Nikola Tesla was a Serbian boy, who had siblings, but his best friend was a black cat.

One evening, as he was stroking his cat, there were sparks. His father explained that it was electricity. The fascination with electricity continued throughout his life. In college, he studied electricity and later, invented a system to carry electricity long distance. His invention, which he sold, lighted the city of Chicago, then Buffalo in NY.

Nikola Tesla had over 300 patents, but the story focus on electricity. Its straight forward concentration on electricity makes it easy to understandable for children/young readers what he was most famous for. The illuminating illustrations are eye-catching.

My eight-year-old nephew wasn’t familiar with this inventor. It was an interesting story, which captured his imagination.

“Born during a lightning storm, his mother Djuka proclaimed that her son would be a child of light.”

Nikola Tesla, whose name is probably now associated mostly with Elon Musk’s electric car, is the man who gave us the alternating current that powers homes and businesses all over the world.

He was born on 10 July 1856 (Happy birthday a couple of days late, Nik!), and his mother was right. Light was definitely in his future.

He adored his cat, Macak, and when he was startled to feel the sparks and crackling from stroking Macak’s fur, his father explained what electricity was. (Cats feature in many of the illustrations, including a robot cat at the end.)

“There were sparks and a crackling noise!”

Dare I say that was just the spark he needed? He and his mother started making little machines at home. (She should be getting more credit, I bet.)

“And before he was six, Nikola had created his first motor all by himself.”

He kept imagining things and building them, inventing all the time. The world had electricity, but there was no way to carry it over long distances without losing power until he discovered alternating current, the AC electricity we know today.

So off he went to New York to meet Thomas Edison, who set up the first electric power station and gave us the light bulb (globe).

“Nikola was recommended for a job with Thomas Edison”

When it turned out Edison didn’t believe in alternating current, Nikola sold his idea elsewhere, and eventually, a power station at Niagara Falls lit up the city of Buffalo, NY, many miles away.

He imagined robots, remote controls, and all kinds of things that seemed impossible then but which we take for granted now.

“He even imagined that—one day—the wind and the sun would give us endless energy and that messages and pictures could be sent wirelessly, too.”

“He didn’t get rich from his creations, but his imagination and creativity changed the world into what it is today.”

As always, there are four black and white photos at the end along with a short biography with more detail and a reference to another ‘real’ book about Tesla.

A few years ago, I read a fascinating book by Graham Moore called The Last Days of Night, which is still a favourite. It’s about the Edison vs Westinghouse rivalry that became known as the War of Currents, and it really was a shocker of a war (sorry, couldn’t help myself). Nikola Tesla features in it, of course, but that would make heavy reading for children.

My review of The Last Days of Night

It is hard to make this exciting for children, but I hope it might start some conversations. Nikola Tesla’s story is an important one, and I’m pleased it’s been added to the library.

Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto’s Frances Lincoln Childrens’ Books for the preview copy from which I have shared a few illustrations.

Nikola Tesla was a child born in 1882 with imagination, intelligence, and a love of science. His cat, Macau is his best friend. He notices when he pets him that sparks and crackling come off his fur. He learns this is electricity. After this, he wants to learn all he can about how electricity works. He also loves to design machines and devices. At just six years old he creates his first motor.

This becomes his passion. When he is in college, electric lights have not been designed yet. Electricity is developed by Thomas Edison, but it needs a way to travel farther distances. Nikola is the one who invents something called Alternate Current. He is able to use 160,000 lights that are able to light up all of Chicago. He dazzles everyone with an experiment that transmits electricity that travels through his body safely.

He also works on gadgets we still use today such as the remote control. He was always curious and trying to figure out new objects that could be useful. He imagines one day that messages and pictures will be sent wirelessly. This was quite a thing to say at the time.

I learned so much from reading about Nikola Tesla. I had not even heard of him before and was fascinated about his life. For a future dreamer who loves to think of new ideas and make machines, Nikola will be a true inspiration. He shows that things that seem impossible are possible. If you are ingenious and keep working at your ideas, anything can be possible. Dreams can literally light up the world.

