Rate this book
This book was published in parallel with the exhibition "Souvenir of Kutahya" at Benaki Museum of Islamic Art, Athens - Greece (May 2021 - January 2022).

A richly illustrated and scientifically documented catalogue of the exhibition of the same title, which is hosted at the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art from June 2021 to January 2022. Through the original and extremely charming material, various aspects of the pottery production of Kütahya (end of the 19th - early 20th century) are reflected, with emphasis on the period of occupation of the city by the Greek army (July 1921 - August 1922).

Many ceramics made in Kütahya during the Greek occupation, bear Greek commemorative inscriptions, often with the initials or even full names of their owners, and accordingly serve as important historical evidence of specific social and cultural referents. The research extends to the dispersal of the refugee craftsmen of Kütahya after 1922, particularly in Greece, allowing considerable space here for an account of “KUTAHIA POTTERY Co." and the adaptation of the Ottoman decorative repertoire to the new socio-economic and cultural environment. This study concludes with a brief consideration of the Armenian potters who settled in Jerusalem, as well as the revival of the pottery industry in Kütahya itself in the early years of the Turkish Republic.
