The palace has transformed into a bloody battleground, forcing the new Yamada Asaemon arrivals into an uneasy alliance with those seeking to escape the island. A giant monster has entered the fray, one so large that everyone is trapped within the confines of its body. If they don't escape by morning, they'll be transformed into flowers and used to fuel the destruction of everything they know!
I kind of can’t see how this story is going to end. I have been behind Gabimaru and his wife this entire time but now I’m thinking it would be a cool, very sad ending if it turns out it was all an act because they’re ninjas and they’ve been raised to be empty.
With Chobe, he 100% is thinking, “look how my baby bro has grown, he doesn’t need me any more, I can die happy and secure in the knowledge that he will only continue to grow.” Which is nonsense because these are two of my favourites and I really don’t want to see them parted. His mind palace was a very sweet place filled with multiple versions of himself telling him what he needs to know to make his decisions and as always, every version of himself knows he’s got to do whatever helps his brother. Shion’s promise to be Nurugai’s guide and father figure was reminding me of Sirius Black asking Harry to move in with him after he’s acquitted of crimes and we know how that ended. I am scared for them because I still haven't gotten over Tenza’s death and he died for these two, so they can’t die.
It’s also the fact that Nurugai has grown from the teachings and friendship she received from these two. Yes, she is probably mentally and physically strong enough to go live her life again without them, but why should she? I like this kid. Yuzuriha has come back to life and continues to be a great character. She’s level-headed and rational without truly being heartless and cold, and having a great sense of joy about her. I love that type of character. We get to learn about Isuzu in this volume and I’m also enamoured with her. She’s faced prejudice all her life amongst the general population because of her darker features and it was Shugen who fought for her and made her feel comfortable. Her loyalty makes sense and the way Kiyo speaks of Shugen also makes it difficult for me to truly dislike him.
I’m very conflicted about Shugen. It’s undeniable that he has a massive heart for ALL the people of his clan. It is so clear to me why he inspires such loyalty, love and admiration from them. He’s also a very good fighter who wears his heart on his sleeve. At the same time, he killed Fuchi, who I really liked too. I believe Isuzu is also having a little difficulty as she knows the most rational path is to work with the criminals, but Shugen means so much to her that she must and wants to follow him.
Then there’s Jikka. He’s come in like a leader who is very good at delegating and surprisingly strong but incredibly lazy. I can’t dislike him for wanting an easier life but now he’s going to have Shugen killed for his pleasures. Or is he? I don’t know what he’s up to. I was ready to call him a bisexual icon but on the whole, he’s a bit too creepy to be an icon which is a shame.
One issue that I have had with this series is the nudity. I’m not adverse to nudity and I will say that in this story, it doesn't always just seem like fanservice. The Tensen are ever changing and engaged in ritual sex so it makes sense. It would be perfectly fine except the author does not balance depictions of female nudity and male nudity. When female characters are going through emotional turmoil, or when we look into their inner thoughts, they’re naked but not when the male characters do the same. At least make it equal.
Another “bad” character I like is Shija. She is very entertaining and I’m here to be entertained so of course, I like her. Again, acting with her heart on her sleeve and again, it’s putting her at odds with our main characters. But I like her all the same. The author’s art really impresses me when he’s depicting the ninja fights. The way he captures their motion is much better than when he’s showing sword fights. I prefer these fights visually to the monster slashing. I hope Sagiri gets to fight for an actual reason soon because she hasn’t done much fighting lately and I can’t abide by her reason to fight Shija being that she called her a hag. She’s shown herself to be above such things. She’s a calm and lever headed person, not one who falls to taunts from a psycho.
This volume was split up with everyone in a pair fighting 1/5 tandems of ten big plant so we spent some time with each one to establish what each group is fighting for and what we have to lose. I believe this is probably a set up so that we can watch them die next volume after finding out what they have to live for.

