Thanks to Grand Central Publishing for my ARC of Elaine Murphy’s “I Told You This Would Happen” for an honest review. 📚 💕
We’ve all read books before where the author gives us a slow trickle of information to understand our story and how the characters got to this point, but that’s not what you get here. Author Elaine Murphy immediately tells us our lead character Carrie is no innocent soul; no bones (pun intended) barred, Carrie is absolutely an accomplice. I haven’t read a story before where we’re in the mind of the guilty, and how she’s lying to everyone, and I loved the fresh take. It solves a lot of questions as to how a sociopath really thinks, and in this book, it’s truly delightful. I knew I was going to love the book just by it’s title but also the catchy book art—wonderfully simple and bloody colorful—literally. Great summer read!!

Thank you so much to Elaine Murphy and Grand Central Publishing for my copy of I Told You This Would Happen. This book is about Carrie, a girl who lost her sister to a serial killer and is very happy about it. The only problem is that Carrie is that serial killer. When she attends a group for local sleuths, she finds out that a victim left a note that incriminates her and she realizes she has a lot to lose.

Thoughts: This was a quick and fun popcorn thriller. I didn't know it was a follow up to another book, and I do recommend reading that one first to fully understand what's going on. I was pretty confused because I didn't know this was a second book, so that made it hard to read. The writing is a lot of fun and it was upbeat for a suspense book. I call it a popcorn thriller because you can read it quickly and it doesn't have too much substance, but it's a pretty fun book. 3-stars

Goodreads Rating: 4.07

I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.

Synopsis: Four months ago Carrie Lawrence lost her sister, Becca, a serial killer unbeknownst to their small town. Carrie attends a meeting set up by the Brampton Kill Seekers, a group of amateur local sleuths, and finds another girl is missing. It may be paranoia, but Carrie cannot shake the feeling that Becca is alive since there has been three hit and run accidents.

My Thoughts: I did not know that this was a follow up to “Look What You Made Me Do.” For me, this one flowed well and I was not lost, the author provided a good backstory to understand what transpired before. The story is told in a single POV, from Carrie, from her perspective. She is relatable, even though she is flawed, and very likable, even through what happened, I rooted for her throughout the story. The story starts out with a bang and continues on a fast paced, page turning journey that I could not put down. I enjoyed this story from the first page, through the last page. The characters are well developed, with layers of depth, mystery, and are creatively written. The author’s writing style was just brilliant, it was complex, suspenseful, gripping, and sinister. The story flowed well, the plot had layers of twists, driven by the characters, and tied up nicely in the end. This was probably one of the better sequels for a thriller book that I have read. This book released a week ago, I highly recommend you go order this one right now!!

So when I saw this cover, I instantly went to Amazon and pre-ordered a copy. Clueless as to what the book was even about. I mean, who cares ! It’s going to look gorgeous on my shelf 💄 .

Just kidding, I went back and read the synopsis and it sounds just as incredible as it’s cover.

Elaine Murphy is also the author behind “Look What You Made Me Do”, that is out right now ! 👀 I read this book last year and I devoured it in one sitting ! The story line was unique and not like anything I have read before. If you haven’t already read this one I highly recommend it ! I Told You This Would Happen, is actually the sequel to Look What You Made Me Do. I Told You This Would Happen, can not be read as a stand-alone so I highly recommend you purchase Look What You Made Me Do, like, now.

I have never been a super fan of series books, however, once again I have proved my own beliefs wrong that the second book cant possibly be better than the first. This book is off the charts! I absolutely loved it, I loved Look What You Made Me Do, as well so its so hard to even attempt to compare, so I will let you be the judge.

Also, I have to give credit where credit is due and I actually saw Darby Kane post about this book and I mean come on, if the fabulous Darby Kane is anxious to read this, you bet your sweet tush you should be too !

I Told You This Would Happen, releases July 12. I highly recommend you pre-order yourself a copy .

Big thank you to Netgalley, Elaine Murphy, and Grand Central Publishing, for allowing me the honor to read and review this book prior to the big day in exchange for an honest review!

The perfect summer beach read! Highly entertaining with just the right about of suspense sprinkled on top.

