Total Want of Propriety #2

Total Want of Propriety, Volume 2: Georgiana's Reclamation : A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
In the aftermath of their tumultuous early acquaintance, the newly married Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth Darcy spent their months in Portugal building a flourishing relationship built on respect and the deepest love as they learned to support each other through the myriad trials besetting them – especially the peevish and bitter Georgiana.
Returning home to England, the Darcys reunite with their loved ones and take up the reins of their duties at Pemberley and elsewhere, whilst finding their place within Society. When suddenly faced with disastrous opposition from the Fitzwilliam family, Darcy and Elizabeth must present a united front before London’s Upper Ten Thousand. Can they endure the unforeseen attacks, unparalleled scrutiny, and unwarranted gossip as they defend their marriage and love against the onslaught?

Battle lines have split Society, and the war has begun. Who will support them? Who will betray them? And might Fitzwilliam’s and Elizabeth’s growing communion provide the means of Georgianna’s Reclamation?

Total Want of Propriety: Georgiana’s Reclamation is Not a standalone novel. It is the second volume of a two-part story, resolving the story begun in Total Want of Propriety: Darcy’s Reformation. Both volumes are clean stories, novel length, and feature British and historical spellings.

Please Note: Total Want of Propriety is one story spread across two volumes, Darcy's Reformation comes first, and Georgiana's Reclamation comes last. Both volumes are necessary to complete the story.

Warning: Total Want of Propriety: Georgiana’s Reclamation deals with the themes of physical, emotional, and mental recovery from the trauma of past physical and verbal abuse.

Volume 2 - Return to England
If you have not read Volume 1 of this story, it is recommended that you do, as this second volume is a continuation of the first and is not a stand-alone book.

This second volume continues with the return to England of the now married Darcys, Georgiana and Mrs. Annesley. Ongoing is the extreme displeasure of Lord Matlock and Lady Catherine and their attempts to destroy Elizabeth’s reputation and the Darcy marriage by means of a legal suit and, the spreading of vicious lies by Matlock and his cronies along with the newspaper rags of the day. The Bingley sisters also have their share of the nasty conversation.

I couldn’t help but appreciate the irony of the various reporters/newspapers in the book not ever finding agreement amongst themselves in their columns, as they supported their favoured side—not unlike today, which goes to show that indeed, “some things never change”. Admittedly, I was quite entertained by those articles.

As events unfold you are both frustrated at the maliciousness and injustice of it all, yet rallied by “Team Darcy” as they all work together to thwart the dastardly machinations of Matlock. ODC is not without support, and their true friends and family members unite to help carry them through until the legal action taken against them is decided by the court. As in Second Son, Ms. Boardman tells a story that contains a degree of angst, but it’s not the crippling kind as she surrounds ODC with the love and support of wonderfully written characters. I love these people! That said, their main support and anchor is always one another.

Meanwhile, through much introspection, Georgiana is also working through her own conflicts of conscience, gradually “removing the scales from her eyes” by coming to understand herself and her past actions and, gradually repairing her relationships with her family.

There are definitely some sad and emotional moments—some involving the Bennet sisters, one in particular. A sweet reunion with Major Oddfellow from the first volume is also moving. These and other scenes brought me to tears. In her writing, Ms. Boardman does not shy away from expressing, with compassion, the difficult moments of life and death.

In this well-researched work, Ms. Boardman proficiently intertwines a number of past non-fictional historical figures, as well as some familiar Austen characters into her writing. She also amazes me with her vast vocabulary. I love learning new (or old) words.

As lengthy as these volumes are, I hated to say goodbye to these brilliantly written characters and see the story end. Yes, there is a happy ending and the villains all get their just due. There is a bit of a surprising epilogue that focuses on the life work of Georgiana, parts of which remain timely for our day.

I loved this book and highly recommend it whether you enjoy a longer read or not. If you love JAFF it’s worth your time.

Long book of angst

Even though Darcy and Lizzy win their legal battle with Darcy’s uncle, it didn’t seem to me things were over.

SPOILERS

During the trial it comes out the Earl thought of burning down Pemberley. He still has enough power and money to hire people to do that. The book series shows how it is almost impossible to protect yourself from a rich, powerful man. A parable of true throughout history and true now.

In the second volume of this story we found the same idiosyncrasies. But again the story is a good one and is interesting. (cf. Vol.1 review - Total Want of Propriety, Volume 1: Darcy's Reformation : A Pride & Prejudice Variation )

In this volume, the names, titles and connections to ODC are repeated again and again. The history of each character is expanded upon frequently. Sometimes in the middle of a dialogue.

Again, Mr Darcy and Elizabeth's relationship is lovely.

I read to the end of the last chapter (which should have been the epilogue), but could not go through two pages of the epilogue... I just couldn't.

So, I did like those books, but I do not believe I could read them again.

Oh! And it is official, I Loathe the word 'ere' now.

Due to Georgiana’s actions, the story has branched off from there, mainly concerning the marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth. Georgiana’s growth in this story is slow as she watches the abuse of Elizabeth and her character all the while protecting her from not only society but her family. Darcy and Elizabeth continue to show the world they refuse to bow to Lord Matlock interfering in their lives.
This was a long but very heartwarming story.

