Kill Job: 1960s London Noir

“I need someone. For a special job. I was told you would be the man.”
He was a tall, middle-aged man, smartly dressed in a dark suit and long overcoat. He had grey hair and grey eyes. He spoke quietly with the cool authority of an army officer or a psychopath.

I was trying to imagine the sort of job someone would pay two grand for. I knew it could only mean one sort. It was exactly the sort of job I didn’t want.

London 1966
Kennick is a down-at-heel private investigator. Divorces, runaway kids, shop assistants who embezzle the petty cash – those are the kind of jobs he prefers. Dull jobs. Safe jobs. But he has other, more deadly talents. When some people from his past turn up, they want him to do a special kind of job – a Kill Job.

I downloaded this book on a whim when it came up in suggested reading on Kindle unlimited. As the weather was appalling I read it over 2 days. I enjoyed it. A cross between Sam Spade and Slow Horses. Similar humour to the latter but more like River Cartwright than Jackson Lamb.

It moves at a good pace and the 60's setting was backed up with some good period references.

The author has another book with the same anti hero - Bomb Job - not sure if I should have read this first, but will now give it a try.

For a quick entertaining read on the beach, plane or a bad weather day, if you like detective/spy/thrillers. This could be for you.

An excellent, atmospheric book set in the1960s. I enjoyed it so much I've already bought the second in the series.

Kill Job

The tongue in cheek style is interesting for me.
Nothing too gory and I can recognize certain aspects of the period of the story.
Well Done and Thankyou.
