Another book with an inconsistent and confusing characterization. The heroine is constantly described as being meek, quiet, soft spoken and shy but Grace is far from shy. This girl did not have one shy or timid bone in her body. Even in the damn bedroom. So I don't understand why the author kept having the heroine be "stunned" and "shocked" by her own daring and boldness when that's literally the only way she acts throughout the whole dang book. What, cause she was raised in a convent? Nah. Not buying it. Be consistent. Just because someone blushes a lot does not make them shy. I really wish authors would realize the difference. Don't keep labeling a character as one thing, but keep showing them as something else entirely. That's not character growth, that's inconsistency.

Sir Ewan Gilroy who has been recently knighted finds he is in need of a wife. Lady Grace he believes is the woman of his dreams, but since her husbands death Grace has planned to atone for her past and refuses any such notion Sir Ewan may have. So arranging to escort Grace himself to the convent he tries his best to convince her he would be the perfect husband for her. After awhile Grace comes to realize that her feelings for Ewan have changed, but still believes this is the path she must take.
So when they arrive at the convent Grace is overwhelmed when the abbess informs them there is a priest on the premises ready to marry them. Soon after, Ewan's true depth of character emerges when he defends Grace from a series of treacheries and proves he truly is the only man for her. I found Grace and Ewan's story to be extremely moving, and found that the entrancing, honourable characters grew throughout the tale. It will captivate fans of Scottish romance.

Lady Grace, has been watching her husband, grow weaker from fever from a wound from a boar while hunting. She has stayed by his side, and when he makes a request from her, she can't refuse him. After he dies from his weakened condition, she is forced to leave, knowing the brothers of her late husband, will only use her for their own needs and greedy desires. While staying with her brother and his wife, her plan is to continue onto the convent, having feeling a need to atone for past sins. She grew up in the convent and desires to go back there. But her brother has different plans for her...he desires for her to find a husband and have children. When one of his battle buddies, a Sir Ewan Gilroy comes for a visit, desiring a opportunity to court and marry her. At first Grace is firm in her resolve to go to the convent, but Ewan is determined and is not a man to be swept away with foolish notions. His plan is to show Grace that he plans on keeping her as his, no matter what!

Bride Of A Scottish Warrior is the first book I have read from this author. I may have read her years ago, since her name is very familiar to me, and her writing was like visiting with a old friend. However, for the life of me, I can't recall which book of hers I had from her. So I will just claim this is the first book of hers that I can actually recall. I have recently seen this book pop up, quite often in ratings and reviews, and so I decided that I need to take a chance on this one. And I have a certain weakness for medieval historical romances...especially with a Scottish theme to it. This story takes place in the early 1300's, and I do love this time period. Its full of passion and raw sensuality that is so appealing and makes you crave for a time of kilts, sexy brogues, and Scottish castles and the kinship of clans.

Let me start with our magnificent hero, the bold and daring, Sir Ewan. What a man! Seriously I adored his character...I almost wanted to swoon just so he could catch me! LOL Unlike some heroes we see...he isn't intimidate by marriage or love or devotion...in fact he craves it, and desires it. And he goes in search of it. He wants someone to share and build his life with and he won't settle for less. I loved how he is afraid to search after what he wants, and holds nothing back. When he meets Grace...he knows she is the one. She is the one woman he wants for life, but there is one problem...she doesn't return that feeling. She admires him and respect him, but she has no interest in marrying anyone. Now onto the lovely Grace. She has such a stubborn personality....in fact too stubborn, but I am too....and so I felt a kinship towards her. I felt as I was reading this one...I could relate with her in so many ways. She is strong willed and very passionate even though she plans on entering a convent. What I really liked about her character was her willingness that when she makes a decision she stands by it with full heart and she is the perfect match for Ewan. They both have passionate natures, and I loved seeing them fight for each other in the end....and what a love affair they have.

The story isn't all roses and daisies though...there is a villain. Pretty good one too. He really puts these two through the wringer...but I found it was a good thing...it really makes them come together and fight for each other and the life they are building together. This was such a wonderful story...I enjoyed every single page. I was fighting for this couple all the way!! And those intimate scenes...were sensual and emotionally provoking....definitely had me needing a fan or even a cold bath...but they weren't super HOT, in fact tame compared to some other books I have read..but were so provocative and powerful in its intensity!! A story to win your heart....Heartwarming till the end!! WILL CAPTIVE AND STUN YOU!

