He’s found his mate. She’s just passing through. Can he convince her to stay?
Delta Novac hates her house on Lake Galen. The old place in the small town of Folk Haven is a reminder of her father’s mental decline in the last few years of his life. She’s just come to town to clear the thing out and get it ready to sell. Delta never even planned to dip a toe in the water until a prone body floating has her diving in to save the swimmer.
A selkie will know their mate when they are rescued.
Calder MacNamara wasn’t in need of saving, but he certainly appreciates the effort. Especially when the hands on his bare skin warm him to his core. The moment he meets the woman’s piercing stare, his gut tells him she’s his life partner. But he soon finds that if Delta feels anything toward him, it’s annoyance. Accidentally insulting her dog doesn’t help his case.
With Delta’s focus on the road out of town, Calder scrambles to discover what, if anything, could make her stay. He’s willing to use all means of pleasure at his disposal to convince his mate that Folk Haven is the perfect place to call home. Especially if you’re a mythical creature.
Lauren Connolly is an award-winning author of contemporary and magical romance stories. She’s lived among mountains, next to lakes, and in imaginary worlds. Lauren can never seem to stay in one place for too long, but trust that wherever she’s residing there is a dog who thinks he’s a troll, twin cats hiding in the couch, and bookshelves bursting with stories written by the authors she loves.
Adorable and fun fated mates story. Delta (h) is in town dealing with her deceased father’s estate (and trying to manage her complicated feelings about it - which I thought was beautifully done as someone who recently lost a parent). Calder (H) is a local selkie who’s “saved” by her when she thinks he’s drowning and he recognizes her as his fated mate. Except he’s not sure if Delta knows about the paranormal world and he has to temper his pursuit of her. Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and h wasn’t a virgin, H might have been but no history given.
I loved Calder’a cinnamon roll and sweetheart energy and also that he had an uncertain edge to him as the youngest in his family that was often overlooked. Delta has more going on then Calder realizes and she’s set on leaving the area, but she’s also reluctantly drawn into Calder and his courtship. She’s intelligent and independent but also has regrets and lacks connection. These two were so sweet together and very steamy.
Calder’s family add some funny side characters with a small side of family dynamic. Delta has a great dog, Gigabyte, who’s quirky and sweet. But most of the book is just the two main characters falling in love.
Eventually the paranormal side comes out, along with why Delta is set on leaving. They work it all out fairly easily and settle in to their HFN/HEA. The epilogue is a short jump ahead and also has a lead in to the next book. I’m happy my GR friend, Elizabeth, led me to this series and the ones she enjoyed.
This was a very fun, quick read about a small town in Georgia that is the home of many "mythical" creatures - among them, you guessed it, a few families of selkies. When Delta mistakenly tries to rescue Calder from drowning, he immediately recognizes his "mate." Luckily for those of us who are not into alpha-holes, he follows his sister's advice and does not stalk her.
He might come on a little strong, but he's super respectful, centers his courtship front and center on Delta's pleasure, and is just a decent guy. Also, we didn't realize it before starting this book, but a guy who's described with a body that "has mass ... not only muscle, but also a layer of meat that softens his edges" turned out to be just what we wanted to read.
This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.
Like eating a tres leches cake with caramel syrup and cookies paired with a chocolate shake with cream and sprinkles and a side of banana split.
My personal rating would be 2 ★ but it would be way too mean to give a book such a low rating just because it's too fluffy, so 3 ★ it is.
I vote that if there are CW for super dark romances, we need them for those that try to cram rainbows and unicorns down our eyes. (*this is a joke.) ・ ・ ・ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🕮⋆˚࿔✎𓂃 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐬 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I loved this. From the family banter to the totally sane way the hero deals with having a fated mate (note to self: do not stalk mate… if they are fated, I’ll see them again without the stalking).
There’s enough here in this short story to both feel complete and draw me in to the next one in the series. Fabulous find!
Delta thinks she’s saving a drowning man. Calder believes that a selkie knows its mate when they are rescued.
Short and very cute. Calder’s personality was like a golden retriever puppy with a manically waggling tail. 🤣 Delta was a little harder to warm to, because she was holding back from Calder (and the reader), but I still enjoyed the story.
I think I would have liked it more if I’d read the book instead of listening to the audiobook. Calder’s personality when voiced by the male narrator vs the female narrator was wildly different.
