Blanket

Rate this book
A gentle wordless picture book about the difference a kind friend can make on a gray day.   It’s a beautiful morning, but when Cat wakes up, the world feels gray. Cat wraps up in a blanket and hides ― until Dog comes in. What can Dog do to help Cat? Dog joins Cat under the blanket and listens to Cat’s worries. Dog’s flashlight illuminates the darkness and brings laughter. The two friends build a blanket fort where they can make shadow puppets and find comfort in storybooks. Dog makes sandwiches so that they can share a picnic meal. With Dog’s help, Cat discovers ways to cope until the sadness starts to lift. Ruth Ohi’s first wordless picture book is a quiet, heartfelt story about those times when you just want to hide under a blanket ― and how much it can mean to have a friend who will be there to keep you company.

6/5/2024 - I didn’t know if I’d like a wordless book. But it was nice being able to explain the pictures and go more in-depth. Children and adults could both relate to the story.

A heartwarming story about the power of a cozy blanket and a good friend, Ruth Ohi’s first wordless picture book Blanket is a comfortable, cuddle up story.

It’s a beautiful day but Cat wakes up in a gloomy grey mood. They just want to hide away in the comfort of their cozy blanket. When Dog shows up with a flashlight and kindness, he helps Cat shake the darkness away.

The wonderful thing about a wordless book is that the story can change an evolve each time it is accessed by the reader. Perhaps it starts as a story told by an adult reader and then changes as young readers themselves pick it up and lead their own narrative. Ruth Ohi’s welcoming illustrations provide readers with comfort even on their saddest day.

Ruth Ohi knows that children can sometimes feel sad and there are a million and one reasons for the sadness. Maybe their favourite shirt is in the wash, maybe the birds were chirping too loud or maybe something hard is happening at home that is hard to put into words. Through this wordless picture book, Cat’s reason for sadness is up to the reader's imagination, centering the reader and allowing them to have an opportunity to process their own feelings.

Dog is a great friend. Through Dog, readers have a guide, an inspiration to help them when they have a friend who needs a loving ear and a little fun. Each time Dog leaves the blanket fort they return with something new to help cheer up Cat. Again, the reader decides what is happening between Cat and Dog and what Dog is saying and doing to help their friend, just like they do.

Wordless picture books are fantastic tools to use with pre-readers, especially preschoolers who sometimes just want to sit quietly with a book. I see it everyday at a preschool so having wordless options for readers allows them to enjoy the illustrations and create their own stories. They can also provide inspiration for older readers and writers to use the wordless story as a jumping off point to their own storytelling.

Blanket is a beautiful story about feelings and friendship for young readers of all ages.

5 stars. Some days you just need to sit under your blanket and not come out for anything, except maybe for a friend with a flashlight and a good book! Lovely wordless picture book kids and adults can relate to, excellent pics.

A book without words can be just as powerful as one with words. Ruth Ohi's latest picturebook is evident of this, as it offers readers a glimpse of a young cat who wakes up one morning feeling as gray as the day is. We have all felt like curling up and hiding under the blankets at similar times. Sensitive to their emotions, Dog helps out their friend by offering simple ways they might feel better, such as turning on a flashlight under the blanket. Children and adults alike will recognize the emotions experienced by Cat and that having a good friend can help to bring a little light into an otherwise dark day.

A blanket can be used so many ways to comfort. In this story cat hides away underneath his blanket so he doesn't have to face the dreary day. When dog joins him they play and build, read and laugh, nap and snack underneath and eventually on top. A cute story of facing your fears and enjoying friends.

A wordless picture book about how to comfort a friend who may be experiencing sadness. This is so sweet and gentle but opens a powerful conversation with children about how to be with a friend who may be dealing with grief or depression. I loved everything about it!

This is a wordless picture book that shows a cat waking up not really feeling up for the day. Cat's friend Dog arrives and does his best to help. Through the pictures, readers can think about and discuss what it is like to feel the way that Cat feels, and what Dog can do to be a good friend. A good SEL title that comes out tomorrow, August 2.

Cat wakes up to a grey day. Not even the bluebirds outside their window make a difference. They hide under their blanket until a friend, Dog, arrives. Dog listens, reads, plays and sits with Cat they feel better.
This is a profound book about sadness and understanding that just being there with someone really helps.

Even a casual observer will notice the abundance of blankets in my home. A collector of warmth and comfort abides within this space. Several of them are gifts from treasured friends. Stories are woven in them.

As children we know there is something about burrowing under the cover of a blanket to read a book by flashlight when everyone else is sleeping. In her first wordless picture book, Blanket (Groundwood Books, House of Anansi Press, August 2, 2022), Ruth Ohi tells a tender tale of the kindness extended from one friend to another friend. True friends can look into our hearts and know exactly what they need.
