The Unsuitable Brides #1

That's Why the Lady is a Tramp

Rate this book
The Marquess of Vegas made a deal with the devil, and now his sons must pay the price.

In order to restore the family fortune he lost, Lord Vegas has ordered his sons to marry money, and to marry it fast. But the four of them are determined to strike back at their father by marrying the most unsuitable brides they can find...

Second son Samuel Rathborne-Paxton cares for three things above all else—his brothers, financial speculation, and his mistress, the fiery Irish courtesan, Alice Woodmont. When he and his brothers hatch the plan to marry, he seeks Alice’s help. Their search for the right bride looks like it will come up short, until Sam hatches the idea of marrying Alice herself. She has been investing right along with him, after all, and Sam is convinced she’s been successful at it. Wealthy? Check. Socially unacceptable? Check. His best friend? Check. Alice has it all.

Little does Sam know...

Ever since leaving Ireland two years before, Alice has been determined to make a place for herself and her son, Ryan, in London, whatever it takes. What it has taken is visiting the beds of some of the most distinguished rakes in London. But Sam’s is her favorite bed, and for some time, his has been the only bed she indulges in. And when he asks her to marry him and spend the rest of her life in that bed, she jumps at the chance. The Rathborne-Paxton family is one of the most respected and upright families in England, after all, and by marrying Sam, her reputation will be restored. Which is handy, since her financial speculations have all failed, leaving her scrambling to pay the rent.

But, of course, nothing goes as planned...

When Sam discovers Alice isn’t wealthy, and Alice discovers Sam and his brothers are determined to destroy the Rathborne-Paxton family name, there doesn’t seem to be any point in them continuing down the aisle. Except for that annoying little problem called love...

That’s Why the Lady is a Tramp is a fun, sizzling-hot, unconventional love story that involves friends-to-lovers, rags-to-riches (and riches-to-rags), dressing like a man, an enormous hat, plenty of trips to the theater, and a happily ever after that will leave you in stitches.

As the second son of a marquess, Samuel Rathborne-Paxton has the wealth of his position and none of the responsibilities, preferring to focus his time and energy on his investments and spending time with his brothers and his mistress. When Sam and his brothers are forced, thanks to their father’s mistakes, to seek brides in a hurry, it is his mistress, Alice Woodmont, sought-after Irish courtesan, to whom Sam turns for help finding a wife. But their efforts prove fruitless and when Alice blurts out a marriage proposal to Sam, he realizes that she is the perfect solution. He gets to marry the woman he loves; she’s socially unsuitable enough to irritate his father, and her investments mean she has enough money to ensure his and his brothers’ security.

Alice has spent the last two years since she arrived in London striving to establish independence and security for herself and her young son, Ryan. That has meant entertaining multiple lovers, but Sam has always been her favorite and her best friend so marriage to him seems like a dream come true. She hopes to gain a modicum of respectability along with the happiness of marrying Sam, and the timing is especially ideal since her latest investments have not come to fruition.

When Sam learns the truth about Alice’s finances, and Alice also learns about his and his brothers’ quest to destroy their own family name, she begins to regret the hasty decision to marry him, though she can’t shake her persistent feelings of love for him, no matter how much she wishes she could.

I should start by saying that I really, really disliked Alice when she was heavily featured in the last book in the previous series and unfortunately, she didn’t really grow on me much here. That said, I can also definitely relate to her struggle for independence and her attempts to reconcile that need with her love for Sam and the need to have him in her life. Alice puts her pride above most things and doesn’t really seem to understand the concept of love or marriage and the true gravity of her wedding vows. She was just very quick to want to leave Sam for everything that went wrong, even if it wasn’t really his fault, and it was always him chasing after her and trying to make her see reason. For me, this just made Alice seem like a stereotypically overly dramatic female and I wasn’t a huge fan of that. For his part, Sam was your typical clueless male, but he tried hard to please Alice and show her the truth of his feelings, even in the midst of some pretty serious misunderstandings and unfortunate circumstances, and that carried the story for me.

