Not everyone can attend their own funeral. Not consciously and calmly, anyway.
Even Robert, a long-time ghost and something of a pro when it comes to final rites, finds it disconcerting. In the company of his long-time friend and fellow ghost Clothilde, Robert watches as his mother accompanies his remains to the grave — thirty years after his demise.
But why does Clothilde’s frail old uncle do the same? Does he know about the link between Clothilde and Robert’s deaths?
A funeral won’t put the past to rest — only solving the mystery of their own murders can bring closure.
And Uncle Lucien seems to hold vital clues…
Unveiling the Past is the second novel in the Ghost Detective series, following Robert and Clothilde in their continued search for justice.
R.W. Wallace writes in most genres, though she tends to end up in mystery more often than not. Dead bodies keep popping up all over the place whenever she sits down in front of her keyboard.
The stories mostly take place in Norway or France; the country she was born in and the one that has been her home for two decades. Don’t ask her why she writes in English – she won’t have a sensible answer for you.
Her Ghost Detective short story series appears in Pulphouse Magazine, starting in issue #9.
I really liked the first book and was expecting a bit more from this one, the second. It was a worthwhile read but I can see where this series is perhaps going to mostly drag on with Robert and Clothilde searching for their killers and coming close but never finding them. We did learn a bit more about the two spirits lives and I have to admit that they certainly find creative ways to communicate with the living, but I'm not sure if I liked it enough to get book 3.
Absolutely loved this book and the characters. With the depth of plot growing. As well as seeing the tangles of plot ever moving. Definitely going to get the next one.
Just because you can't see them doesn't mean you can't be friends!
Would you think having 2 spirits as your closest friends could bring you a bit closer to other living beings? Push you out of your comfort zone? Help you avoid danger? If you don't think so, then you just don't know ghosts! At least not these ghosts. Certainly they find creative ways to communicate with people who are "sensitive" to their influence. Suffice to say that these ghosts are so smart and genuine and likeable that you'll want to hang out with them long after finishing the book. Fortunately, there's more to come - keep up the ghost work, Ms Wallace, we love them!
This second installment of Ghost Detective Novels is somehow even more engrossing than the first. The ghost of a murdered twenty-year-old woman and the ghost of a murdered police officer have teamed up to help solve their own murders. (Living) Detective Evian is sensitive to the suggestions of the ghosts, and her partner, Dubira (also living), work against criminals and corruption as they seek justice for their unseen friends. Wonderful mystery, written by my new favorite author. The only thing that could make this story better is reading it with your sister.
Great continuation on from book 1 Captain Evian wants to continue her investigations into the unusually high numbers of suicides of young women in Toulouse. Pressure from above, though, restricts her to focusing on the unexplained death and illegal burial of a polce officer connected to one of the suicides. Yet the ties between the cases continue to grow. Together with partner Malik and data whiz Nadine, not to mention two highly unusual allies in ghosts Robert and Clothilde, tantalising pieces of information come to light and unexpected connections are revealed. But there is still much unknown, and their enemies are unafraid of resorting to force. The action ramps up in this sequel. I’m really enjoying the development and interactions of the main characters - Evian is a fabulous creation, the ghostly parameters make perfect sense, and I’m liking that Malik is showing his relative lack of experience. I’ve already started book 3….
I have never been fond of ghost stories. Too illogical, too unlikely. But this... Throughout history, and maybe even hundreds of thousands of years before, humans of all kinds gave the departed grave goods. But nowadays we are supposed to believe me we can only bring our souls? To me, it sounds more like we got stingy. The poor ghosts in this story can't even take their souls and leave. They are stuck to their bodies. How is a detective supposed to detect stuck in a graveyard? Read and find out. I have a few gripes. Dear Ms Wallace, what on Earth is a "dry sweet wine"? Of course you can fall in love when you are 37. But blushing, stammering, blundering like a teenager? No. No matter who your crush is. I am just annoyed. It doesn't make me like the character more. Quite the opposite.
Very good sequel. I continue to enjoy this series. I will definitely look for the third volume. Characters are very well written and interesting. Plot also is riveting. If this keeps up in the third volume, then I feel that this will be a terrific series.
The ghosts (Robert and Clothilde) continue helping the police find their killers. They encounter another ghost and distrust in the police department. Somewhere there is political hijinks in the mix. Super fun series.
