"Humankind is poison."

Mr. Spicebag was a random pick. I spotted the cover while browsing in the library, and it caught my attention because the man on the front resembles a certain infamous politician (albeit looking like he's on his deathbed, you might be able to see this as well). Anyway, I decided to give it a go.

What I liked about this book:

1- The target audience for Mr. Spicebag is probably 7–10 years old. I’ll admit I’m too old for this kind of book; but one can enjoy children's book every once in a while. To be honest, this book was much better than I expected. The plot was solid and engaging; it reminded me of a mix between George’s Marvellous Medicine, James And The Giant Peach, and The Witches. If I were a kid, I’d be absolutely obsessed with it.

2- I love it when books teach me something. If, like me, you assumed a spicebag was just a bag of mixed spices, you’re sadly mistaken. It’s actually an Irish food, according to Google. (To be fair, it looks delicious.) (Why do they call it spicebag though?)

What I didn’t like:

1- Maurice, the mouse with the French accent  was my favourite character; but he was sadly underdeveloped. I wanted more of him! He was so cute and super funny.

2- I would have appreciated more pictures because they looked so good.

*** Possible Spoilers ***

This is a children's book and needs to be evaluated accordingly. It's not to my taste but it wasn't written for me. I think it targets kids from about 7 to 12. Parts of it are a little coarse so I think it would appeal to boys more than girls. The author keeps the plot moving right along. The villain is properly villainous. The protagonist, a 10 year old boy always does his best and manages to win out in the end, and peace is restored. The author's message is to eat healthy foods but I'm pretty certain most young boys will disregard it without difficulty. Children are surprisingly good at spotting and ignoring adult messaging no matter how carefully it is disguised. I listened to the audio version so I don't know if the illustrations are any good but i expect they're fine. After going to the trouble of writing a book I doubt any author would settle for poor illustrations. For adults, I don't recommend the audio version. Children like sound effects and the reader went out of his way to accommodate them. It gets a bit painful at times. If you have a kid in the target age range I think you can give them this book and there's a pretty good chance they'll enjoy it.

This is a bit of a weird, creepy story that is also full of mystery and laughs. Well worth the read I would suggest maybe coming nearer to Halloween