This man is the definition of no thoughts, just vibes. There truly is nothing going on behind the eyes, except thinking about his girlfriend. And I respect that
Seduced by a Selkie was a super sweet romance where Delta goes home after essentially living as a nomad to take care of her recently passed father's estate. She has dreaded doing this but it must be done. While there she witnesses what she thinks is a man drowning and saves him. That man is Calder and, spoiler alert , he wasn't drowning but he is completely smitten with Delta and has proclaimed her his mate. When he learns she's only in town temporarily he decides to see if he can woo her with his charm or make her fall in love with him so she stays.
This is a very silly romance but I will say it does have its moments. Calder was head over heels insta love and he had a lot of really cute lines. Delta was trying to get over her grief and Calder was a great distraction even when she didn't want him to be. This is an open door romance and the steamy scenes are explicit and hot. The only reason I rated it 3 stars is because Calder was a bit like a puppy in that he was a bit incessant and eager to please, for all intent and purposes, a stranger. He even spoke in an almost unbelievable people pleasing way. There is also a random reveal/plot twist that just didn't seem to fit the story at all towards the end.
I'm not sure I'll continue this specific series but I would try another Lauren Connolly book.
Started out strong but lost interest 65% of the way because nothing was happening. The FMC went from 0-100 with her knowledge on mystics. I feel like if we were in her head (inner dialogue) she should’ve hinted at this at one point. But alas, I don’t think I should be taking this too seriously. It was meant to be a fun and quick read. I’m still not really sure what Selkie’s are or look like. I don’t think I’ll be returning to Folk Haven.
New to me author Lauren Connolly pulls me into a quiet rustic world blooming with magic and underwater fun. I picked up this title specifically because anything with water catches my eye. I enjoyed the Selkies in this story. I particularly liked Calder. He is the baby in the family and at times, treated like one. He also appeals to me because he works at a SCUBA diving shop and that is fantastic since I'm a diver.

This is a story of unexpected love in the midst of grief and self doubt. Delta is back home to settle the affairs of her dad who has recently died. She doesn’t want to be at this house, taking care of his things because of all the emotions it brings up. So, of course, while she’s procrastinating while sitting on the dock and sees a body float by, she’s convinced death surrounds her. It’s shocking to be rescued when it’s not needed nor expected. That’s Calder’s initial thought when he’s leading a snorkeling trip and grabbed by an unknown woman! He can’t be too upset about it because the woman is not only beautiful but also his mate! Delta and Calder have a different understanding of their “relationship”. Delta knows that she’s leaving town as soon as she clears out her dads house. However, Calder believes that they’re meant to be and she just needs to open her mind to the possibility of love. There’s a lot going on in both of their lives, least of which is that they’re both mythic beings. I enjoyed reading how Calder tried to woo Delta. I felt for Delta as she tries to deal with the grief of losing her father, her last remaining parent, and the triggers that being home does to her. It’s not all grief, though. The writing is witty and fun and Calder’s family is awesome. And let’s not forget the sex scenes. Just because it’s a shorter book does not mean it skimps! Enjoy the book and immerse yourself in a town full of humans, selkies, sirens, dragons and more.
I was craving a short and spicy paranormal romance, and this hit the spot! This takes place in a town called Folk Haven-a place where magical beings of all kinds have established a safe community for themselves. Humans live there as well, but it’s clear that some are not aware of the magical nature of their fellow townsfolk.
Delta, the protagonist, is in town to handle her recently deceased father’s estate. She attempts to save her love interest, Calder (a selkie), who appears to be drowning, and for Calder it’s love at first sight (mating bond activated). Normally I’m not a fan of this dynamic, but it works for me in more light hearted PNR, and it helped that Delta did not know about the mating bond or reciprocate his feelings immediately. Also, far from being a possessive asshole (which can happen a lot with the mating bond trope), Calder has major golden retriever vibes, and he is honestly one of the sweetest male love interests I’ve read in this genre. His characterization was a huge factor in my enjoyment of this story. He consistently made sure he was respecting Delta’s boundaries, and he genuinely cared about her as a person, outside of his romantic interest in her. For the cons, I will say sometimes Calder spoke in an antiquated, borderline fedora wearing m’lady manner, but it wasn’t done often enough to tear me out of the story. Also, he is actually a nice guy, like the sweetest. So he gets a pass lol. He starts calling her Dr. when he finds out she’s working on her PhD, and when he realizes she doesn’t have space for the gifts he wants to give her, he starts bringing her gifts of food all the time instead🥲
Delta is dealing with the emotional trauma of losing a parent that had mental health issues with whom she had a strained relationship. For such a short story, I felt like those issues were handled very well. The spice was great, just not as frequent as I’d like for this type of story. But Calder is a giver, and I love how much he clearly enjoyed doing things for Delta without expecting anything in return. He is hubby material for sure. I’m definitely going to check out other books in the series.