Thank you NetGalley, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for granting me this book. I am always happy to leave a review.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Nikola Tesla is one of the most recent additions in the Little People Big Dreams series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. As always this is a great little read for children about another amazing person in history. Nikola Tesla was born in 1856 and after spending time stroking his cat, he got introduced to electricity after seeing sparks. Nikola began making little inventions at home with his mother and this sparked an interest that created the AC electricity that we use today. Children will be familiar with Tesla the car, named by Elon Musk and this is a great book to introduce them to the man who invented the AC electricity of today.
The illustrations are great as always and this would make a great classroom resource for children to access.

Budding scientists will get a charge out of this engaging bio of Austrian Nikola Tesla, whose fascination with electricity led to work with Edison Machine Works in New York, and more than 300 patents as a scientist/inventor. Part of the Little People, BIG DREAMS series, this intriguing book for readers 4-7 gives a compelling look at Tesla through historic photos, a timeline, and a detailed life profile. Highly recommended!

Of course I knew that Nikola Tesla had brought AC current to the world, but I loved reading about his childhood and how his interest in electricity came about. He was born in Serbia in 1852 during a lightening storm. He spent a lot of time with his cat and when petting him one day, there was a spark. His father explained that it was electricity just like lightening makes, and his interest began. He invented his first motor when he was only six! He moved to the US where he worked with Edison to continue to develop and invent. He had over 300 patents. The short paragraphs shares several important facts about Tesla, and there are extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the iconic scientist’s life, for the older reader. The illustrations are quirky and whimsical, adding to the story and captivating younger readers. My oldest grandson surprised me when he said he knew some things about Tesla, and he read the book to himself, but he also listened while I read it to his siblings. I love how these books show how these interests began when the subjects are children, and nurtured and developed as they grow. Another winner for the Little People, Big Dreams series.

How ironic that Nikola Tesla, the little Serbian boy who grew up and studied electricity, was born during a lightning storm!

Children will read about this inquisitive little boy whose dreams began by watching what happened when he stroked his beloved cat’s fur. His mother fostered his curiosity and helped him with all sorts of science experiments at home. Soon his dream was so big…he wanted every home to have electricity.

This would be a good place to stop reading and discuss with little people what their life would be like without electricity! Things we take for granted today were just a dream at one time.

When children continue reading, they’ll find out other great influences in Nikola’s life and how exciting it was for him to see his dream become a reality. Adults can add to this story by challenging older siblings/students to discover why Tesla’s name is associated with an increasingly popular car brand today.

Both adults and children can learn an important lesson from this story.

Children will love the beautiful illustrations by Alexander Mostov. He’s packed each page with so many things to capture a little person’s eyes. The author has written an engaging story and included photos and a timeline to further add to learning about this incredible inventor.

I was gifted this advance copy by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, Quarto Publishing Group, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
Here's the story of Nikola Tesla, the scientist, and inventor whose groundbreaking inventions we still use nowadays. He truly was a genius and his inventions are just incredible!

This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known people for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
This one here is about Nikola Tesla, an inventor and engineer to whom we owe so much of the things we take for granted today. I'm sure everyone would enjoy reading about the person who got such amazing ideas that really change the world we live in.

I really love the Little People, Big Dreams series! This book in the series shows the life of Nikola Tesla, who was a scientist and inventor whose inventions we still use today.

I loved reading about Nikola from when he was a child, up until he was an adult. I found him fascinating. I was amazed at how clever he was, since he was able to create electrical inventions, and bring so much to the world through his work and his scientific mind.

The book has easy to read text, and bright, colourful graphics, which are beautiful to look at.

I highly recommend this book, which is amazing and interesting. I learned a lot from it.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

Another fabulous picture book biography from Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara! Nikola Tesla always enjoyed inventing and designing and had a special interest in electricity. As he grew up he questioned the loss of energy that takes place when electricity is transported great distances. Complete with interesting pictures, simple short paragraphs of text and a timeline at the end of the book, this biography has everything that young readers need to be successful when learning about this famous engineer. I would highly recommend this book to parents and teachers of children in the age 6-11 range. This book is an excellent starting off point for researching Tesla or learning about the concepts related to writing a biography. Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!

Another excellent, biographical picture book from the Little people, Big dream series. Focusing this time on the history of inventor Nikola Tesla, the attractive illustrations and well structured text are sure to fascinate young readers aged 4+
Like others in the series this would work well as a read aloud with young children but would also be a useful independent research resource for older readers aged 7-11 especially as it offers additional information & suggests further reading material at the end of the book. It would make a great addition to any primary classroom library!