Well I am just adoring Basso and the amazing romances she creates. Bride of a Scottish Warrior is the second one I've read from her and, seriously, she has me smitten. She's a wonderful storyteller that really wraps you up in her world and transports you to another time--in this case the Scottish Highlands of the 1300s. It's just a fabulous experience.

The quick of it is that Grace and Ewan have met during his quest for a wife. Something Grace has vowed she'll never be again after the tragic death of her husband. But circumstances, family and life may just have different plans for her.

Things I loved!

The rich world--One of the things I love about Basso's writing is how rich it is. It's easy to get swept away into the time period and what's happening. It's not always an easy life but the passion, strength and determination of the people is just stunning and you really feel like you're right there with them through everything.

A marriage of convenience--I loved both Ewan and Grace. They're amazing together. It's an arranged marriage of sorts. Or marriage of convenience. He desperately needs a wife with a large dowry to help provide for his people. And Grace needs protection and safety from a brother in law who is out to use her for his own means.

Ewan--He's a good man who has fought hard for everything he has which now includes lands and people who have been struggling to survive and need his protection. He's been shunned most his life because he's illegitimate and he battles that to this day no matter what he's sacrificed and done. He'sstrong, honest, caring. Quit the sexy beast and one it would be easy to feel safe with. Basically. I loved him even if he was a bit blunt and had a little cocky male thing going. I loved it.

Grace--I love Basso's heroines. They're just incredible. Grace is strong and independent and wants to lead her own life but she's not unrealistic and is reasonable and smart about it. Nothing TSTL other than one moment but it was one I could even understand. She's a hard working and sweet and doesn't expect or want others doting on her. She's just a good woman you could be proud of.

There's a bit of humor and some great chemistry while Ewan chases Grace and tries to convince her to be his. She's really set on never marrying again and returning to the convent she grew up in and it wasn't an easy battle for the poor sod. Their interactions were excellent and always passionate and interesting.

Things I could have skipped!--Not really anything!
There was one small spot that lacked a little carry though--a group was called for backup but things were handled before they arrived and no mention of them being sent word or showing up. A pretty small point and pretty much the only little blip for me. Okay, okay. I would have liked a wee bit more heat. But that's just me. lol What was there was good I just love a little extra sexing happening.

So, basically, some major book love happening. Bride of a Scottish Warrior was full of amazing characters, a lush world that'll sweep you into the past, heartache and healing, loss and love and true romance winning the day. Definitely one to check out if you love highlanders and incredible romances.

Author: Adrienne Basso
First published: 2014
Length: 244 pages (epub), 3950 locations (kindle)
Setting: Scottish Highlands, 1315
Sex: Explicit but not frequent.
Hero: Bastard son given a run-down, ruined castle and land by King Robert I , Robert the Bruce, King of Scots.
Heroine: Young widow. Childless. Brought up in a convent to be a nun. May have killed her husband.
Trigger: Euthanasia/assisted suicide.

An intelligent, moving medieval historical that delves into an uncomfortable area - assisted suicide. When Grace aided her dying pain-wracked husband in ending his life she set in motion changes and violence. The act and it's resolution may leave some readers, particularly those opposed to euthanasia, uncomfortable and angry. Basso compares fundamental (perhaps militant?) Christianity in the Medieval context with a forgiving God, drawing connections between the past and the present. Strong, superstitious, unwavering views of religion or a humanist, loving, forgiving God?

Cleverly written and highly recommended.

Sweating sickness:
A virulent disease that struck England with multiple epidemics from 1485, the English Sweating Sickness has an unknown cause and could kill within hours. Was this what Ewan suffered? If so, Basso took some liberties with it's symptoms.

Connected Books:
"Are your books part of a series? Do I need to read them in any specific order?
Readers inquire all the time about the connections in my novels. None of my titles are part of a structured series. They are all stand-alone stories. Therefore, it is not necessary to read one book to understand the plot/characters of another, nor is it necessary to read the books in any particular order.
I do, however, have cross-over characters in many of my Regency novels. Some make brief appearances in several books; others are secondary characters in one novel and then a main character in another."