This has so many of my favorite things. Small town where most people aren't human though they still have to keep it on the downlow. Fated mates. Freakin' selkies. Pure golden retriever/himbo hero. Complex heroine who's scared of love and settling down. An eccentric pet. Such good stuff.
Where is my selkie mate with the wonderful family who makes the best breakfast? The drunken morning after a swim thing is going to haunt me in the best way, and I can't wait to keep digging into this small town. There are so many nuggets here, and thankfully a whole series in which to explore them.
I love Calder's personality. His golden retriever energy goes well with Delta's slightly grumpy energy. I actually started reading this because I thought it was like the other monster romance I was reading, but it surprised me that it was more of a fantasy romance rather than a monster smut. Lol. Now, I want to read the remaining two stories in the series. ❤️
This is such a relaxing read. No massive turning points or kidnapping or anything of the sorts lol. Only a Selkie who is trying to charm his mate while she is trying to go through grief and her fear of becoming like her father. This was seriously cute and I enjoyed it all greatly. It was a fun and short read and I love how it was written. Laughed a lot too
Calder was the definition of golden retriever energy and was honestly pretty adorable.
Unfortunately everything else in this was pretty basic and unremarkable. Might continue reading these because they're easy but idk if they're exactly worth it
Note - I received a digital arc of this book for free ; a courtesy of Book Sirens on the basis of which this review has been posted voluntarily. This is an honest opinion of mine.
Rating - 5 stars
Disclaimer - This book contains strong language, sex scenes, and mild kink .
Before I elaborate further, I would really like to thank Book Sirens for a chance to review this book and author Lauren Connolly for penning down such an amazing story.
To sum up in a line - Seduced by the Selkie ; authored by Lauren Connolly is simply a short sweet mythical read that totally lives up to its name with a strong dosage of steamy sensual romantic scenes that all die hard romantic fans will totally love.
Set in the fictional town of Folk Haven - a small town known for being home to residents of mythical origin, protagonist Delta has come to town to sell her lake side home upon the demise of her father. She sees a body floating on the lake water and immediately dives in to rescue only to find herself in an embarrassing situation - turns out that the guy that she was trying to save was a swimming instructor who was teaching a group of students apart from being the protagonist / selkie Calder. A strong chemistry is evident within the duo however Delta does not wish to stick around for anytime longer than what is needed to sell her dad's home while Calder is convinced that she is her mate as per the mythical mate bond that is existent in their community.
But does she know about the mythical world ? Is she a mythic or human ? And more importantly - Will Calder be able to convince Delta to stay there long enough for her to realize the mate bond and his love ? That is what the entire story is all about.
Calder is an absolute gentleman who not only won Delta's heart but also mine with his chivalrous nature and his respect for the girl that he loves . Pretty hard to find someone like him in the real world these days !!
The entire book followed a clear narrative with minimal errors. The leads were an absolute absolutely a treat to read. Mild profanity is there and the sexual content isn't too OTT. This is simply a fabulous multi time read for all those die hard romance fans aged 18+. The story ultimately opened a Pandora's box worth mysteries that are to be resolved which I presume will be dealt with in the next sequel hopefully. Seriously looking forward to read the next one in this series !!
Calder is the ultimate golden retriever MMC. At one point, the FMC refers to him as an "eager seal pup," and that is very accurate. Their love story was cute, and I liked this world. The ending was weird and abrupt. I'm guessing it's to keep you reading the series in order, but this can still be read as a stand-alone.
I found this very cute. The hero is a big cinnamon roll/part time seal, a combination I found very endearing. His big family was also a fun part of the story. The heroine was grieving and I thought the way he would do whatever it took to make her feel better without breaking boundaries was lovely. This was a shortish book and I thought the world building of the town was a little bit lacking. But I will definitely read more in the series.
I don't think I've ever laughed so hard and at the same time been mortified for a character more in the first couple of pages! It's a fun story that draws you in and makes you smile. I do wish there were more descriptions of people and the world around them. Thank you for the free ARC
Lauren Connolly’s Seduced by a Selkie, the first book in the Folk Haven series is a short, entertaining romance read. If you’re a fan of Kresley Cole or Gena Showalter, or you’re just on the lookout for a quick, entertaining cross between paranormal romance and urban fantasy book then this one’s for you!
Delta has returned home to the small town of Folk Haven after the death of her father. After she gets there, she sees a body floating in the lake one day and immediately goes into action to save them. Things get very awkward, however, once she realizes the man is not in fact drowning and is actually teaching a swimming class. The chemistry between Delta and Calder is evident from the start, but Delta is not interested in staying in Folk Haven and Calder has his work cut out for him to make her believe in their mythical bond before it’s too late.