I Told You This Would Happen got me real good a couple times! Nice little twists I didn't see coming. At times things get a bit ridiculous but it certainly adds to the entertainment factor.

I highly suggest reading Look What You Made Me Do before picking up this one. It was such a great read and intro into book two. I wonder if there will be a book three?

Gripping, mysterious, and sinister!

I Told You This Would Happen is a crafty, complex thriller that takes us back to Brampton, Maine and into the life of Carrie Lawrence, a young woman who is now struggling to juggle her mixed feelings of elation and unease over the death of her manipulative serial killer sister as well as her ever-increasing guilt and dread over just how many secrets and skeletons the local amateur sleuthing group, the Brampton Kill Seekers, will finally unearth and uncover.

The writing is brisk and witty. The characters are consumed, devious, and deceitful. And the plot builds quickly into a mischievous tale of deception, manipulation, secrets, malicious intentions, revelations, deviance, cunning behaviours, familial obligation, and murder.

Overall, I Told You This Would Happen is an edgy, intricate, twisty follow-up by Murphy that kept me amused from the very first page and was an exceptionally entertaining and satisfying conclusion to last years debut Look What You Made Me Do.

Thank you to HBG Canada for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Quick note. If you haven’t read Look What You Made Me Do… Stop. Read that first. Then this. 🙌🏼

She’s never been happier.
From me 🙋🏻‍♀️
This will be the shortest 5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 S҉҉T҉҉A҉҉R҉҉ review ever. I don’t want to spoil this for anyone. But this sequel is off the chain 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼. Footloose may not be dead. Carrie isn’t so innocent. And her BF is even stranger in this book. The kill seeker's meetings are the best chapters.
That is all I can say. Thank you. Good Night 🙌🏼🫣🫣

Hmmmm.

Upon finishing this book I learned it was a sequel to a book I didn't read. I don't feel like I missed anything reading the 2nd first, but maybe that is why I didn't love it?

This plot reminded me of Finlay Donovan and spoiler alert: I do NOT like the FD series. So this one with its outrageous plot, multiple characters and unlikley serial killers roaming around town...not for me.

I Told You This Would Happen by Elaine Murphy is the riveting follow-up to Elaine Murphy’s debut thriller Look What You Made Me Do. I Told You This Would Happen centers around Carrie Lawrence, who’s lived her whole life being manipulated & used by her sister, who just so happened to be a serial killer, Becca. Now that Becca is dead, Carrie should be finally granted the ability to live free from all things scary, but what happens when danger returns? Is she a magnet for horror? Is there another serial killer? Will the Brampton Kill Seekers amateur sleuth club solve the case? Read I Told You This Would Happen to find out!
I thought this book was even more entertaining than Look What You Made Me Do. Once again, the concept was unique & there were so many plates in the air in terms of plot that it was a constant stream of commotion & balancing act of mysteries. I enjoyed watching this juggling act of a thriller.
This is the kind of enthralling book you stay up until 3am reading because you have to find out what happens next. It is extremely fast-paced, which I always appreciate. I gave it 4 stars!

3.5 stars rounded up

Thank you Grand Central publishing for a finished copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Let me start out by stating I did not read the first book, and I did not realize this was a sequel before starting. I honestly could not tell you if knowing that and reading the first would have affected my enjoyability, but this does read well enough as a standalone.

As a thriller though, there really isn't a murder that kicks off the story, this book just feels like it is mostly tying together loose ends from the first. There are countless callbacks to what happened in the previous book, and this story did give me the impression that it was trying to close up all the unknowns leftover from the first. That is honestly the best way to describe this book, it is the aftermath of what happened previously.

Okay, I take that back. There was one murder in this book, but that was about it. And it really was a wrong place, wrong time type of situation.

This is kind of a novel of suspense. I mean, there are certain things that happen that feel like they are building up to something bigger, but a portion of this story was also spent on the main character trying to not be charged with her sisters murders. She does some definitely illegal things throughout the course of this book, but does so in order to try and not end up arrested in the end. The storytelling overall is slow though, and there are a lot of tiny scenes that show the main character trying to go back to a normal life, but ultimately fails because a murderer is technically still loose in Brampton.

