Wade is only nine. He’s had a rough life. And in 1944 Mississippi, there is nowhere for him to turn.
He’s been abandoned time and time again. Staying alive is his top priority. Feeding himself is a close second.
After years of surviving on his own, a kind, a well-dressed man offers young Wade a place to stay for a few days. He tells Wade his wife would be overjoyed to have a kid around the house for a few days.
Whatever Wade expected, this isn’t it.
Luthor and his wife, Gabrielle, are charming people. Or so they seem at first. But as young Wade soon discovers, people are not always what they seem. So did Wade jump from the frying pan into the fire? And if so, will he live to tell about it?
A Winchester County novella. (a stand-alone series) Some explicit content, including violence, gore, torture, and attempted sexual assault
R.K. Latch is a southern gentleman with a keyboard and a wild imagination. He's an independent writer of novels, novellas, and short stories. Most of his fiction centers around the fictional southern Winchester County, Mississippi. R.K. lives back in the woods with his wife and daughter.
I'm the 14th person to rate this and the first to review it (really, people, why? say a few words, authors need that), so here you go. They say you can’t choose your family. That’s crap, some of the best families are chosen ones. And some are…well, different. That’s the basic lesson that Wade, a young street urchin in 1944 South, comes to learn after being taken in into a seemingly nice family with a dark, dark secret. There’s also a nice commentary on the high cost of the kindness of strangers. Really, quite a lot for a nine-year-old to learn, a life-changing amount, some might say. Wade’s life, if he’ll still have it, will certainly never be the same. Can he survive his new impromptu foster family? Read and find out. This was one of those random kindle freebie I like to sample from time to time and, actually, a fairly decent one. At least, when it comes to all the basics, like writing, plotting, character development. The editing needed work. Glaringly so. Even a single wringer through Grammarly would have been good. Other than that, a pretty decent, entertaining, quick read.
Winchester county is WILD. This is the second book I’ve read in the stand alone series and I can safely say I wouldn’t even eat at the Arby’s if I were driving through. Latch blends horror and the emotional pain of loss together into a weird cocktail of violence, gore, and moments that make you say “aw”. A solid read. K thx.
To be honest, I didn’t know what to think of that ending, not saying it was bad or anything but it had a good twist. I won’t disclose any spoilers as you’ll have to read this book yourself. I have to say, I did enjoy this intense little story and it was interesting to have different povs included. I will definitely be looking forward to more stories by this author.
I enjoyed the book and read it in a day. I love the characters. I hope that there are more Legends of Winchester County. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends.
Not what I expected originally. Gory and gruesome at times, good horror short story with some twists. Some editing issues, misspelled words, missing words, etc, but not so many that it wasn't readable.
This is fascinatingly twisted. I don't think I would care to read it again but it did keep my interest. Like morbid curiosity maybe. There were quite a few typos in the second half of the story that caused me to re-read parts in order to understand but the writing style was enjoyable.
So I wanted to think about it before writing anything so I wasn’t just writing a review to write it. Normally it’s hard to find an e book that is as well written as this so I was surprised there weren’t any spelling errors. I really enjoyed this.. the twists and the story itself gave me chills. This poor kid. I loved how the author made the ending such a surprise. I definitely didn’t expect it while reading. Maybe I’m blind but…. Idk I was pleasantly surprised with this one. Can’t wait to read more by this author
Very graphic. Definitely has some abuse triggers. Both physical and sexual. Even though there aren't any actual sexual assaults in the book, there are several attempts and mentions of past assaults. I almost put this one down, but since it was only 100 pages and I was finished before, I knew it. I can only assume the other books in this series are along the same lines, so I'll be calling it quits after this one.

If you love lots of spelling mistakes and awful grammar, this is the book for you. It is definitely not the book for me. The story wasn’t terrible but nothing great either. I just cannot be doing with constant mistakes when I’m reading a story. I want my red highlighter to correct it all.
I happened upon this Kindle freebie and am glad I did. It was a very creepy, psychological read. The characters were great, and the plot was very good. The only issue I had was that it needed some more editing, and there were a lot of typo errors.
I liked the plot/storyline however I didn’t realize it was a horror book. That’s my fault, not the book’s. What I did have issue with is poor editing in some spots.