ARC|GIFTED|AD|NETGALLEY. Well I won’t deny the cat on the cover immediately drew me in. And wow - how had I not heard of Nikola? He’s awesome and he should be taught in every science classroom! I also must say the illustrations in this are absolutely stunning - the one showing inside his mind was my favourite. Another great addition to the series.

The latest instalment of the incredibly popular 'Little People, BIG DREAMS' series of books features Serbian inventor and engineer Nikola Tesla, who is responsible for some of our most influential and widely used inventions, like AC Power and the Tesla coil. He's one of the most fascinating historical characters I've ever read about.

My children loved this story of how Nikola learned about electricity via his beloved pet cat! The illustrations for this one are also gorgeous.

A fascinating person.

Thank you to Quarto publishing for the Netgalley approval.
I will buy this to add to our physical collection upon its release in September.

Author: Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara
Illustrator: Alexander Mostov
Age Recommendation: Early Primary
Topic/ Theme: Science, Biographic
Setting: America, Croatia
Series: Little People, Big Dreams

I adore Mostov's little Nikola so much. His cheeky smile, his freckles and his hairstyle is a great fit. His blue outfit is very cute too. But one of the best parts of the illustration is the choice to include Telsa's black cat Mačak not only on the cover but on every page. Mačak was important to a young Nikola Telsa, referred to as his muse. Blue is the colour that is on every page, different shades but always there is blue and Mačak. Blue feels fitting for an inventor like Telsa, the colour largely associated with drafting paper is blue. The illustrations are overall just pretty and appealing.

This manages Tesla's story well. One of the interesting things about Nikola Tesla is that he was a lifelong bachelor, it doesn't appear that was meant in the way of a euphemism, as was the way of the time. Though his why for never marrying changed throughout his life. Can't honestly think he would have been a fantastic husband anyway, most scientists this devoted to their work aren't. It does however focus on the earliest part of his life, his most pivotal discovery alternate current and his fraught relationship with Thomas Edison. That is handled as best as possible, for memory it was rather spiteful. I am so glad I found this one, that I sat forever on my public library waiting list for it. It is cute and handles one of the internet's favourite people in a way that is appropriate for the intended audience.

“Born during a lightning storm, his mother Djuka proclaimed that her son would be a child of light.”

It's almost like his mother could relate and predict the most amazing things, this would become part of his life's work, pretty amazing when you think about it.

An interesting book aimed at children about Nikola Tesla, whom I knew nothing about previously to this book, so thanks for the education for myself too. Nikola had a cat and that's what started the obsession and curiousness about electricity through static and his cat and more cats are featured through out the book, a bit like an omen.

The stories being short as they are very wonderful, obviously they are aimed at children and I would whole heartedly like to applaud this but also I think it's very clever how this man's life's work has been condensed to explain to children about the importance of his work and how it's affected our world.

It's also very good for people like me who are able to read informative books but not large chunks of information about people's lives and so this is far more easier to read.

Many thanks to Netgalley and publishers for this wonderful insight into this world through their FREE ARC in return for my review! Enjoy!

With thanks to the author, publishers Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books, and NetGalley for providing me with a digital ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

This is another fantastic instalment in the Little People Big Dreams series, which is fast becoming one of my favourites!

The story tells how Tesla was introduced to electricity at an early age and how, even as a young boy, his mind was always coming up with new inventions and ideas on how to improve the world. This continued into adulthood for him with his invention of AC electricity, which went on to change the world.

The illustrations in the book are excellent as always with this series, and I particularly loved how the young Tesla was depicted among kids of a similar age but in modern times who are all using technology based on inventions that he made. The mini-biography of Tesla (complete with a timeline) at the end of the book is a great resource for young readers to cement the facts learned in the book.

