Jim’s family but since he’s continuously making the same kind of silly joke in the midst of the apocalypse, there is no real tension about it. The last time that they saw one of the characters they are trying to rescue, she was doing fine with a bunch of soldiers… Why attempt to save her then? She would be much safer with the soldiers than with Dumb and Dumbette here who constantly end up in the worst situations because of their poor decision making…

Also, everyone seems to be communication impaired in this book: they made a whole deal at the beginning of the book about Jim using e-mails to send silly videos, using personal e-mails at work, and finally exchanging his phone number with Pam but, once the apocalypse has started, absolutely no one seems to remember that Internet or phones ever existed. When your family is missing, why don’t you attempt to call or text them to check if they’re ok? When you have to part ways with a bunch of soldiers that just saved you, why not ask for a way to stay in contact with them? Other than a radio that is used for a couple if pages and then never mentioned again, it seems that being in front of each other in the same room or truck is the only way people can communicate in this book. Finally, the book is full of typos, I wonder if anyone proofread this one. I don’t think that I will read the other volumes of this series…

a nice suprise

I’d given up on finding good “zombie”, contagion style books. So many follow the same tired formula. Im not aginst tropes, I love some tropes. But what I hate is the hardened ex vet, or hardened prepper badass that so many of this books have. Like literally the same character. Some of these books feel like they’re prepper prn. String men who knew the sht would hit the fan and survived bc they prepared. All while the dumb Gen pop is slaughtered. The stupid normies who thought living a good and happy life was more important then spending all their time preparing and planning for the end of the world. Oh and the Exhaustive descriptions of guns and supplies.
I get so tired of Characters that feel exactly the same as the last books MC’s. I also hate the when these books spent way to much of the story son the bad guys that are a bigger threat then the zombies. (It’s what ruined TWD for me. I mean srsly as soon as they dealt with one crazy guy, bad guy, etc., a new super villain popped up. Like I watched for the zombie apocalypse, so maybe a little more attn could be spent on the fcking zombies?!)
Anyways this book had characters I actually liked, and I’m picky about that. I loved Anna bc she didn’t read like some typical post apoc female character. I even forget she was female at some points, which is what I want. Characters defined by who they are and what they do, not gender. I’m also grateful that there wasn’t a constant threat of rpe. I feel like some of the books have bad guys who instantly figure out what’s happening, then decide to take advantage of the lack of L&O so they can spend the apocalypse terrorizing women. Dudes who seem to be 100% focused on stealing women so they can be their sex slaves. I ofc know in a situation where civilization falls, predators will try and take advage of the lack of cops. But I hate when they occur every few pages and manage to become rpe machines in the first days of the story.
Anyways I really liked the characters, the story is well written. I’m also grateful there was a build up of tension. My fav zombie fic ever is WWZ, and that’s partly bc I enjoy the way the it wasn’t 0-60, normal life to zombies, in .2 seconds. The slow decent into apocalypse. The humor in this book also helps break up the unease. It’s just really well done.
The fact I took the time to white mot just a review, but a long a$$ fcking review, says a lot.
I really hope the sequels are as good.

Let me start off this review by saying that this book (and the series as a whole) is now one of my all time favorites. I will admit that the first book itself was EXTREMELY difficult to fully get into as we spent the first several chapters going through annas day to day life. If i wanted a day to day log, i wouldn't be reading a book to get away from a very similar reality. Reading a very monotonous daily log was the sole reason that I nearly set this book down for good. (I am so glad that I didn't!) Really this is my only complaint! the characters are well portrayed, and they have very realistic and likeable personalities that we as readers can latch onto quickly. Of course we always love the trope of a goofy male character that becomes serious when necessary, and has secretly been in love with the female character who is boring and unremarkable but suddenly becomes a badass.
While the first few chapters start out somewhat boring, the following ones had a tight hold on my brain and I read the book in one sitting. the suspense was thrilling, and let me tell you how much i started to really fall in love with the characters not only as singular entities, but also as a couple. i LOVE books like this that have just the exact perfect amount of lovey dovey mushy goodness in them. Even though we (or maybe just me) as the reader want anna and jared to finally kiss, or finally have some time privately, there is no overbearing or graphic love scenes. The actions of love between the characters is written so subtly yet it satisfies the need to have a bit of romance in a story about the end of the world.
Overall, I have to say that this is going on the list of top three zombie novels, and i really enjoy this author's writing. There are very few grammatical errors, and very few typos which help it be the smooth and quick read that many of us are looking for. If you only choose one zombie series, please let it be this one!

Hello, a little gem.

I'm glad I found this. However, I do have my reservations. It's hard to keep an apocalyptic series going for so many reasons. And as of right now, there is a 5th book to the series.

Anna and Jared have worked on sales team support for a few years. She's a bit of a hermit, and he's a bit eccentric, but it works. It's nice to see their relationship before the apocalypse and how it'll further develop from here. But for, the first book is set to slow-burn as we don't see very much private time between the two, and because of that, they don't have time to explore a relationship. However, it works because it's not like they can break off and insert intimate time here.

I thoroughly enjoyed how the book started and how we can see the virus progress and affect their everyday lives in the situations they were barreling through.