One thing I love to see in romance novels is an emphasis on the importance of consent, and Calder in particular is a consent king. The relationship between Calder and Delta is one of ‘fated mates’, and from the moment they meet, Calder’s focus is on Delta’s comfort and pleasure (which includes making sure she’s comfortable with everything they are doing). Once the consent is there, the romance is spicy and hot (bordering on erotic romance, given the detailed scenes). I would not recommend this for younger readers – mature adult readers only, folks!
I’m a big fan of mythology and fantasy, so it was exciting to see that this book features the lesser known selkies. For those who might not be familiar, a selkie is a figure from Celtic and Norse mythology who is able to change forms between a human and a seal. Mermen are definitely more common in urban fantasy and paranormal romance, and I was quite amused when Calder grumpily referred to them as “fuckboys” (he’s obviously not a fan). In terms of worldbuilding, the author did a great job painting the picture with the setting. She also did a great job explaining how the bond dynamics work. There was some missed potential, however, with the actual folklore surrounding the selkies and other mythical creatures present in the universe of the Folk Haven series. This extended to being lost at times with how the dynamics between the various “mythics” in Folk Haven works. I hope to see the worldbuilding expanded in subsequent books so it’s not an issue in the future.
The author does mention the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book (which is appreciated). Still, I feel compelled to note in my review that potential readers should be aware that the book includes discussions of parental death, hoarding, and drowning. If any of these are potentially triggering, please take caution while reading.
Overall, Seduced by a Selkie was an engaging and interesting book. This series seems to be a set of interconnected standalones, so I’m curious to see where the author will take the story in the next book of the series, Sucker for a Siren.
The way I came about this book was a new one for me. I recently decided to join the TikTok community, although thus far I’m only a lurker. One of the first authors I started to follow was Lauren Connolly. I can’t remember why since I hadn’t read any of her books, I’m sure one of her videos ended upon my FYP. She did a good job because I was really interested in reading her new selkie shifter book. Bonus that I found out, from her again, that it was free! Of course, I had to get the book and check it out.
I cannot express how much I adore Calder. He is so sweet and innocent in so many ways. He’s not naïve to the ways of the world, but he has very specific ideas about love and mates and how romance works. His ideas are coming from such a good and pure place, I can’t fault him.
Delta has a lot of baggage and no idea of the nature of so many of the residents in her father’s town. When she moves there to clean out his house and close his estate, she just wants to get it done and get out. Too many bad memories, too many regrets, too much guilt. She can’t help the pull she feels toward Calder from the moment they meet, but it scares her to think he will have her holding onto things she would rather let go.
Both characters have a lot to learn about themselves, especially Delta. Once she has her eyes opened to the world around her, she slowly starts to open her inner eyes onto herself. I had a lot of issues with Delta, but she’s a strong and smart woman who is just going off the information that is available to her.
Overall, I really enjoyed this tale. There were some issues for me with the flow here and there, but for the most part it was a quick read. I’ll definitely be checking out more from this author. I really enjoyed Calder’s family and would love to read their stories that are all coming up in this series.
P.S. I have to mention that I really appreciate the author putting content warnings in the beginning of this book. Not only so I would know if any of the content would be a problem for me, but also to help me to know what to list myself. Often I know a book I am reviewing needs a content warning but I’m at a loss to how to categorize the triggers. Whether it’s because I just cannot think of the right words or I just flat out don’t know what a specific type of trauma is called, it doesn’t matter. The content needs a warning and I don’t want to let anyone down. Having the author already list them out really helps as both a reader and a reviewer.
Seduced by a Selkie by Lauren Connolly tells an unusual story in the usual trappings of a paranormal shifter romance. Girl rescues boy from drowning and realizes he wasn't drowning, boy is a selkie and is convinced that she is his fated mate, girl does not know any of that and is running from generational trauma and mental baggage and by extension from the beautiful but strange town full of magical folk her father died in. You will never see the twist coming at the end.
I was genuinely unprepared for how wonderful this book was. The blurb and the way the book is written as one begins reading it, sets a baseline of expectations that the story constantly exceeds. The writing is clear and the plot flows well, and the main characters develop as genuinely likeable and interesting people even within the relatively short length of the book. Many of the tropes of the shifter romance genre are used in ways that don't feel tired.
One of the main attractions of the book, for me, was the entirely unexpected conversation the writer engages in about online learning and higher education in current times. It makes the book very current, which can be both a strength and a weakness. Being an educator and a student myself, I related very strongly to the conversation that the main character has about teaching and learning over digital platforms, and I realize that this might be something that not all readers would find interesting or relatable. I was not expecting online learning to be an issue in a story about a Selkie seducing a woman. This is also probably what makes this book an urban fantasy.
