HUNGRY: The Gospel for Eating Disorders
According to research done by the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, anorexia is the most common cause of death for young women in Canada. 1 in 10 of those diagnosed die of health issues or suicide, and among those that remain 50% will never recover.
Something has to change. The lives of too many people depend on the probability of a coin toss. Jesus died so that we'd all be free – not half of us. We can do better than that.
He has done better than that.
I believe we are all deeply, spiritually hungry. We desperately pursue happiness, chasing beauty, achievement, and acceptance in an attempt to fill a void that only God can. This is the story of what God has taught me through my pursuit of happiness - through anorexia, anxiety, and everything in between. It's a story of pain, identity, control, fear, and rest. It's a story of family, friends, and the faith that helped me hold on.
My prayer for HUNGRY is that it will point you to the God who fills. I’ve seen personally that the gospel applies to every part of our lives, particularly what is hidden and painful. In writing this book, I’ve tried to enter into those places. And I’ve tried to point you to Jesus. My prayer is that you’ve found healing and hope, but more importantly, my prayer is that you’ve found Christ.

Just. Read. This. Book.
This is not just a book for those who’ve struggled with disordered eating- it’s for those who have supported someone with it, their friends, family members, teachers, parents, and partners. In this book, Helen vulnerably shares raw details of her own experiences with disordered eating and her journey of supporting her sister recover from anorexia. There is humour, lots of medical facts and stats, some poetry, and an abundance of biblically rooted truths.
Anorexia is the most deadly of all mental disorders. It is THE most common cause of death among young women. Why aren’t we talking more about it?
Thank you, Helen, for so boldly and courageously sharing your story and shining your light in the dark. Thank you for showing readers that there is hope, and that hope comes from our creator, Christ Jesus.

A topic that I have wanted to learn alot more of, from a Christ-centred perspective! I was a bit unsure of what to expect, but I found my own lack of knowledge on the subject to not hold me back too much from enjoying it.
The facts that this book reference will continue to stick with me. I really appreciated the illustrations and explanations of not only the physical effects of eating disorders, but also the kinds of feelings that a life affected by one can bring. I especially appreciated the practical tips for family members who support a person with an eating disorder.
Firmly grounded in Christ, this book is deep, vulnerable and must have required a lot of courage to write and explore the darkest moments of ones life.
