Ran is a 4th grader with a magical family that is too overprotective to the mind of this young sorceress, especially since her mom doesn't spend near the time with her that she'd like. She has a magical pair of sneakers that transforms her little body into that of a grown young woman so why not use them to go one adventures?! Well Ran sure tests her older brother, Jin, and her father's skills at keeping her safe... especially once she meets rich playboy Otaro Mikado, who takes a liking to the grown Ran...

The Premise

Calling Ran and the Gray World vol 4 explosive is an under statement! This is the story I've been hoping would show up. It comes hot and heavy and does everything it can to fulfill every wish we've had for the series! We get a touch of the "correct age" Ran and her lovely friendship with Hibi. We FINALLY, FINALLY see Tamao start teaching her pupil in earnest. All because one of her past students decides to look up Ran... And best of all Zen's crows get a really neat storyline with our new villian... dun, dun, dun Otaro!!

The Buzz

Yeah, Ran and the Gray World vol 4 totally shocks because we were lulled into believing that Otaro had been given a clean bill of health... We knew that he was still plagued because Ran helps him in the previous volume with a nasty nightmare. Well Otaro just because public enemy number one of Ran's family!! Even Shizuka's sisters become involved!! Want is poor besotted Ran going to do?! (I don't know but Otaro sure puts on a good show and comes into his villainous role!)

The Feels

Nio was a really cute character Ran's own age. Sure, she's really fiery, especially when she's writhing with jealousy, but I could truly see her becoming a friend to Ran. And Ran needs friends! Especially magical ones who are quite capable. Ran doesn't even know her relationship with Otaro is terribly inappropriate! And while Hibi is a great friend (who I wish I saw more... at least he features in Ran and the Gray World vol 4) he has duties at home too helping in his parents nursery. Needless to say I hope to see more of Nio!

The Visuals

GAHHHHH the art is so gorgeous and especially so in Ran and the Gray World vol 4 where we meet new people and have some pretty extreme situations. One is meeting the new doctor who is as creepy as the medicine he practices. Tamao and Shizuka sitting and watching Ran and Nio battle was hilarious! And I adored Nio's pet. Plus her fight with Hibi was so well drawn... I loved the tumble down the stairs!! But Otaro and his villainous attacks were outrageously good! You'll need a paper volume STAT!

Ran and the Gray World vol 4 takes the story into overdrive! We finally get mega magic, a mega villain and some mega friendship... Ran is still growing up. She wants romance and friendship as quick as she can, but there are so many obstacles standing in her way. And we get to see more in the next volume!!

There is unexpected nudity that returns in this volume. TBH I was hoping that Otaro's naked butt would be the last we see but I guess the sexpot fan service is just not enough.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

Thanks to Edelweiss and VIZ Media for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. It has not influenced my opinions.

This is a multi-volume series and there may be references to the plot of those volumes... SO READ WITH CARE! Here is my review of 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |

It's amazing how one character can wreck a series. The first half of this book was a great deal of fun -- even despite the fan service -- while Ran simply hung out at her elementary school and home with her classmates and teacher. But then stupid, awful, creepy, lecherous Otaru Mikado shows up and the fun comes to a screeching halt. Sure, he drove some dramatic developments leading to the book's big cliffhanger, but here's hoping he doesn't make it through the coming confrontations or is at least sidelined for longer periods.

After the first volume, I believed that Ran and the Grey World had enough good ideas to make its plot set. Now I'm concerned that that might not come to happen.

One part dedicated to cutesy or humour, one to eroticism, one to the "serious subplot": The content of volume 4 is all over the place, the coherence of each part in relation to the others (or even the necessity of each one separately) very much uncertain.

Although the light-headed tone, accompanied by the dazzling artwork, is still pleasant to read, the origin for my hesitation about the overall success of this story is this: it does not manage substantiality. Two events that had been probed by the previous volumes finally fall into this one, and yet with very little memorability or relevance: Ran's magic teacher finally gives her a more than a couple-page lesson—yet it's more fanservice (distastefully blatant) than anything; The "evil" everyone in the other world had always been preparing for arrives sudden, relentless... and in a much unbelievable manner that also is, because of the way things happen, not exciting.

If the manga doesn't change its approach drastically, and soon, I'm afraid it'll remain to the end as what it is now: a very appealing package with potentially good separate parts, but which fails quite noisily to make something solid out of them and to go beyond a superficial treatment of what it has (the so far brief dramatic storyline is impossible to take seriously... and when does a character really come into the Uruma's house... and settle in personalised development?).

Si va delineando una specie di “villain” e quindi scopo di questa storia, oltre la crescita di Ran. Disegni sempre super!

2.5⭐️

I’m happy that it’s going to be a few months before the next volume comes out because I need to think about whether I want to continue reading this or not. The first half of this volume was definitely a 4 star for me and then it got creepy again and way too jumbled. The story was all over the place with two different points in time for one large event and by the end of the volume I was left confused. Learning more about Ran’s depth of her power was very interesting but it was done in a really weird and over sexualized way. Pretty disappointed with how this series is going because of how much I truly love the magic system and the majority of the characters.

I enjoyed this much more than the last one. Though, the more restrained-ish fan service went out the window and landed right on bare bosoms—pointlessly so. The art seems more consistent than the last volume and synced nicely with the shifting mood of the story. It was lighter, whimsical early during Ran’s exchange with new friend Nio, then went heavy on the inks as bug-addled Otaro attempts to overthrow the village and battles the crows.

The art continues to astonish, but the story and characters are suffering from disjointed happenings that are never really explained. I feel confused or irritated rather than interested and engaged. Three volumes left to go.

3.5, It got rather serious right at the last chapter. The fan service is so unnecessary and detracts from good this manga could be overall.

Mucho, mucho mejor.

I'm dnfing the series.

There is a lot going on and I sadly am not very invested in it anymore.

Also, the depiction of a ten year old in a "sexy" body makes me continuously uncomfortable.

I'm mixed overall on this volume, the story pulls back some of the things that happened earlier w/ Otaro, but because of the sideline off into things at Ran's school it feels abrupt disjointed and kinda unwanted. The events surrounding Ran at school are so much more interesting.

I suppose that *bad* things don't necessarily happen when you want, but it feels like this plot could have evolved better, smoother. I can't imagine having read it serialized, chapter by chapter. It was hard enough to follow what was going on with Otaro reading it all in one sitting.

There's more fan service in this volume as well, so it makes me a lot more self-conscious to read this over lunch or on a full bus. That's a good bit of my available reading time. Heaven forbid someone asks me what it's about...

The art is great, and the characters are really quirky and interesting. I can't help but like it, and brush aside all the things that would annoy me if I thought much about them.

This volume was quite good; the series becomes more interesting when it emphasises magic and action instead of the creepy "romance" between Ran & Otaro. Unfortunately, the book is confusing. The timeline was nonlinear and poorly written: not only does the book have two separate timelines, but Irie has also divided one of them (the battle) into several parts that she again makes nonlinear. The result is that I understand the battle happens after Ran and Otaro meet at the park, but I'm unsure how the battle proceeds. The ending is clear, but the beginning and middle? I have no idea which part comes first.

Huahahahaha. Mantap bgt imajinasi mangaka yg satu ini. Bnr2 kreatif dan tak terduga! Aku terutama suka dgn episode dokter sihir yg mengobati anak manusia yg 'dihinggapi' gurita jamur beracun. Caranya menangani monster gurita itu, unik sekali. Satu kata utk mendeskripsikan seri ini : quirky! :)