One of the reasons I believe that Scottish historicals are such huge hits, is the complexity of the story. Scotland's history was so emashed in loyalty, honor, politics and the need to protect their land, that sometimes it appears as though the story writes itself. Of course to make that claim would be a true disservice to the outstanding authors who actually write them.

Sure there are stories written that seem to be easy reads. Enjoyable but lacking in that certain something that gives the stories their magic. Fortunately for us, Adrienne Basso is one of those authors with magic.

Lady Grace had been raised isolated from her family. Raised to take the veil but once her brother became Laird he brokered a powerful marriage for her. Most of the seven years of her marriage were spent as a war widow and when the war finally ended, she found herself a widow in truth. A widow with a powerful enemy. Escaping her husband's land and returning to her brother's, Grace makes him promise that she won't have to marry again. Of course her brother is a Highland Laird, he is going to do everything in his power to change her mind. So when his friend, a newly created knight, comes seeking a bride, Grace is in dire straights. Especially since the attraction growing between them is completely visible. But Grace has a secret sin she feels she must atone for and insists on returning to the Abby.

Sir Ewan Gilroy has been raised from unwanted bastard to a knight of Bruce's realm. He has also been granted an estate in the Highlands. But this property had been raised in the war and Ewan needs more than just a place to rest his head. He needs a bride with a dowery. After scouring Scotland and being rejected again and again for his lack of heritage, Ewan heads home. Stopping to rest at the home of a good friend, strong ally and powerful Laird. Only to discover that all he has been looking for was right there. Now he just needs to convince her that he's the one for her.

A beautiful love story complete with challenges that must be met. Powerful enemies and hidden passions. Triumph is there if they can learn to work together, to lean on each other. Grace must share her deepest secrets before Ewan can truly stand as her shield and stand he must.

I really enjoyed this rich and passionate story and look forward to many more from Ms. Basso.

Lairds and Tartans and Brogues..oh my!

Dinna fash yerself. Yes, this is a deep-in-the-highlands-of-Scotland story and yes, there's lots and lots of Scottish brogue; however, Bride of a Scottish Warrior, by Adrienna Basso, hit the right spot. It was actually quite refreshing and a lot of fun to read a Scottish romance again. I suspect a lot of this was due to Ms. Basso's prose. Bride of a Scottish Warrior was a fast, easy read with no surprises. If you're looking for a light-weight Scottish tale, this book is for you.

There's a gentle heroine, Grace, a widow but not a virgin widow. There is a big, big, strong, brawny hero, Ewan, who is one sexy guy. And big. He also happens to be illegitimate, however, because he fought for Robert Bruce he has been rewarded a home of his own - way up in the highlands. When he gets to his new home he finds the castle is falling apart and his people are starving - but he's our hero, he's got a plan. He starts the long process of rebuilding. While all of his hard work sees results it isn't enough for anyone to survive the winter. Following his dominating mother's strong encouragement, he's off to search for a bride with money. He goes hither and yon searching for a bride, but all the nobles turn him down because he's illegitimate. Feeling depressed, he stops at the stronghold of his friend Douglas McKenna. Och! As luck would have it the non-virgin widow Grace is Douglas' sister and she has taken refuge there.

Why has she taken refuge there, you may ask. Well, her first husband has died under some mysterious circumstances (or not so mysterious) and there is a fight going on as to who should be the next laird. Grace has decided to seek refuge with her brother first, but then go to a convent, and she has no intention of ever getting married again. Of course we know that's just silly thinking on her part; this is romance, after all. After some sneaky maneuvering by her brother, Grace and Ewan are soon on a road trip to the convent. A very long road trip.

This book is loaded with a bit of everything. We have a road trip, a wild boar attack, a convent under siege, an evil brother-in-law, brawny sweaty men without shirts, a mother-in-law from hell, witchcraft accusations, monks, priests, and the scourge. All packed into 200 pages or so. This book isn't any heavy-duty angst filled story. There is nothing new, nothing ground-breaking; there are no surprises. However, I still enjoyed every minute of it and even though it is a standard Scottish yarn, the hero was a wonderful hunk who would have done anything for his lady love. This was a refreshing story that made me happy. It was as if I was with a trusted old friend.