I mean…. Can they just kill Shija now ? I hate her existence and I want her to perish so hopefully the next volume will make my dream come true; I expect this not to be a lovely dovey happy ending kinda manga, I think it will be something between happy and extremely miserable. I just really hope they get back in one piece (I doubt it) man oh man WE ARE REALLY ALMOST AT THE END AHHHHHHHHHH Also I think Sagiri I kinda being played dirty here; she could do more (she should and I expected more) she looked quiet promising but I don’t know what the author is doing making her all “let’s try to compromise” and struggling to “fight” even the slightest bit… she had more potentials and a good background story but now she’s just (I don’t wanna say it) acting like a weakling and seeking protection.. I mean come on now.. all these strong female characters can’t be ruined or teeter around the end; so hopefully I see Something from her soon or else I’ll be a little disappointed (considering the other fem characters are just smashing it tbh)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ”I believe that you are righteous. And when you’re in the wrong, then so, too, will I be.”
I LOVE THE CHARACTERS DYNAMICS!!!! Especially Gabimaru and Sagiri. Also, Shion and Nurugai’s father-daughter relationship is stirring up all my emotions. Aza brothers winning best manga brothers award!!!
Shija is definitely crazy... And Jikka is a complicated character because he agreed to team up with them but he still wants others dead just so that he can get a higher rank. And the way he sees things makes him really strong! We haven't seen him fight yet, but his intelligence sure is incredible. Also, Iwagakure's training is brutal! But the outcome is that, yes the majority of kids die during training but the ones who survive become really strong.
3.5 ⭐️ A lot happening and nothing at the same time. Like, a lot of action was happening and you can tell we are reaching the end. But there was so much action with 0 character depth and no funny banter and a whole new plot twist that makes no sense to me. I am still loving the series overall though.
Lot of shifting alliances and schemes this volume. Simultaneously a lot of moving pieces while a lack of progress made. Very video game set up, with pairs splitting up to all struck a weak point at the same time. Jinka is one schemer despite the lax persona.
2,5. This volume is very convoluted. There’s too much happening with too many plotting or twisting. Tbh I don’t feel engaged with this story anymore, but I’m still curious to see how they’ll overcome the situation. Also, for some reason, Sangiri lost her arc awhile ago and that’s shame because seemed promising.
3-3.5 stars. Didn't like it as much as previous volumes. Lots of action, not as many funny/cute character interactions, and more focus on the newer characters than on the ones I already love. I feel like the new characters almost came out of nowhere pretty late into the game. Also, I do feel like Sagiri got pushed to the background and was overshadowed by many of the side characters. And again, this story has so many power-system terms and so many plots going on at the same time that it can be overwhelming.
BUT it is fun, the art is as gorgeous as ever, and I'm super excited to continue the series! Can't believe I'm almost done with it!
One thing this series loves is toying with common animanga archetypes. You see this with Tenza and Shugen, both a tip of the hat to common shonen anime protagonist boy character traits. Jikka is the same way, but for the lazy slacker. Jikka
The ending Sagiri omakes are possibly the most adorable thing I've seen from this entire manga. No notes.
Shugen's relationship with Isuzu was very sweet - I think it's easy to also see it as a bit weird, but Shugen's more than a bit weird, so it all balances out.
Shion . Nurugai finally seeing the truth beyond truth and rising as his equal. So good. What a great conclusion to both of their arcs, both of their shared experiences.
Shija remained phenomenal - every character in this manga whose name starts with 'sh-' is a banger. I love how Gabimaru's final embrace of his love for Yui seems to almost render her an afterthought.
EDIT: Forgot Chobe and Toma. Chobe finally seeing his brother grow, and choosing to step aside because he knows his brother can handle whatever life throws at him - great moment.
Fuchi’s death is confirmed and it’s really got me sad. His bond with the big oaf was really adorable and I’d hoped they’d be together. Something I appreciate about this series is that the deaths have been kept to a minimum for our heroes. I really like this volume because of all the beautiful character moments. It definitely felt like a setup volume but these parts fleshing out characters are really impressive. Some standouts are Nurugai requesting Shion to be their partner instead of protector, Isuzu’s backstory and relationship with Shugen (who is a pretty cool character.) Chobe taking steps to transform so they win because he finally believes that his brother can move on and doesn’t need his protection, and then there’s the whole backstory stretch about ninja life and how disgustingly brutal it is as Shija describes it. One of the major themes in this series is how we protect and stand with one another. There’s a 2 page spread of everyone getting ready for battle that is just so freaking cool! This is definitely another strong volume in the series. With how elaborate this art is, I wonder how they’ll adapt it for tv. There’s a lot of moving parts.

