Teaching Amos: From text to message

Rate this book
The fundamental conviction underlying the series is that when the Bible is faithfully taught, God's voice is clearly heard. Few commentaries are written specifically with the preacher or Bible teacher in mind, and with the sermon or Bible talk as the point of reference. The preacher, the sermon or talk, and the listener are the 'key' drivers in this series.
'Teaching Amos' is written by Dr Bob Fyall, who has a particular passion for preaching and teaching the Old Testament. He is author of a number of books, including the Focus on the Bible volume on Daniel.
Having first outlined a number of possible approaches to constructing a series of sermons or talks on Amos, Bob unlocks the text based on a suggested structure of nine sermons or talks. Individual chapters are specifically geared towards working from text to sermon, combining rigorous exposition with relevant application, always with an eye to the main teaching point of the passage.
This volume will not only encourage better preaching on Amos, but serve as a timely reminder of the striking relevance of the prophet's message for today.

An excellent resource for teachers and preachers of Amos. Fyall has clearly worked much harder and at a greater depth in Amos than this short tool might suggest; he demonstrates broad reading of the more technical offerings, a grasp of Hebrew that on occasion is necessary for interpretation, and a gift for packaging and applying Amos for the Christian reader

Very useful outline of the prophecy of Amos. Obviously written with preachers in mind, but everyone wanting to understand this short prophecy would find it helpful. No great detail, of course, but it is aimed at giving a broad understanding of the book, and it does this very well.

3.5 stars. Helpful introduction for a preacher or Bible study teacher. I’m ending up not using his preaching divisions, but still think he gives good ideas for main points and outlines for a series through the book. One critique: while he mentions that preaching should be Christicentric in the introduction, he doesn’t do much to develop that in the individual chapters walking through the book. Maybe that’s an intentional choice to not give too much help and force teachers to meditate on the text, but I think it would be helpful to see that modeled in a book that argues for such a method of preaching.

Useful guide to Amos - but not as helpful as others in this series due to a lot less application and illustrations.