A review of the ENTIRE story.

I left a rating for Volume One, but my review encompasses both volumes.
This is another masterfully detailed and researched story, much like the author’s first endeavor, Second Son. This time, the prime focus is not Fitzwilliam Darcy, but shared between Fitzwilliam, Lizzy, and Georgiana.
It was a heart-rending beginning for Lizzy, being expelled from Longbourn with only the clothes on her back; although the author begins the tale with Fitzwilliam’s thoughts as he races to help her.
The extended Bennet family/not-quite-family (who says family is only those with blood ties? Not my family, that’s for sure!) saves this tale from devolving into a pessimistic maudlin mire or a too-good-to-be-believable fairytale. Lizzy has choices, yet events still leave the need for Fitzwilliam to help her and pave the way to their coming together. I love that Col Fitzwilliam is a baddie…not the Big Baddie, but a minion of twisted intent to work against Darcy and his happiness.
Georgiana’s part has been merged with Lydia’s from the original novel; she is the one ruined by Wickham, and is the driving force behind Darcy and Lizzy coming together.
Darcy and Lizzy’s real trials start in Volume Two, with the Big Baddie/Major Villan trying to prove that the marriage is null and void. There are too many intricacies (much like real life) to go into here, but it makes reading this amazing tale worthwhile.
This author is also one that just does not just stop the story at the wedding/birth/or whatever is the major resolution; she also has a detailed epilogue that leaves you satisfied.

The title is misleading……

Most of this book is about Elizabeth and Darcy, and many other non P&P characters, with Georgie appearing almost as an afterthought until the final 3 or so chapters. At that point the narrative switches to her and her growth. Perhaps it was just my mood at the time, but many tears were shed at two distinct occurrences in the book (not mentioned to avoid spoilers). It seemed that it was the epilogue that was in fact Georgie’s reclamation.

We’re I not dealing with Covid-19 at the time I started the first volume, I would not have finished it or read this one. Parts of this volume were enjoyable seeing the villains (portrayed herein) receive at least part of what they deserved. However, so many characters, even including ODC, were so different from canon that the only similarities were character names, some locations, and quotations from the original P&P used in very different contexts. There were also names and references to other Austen characters and stories though they were frequently different from canon as well.

Despite the enjoyable overall story, I felt it could have been told without so much repetition of E and/or D thinking about the past or declaring their devotion in exactly the same descriptions over and over. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend these volumes to most JAFF readers. Some may love it; sadly I did not.

Ambitious

The two books in this series are a very ambitious undertaking. It’s clear the author did her research. Yet, one cannot but help feel that the author really needed a good editor to help her along. There are many interactions that get repeated over and over and over again, without really adding to the story. Even with the family trees at the end, I’m still not entirely sure who everyone was. Lizzy was too perfect, her past pain mainly seemed to exist to provide a cover for angst, as otherwise there wouldn’t be any. The book also came across as philosophically preachy, reminding me of a different JAFF I had read that was basically a Jacobin pamphlet.

For all that, it was unexpectedly compelling as one needed to know how the villains would get their comeuppances. So there is a good story structure there. It just really needed a very skilled editor to help the author bring that out from under the mountain of words.

wow

Ms Boardman has successfully managed several things I usually dislike: an abundance of non-canon characters, excessive length, considerably different setting, and extrapolating characters from other stories. Surprisingly, it works. The non-canon characters were a diverse lot who enriched the telling, as did the borrowed ones who were woven in seamlessly and believably. I loved Mrs Jennings’ support of ODC. The Portuguese setting and connections were interesting, especially wedding customs, though I, along with some of the characters, wished that Darcy would simply get on with it. The length was so deterrent; when I finished the second book, I promptly turned around and read both again. I also enjoyed the numerous apropos quotes, references, and the author’s extensive vocabulary. Well done, Ms Boardman.

If ever one wants to read a book that was mostly about the love and dedication of all those the Darcy's considered family, many whom were not in canon but part of this author's two-fold-tale, this half will fulfill the need. The tale was a lovely story of a family that backed the Darcys when they faced a troubling set of months. It was a tale of sadness, of loss, and cruelty, but this time it was more a tale of resilience, love, and openness of those you deem your friends and family. It is a beautifully written tale of good overcoming evil, and of learning that one's happiness is not always found how others may see it for them.

Beautiful

These two books are so beautifully written. It was one of the most moving storylines I have read. Bravo to this author! I laughed and cried and couldn't put it down. Darcy is the man we all fall in love with. After Elizabeth is beaten he wakes up to the fact that he loves her and proves it to her over and over. I read these two books through Kindle Unlimited but will now buy them for my library because I know I will want to read them again.

Couldn’t put it down

I laughed, I cried, but mostly I got very little done as I read this book over two days. This sequel was even better than the first volume. I enjoy longer volumes, so this was up my alley, though some parts did drag a bit. Four stars for that and for typos (mostly grammar, like a misplaced word; good read, nonetheless, and I will look for others from this author.

Quite a good read this book could do with a lot cutting out of it then it would be a great read if both books were cut down slightly and not so wordy they would be excellent reads