#NikolaTesla

Note: 1 mit vielen Plusszeichen davor
#netgalley #arc

Obsessing over the Little People, Big Dreams books! What a wonderful addition to the set with Nikola Tesla. It is fascinating reading how Tesla came from such humble roots, creating electricity experiments at home, to making such an amazing difference in the world! There are short paragraphs on each page, easily accessible for younger readers , as well as being easy to understand for children being read to by a guardian. The illustrations are as wonderful as we expect from this series: full of glorious colour and bold prints, telling a visual story that matches the words. I learn alongside the children with these wonderful reads. Tesla's story was captivating. Publication 6 September 2022 #littlepeoplebigdreams #NikolaTesla #Negalley #mariaisabelsanchezvegara

Little People, BIG DREAMS. One of a series for adults to read with children and for ESL to polish their English and learn about people who have shaped their world.
A skinny son of a farming family in Croatia had an imagination for things way ahead of his time. Electricity was the thing he loved most and learned how to share it with everyone and even had ideas not developed until long after he stopped working on them.
The illustrations by Alexander Mostov are mostly simple, colorful, and forthright. Every public and school library needs a copy!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Quarto Publishing Group/Frances Lincoln Children's Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

Nikola Tesla has inspired an alternating current circuit to be constructed in my living room.

This book is full of vibrant blue tones and wonderful illustration capturing the attention of young minds. Detailed drawings give us a glimpse into history and the moments that changed the way we live today.

The story of Nikola Tesla is easy to read and full of inspiring moments- so much so that my seven year old decided now was the time to try out electrical circuits. My four year old adored the cat running through the illustrations and storyline and enjoyed spotting Macak on each page.

Another calm and awe inspiring book to add to your Little People Big Dreams collection.

I knew that this was going to be the next book in this series and I was really anticipating it, so I was very excited to see this title on Netgalley! I think this is probably one of the more complex stories in this stories, as iy teaches readers about some basic scientific ideas. That's not to say that this isn't still absolutely perfect for its target audience of younger readers, because it definitely is. It combines this science with the familiar magical story telling and illustrations, and I actually learned a lot from this book too as an adult reader. I really recommend reading this book with a young person in your life!

Nikola Tesla joins the hugely successful Little People Big Dreams books and it's a great union.
Nikola Tesla was an inventor and scientist and many of his discoveries and inventions are ones we still use today.

Tesla worked with Edison and was fascinated with electricity. Edison is credited with discovering electric power generation and Tesla discovered alternating current.
In the Little People, Big Dreams series, although it is aimed at children, it is often the adults that learn something new when they are reading these books too.
The illustrations by Alexander Mostov are a wonderful addition and really bring the text to life.

This is a new book in the "Little People, Big Dreams" series. As always, it is very well-done and introduces the inventor Nikola Tesla to children who may be puzzled that he did not invent cars. However, I do take issue with the fact that Tesla's life is scrubbed and presented as shiny happy - his ideas were stolen by Edison, and Tesla died rather young, and poor. Not only that, but he was regarded as a bit of a quack and a crazy, rather than the amazing scientist he was. I wish younger readers were given less of a sanitized version of the truth in this instance.

Nikola Tesla was a Serbian boy, who had siblings, but his best friend was a black cat.
One evening, as he was stroking his cat, there were sparks. His father explained that it was electricity, similar to when a lightning bolt strikes a tree. Nikola wanted to become an inventor after he discovered the power of electricity.
As time would go on, he would move from Serbia to Paris to New York and was recommended for a job with Thomas Edison. He would later leave Edison’s company and sell his invention to another businessman. He even got to meet Mark Twain!
I loved the illustrations as they brought everything to life on the pages.

It's good to see the famed electrical wizard, inventor, David Bowie lookalike and – most importantly of all – OMD inspiration in this series. It seems the man was keen on knocking up his own creations and gadgets at a very young age, and so his use in this series for inspiring youngsters can only do good. For once the illustrations aren't too bad, even if they do like the fact he had a cat, and the pocket-sized autobiography is just fine for the target audience. After seeing some risibly woke entries, this is a welcome early STEM history read from this franchise.

Nikola lived during a unique time. A time when electricity was making a way in the world and he got to be part of that. Despite Edison not seeing Tesla's vision, Tesla was able to make it happen. A lesson for children, all of us, to never give up when we can see a clear solution.

The illustrations are great. I liked the added content at the end of the book, especially reading suggestions to learn more about Nikola Tesla.

Nikola Tesla is someone who I have always found immensely interesting, and I enjoy how this books tells the most simplified version of his brilliance in a way that children can understand. I thoroughly enjoyed the illustrations as well, I will just say I wish they would've gone into more detail about his love of pigeons.
