Captain Emeline Evian reluctantly finds her neighbor’s guest bedroom a near-idyllic setting for speaking with the dead — even if the ghost she aims to help is, well, resistant.
On the other end of Evian’s Ouija board, Ghost Detective Robert and his rebellious friend Clothilde do their best to contain the unpredictable Constantine and help this old, worn soul find peace — all while investigating their own decades-old cold cases in an elusive search for justice.
Can the ghost detective finally settle his own unfinished business? Will Clothilde allow them to take a deep dive into her past?
Beneath the Surface is the third novel in the Ghost Detective series, following Robert and Clothilde in their ceaseless search for closure.
R.W. Wallace writes in most genres, though she tends to end up in mystery more often than not. Dead bodies keep popping up all over the place whenever she sits down in front of her keyboard.
The stories mostly take place in Norway or France; the country she was born in and the one that has been her home for two decades. Don’t ask her why she writes in English – she won’t have a sensible answer for you.
Her Ghost Detective short story series appears in Pulphouse Magazine, starting in issue #9.
I had chills! I heard screams! I nearly suffocated! R.W. Wallace writes so convincingly. I never knew a ghost would scream so hysterically. Wow! Feeling a little bad for Evian, having to deal with that. Thanks for another winner. On to Piercing the Veil.
The overreaching story arc of this series is the premise of 2 ghosts, Clothilde and Robert, helping Captain Emeline Evian find justice and discover who and why they were murdered and gather evidence that can be used in a court of law to convict the guilty. Each full-length novel has another crime that is solved at the end of each book, but it is linked to the overall storyline and therefore it is recommended that the full-length books of which there are 4 at the time of writing this review (September 2022) are read in order to get the full picture as each book contains more clues as to the motive of why this killing spree started 30+ years ago. The story telling is great and I was engaged with the story from the first chapter. Subsequently, I purchased books 2, 3 and 4. There are more books to come in this series. When you subscribe to the author's newsletter, at the end of each full-length novel is a link to a free short story relating to events when the 2 ghosts were stuck in the cemetery. An interesting read.
I am sorry to have to tell you. The Plot got clean away from the Authoress. This is disappointing for several reasons. All human bodies do not have the same number of bones. To be sure you have all from a skeleton, you would need to take it out in a block and ask an archeolgist to excavate it. Some, like ear bones are tiny. I know nothing about French laws, but I don't believe a police officer can just order multiple exhumations within 24 hours. I won't believe that even a senior police officer can offer crooks deals. As soon as they are arresterad, no less... If you can't work a plot without involving politics, at least don't make it between old, greedy politicians, who have been in a conspiracy for 30 years, murdering dozens of people, and having complete control of the police and the local government on one side, and idealistic white-as-driven-snow very young people who are good just because they belong to non-profit organisations on the other... France isn't a Wild West town in 1880 with white hats and black hats. If you want a romance, fine. But if it involves two grown-ups just short of 40, Please! Please! don't make them behave like hormone poisoned teenagers, blushing and fluttering. Don't make one of them giggle and wiggle and bounce and clap hands, etc, etc. It's not attractive. Despite all this, the actual story limps on. And I still like the Main Character, Robert. He deserves the third star all by himself. I'll have to think about if I want to spend more money and time. Life is short, there are a lot of unread books.
Absolutely loved this book and the characters. There is so much going on in this book that it left me not wanting to put it down in case I missed something. Hopefully the next one will be out soon.
This series is holding up really well. Our team closes in on the main villain. Almost everyone is in peril at some point. I couldn't stop reading. Even shed a tear over one scene. Starting on the final book now.
As Captain Evian’s investigation into the death of Clothilde and Robert throws up new clues, their enemies break cover, putting more innocent lives at risk. More surprises, more layers, more danger, but just as enjoyable. Already on book 4…..
Clothilde and Robert, along with Evian, help another ghost move on. During this process, the three bring down a land swindle that has resulted in several murders.