A very sweet, delight of a read, Bride of a Scottish Warrior was absolutely fantastic. I loved this book! It was totally engaging, with lovely romance and thrilling danger, and I enjoyed every bit of it. Loved it!

Grace was a lovely heroine. She was stronger than she first appeared, though in a quiet way. Rather than outright defiance, she simply held on to her strong will and refused to let anyone force her into anything. And, she was a genuinely kind character. I really liked her. I thought she was a great heroine.

Ewan was amazing. I so adored this man. He was so sweet and utterly charming and just so endearing. He was a kind and sweet man, but one who was also very clever and formidable if you got on his bad side. I absolutely loved this charmer. He was wonderful.

The romance was great. Grace and Ewan were so lovely together. They started falling for each other from the minute they met, and it was very sweet. Not to mention the chemistry between them. Definitely some steaminess there. I thought they were a perfect couple.

The plot was fast paced and I was utterly hooked the entire way through. The threat of danger from Roderick (a man determined to use Grace to gain power) kept things interesting. I really enjoyed the story and the ending was absolutely lovely.

Bride of a Scottish Warrior was a brilliant historical romance. I totally loved this book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Romance lovers, this book is a must read.

Grace Alastair is a widow determined never to marry again. After her period of mourning, she plans to go back to the convent that she grew up at and dedicate her life to helping others.

Ewan Gilroy is in need of a wife with a large dowry. Unfortunately, being born a bastard has made all of the noble families turn down his marriage proposals that is until he gets to the home of a friend. Ewan is instantly attracted to Grace and will do just about anything to get her.

Feeling guilty about the death of her husband, Grace is determined never to marry again. It doesn't matter that she is attracted to Ewan, she can't marry him. Thinking her brother is taking her back to the convent, Grace is surprised to find that Ewan is leading her escort.

Unbeknownst to Grace, Ewan is taking her back to the convent in hopes of changing her mind about the marriage. Will Ewan be able to convience Grace that marriage to him is better than life at the convent?

This story was an enjoyable read. Grace was determined to never marry again even when she would like nothing more than to have her own family. She was a strong woman that held on to her convictions and it wasn't until someone other then herself was threatened, did she give in to Ewan's marriage proposal. I also really liked Ewan strength of character. Even though he was a bastard, he made the best of his life. Through hard work, he was able to get an estate of his own. He didn't has that "woe is me" attitude because he wouldn't inherit anything from his father.

This was my first book by Basso and it definitely won't be my last!

Thanks go to Kensington Books via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

Historical, Romance

Scotland

Sir Ewan Gilroy is newly knighted and in desperate need of a dowry and a wife. Ewan is famed for his charm but widowed Lady Grace is determined that it will not work on her. Ewan feels that Grace’s plans to enter a convent is a waste of both her beauty and her fortune. Even with her family urging the match Grace proves to be a challenge for Ewan as no woman has ever proven to be in the past. She proves to be his equal in both spirit and passion.

Grace feels that to atone for her past she must never remarry. Most certainly not to a brash and reckless warrior. Yet Ewan proves to be man beyond compare no matter if he is defending her honor or stroking the desire that she never dreamed she possessed. With the newly formed trust between them threatened by treachery, Grace must decide if she wants to reach for the happiness that is suddenly within her reach. And if she is willing to fight for the love of one very bold Highlander.

This is story that takes readers back in history and brings that time to life. The story comes to vivid life with every word that this read. The characters are interesting and the plot pulls the reader into the story more and more with every page that is turned. The reader will get lost into another time and place and will mourn when the story is over even with the satisfactory ending. The action moves the story line along well and keeps the reader engaged with the story. It also gives some history for the time period that makes for an interesting read.

EXPECTATION: I expected the normal Scottish love story. Ewan from the synopsis seems greedy. Let's see how things pan out in this one.