Also, this is apropos of nothing, but as the son of a marquess Sam should’ve had the courtesy title of Lord, rather than Mr. and Alice would’ve been Lady Samuel rather than Mrs., not that it matters to the story, it’s just a bit of a pet peeve of mine and I kept getting distracted by it. Weirdly, I also was surprised by this story in that I expected more steam given the history between Sam and Alice, but that's not to say that their chemistry wasn't still pretty strong on the page. Regardless of my quibbles, it was quite fun to see Sam and Alice struggling together, despite any reservations they might have harbored about the solidity of their relationship, to thwart the slimy villain out to destroy them both. I'm always here for a couple facing outside threats or challenges together as a team, I only wish there had been a little less infighting between these two, though the reasons for it were wholly valid, understandable, and relatable.

Overall, this was a fun, madcap story with a villain who seems to have multiple layers that should be fun to uncover over the course of this series. I liked the dynamic between the Rathborne-Paxton brothers, and I look forward to their individual stories as they defy convention and follow their hearts.

When the brothers hatch the plan to marry, second son seeks his mistress’ Alice Woodmont help. Their search for the right bride looks like it will come up short, until Alice suggests they marry. The start of a new series & another steamy, humorous & downright brilliant starter. We met Alice in the Wicked O’Shea series & I’m so glad she’s had her story, I loved Alice who did what she had to do to survive. Sam is adorable, I loved the chemistry between the two. There's also the mystery as to why Montrose, horrible man, is determined to ruin the family & what Vegas’ secret is. I laughed, I was surprised & I was engrossed in this well written page turner I'm now impatiently awaiting the three other brothers' stories
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Wonderful friends to lovers, rags to riches (sort of) story. Samuel Rathborne-Paxton's family is in financial trouble, and marrying his rich mistress seems to be a great way to get out of his troubles. Alice Woodmont (from the Wicked O'Shea Family series) has had to do some things she's not proud of to keep her and her son's heads above water, but things are looking up now that she is going to change her reputation by marrying into the upright Rathborne-Paxton family. But not all is as it seems and Sam and Alice have a rocky road to traverse. Loved these characters, hated the situation they were put in, and was enthralled with the story. Couldn't put it down.

This is a Hit!
This story kept me wondering what was going to happen next. So many twists and turns and yet I could easily follow the plot without getting lost.
I'm so happy that Alice finally gets her happy ever after. Life has not been kind to her before this.
It was very interesting to watch how Sam changed, learning from his mistakes and building a worthwhile relationship, against all odds, with the woman he loved of course!
This story simply sizzled its way along and I am so looking forward to the next one in the series.
Well done Merry! In my opinion, this is a hit!

That’s Why the Lady is a Tramp, by Merry Farmer. This story was a terrific read for me. Sam and Alice characters were absolutely wonderful. The dialogue between the two characters was flawless. I hung on to each word that Alice confessed to Sam.
I could feel her passion. Her love. Her contentment. Her anger and her loneliness in her conversations. Sam was the same way, but his character, I could sense that he was the fixer. He had to make everything right. All the characters were fabulously written.
Even that vile of offending father of theirs. I have to give the writer much respect for putting together and creating a story plot that fit so well with the characters. The very hot and sexual illicit love affair with Sam and Alice wasn’t bad either. Spacing the love scenes throughout the book I thought was great. It actually gave my mind a bit of a reprieve and cool myself down with some cold water. ;)
I enjoyed the entertainment and the excitement of the background story. I can’t wait to see who will be the next brother’s story. Is there a Dean here? Until next time my fellow readers… read on!!

I'm so happy to see Alice have a happy ending. She had it pretty rough - abandoned and pregnant - and wanted to raise her son herself. Glad to see she found a good man who loves her and her son.

Samuel has been "seeing" Alice for almost two years. They are exclusively together but now because of his father's poor judgement and lost finances; he needs to marry. He is sad that he will lose Alice but asks her help to find a rich debutante for him.

