Captain America is the people's choice in a timeless run by Roger Stern and John Byrne! These legendary creators begin their Cap adventures with the Machinesmith and his army of robot replicas. But Steve Rogers soon winds up in an even tighter spot: a race for the presidency?! Next, Batroc is back, with Mister Hyde and Cobra by his high-jumping side! The Stern/Byrne run concludes with a timeless tale of horror from Captain America's war-torn past as the vampiric Baron Blood seeks to conscript Cap into the army of the undead - plus a 40th anniversary celebration that explores Cap's all-American origin! This top-shelf Masterworks also includes a return appearance by all-time great Cap artist Gene Colan and the beginning of Mike Zeck's iconic run!
A very solid collection of Captain America stories from issues #247-#260 and among my favorite overall Cap stories along with the Brubaker run. The team of Roger Stern and John Byrne forged thr first nine terrific issues having our hero face off against such foes as Baron Strucker ( with a nice twist), Dragon Man, Machinesmith, Batroc, Hyde, and Baron Blood. Great stuff! My favorite was the two parter against Blood in #253-#254. We get Cap’s “run” for president in #250 and a definitive origin retelling in #255. After that, a creative team carousel but each story was pretty decent. The real shame was Stern/Byrne not getting a chance at a planned but canned Red Skull three-part story which would have been epic.
This is an excellent collection, by and large. After the Roger Stern & John Byrne collaboration, the series suffers from inconsistent art teams until Mike Zeck comes on board. The following volume will be epic!
This volume is very well crafted stories: Cap getting his support cast developed further, a love-interest in Bernie Rosenthal, good use of the Avengers as background but not cross-overs, and certainly an excellent rogue’s gallery. Baron Strucker, Machinesmith, Dragon Man, Batroc, Mr Hyde, and more. The use of the Presidential Election was well done also (remember these stories are from 1980). Also well-done are the flashbacks to Cap’s earlier life and adventures.
If only the transitional issues were more consistant, this could have rated Five Stars.
Captain America is back in action, thanks to the team of Roger Stern and John Byrne (for the most part). Plenty of action, some decent moralizing, and some really clever twists in the plots all add up to an entertaining collection. Oh, and Steve Rogers gets a new girlfriend!