And finally, the plot twist towards the end of the book, because it has to be acknowledged, was so smoothly executed it almost feels like a magic trick. The author partially shares information and misdirects the reader so thoroughly, that the surprise revelation at the end feels appropriately shocking but also at least somewhat believable.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Hating the small town she grew up in Delta is only in town to sell the place that only reminds her of her father's mental decline. She didn't plan on swimming but she saw someone floating in the water so she dives in only to discover what a selkie knows quickly, this is her mate.
Her mate didn't need to be saved but he definitely likes her manhandling him, his gut tells Calder that he will spend a lifetime with her. She needs some convincing because she is thoroughly annoyed with him and he unwittingly insults her dog too.
Now this is the beginning of a man in love who is determined to convince her both of his love and that as a mythical creature isn't the magical place of Folk Haven the perfect place to live.
This is a well thought out story with characters that give you those hours of reading a joyful time even knowing that there is more to come in the miracle town of Folk Haven. If you enjoy a story that tugs at your heartstrings and you laugh at what Calder does to convince Delta to stay.
I loved discovering this author and cannot wait for more of what she enfolds with this series. I first found this book on a site that lets you volunteer to read a complimentary copy and give my honest opinion of how I felt about this story and there was no compensation involved. I happily discovered that it was free on Amazon and I snapped that baby up because I didn't know how long it would be at this free price. Don't take my words at face value grab your own and see if you agree.
An intriguing read, involving a romance of a mythical being and his mate. Calder is a Selkirk (seal shifter) who is rescued by a woman when she thinks he had drown. She is mortified to discover he is a living and healthy man in the middle of teaching a scuba diving class. He is exited because with one look he recognized her as his mate.
Delta has mixed feelings about Folk Haven. Her father moved them to town after her mother died and he suffered a deepening depression. Now that her father has passed she is in town to clean out his home and decide if she wants to sell it or not. Her father became a hoarder and his home is full of metal sheets he used to use to make incredible sculptures, but now just fill the home.
Delta keeps herself guarded about keeping much more than bare necessities as she lives in an Airstream trailer with minimal room. She fears turning into a hoarder like her father as she gets older.
Delta is attracted to Calder, but fears letting herself indulge in more than just a fling. Calder is a sweet and sexy man who is determined to win his mate’s attention and is extremely careful to gauge her reactions.
This was an entertaining read and the author slowly reveals some new information later in the story that made Delta’s fears and concerns more understandable. The unexpected layer to the storyline made The entire book work for me.
I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
A short-ish light & fun supernatural romance set in a town filled with mythical beings where, despite fate pulling the hero & heroine together, there are some obstacles seeming to keep them apart. The heroine, Delta Novac, has returned to her father's property after his death. As a PhD student and online teacher, she lives her life on the road in an airstream and has no intention of staying in one place. The hero, 26-year-old selkie Calder MacNamara, is the youngest of 4 siblings and works for his parents' dive company. When he sees the heroine he immediately knows she is his fated mate, and he is desperate for her to stay and give him a chance.
I was looking for something light, that wouldn't overtax my brain cells if I'm being honest, and this was perfect. A sweet romance with a decent dose of steamy bits and a HEA for the couple with hints of more books to come for the siblings. Nothing to complain about from me.
*****Spoiler Alert***** This Book Includes Violence. A brief fight with a creature seemingly made of bones underwater. Sex. MF sex, some light exhibitionism - fingers used while out on the dock. Mental Health Issues. Deceased father was a hoarder with mythical creature psych issues, references to possibly passing compulsion to heroine.
Things I liked: The mythological angle...I found a town that is full of mythological creatures living side by side with humans intriguing. The setting was charming and wonderful, I'd like to visit myself.
Things that left me a little lukewarm: Calder's dialogue and inner monologue was awkward in a lot of places and it threw me off. I love characters that are innocent and open, but in his case, it felt odd and a little forced. Delta's secret came in a little too late, in my opinion. It made me feel like it was just a convenient addition to the plot, rather than a hidden truth, if that makes sense. There isn't any world building really. You know from the title that there are more things than humans in the book, but there isn't really that much information on the way the world works or what else is out there. Again, toward the end we get a peek at some possibilities, but I feel like the story could have been filled out more from the beginning instead of being solely about Calder's wooing of Delta and her resistance.
Overall, I like this book well enough, I just feel like there could have been a lot more to it.
I received an ARC of this book from BookSirens and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