He rebels against his father's wishes and him and Alice end up married instead. They can't put their feelings aside - but there is a dastardly villain who wants nothing more than to ruin his father, can they overcome the obstacles and be together?

I really liked this book, great steam by Merry Farmer, as usual, and sweet too. Got to see Maeve and it's nice that she stuck by Alice as a friend. Great book, fun to read.

The story is a wonderful way to relax and take a journey to another time. To follow along and see how a couple come to terms with their situation and find a solution that suits everyone. It has some twists and turns along the way, that only add to keep you turning pages.

Merry Farmer is still a pretty new author for me. I read her series with Scarlett Scott and a few other of her books.

I enjoyed this book. I'm more Regency than Victorian, so a few things read a bit too modern for me but not overly "in your face". I like this story concept. Alice was a great character. Sam was a bit immature at times and sometimes a dick but you can't deny they did love each other.

Overall a good read and I will read more in this series.

The synopsis piqued my interest, but the story itself wasn’t my favorite. I did like Sam, he was a nice change of pace from the usual type of Regency/Victorian MMC—there’s a scene involving an ostrich feathered hat that endeared me to his playful side.

I didn’t have any issues with Alice before in the beginning, but following her wedding she started to get on my nerves. It’s hard to explain, as for the most part I didn’t fault Alice for her reactions in certain scenarios. The things she took issue with were things she should have taken issue with. It was the drastic and impulsive decisions she made in response to said scenarios that annoyed me. She made decisions that would impact her six-year-old son based on her feelings, instead of logic. And whilst I don’t consider her to be a selfish mother, I do consider that behavior specifically to be selfish.

Also, can we talk about how both the FMC and MMC kept spending money on non-necessities when they were both nearing bankruptcy?! Their lack of financial responsibility didn’t fit with either of their characters.

Oh, Alice!

Merry Farmer did it again! She’s an expert at making me feel all the emotions. I couldn’t wait for Alice’s story after her appearance in Naughty Earls Need Love Too. I was surprised that I disliked her for much of the book. I’m not a fan of heroines (or heroes) who have a “poor me” attitude. Yes, I realize your life is difficult, however, you are the one who made those decisions. I do have to say that I liked her but the end of the book. I have high hopes for her appearances in the following books as far as supporting the choices for the other unconventional spouses.

I loved Sam. I think his attitude toward Alice’s situation (being an unwed mother) and his supportiveness was admirable. I appreciated him not hesitating to stand up for Alice and Ryan in public. Ryan is a joy. I look forward to seeing him make cameo appearances in the following books.

I like Sam’s brothers. Dean seems most similar to Sam, but I think he has hidden depths that I look forward to learning more about. I think Francis feels the weight of more responsibility so I hope his partner helps him relax. Joseph is interesting. I wonder if some of his reactions when his brothers talked about women and having families might indicate that he was unsure of his sexuality. I adore the brothers for their protectiveness of their mother, but I hope we see more of her in the upcoming books, especially toward the resolution when the Marquess of Vegas and Montrose get their just desserts.

What a delightful start to a new series! Ms. Farmer has once again captivated me with her brilliant writing. This is a wonderful friends to lovers story that captured and held my attention from start to finish. Samuel's father, Lord Vegas, has lost the family fortune. He needs his four sons to marry into money fast in order to save it. They decide to get back at their father by marrying the most unsuitable brides, and who better to fit that description than Samuel's mistress Alice. We first met Alice in the Wicked O'Shea series, and now she has her own story. She's an independent and strong character and will do what she needs to in order for her and her son to survive. Samuel believes Alice to be quite rich and ultimately, decides she would be his perfect bride. Alice in turn would have a chance at restoring her reputation. Also the added bonus is that they are already in love. And, oh the chemistry between these two was off the charts! But as you know, the path to love is not easy and these two certainly have their challenges. Be prepared for a steamy but sweet romance that has intrigue and mystery all brought together in this wonderfully crafted story. A fantastic start to the series and I can't wait to read the next installment!