REACTION: I just want to talk about Grace for a minute. I really enjoyed her character, she was genuinely kind and thoughtful. She truly felt responsible and remorseful over the death of her husband and that really set the tone for her character throughout the book. As the book progresses she shows a stronger side and it fits well into her character. Ewan I also enjoyed and I liked him with Grace. I think her change in attitude towards him was a swift change but welcomed. Ewan was making a fool of himself trying to win her affection and I am so happy she finally agreed to marry him. Ewan at first seemed greedy but seemed to change once he got to know Grace and care for her. I think a lot happened in this book as far a plot. They got married and the plot continued. I liked that the plot continued farther than just Ewan's and Grace's relationship. I thought it was entertaining to see Grace not get along so well with Ewan's mother. Grace and Ewan's first time together was nice. The sex was not incredibly frequent like some other romance novels. The cover however is like most other romance novels, it's average, nothing to write home about. And definitely not how I picture either of the main characters, but oh well. Overall I really enjoyed this book. I'm giving it four stars.

Oh Ewan you sexy beast, "'tis an admirable quality to put duty first," Ewan said smoothly. "I look forward to sitting beside ye at the evening meal. Ye will be joining us then?" I mean the boy is just yum yum, "'tis obvious that ye deserve only the best and finest." Sir Ewan smiled Charmingly. "When I have coin to spare, I'll shower ye with gifts fit fer a queen." I mean the boy just makes hot promises, "we must provide for our people first," he said gently. "As fer yer needs, well, I vow that I shall see to them far better than a gold necklace of gold and gemstone." I mean I don't think Grace wants to feel this way about Ewan but the girl is falling fast and I loved how Ewan wants to do anything for his girl, "aye, yer body has been beside me, but yer laughter and teasing smile are gone," she said. "Ye're distant and vague. Most days I feel as though I'm intruding upon yer life and it saddens me." Ewan blinked in surprise. She spoke the words plainly, without accusation or self-pity. Guilt swamped him. He had vowed to make her happy, not bring her distress." Sometime's when nature calls nature calls, "he nearly smiled. She sounded so unlike herself - arrogant and in command. "Dearest wife, I must rise from this bed to answer nature's call. I implore ye to either help me or get out of my way." I really did enjoy reading this book, I loved Ewan so damned much.

I mostly enjoyed this sweet sensual romance, although it has to be said that I don't enjoy second chance relationships - divorcees, widows and the like -  nearly as much as I do a traditional blushing bride.

Hey, it's my escapism - don't judge me!

That said, in this instance, the heroine, Grace, could hardly be described as experienced in matters of lurve since her late husband was very standoffish and often away travelling with the Bruce. After his death, and despite still being very young and appealing, Grace is convinced that the convent is the only place for her, and she makes it known to her brother she wishes to give the rest of her life to the service of the Lord.

Our hero, Ewan, has other ideas. He's determined to bring home a noble bride and has decided that lady grace is the one or he'll have no one. His determination to change her mind is aided by the fierce desire that sparks between them. But is his rugged charm enough to convince her to give up on her future as a nun? Time alone on the journey will certainly put that to the test!

I found the plotting to Bride of a Scottish Warrior to be a little slow, in places and the antagonist rather weak. Were it not for the likeable hero and heroine I may not have rated this as high as I have overall it was enjoyable but quickly forgettable.

I liked this book very much, this is the first book I have read by Adrienne Basso and I will enjoy reading more of her books. Grace and Ewan are a great couple, it was lovely to read their story. Grace is a widow, her first husband is slowly dying from a hunting wound, and he just wants to die in peace. Grace is at his side until he passes, her first husband's brothers are fighting over who will take control of the clan when her husband dies. One brother accuses Grace of murder, but is the accusation true or not?
Ewan is gifted land and a keep by King Robert, but it is a total mess, he needs a bride with a good dowry. He also realizes that he wants a bride, Ewan is a bastard and is being turned down by all potential bride's families because of his birth. Ewan travels to his friend Brian's keep who is Grace's brother, this is where she is living after leaving her husband's family. Brian tells Ewan to try and win Grace, Grace doesn't want to remarry, she wants to atone for any sins at a convent for the rest of her life. Can Ewan convince Grace to marry him?
Lovely book, lovely characters, and a great story. Good love scenes, really enjoyed this one.