Some of the conversations and situations seemed to go by too quickly. A bit on the rushed side, so I feel we lose some critical plot points that allow for character development. I also wish there were more details about the characters. There were a lot of opportunities to give more substance to all and any of the characters, especially the ones who have more of a presence throughout the story—especially writing in a limited third person.

There were also some editing issues, but it wasn't anything that required a re-read to figure out what was happening.

None of this bothered me enough to take a star away. I'm interested to see what will happen in the second book.

Fooled by the (biased) ratings again :(

My experiment with female author Zombie-type/Post-Apoc books started with the "Until the End of the World" series, by Sarah Lyons Fleming. While I thought that Fleming's series was quite tame compared to the many other books of the genre I've read (all by men, and usually with more of a military type background to at least some(most) of the main characters), I thought that she did a pretty good job and the added "feminine touch" of the romance aspect wasn't too bad. Because of the "Until the End..." series, I figured I'd try some more female authors, thinking that I might find something even better.

Well, next was the Sundown series. Pretty bad... although I made myself finish book 1 (Prepared), and wrote a short review of it here on Goodreads with my basic thoughts.

Basically, this book, "The Turning -- Book 1 of The Salvation Plague," was no better. Actually, the very beginning--the setup and introduction to the two main characters, was decent and held my interest. However, once the plague started, unfortunately, it went straight downhill.

Without dropping any spoilers, I'll just say that most of the book reads more like a tween's romance and that the main female character seems more concerned with "ooooh, does he like LIKE me, or just like me?!" Something tells me that if, suddenly, every other human in the city is trying to rip you apart and eat you, nobody would be very concerned about whether their secret crush might give them a kiss.

This series starts off strong! My teens are readers, but they absolutely devoured this book. They liked it so much they asked me to read it, and now we're reading the set together. This is a stunningly believable apocalypse, in a lot of ways. It feels considered and authentic without being overwrought or preachy. There's even some great survival skills explored by characters you like enough to listen to, which cannot be a bad thing. Author is exceptionally responsive to feedback, and I can't recommend this series strongly enough.

Really good!

I enjoyed this first book in The Turning series a lot. Finished it quickly. It’s an enjoyable and easy read and I’m going to get the second one right now! My only wish is that we will find out how and why this happened. The reason Sean Devilles books are my favorite is because right from the beginning you get the perspectives of everyone, the good, the bad and truly evil. So I’m hoping this author will at least do this in subsequent books. Love the characters, am hoping our injured military man makes it! Buy this, I promise you won’t be disappointed!!

Solid strong female characters

Im flying through this series and will be beginning the fourth today. I love that there are solid female leads. It is rare in this subgenre and I'm loving it. They aren't portrayed as weak or needing to be saved. They are leaders in their own right. I don't much care for romance in my horror either (or really anywhere) and am grateful relationship mush is bare minimum. Thank you A.L Masters for giving us solid female horror leads for a change!!!!

Good.

Liked the zombie story, not the love one, though. Personal taste, but I really hate love stories. In my own opinion, it doesn't have a legitimate place in a zombie novel when it's too omnipresent (and, boy! I was annoyed by the fast promiscuity of the characters)! You bet that if I'm with somebody that call me babe (or shows jealousy), in the first week, that person will be kicked in orbit!

I LOVED this series, great characters, great humor, terrifying monsters!

Loved the set up to the end of the world, I loved the characters. I ended up reading the entire series. She has a good writing style, keeps the story interesting, there’s a bit of underlying love stories in the plot, but tactfully done (no smit lol).

She had character transitions, and they were easily understood when you switched the POV. Good books overall! Would highly recommend if you like Zombie (ish) novels!

My favourite part of every apocalypse is the beginning when things go bad. I really enjoyed this book. The humour of the main characters was great and really drew me into the story. The action, once it started was exciting and I really cared what happened... on to book two because I have to know what's next for them.

From Engaging to Excellent

This series took me by surprise, and I nearly missed one of the best TEOTWAWKI reads I’ve had in a while. I didn’t even rate Book 1 when I finished it, but the story already had me hooked. I had to come back and add five stars! The story just got better and better and better.

So exciting

This book is a lot different than the other apocalypse books I've read. I love Jared and Anna's chemistry. A lot of their banter makes me laugh out loud. I like the group dynamics as the story progresses as well. And the sinister beings lurking at each turn keeps me on the edge of my seat.

I really wanted to love it, as I absolutely love apocalyptic horror, especially zombies. The main character is remarkably ditsy and it was a difficult read, seemingly whenever it was her point of view. As for the main story, I really liked it! I've already started book two. I just wish authors would stop writing such useless, annoying female main charactors.

I'm sure it's someones cup of tea but it was just the wrong flavor for me.

Gonna be honest, I would have loved it if Jared and Anna didn't have a romantic element and been just two goofy mfs antagonizing each other lovingly as friends 😔

Unique Take on Zombie-styled Apocalyptic Fiction

I enjoyed the world building, the characters and the action. This is a good beginning for a potentially fascinating series.
I'm definitely going to continue, with the hopes that the choppy feel of the chapters will smooth out.