Bit of a chiller volume, which is crazy considering everything's going haywire.
One thing that's been bothering me for a while is whenever they reference something related to the power dynamics regarding their positions or whatever, some character has to say "this is how the current era works" I wish they'd stop doing it every single time.
While I wasn't as enraptured with this volume as I was the previous one, it is still an incredibly strong volume and a great addition to the series.
Seeing all the characters come together was great, and I'm really excited to see where the fights go from here. Though this volume does point out how incredibly fast the pacing of this story is, to the point where I could see people getting fed up with it. It feels like so much has happened for the characters, yet little time has actually passed at all. It can be a little overwhelming, especially when we're this close to the end of the series.
Still though, I am greatly enjoying this, and after being somewhat disappointed by the anime, it's nice to have some consistent fun with the manga.
Also, I'm a huge fan of Shija. They're both very attractive and terrifying, the kind of stuff I like. I'm looking forward to see what's going to happen with them, so I suspect it won't be too pleasant.
This volume was another solid continuation of the journey to find the elixir on the island, but because of how much action and important exposition we’ve been given over the last few volumes, this volume for some reason didn’t feel as strong as those. I think because of how much trauma we endured over the last two volumes specifically, because there wasn’t anything major that occurred it felt like a step back while still being very solid overall. I love the growing relationship of Shion and Nurugai, and seeing him rely on her rather than vice versa was so heartwarming and endearing. I love how much information we finally get on Gabimaru and Yui, and the volume is mostly of the fight between Gabimaru, Sagiri, and Shija, which was really well done. And I love seeing the Asaemon realize that they have to work with the convicts if they’re gonna make it off of the island, something that our current Asaemon realized much sooner.
This very much felt like a "Ready, stage set, and we're....ABOUT to go." But still highly entertaining.
Everyone must split into groups to take down this big bad. It has to be taken down all at once at the same time. Of course the third in charge of the samurai turns out to be far more dangerous than expected but also...a scumbag. Everyone in this damn series feels like a scumbag at points...and I kind of love it. We also get to see some ninja on ninja action as the one in love with our main ninja hero wants to either fuck him or kill him...or both.
Overall, a highly entertaining volume with, what looks like, a main death and a push towards the end in a heroic way. Let's see how the final two volumes pan out.
Series: Hell's Paradise #11 Rating: 3 stars - I liked it
In this volume we are starting to see the battle shift to focusing only on Zhu Jin’s banko plant. Yamato Asaemon Jikka has gathered all the surviving criminals and Asaemon to battle the banko plant by splitting into teams to attack it. Jikka is an interesting swordsman but I don’t love his motivations. This volume ends with Gabimaru fighting his old comrade, Shiji. Shiji is a crazy person who is obsessed with Gabimaru. It will be interesting to see how their battle plays out and if some of the things he said are true or not.
Trigger Warnings: violence; gore; death; child death; forced drug use;
Overall, it was good but not perfect as usual. We learn more about the new characters and their past. I'm especially interested in Jikka (the one on the cover). I'm also super curious about who is going to survive the island because I'm 99% sure pretty much everyone is going to die. The problem is I'm getting attached to these characters too quickly and their deaths would make me super sad. Aaannd after many many chapters I'm finally understanding the Tensen and their motive. That's the beauty of Jigokuraku in my opinion. Whether Tensen, Criminal, or Executioner, you can relate to many of these characters. We are getting so close to the end and I'm scared.
More of a 3.5 star rating; Shija and Jikka are both menaces but for slightly different reasons. Shija is so obsessed with Gabimaru I’d be surprised if this came as a shock to him, which hopefully it doesn’t. Meanwhile Jikka gives off the energy of a lazy oaf but he seems more menacing than Shugen. All of the alliances seem shaky in one way or another, and the only alliances I believe are very stable is Sagiri and Gabimaru, and Shion and Nurugai. With the way things have been going I’m very curious to see how the characters actually make it off of the island.