Set in Scotland in the 1314, Ewan is bastard born who has been knighted and awarded land and now is in search for a bride who is a lady with a dowery, being a bastard he is not accepted easily, but Brain McKenna has fought with him during the war and thinks he is good for his sister.

Grace has recently been widowed, she wants nothing to do with marriage and wishes to enter a convent, although she has been raised in one, she has another reason why she wants to return, and why she keeps refusing Ewan's advances and offer.

I didn't really connect with the characters and the romance, Ewan's character was not very clear to me, I kinda liked Alec's character better, he is Ewan's Captain of the guard and friend.

Grace's character I think changed, it might have been the circumstances she was in, and that her character grew and developed and she came into herself with Ewan, but I was Iike who is this?

Overall an average read that has all the elements of a highland romance but nothing new or emotionally gripping.

Sir Ewan Gilroy, a newly knighted bastard son, who fought for the King Robert the Bruce. He has earned his title a new lands for his valor on the battlefield. His lands are in need of severe repair, his people need food and shelter. The solution is to take a bride, odds are not in his favor, being a bastard son. He begins his quest for a bride who brings a title herself and coin as her flowery.

Lady Grace, a recent widow under strange circumstances seeks refuge against her brother-in-law by staying with her brother and his family. Just bidding her time, until she can return to a life at a convent, where she was raised.

Sir Sean & Lady Grace meet and the two of them are set with what they want. They are in for a battle. He knows what he wants and so does she. The battle of the minds begin but so does their passion. Who will win and can they defeat the evil that comes?

This story flowed very smoothly. The passionate love scenes were amazing and hot. Just the way I like them. If you love the genre, pick this story up.

The Epilogue was very sweet.

I really enjoyed this book. It is well written, the story moves at a good and believable pace, the characters are interesting and likable, the love scenes are spicy and there are no big misunderstandings or love triangles.

Ewan is a wonderful hero, he knows what he wants and is determined to get it. And what he wants right now is Grace. I loved that he was patient with her and that he realized his love and was not afraid to show it. Grace was also a great heroine, she is loyal, smart, loving and kind.

I think the story started great, got a bit sickly sweet in the middle and finished up very well.

There is some modern verbiage used - if that kind of thing bothers you - you have been warned. I don't think it really distracted from the overall feel of the book.

This is the second book in a series, I didn't read the first one, but in no way felt lost or confused with this installment. There are a few references to events from the first book - but they are very minor and don't really tie into this book directly. So it did not diminish my enjoyment of this story.

This was a very nice story. Ewan and Grace were really great characters. I liked how they interacted together, and I have a lot of respect for Grace. By how she handled her first husband and how even though she acted in a way she didn't like she stood up and made the best decision. But the guilt had her going back to a nunnery where she felt she belonged but she really didn't. I felt for Ewan and how he was trying to find a bride to help his new keep and to be a wife to him. I liked the fact that he was honest with Grace abut needing her dowry and how he handled her attempts to sway him from his course. These two might not have started out in love but they at least started out with respect for one another, even if it was grudgingly for Grace. The problems with Graces' old brother-in-law were meet head on and while each wanted to protect the other they really found out how much in love they finally were. This book is not all sunshine and roses but the down parts really are more like little dips and the two handle them admirably. I really did enjoy reading this book.

True love wins out! Of course Grace could not recognize or accept her attraction to Ewan. But at least she recognized that marrying him would be okay, and a better option than living in a convent for the remainder of her life. Learning to accept that not all would condemn her for previous actions, made it easier for her to accept the idea of a second marriage. Ewan has a heart of gold. The two were fated to be together.

I was surprised by Moira's reaction to Grace, since she very much wanted Ewan to marry. I was even surprised that she preferred a commoner versus someone of good birth and a dowry, along with an alliance to a strong & respected clan.

I was very surprised at the witchcraft tact taken by Roderick. Despite having read many historical romance novels, including ones where witchcraft has been suspected, I did not see it coming in this book.

I look forward to reading other books by this author. She has certainly kept my attention and surprised me as the story developed.