The writing was good and kept me engaged, I was able to read large portions of this story each time I picked it up. Ultimately I was waiting for something to happen, so I was looking for tiny foreshadowing clues and trying to figure out who would get murdered next or who was lying. I was a bit disappointed in that respect, but this book was just different than I expected. Not bad, just different.

Overall, I liked the story but felt it dragged on in some parts. It feels more like a conclusion to the first book, which I did not read, and I felt like the suspense was lacking in some parts of the novel. I was surprised by some of the twists in this book, but they weren't anything earth shattering. If I knew this was a sequel I probably would have read the first book before this one, and that might have affected my opinion, but this book was still good enough. Also, phew the toxic relationships in this alone kept me invested.
Content warnings: murder, violence, abuse, vehicular manslaughter, toxic relationships, verbal / physical abuse, kidnapping

I had a great time with this book! I have not seen this book listed as being part of a series anywhere (and I looked) but I would definitely recommend reading Look What You Made Me Do first if at all possible since this book picks up shortly after the events of that book. I was eager to read this next chapter in Carrie’s life and see how she would fare once she is away from her serial killer sister, Becca. Although highly improbable, this book was highly entertaining.

Carrie is glad to be away from her sister’s unhealthy attention. She wants to make a go of things with her boyfriend, Graham, and maybe even buy a house. After multiple invitations to the Brampton Kill Seekers meetings, she finally decides to go and leaves knowing that she has something to worry about since she appears to be implicated in the disappearance of a local girl. Carrie works to make sure that nothing leads back to her which is somewhat complicated by the fact that a local detective seems to be following her around.

So this is an excellent read. Carrie wants to do good things and her heart is primarily good but she has been pushed beyond the grey area by her sister so many times she recognizes the fact that she doesn’t always land on the right side of the line. The book had plenty of action to keep the pages turning and there were some pretty big surprises that kept me glued to the pages. I really wanted to see Carrie find a way to come out on top but wasn’t sure how it could happen.

I would recommend this book to others. There were times that I worried that Carrie was going to get herself in even more trouble with her actions and was really worried about her. I had a great time making my way through all of the twists and turns of this highly entertaining novel.

I received a review copy of this book from Grand Central Publishing.

3.5 ⭐️ I didn't think we necessarily needed a sequel to Look What You Made Me Do, but we got one and I actually liked it even better than the first book! The writing was snarky and fun and not surprisingly, the plot was also a bit outrageous and ridiculous. I actually really enjoyed the toxic relationship between boring Carrie and her sister, the serial killer. There's more humor this time around and the laughs helped me overlook some of the book's flaws. Overall a fun series, but not one I'd recommend you rush out to read. Get to it when you get it.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book; all opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to be an early reader.

I didn't enjoy this quite as much as I hoped to, but overall I thought it was entertaining. I hadn't realized until I was several chapters in that this is actually a follow up to another book. It's not listed as a series, but it definitely is. While I did originally feel like I was missing something, enough was explained that I didn't feel the need to stop reading this and read the first book instead. However, maybe the first book would have had a little more character development because they all felt pretty flat here.

Things picked up for me towards the end. Being able to just roll with how unrealistic everything was helped make it more enjoyable. I'll give this author another try in the future.

*** Must read ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ before reading this book to fully understand***

This book is very complex and confusing at times, but it is so worth the read. Her writing style never bored me and it is suspenseful the whole way through. You truly have no idea what is going to happen next!

The main characters in this book, Becca and Carrie are hilarious and sinister all at once. The dynamic just works so perfectly even if Carrie doesn’t want it to. I highly recommend this book. I will say it wasn’t as good as the first one but I think it could be because I read them both within the week. I should have spaced out the time more.

My favourite line in this book: “If there is a god, he's only giving one sign, and it only involves one finger” page 152

Would love to see this as a tv series.

this was…. not good. to be FAIR, it is a sequel to a book i read over a year ago so i didn’t remember a lot of things that they were referencing but there was like little to no plot, no twists, it was so boring and i remember really liking the first book so this was a big bummer. i couldn’t wait for it to end

A decent follow up to Look What You Made Me Do.

Readers should definitely read book 1 first to get the most out of this one.

