There was a time when Roddy Crippman used to have it all; a home, a wife, and everything he had ever imagined for himself. That time is long gone now... Nowadays Roddy pursues a lonely and nomadic life as a trapper in the wilderness of the Wet mountains. He wants nothing more than to stay invisible, far away from the memories and the tragedies of his past.
He has nothing to fear since he has already lost everything, hasn’t he?
Zadie Smallwood is a saloon girl that gets kidnapped by road agents in the service of a mysterious, wealthy man. She manages to escape but is terrified they will find her again. When she crosses paths with Roddy, he appears to be her only hope to escape her kidnappers and survive these treacherous, snow-covered mountains.
Will Zadie manage to find the strength inside her, when she won’t have Roddy to rely on?
As winter blows in full force, Roddy vows to do whatever it takes to help Zadie, while forcing himself to keep his emotions in check. The two of them will find courage in the bond that grows between them, but whether it can withstand the danger and the forces of power and greed is far from certain in this wild, unpredictable land...
A pulse-pounding drama, which will make you turn the pages with bated breath until the very last word. A must-read for fans of Western action and romance.
"A Trapper's Infallible Instinct" is a historical adventure novel of approximately 80,000 words. No cliffhangers, only pure unadulterated action.
If Zane Gray and Ann Rice co-authored a book, it might result in a book like this one, maybe.
It started out with the old cliche of the "young soiled dove" (Only there's four of them. The blond protagonist, a smart mouthed red-head, and a set of twins). Is there a picture starting to form in your mind?
There is a raid on the saloon where the girls are work. The saloon owner, the bouncer, the bartender, and numerous customers are mowed down by four men (A giant of a man who happens to be a mostly silent and deadly "halfbreed", definitely not PC, a very short man with a complex, the leader who ...), the picture is becoming clearer.
The girls are drugged (either), gagged, tied hand and foot, stuffed into a cart, covered with a tarp and hauled on a trip to a mysterious "boss" in Denver. Of course the girls untie themseles and try to run away. The only one who actually escapes is the blond who runs off the side of a cliff into a convenient river.
Then it gets weird. Switch to the rich boss in Denver who is being controlled by a gypsy witch? I told you it wasn't PC, didn't I?
And so on and so forth. And I haven't even told you about the blondes ESP nor her stumbling on to a "mountain man", running from a tragedy where his wife is killed in a mysterious cabin fire. The Indian is conveniently killed by a bear who smells the meat from an elk shot by the mountain man.
I forced myself to continue reading, but the above spoilers didn't even get me halfway through the book. I suffered through a few more plot points, but when the mountain man and the beautiful blonde soiled dove fell in love and started planning to start a farm, I quit.
Like I said, Ann Rice and Zane Gray.
I don't recommend this book, unless you're into supernatural, cliche ridden comedy.
Roddy, along with his nemesis, Mal, work together to protect the innocent in their area!
Certainly five stars worthy, as Mr. Levine goes above and beyond in his descriptive renditions of unending exciting adventures! Roddy definitely has his hands full trying to rescue some damsels, who have been captured by a heinous villain! Outstanding storylines that successfully maintains your undivided attention immediately and never falters throughout the entire series of unending excitement! Too, the characters, both good and bad, are unsurpassed in their respective assignments throughout this compelling western folklore extravaganza! No slow downs cover to cover! Certainly recommend this compassionately motivated series of ongoing western excursions to Al readers, even you non-western enthusiasts will enjoy following Roddy throughout his continuous exploits of unending exciting adventures! No slow downs, and the compassionate camaraderie of the good guys will definitely maintain anyone's undivided attention from beginning to end!!!😃
Three times while wading through the interminable discussions of the characters psyches, evaluations of situations by everyone involved and seemingly endless efforts to progress, I quit reading and put the book aside. Each time I came back to see if the developing story was worth it. It wasn’t. We’re the book abridged to half the length or lees It might have been a decent story. If you haven’t yet started the book, don’t.
Many well-developed characters, realistic hardship, philosophy, values
This is a love story, a woman's story, a good man's story, a tale of overcoming many kinds of hardship endured by white people living in the American wild West after the Civil War. This story is also about people who use, exploit, and enslave others. If you want to experience the ugly underbelly of those times from both women's and men's points of view, this book is a great choice.
This is another very good story by this author full of action and the influence of good able to win over evil and some instances of the supernatural The characters are strong and faithful The extended epilogue completes the story with actuon and togetherness A very awesome and well written read
First of all, I wouldn't call it a 'western'. Not in the normal sense.
Second, the author knows nothing of the wilds. Bears, wolves, and mountain lions don't eat people for their main diet. It's as if a human wouldn't last one night in the wilderness without being eaten.
This is the story of a young woman prostitute that is stollen along with three other women at the demands of a terrible rich man and a trapper with a tragic past. When they wet thru extreme circumstances they lear to trust each other but the drama only begins there.
I enjoyed the story. I was mildly irritated by the frequent introspection on the part of nearly all the characters, but I found it worth it to soldier on. It’s a good story, with a few unexpected twists and turns. If you’re a sucker for lots of action, this is a book for you.
Horrible. I could not read more than two or three chapters. The author should have some knowledge of the area and era. There are no, nor have there ever been, whitetail "stags" with 48" antlers. There are no, nor have there ever been, any 500 pound mountain lions. Come on man.
Enjoyed the story line, enjoyed the little twist. This author seems to drag the story out a bit much for me. I found myself jumping paragraphs. And not missing any of the story. Not sure uf I'll try another
Roddie lost his wife in a fire and retreated to the life of a lonely trapper. He got caught up in something that he had no part in the cause when the Prostitute was taken by evil men.
To much about what they were thinking. Very small amount of character interaction compared to the thought processes. Made the book so boring I couldn’t finish it.