Lord Christopher Rathborne-Paxton, Marquess of Vegas has ordered his son's to marry rich brides as they are destitute due to his gambling and past misdeeds. Claiming to be pious and morally sanctimonious Christian he is nothing of the sort.

Samuel, second son, along with his brothers are shocked. So he decided to seek the help from his mistress, Alice Woodmont. He gets her to help him find a bride. While they do love each other, they know this would happen eventually.

Alice asks Sam to marry her which scares Sam at first but then sees the merit in it. While things are going downhill with her plan for an independent happy life with her son, she still thinks she can have that with Sam.

Meanwhile Lord Vegas tries to keep his misdeeds hidden from society and pay what Montrose who wants to degrade and destroy any aristocrat he seems bad. His current targets are the Rathborne-Paxton's.

Will these two marry? Will Lord Vegas reveal his secret?

While we have romance we also have mystery and intrigue in the wonderfully crafted story that is brought to life in detailed description and inventive world building bringing with it the family dynamics and fun, witty banter that will give you a well round story to cherish.

Wow can this lady weave a tale! Alice, whom we met in The Wicked O’Shea Family series, left Ireland and with son in tow and moved to England with Maeve and Avery. After a necesary stint as a courtesan, she became Samuel’s mistress. They fell in love, but the second son of a Marquess could never marry his mistress without causing a scandal. Meanwhile, Samuel and his three brothers had just been informed by their father that he was being blackmailed into bankruptcy by a villian named Montrose, and they would need to marry wealthy women in order to save the family. And so the fun begins. Rebellious siblings; vicious rumors; scandal, scandal, scandal; and at the center of it all is Montrose. This story is a wild ride! It is emotional, humorous and clever, with a mystery to be solved, a blackmailer to be thwarted and a self-righteous Marquess who needs to be put in his place. This author is a master storyteller who creates vibrant characters and exciting plots. This is bound to be a remarkable new series!

Lord Vegas has gotten into financial trouble, and who knows what else, and is being threatened with ruin by a wacko villain known only as Montrose. His solution? His sons will, all of them, take wealthy suitable brides. They agree for the sake of their mother. However, things might not work out exactly the way Lord Vegas wants.

Sam and Alice have been in love since she came to London from Ireland. She is his mistress. His father’s edict gives them the opportunity to marry and they take it. It doesn’t work out as they planned, but when lessons are learned, things change, and they have a chance. Alice has a hard time, and it has made her strong and determined to have a better life for her and her son. Sam accepts and loves Alice and her son, and is good to them, but he needs to grow up a little. This one is a little complicated and holds your attention. There is a lot of fun, some angst and drama. Sam, Alice, Ryan, and Sam’s brothers are strong interesting characters. Montrose is a monster. I await his comeuppance. Great start to a new series. Another winner for Merry Farmer.

Alice is not a tramp
She is however a lady who uses her assets to get what she needs to survive.
She was duped by a con artist and learned a harsh lesson. Her son Ryan is precious and if nothing else he deserves a decent chance to grow up well.
Sam and Alice are fire and gasoline together I suspect that the best laid intentions aside we will find she was pregnant with all of her emotional outburst at times.
Thank goodness for her friends level head in looking beyond the obvious to keep her and Sam from painful words that can wound deep!
I suspected something in the beginning and wanted to shout at the pages where they should focus on!
Love does conquer all! I had a feeling about them when they first met… glad it turned out well there are several detours along the way. A courtesan life is extremely hard. So glad for the HEA. But the reality in that time period was way harsh. This is a light hearted story with lots of humor!

Samuel and Alice . . .

After the Marquess of Vegas lost the family fortune, he puts the burden on his sons to marry wealthy women to replenish what he lost. Instead, to get back at him, the four sons decide to marry “unsuitable” brides. Samuel Rathborne-Paxton, the second son, has an Irish mistress, Alice Woodmont, who has been investing and he believes she has money. So she would be his choice. But the money part is not true. She can barely pay her rent.