This story picks up with Carrie, months after she escaped from the serial killer Footloose, but with her sister, Becca, still missing. Carrie hopes to move on with her life, making plans to buy a home with her boyfriend, Graham, and they even get a dog. The Brampton Kill Seekers and others in town continue to seek answers for missing person cases that weren’t solved by the bodies found associated with Footloose. Carrie and a guy named Nikk, whose wife is missing, join with this group seeking answers. Then Becca returns! There’s another murder, lots of sneaking around, old and new clues and connections to cases, and helping a woman stay hidden from her abusive husband. Detective Greaves gets too close to the truth, pulling in Graham and almost ruining Carrie’s chance for happiness. But maybe Becca can get all evidence to point to someone else? Maybe Carrie can still move forward with hopes of happiness?

It’s a crazy, mixed up, murderous story. Very far fetched and unbelievable. But still interesting. I think die hard mystery fans would be annoyed by how gullible everyone is. But it had enough of a plot that I could follow along, make some theories, and stay interested enough to wonder what was going to happen. Becca is still infuriating! And Carrie is easily manipulated. It’s frustrating! But still an interesting mystery.
It’s maybe a 3/3.5 ⭐️ because it’s not great, but going up to 4⭐️ on it because it’s a pretty interesting page turner.

This was a super quick read with a great amount of suspense. If you havn't yet read the authors first book, Look What You Made Me Do, I suggest starting there! While you probably could go into this one without it, it definitely reads better as a sequel as there is some info you will need.

I thought the writing and the plot were quite clever. It had a few little twists here and there that weren't crazy, but gave the story some interest. The characters are quite diabolical and crazy but yet, I loved them! If you're a fan of suspense, this should be on your list! I like the way the story came together but part of me is wondering if there might be a third book. I wouldn't hate it if there was!

Suspenseful, Sinister & Spine-Chilling

I was so extremely excited to see that there was going to be a follow up to “Look What You Made Me Do.” It was wonderful to get back to seeing what Carrie's life was like after losing her sister. This thriller started out with a bang, and I was unable to put it down! Murphy's debut novel had me hooked from the first page in both of these books and her writing style is everything that I love in a mystery author! I highly recommend this author and I'm excited to see what she releases next!

When i picked this book up randomly, at Target, i didn’t realize it’s the second in a series. Honestly though, i think it read great on its own and i understand the whole story without needed the first book. I also DEVOURED THIS. If i didn’t fall asleep last night, i would’ve finished it in one sitting. It reminds of Findlay Donovan, like a funny light-hearted thriller that’s easily digestible. Very good. Looking forward to more from this author.

🚨Spoiler Alert 🚨

✔️ I loved Becca - the serial killer sister - in Look What You Made Me do, so was happy to have her back - I actually wish we got more of her and less of Carrie - although Carrie did exhibit some sisterly behaviour as well 🙊! If there is a book 3, I hope it’s from Becca’s POV
✔️ overall I enjoyed the story and the pacing as good
🔘still a lot of humour in this story but I feel like the first book was darker, which I preferred. If Carrie and Becca are back again, I’ll be reading

I didn’t love this one as much as I wanted …

the first few chapters were beyond intriguing - I mean, a sister serial killer act? count me intrigued

after THAT big reveal in the first 30% though, it kinda fell flat? I mean, it was entertaining but not engrossing.

I wished for a dual POV where it showed the good and the evil sides of every mystery instead of just a one-sided conversation with the MC on whether she’s just a good person or a bad person …

INSTEAD I loved how every moment was a new reveal for the MC and we figured out along with her how it fit into the entire picture

overall, I felt the writing dragged on for a bit while the characterization had little improvement throughout the entire story. but I adored the side characters and wished they had more story time!!!

the conclusion of the story was satisfying and predictable for a thriller queen such as myself, but it was still beyond enjoyable and fast paced for any mystery lover!!

thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!! this one’s out this week!

Four months after losing her sister, Becca—a serial killer unknown to everyone else in their town—Carrie Lawrence is finally free of her manipulative clutches. From now on, she’s keeping her hands clean, no more hiding dead bodies in the middle of the night, no more lies.

When a new string of deaths share an eerie likeness to her dead sister’s preferred murder method, Carrie Lawrence is on the hunt for a copycat killer.

