Rate this book

I was born and raised in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, on Lake Lucerne, a very picturesque area with mountains and lakes. I grew up in a house full of book lovers. As a child, I sneaked in my brothers' rooms to read their adventure books like "Ivanhoe", "The Leatherstocking Tales", "Treasure Island", "Robinson Crusoe", "Huckleberry Finn". Or I persuaded my mother that I was old enough to read romances (they were really harmless!). To make me happy, I wanted nothing more than read a good book while eating an apple, and to be left alone!

My mother, a poet, encouraged me to try my hand at writing at an early age. My first publication was a fairytale, which appeared in a Swiss newspaper when I was eleven years old.

But I did not turn into a writer right away. I became a teacher, then a reporter and a foreign correspondent.

My career has included working as a reporter/editor for Reuters newsagency in Zurich. My time covering financial news for Reuters inspired my book "The Zurich Conspiracy".

From 1990 to 2000, I was the foreign correspondent for “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, the largest circulation daily newspaper in Germany, reporting from Switzerland. After I had emigrated to Canada, I wrote regularly for newspapers and magazines in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

I now reside and work as a crime novelist near Vancouver, Canada, on the beautiful Sunshine Coast (okay, in winter, it is raining a lot). Visitors in my backyard include black bears, racoons, coyotes and bold eagles. You can also find me often in northern Newfoundland on Canada's east coast which is moose, polar bear and humpback whale territory.
My popular mystery thriller series with intrepid RCMP detective sergeant Calista Gates is set in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Another FANTASTIC instalment in the Calista Gates series! I can not wait to see what's next.

I was hooked immediately, and once again I didn't solve the ending. That's one of the big reasons I enjoy these books so much, I never know who's to blame.

My thanks to Bernadette Calonego for my gifted copy!

Another fantastic, multi-layered Calista Gates mystery!

Past and present collide in this investigation, as one man goes missing and dead bodies are found. To complicate matters, someone might be out to kill Calista over matters unrelated to her investigation.

Threads of the previous two books are woven into the plot here. Bernadette Calonego does an excellent job of incorporating reminders, but I think this series is most enjoyable if read in order.

Might be my favourite one so far - this one is action packed and feels more like a locked in mystery with most of the aspects residing on a cruise ship. It definitely left me want more of this crew.

Deswegen zwei Sterne ;-)

I am always eager for the next instalment of a Detective Calista Gates novel to arrive and once again, this new one is a page turner. In this new book in the series I have enjoyed how the various characters are unfolding, their personal lives, their relationships to each other on the team and in this small community. I really appreciate the interplay, and tensions, that are unfolding with each person. It was interesting to see how tourism is an essential part of these communities, and yet, the struggles that come up when people simply 'drop in' to a community but don't really get to know those who live there. I appreciated how this unfolded in the context of the story. The tension continues to build for Calista around her former life in Vancouver, and the mystery that still lies behind her reason for moving from the West Coast of Canada to the East Coast. More to come on that I am sure in the next great instalment with Detective Calista Gates! I am very glad that the author, Bernadette Calonego, continues to write and unfold this series and reveal to us more about life in this beautiful place of Newfoundland and Labrador, its small communities, and the wonderful parts of that, and the challenges that it holds too. Each new book has a greater depth of story telling.

Bay of Evil (A review)
by Bernadette Calonego
My rating: 5***** (Kindle)

Thinking about archeology and crime, don’t expect an Indiana Jones potboiler here. The tale takes place in northern Newfoundland and the Labrador (NL,) where nothing grows high enough to allow anyone to swing by a bullwhip. And the weapon of choice is not an old revolver, but a shotgun loaded with rifled slugs suitable for bear. And the main protagonist is Det. Sgt. Calista Gates, newly assigned as chief to a small and remote detachment while she recovers from traumatic brain injury incurred in Vancouver. This is her opportunity to de-stress and recover. What could possibly go wrong?
The complex story develops around missing and dead people (six years ago and now,) academic infighting, threats against Calista’s life, and the actions of interesting RCMP officers in the midst of cruise ship hordes. It seems everyone is interested in Viking and proto-Inuit (Dorset) archeology. Me too. Part of my enjoyment here is because one of my uncles served in the RCMP in Atlantic Canada.
I got drawn in rapidly by the story, and enjoyed it immensely. Although the ending was a bit lame, I’ll start looking for the two earlier DS Gates novels. Highly recommended.

Yay! Another Calista Gates Mystery!
Calista Gates solves another murder. Despite having to work after an attack that left her with a TBI, the intrepid Calista, yet again, solves a murder or two. I enjoy Bernadette Calonego’s books for the delightful plots and twists as well as the characters. She has the ability to weave interesting information about an area and a people I know little about. Always a pleasure. I look forward to the next installment in Calista Gates investigative journey!

Another great mystery from this author! This is another instalment in the Calista Gates series. I always love books by this author as she writes the most atmospheric and detailed stories. You definitely feel you are living in the location of the characters. It is always great to read a book set in Canada. The mystery and suspense are palpable and the pacing is terrific. If you haven’t read anything by this author yet you really need to.

I give this a thumbs up for pace and flow. I liked the FMC a lot and some of the support characters are likeable. Without spoiling it, I just didn't fully enjoy the process and there are parts that seemed too coincidental without that being explained. The dialogue is good-to-real good and the setting makes me curious about that part of the world. In all, there are too many subplots that are artificially connected. Still, it's a worthwhile read.

This book was fast paced and especially interesting to me as I was recently on a trip to all of the places where this book takes place. I purchased it purely because it was written by a Canadian author about the Newfoundland area. I did not read the first and second installments of this detective series and feel slightly lost about the story. Still not completely sure Of the conclusion. I should read the others, but I did not find this one sufficiently captivating enough to try the others

Another fantastic read about Sergeant Calista Gates. In this book, she receives a cryptic message from an anonymous person warning her about her Vancouver attacker or someone else possibly arriving on a cruise ship. At this time, she doesn’t have any idea what is about to arrive on her doorstep. Great mystery with constant twists and turns in beautiful areas of Newfoundland, that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Love Calista!

She knows her way around an investigation and has an awesome clearance rate!

Her crew thought she was making a mistake asking a larger and better equipped RCMP unit to help them with a missing person’s case and then a murder involving a very high profile archaeologist.

Afraid of spoilers so I’ll stop here.

Another book with one of my favorite detectives. The mystery is good as well as the description of Newfoundland and Labrador scenery and people. I hope the next book is coming soon!

Another excellent read.

Really enjoyed this 3rd book in the series. I am Canadian but have yet to visit Newfoundland. Your books have now inspired me to hopefully visit NL in the near future.

RCMP Sargent Calista Gates has not lived in Newfoundland long but has been kept busy with several important cases. In this newest thriller (the third in the series), she is heading up a search for a famous archeologist who has gone missing in St. Anthony. During the investigation, another person is murdered and an unsolved Labrador mystery may have something to do with both cases.

I am enjoying following along with the main character as she puts her skills to good use in this new book. She is a very strong, capable and intelligent woman and the author makes me care about her and want to know more. The other characters are also well-developed and interesting. Having the book set in St. Anthony (where I live) makes it even more enjoyable. This area has extremely striking scenery and a history going back to the Vikings. Bernadette Calonego does an excellent job of describing these things and brings the area to life.

The book has many twists and turns. At times, there are almost too many threads going but hang in there - the author manages to bring them all together nicely by the end. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next Calista Gates adventure.

Mein Fazit

Erneut tolle Krimikost aus Neufundland und Labrador