Seems like everyone is doing Scottish romances these days and Ms Basso doesn't disappoint. If you want to read a good romance, this one is fab. You have a sexy, hunky Highland warrior Sir Ewan Gilroy who has been knighted with castle and lands. He always dreamed of his own property and now needs a wife. His search leads him to his old friend Brian McKenna who has a sister Lady Grace who is widowed living with his family. Brian made a promise to Grace stating that he would not force her to wed again. Grace wants to go to the Church to be a nun, but Ewan will persuade the lovely woman that his affections are true. He can't see Grace going to a church being submissive. She has too much spirit and opinions being wasted on such a life. Sir Ewan will prove to Grace that he can be trusted to give her a life with love. Can Grace really depend on him? Read this romance filled with a determined man bent on his quest for getting what he wants. Thanks Net Galley for letting me review this book.

Sir Ewan Gilroy was born a bastard and even though he is now a knight and been gifted property from the King, everyone still sees him as a bastard. Grace is a lady with a secret and not wanting to marry again her only option is to become a nun. Once Ewan meets Grace he knows that she is the woman for him. Ewan must use his considerable charm to woo Grace and break down the walls she has built because of her husband’s death. A wonderful Scottish romance has a wonderful group of characters and is very funny and Ewan is the perfect sexy Scottish warrior. This was my first read from Adrienne Basso but it won’t be my last.

This novel reminded me of the old courtly novels, such as the Arthurian legends. Convinced he'll show himself worthy of being a husband, Ewan launches a campaign to win over the lovely (and rich) Grace. Cheeky and romantic, this novel brings out some of the trials and tribulations the knights of the round table must have felt when wooing ladies.

Both characters are really strong and indipendently fun to read, but the scenes where they are together really shine, bringing to life not only an honest and beautiful relationship cum marriage, but also a way of life and love that transcends periods in history and literature.

Gilroy is looking for a bride, Grace is trying to avoid an other marriage. Attraction and circumstances bind them together and romance flies. Adrienne Basso created a very interesting, engaging story that kept me turning the pages. She easily brought you to a different place and time and made you feel as though you were there. Looking forward to more of her books

I really liked this one. I loved that Grace was a strong woman who really wouldn't take crap from anyone, even her brother. Ewan did his best to try and win her over to get her to marry him and we find out whether or not that happens.
I look forward to reading more of Adrienne's books!

(Not to expose myself but 4.5/5 good trash stars)

Why do I keep doing this. Am I really a 40 year old house wife that’s been married for 20 years with grown children and nothing else is as exciting in my life? Yes, apparently I am. Someone stop me. It’s getting very embarrassing. One, maybe two, pushing it at three trash romance novels a year is okay but this many is getting ridiculous.

Who am I kidding? The high drama and high intensity for absolutely no reason really just speaks to me. The ✨escapism✨ I really do be needing.

This book had a fun plot at least. And don’t be fooled by the cover… it’s not just approx 300 pages of filth and sex. It actually does have a story that’s actually kind of interesting to read about. But suspend your belief a bit because some of the shit that goes on is WiLD. It does have 🌶🌶 too.

Once again, women’s rights? Hmmmm kind of nowhere to be found. But don’t worry this man is different because he wants a wife that he will actually listen to and respect and all that - I’ve heard that before!! It’s like the “I’m not like other girls” trope but… in erotic fiction novel main male love interests. Like okay sir you don’t need to be so “I am so different I will actually respect you and not beat you up”, we got it you’re different.

Consent… she was not totally respected. Mans be kissing this gal without asking first or without knowing she wanted to kiss him. But then my gal just ✨couldn’t resist his charms✨ and the consent followed after that. Pls in real life don’t do this, it’s not cute, it’s rude and harmful to force someone to kiss you. It will also most likely not end up in the person liking you but rather them cutting you from their life and blaming you for their trauma when they start going to therapy a couple months later. That’s on lived experience. Tehe.

To conclude, I’m still a big old bag of trash. This is really what my year has come to. I have got to find a different form of escapism… nah screw it, trash romance novels it is!

P.S: I am starting a shelf of trashy/erotic fiction on my bookshelf cause I want to live my full trash life. How fun! Bring on the mini mass paper backs 😍

P.P.S: I will not be reading them in public though. I am not that far gone.