This is a follow up to Elaine Murphy’s debut thriller, “Look What You Made Me Do”. (🙈I didn’t know that until I finished the book - so you can definitely read this as a standalone!)

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝:
🥸The comedic undertone in the book. Although it’s a thriller, it was more of an entertaining murder mystery. It reminded me of the show “Dead to Me” on Netflix.
✍🏼Can’t go wrong with a fast-paced book! I read this in about two days because the writing was so seamless and I was hooked on the storyline.
😨The ending had a twist that I didn’t predict - I was so sure I knew how it was going to unfold but was totally wrong.

𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐟:
🤪There were some parts that were very far-fetched and over the top for me.
😒One of the main characters was a too manipulative for my liking

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫:
✔️Murder mystery with comedic undertone
✔️Sister dynamic
✔️ Fast paced summer thriller
✔️ Ending with a twist

Thank you to @grandcentralpub for the #gifted copy! 🤗

I definitely recommend this one if you’re looking for an entertaining, fast-paced fun thriller.😌

Stumbling Scarecrows! 😳😯🤯😳

This book was absolutely fun, witty, suspenseful and a great take on dark humour as well! If you enjoyed Blood Sugar by Sascha Rothschild, you're gonna adore this one! I absolutely couldn't get enough of this fun, crazy, darkly witted ride. I gobbled it up like the snack size chocolate bars I bought two weeks before Halloween and "somehow" demolished them beforehand. (Oops!) I love how Murphy took something sinister, suspenseful and absolutely exciting by adding a flair of humour and fun making it more irresistible. The connections and revelations along the way were even more enticing and kept me stuck to my couch and needing more and more. She spins this plot with such fun and finesse it keeps you entertained, invested and loving the originality she gives. I desperately need more fun thrillers like this!

Mყ 𝐒ყɴ𝐨ρѕιѕ: Lightening stroke twice for Carrie. Escaping out of the clutches of one notorious serial murderer in her hometown, Footloose; who also murdered her sister Becca, another serial killer she's free from. That is until months later a copycat murderer seems to have arisen that's leaving Carrie on edge just as her life was coming together. But an amateur group called the Brampton Kill Seekers, have located a clue to a missing disappearance of another survivor of Footloose... and it's pointing to Carrie.

As the sequel to Look What You Made Me Do, I Told You This Would Happen picks up right where we left off. I don't want to give too much away about this one, so I'll keep things short.

I will start by saying that this book could be read as a standalone as most of the events from the first book are recapped in the first few chapters or briefly mentioned throughout the book. I would definitely recommend starting with Look What You Made Me Do first since I enjoyed that one as well and loved having the background from the first book as this one continued the story. I think it made me enjoy this one more, knowing what happened in the first one.

This book focuses on Carrie as she tries to move forward with her life and I found it to be very entertaining, fast-paced, hard to put down and funny. Some things throughout the book might have been far-fetched, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment and kept me guessing where the story was going the entire time.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one! I would recommend both Look What You Made Me Do and I Told You This Would Happen if you are looking for a suspenseful read with some dark humour that includes the serial killer trope and touches on a unique sister dynamic.

This is a follow up novel to Look What You Made Me Do (which I didn’t realize til I bought it, because Goodreads lists it as a standalone, and while you could read it as a stand-alone I guess and still follow along with the storyline, I’m glad I bought and read Look What You Made Me Do first because I felt like it helped me understand what was going on better and I was more invested in the characters by now

That said, I enjoyed this book even more! It was just as wild and fun as the first book, and I didn’t feel like the pacing was off. It was suspenseful, fun, and witty too (I found there was more dark humor in this one than it’s predecessor)

I was also very satisfied with the ending of this one!

So I totally screwed up and didn’t realize this was a follow up to Look What You Made Me Do 🤦‍♀️ but I had no problems following along and was given enough details from the first book. So can you read this as a stand alone? I think so. I Told You This Would Happen was a really fun thriller that was entertaining, funny and had a good mount of snarky wit. And some twists along the way 😉. Was it at times a bit ridiculous? Yes, but that was definitely part of the charm. Perfect summer read! 3.5⭐️