Alice’s hopes lean toward marriage to her best friend, Sam, which would provide a stable home for her son, Ryan. Marriage to Sam is the perfect solution where she would gain respect from his family name and could restore her reputation. But when Sam discovers Alice isn’t wealthy and Alice discovers Sam and his brothers’ plan to destroy the Rathborne-Paxton family name, getting married will not solve anything. But what about her feelings for him? Will she have to move on and leave him behind?

This is a fun read that is entertaining and you never know what is going to happen next. The main story being Sam and Alice’s romance and how they finally find their HEA. There is danger mixed into the story and how they, along with Sam’s brothers, try to defeat the blackmailer and find out what the damaging info he has. I enjoyed the story and the fact that the family’s troubles carries over into the next book. I am not a huge fan of cliffhangers but because Sam and Alice’s story has a happy ending, I find the mystery interesting in how the next brother handles his dilemma. It is a good read that is worth your time.

I did not see the story going the way it did. I was anxiously waiting on Alice’s story because she was such a likeable character. Merry shocked me with where the story started and then what happened about half way through the book. It was all so great. Merry has an imagination that will wow you. It will leave you scratching you head and saying “wait, what?” which is always a good thing in my opinion. Anxiously waiting on the next stories to understand the whys of Montrose, the villain!

A delightful book.
Sam and Alice were great together but Sam has been told he must marry for money. This is hard for Alice but she tells him she will help. Now there are other twists on this coming from brothers no less. Yes the brothers cook up a little idea that will get back at someone close to them and also someone who is a true villain. You will love this one it was so much fun to read! I liked the ending because Sam comes pretty close to blowing it but fate just may help him out. Once I started reading this book, I couldn’t put it down. Sam and Alice’s love for each other take a beating in this story, but it endures and becomes stronger. The author draws you in from the beginning and keeps you hanging on to find out what happens next. Being the first book in a plot-related series, it leaves a little bit of the larger picture unresolved; however, you won’t mind because you will want to read the next book, too.

This story had a unusual setting in terms of being a love story between a second son and a "fallen woman ".
Sometimes it was hilarious, sometimes sweet and steamy.
However the leads weren't very likeable till almost the end.
Sam being the second son doesn't have much responsibility. He wants a rich heiress but also want to thwart his father.
Alice struggled most of her life but on knowing the truth about Sam and his family is quick to judge.
I liked that the story was fast paced.
Overall I liked the chemistry of the leads as well.
Enjoyable read.

Alice has a son and does what she has to in order to care for him. She is very careful to keep her select clients from her son. Until she meets Sam and he becomes her only one. Sam's family is steeped in scandal and he, with the urging of his brothers, makes it more scandalous by marrying Alice. But things go from bad to worse when their enemy starts attacking Alice with horrible rumors. Sam must make some hard decisions to keep Alice and her son safe from the gossip mongers.

Spectacular

I have been looking forward to Alice and Sam’s story. These two are so perfect for each and their romance is the perfect start to this new series. Four brothers have given themselves the choice to marry the richest and most unsuitable women. Alice fits the bill for one. She is an unwed mother who is determined to provide for her son but she is in love with her best friend Sam. Funny, enticing, sweet and emotional romance. It runs the full range of emotions.

Overcoming your circumstances is never an easy endeavour, but if you're struggling against preconceived idea's and views, it might be impossible.

When a man truly loves a woman, he'll love her no matter what her history entails and shall fight with his entire being to be her champion, no matter what the costs are.

True love is the only cure for a broken heart.

Marvelously suitable story

I love the idea of this series. As a redhead who has been called unsuitable a few times in my life I sympathize with Alice and Samuel as they face a lot of judgment, although her more than him. The marvelous way that Merry Farmer writes things so that they can be together is clever and lots of fun to read. Here’s to more unsuitable women.
