The world is changing, and it needs a new Alpha. It needs me.
I was doing well enough before the Apocalypse, but fast cars and penthouses mean nothing when the world changes into a wasteland filled with parasite-infested mutants.
Now, the iron will that made me king of the boardroom is going to make me king of this new world. I am going to unlock my true power, I’m going to cultivate it, and I am going to dominate!
And I won’t do it alone—I will build a tribe of beautiful women to share my victories with.
Disclaimer: This western cultivation fantasy adventure for men is part one of a new series. It features: - A Cultivator MC with two Cores. - Surviving the apocalypse with a redhead who looks great in a pencil skirt and a torn blouse! - A foreboding visit from a feisty catgirl from another world! - A daring escape from a post-apocalyptic and infested city to save a bratty blonde.
Tried reading it because I like fantasy/cultivation stories. MC/ story can't go one page without mentioning how sexy something is or how much he needs to have sex. Seems like the cultivation aspect of the whole story is just an excuse to write more sex scenes.
This fantasy-dystopia novel series is mostly about sex. Barely any cultivation or story. It's as if, the moment that this apocalypse happened the author, and the main character, lost all of their IQ (intelligence quotient) and devolutionized (degraded/deteriorates) into cavemen/instictual animals. The author creates an Over Powered, OP, main character, a lawyer, without any martial arts training, any physical abilities, any charm or charisma, and just because the author wrote it that way. Lawyer, main character, fights and shoots like a pro, without any previous military or self-defense training. By the way, the apocalypse isn't really explained either. It just happened. So the story is extra in this novel series, the sex, and all of the sexual liaisons are the reason why the author bothered publishing this novel series...like a really bad porno... without being able to see the beautiful women or hear the surreal moans...
We all know what we are getting into with this genre and this kind of title. But that is no excuse for not putting in the effort. It's like it was written by an actual porn script writer from the 80's. I mean, is it that hard to do better than the riveting dialogue of 'pizza boy delivers sausage' or 'plumber cleans pipes for lonely housewife'? Feels like it was written by a group of teens juiced up on mountain dew.
I saw from the title a miss of story types that becoming the bread and butter of indie authour and Jack Bryce made a total flop of it. The story feeds on Hero-man masculinity for getting sexy women and using OPish powers with training that just felt bored reading it that skip the naughty chs and scenes and only looked for plot points to follow every thing else was an eye sore.
This series is focused on special kind of readers who don´t mind the constant focus on the protagonist´s genitals and sentences like "he needed to claim and breed her"...
I also disliked that the protagonist becomes super strong effortlessly all of a sudden.
Currently waiting for my download for the fourth book to complete the series… in a week. Not only is this one of the best series in the harem/men’s genre that I’ve read, but also includes the total package: this is by far the most realistic and fun apocalypse series I’ve read from the character arcs, realistic behaviors, character by play, character individualism, and even timeline of events. On top of that is world building: the timeline is great and is currently building a sense of suspense overall and excitement for the MC group. Now stack on top of that the cultivation and fighting aspects: amazing! A little slow as it builds, but feels organic and has great promise as things progress. Great fight scenes that are nicely spaced, realistic, and extremely entertaining. Can’t forget the cherry on top, either! The sensual scenes are some of the best and hottest yet, keeping things enticing and reaching for a bottle of…water to calm you down so you can dive further into the story. Excited for the series to continue and immediately followed the author (Jack Bryce) and will look into their additional work.
At my request I received a copy of this audiobook in order to give a fair and unbiased review.
Genre: Apocalypse harem with sudden awoken powers and cores that can be cultivated
Power dynamics in harem: Early to say (this story mainly focus on the first girl, though 2 more are introduced). Women are dedicated and though they are headstrong in the end they defer to the MC. Explicit/adult material: Explicit. Very well written. Humans and cat-girl. Breeding. Claiming.
Summary: A lawyer and divorced farther is in the middle of disciplining the young intern Bailey for her for not being sufficiently respectful when the world changes forever. What seems to be a huge explosion leave the world forever changed with an many humans transformed into hordes of zombies of different kind (think left 4 dead). At the same time a power is awoken within him and a bond is created with Bailey. A bond that powers his ki when reinforced through sex. Together they set out to find and save Baileys room-mate and his son and ex wife.
Narrators Voice diversity: Good. Easy to follow and never monotone. Pacing and intonation: Exceptional. The story and dialogue really comes to live and immerse you fully in the book and the scenes. Sex scenes: Very well done. Gabriel Michael and Katana Jones are expert narrators and it shows. Overall: 5 / 5 stars.
The book’s strengths. - The writing is great. The suspense of travelling in a world without order and monsters everywhere is palpable. - The explicit scenes are well done. - The cultivation is naturally described and doesn't feel forced. - The narration
The book’s weaknesses. - I was worried, because I am usually not a big fan of the main character being "ALPHA". But it is not really emphasized in the book and more comes out of him becoming powerful and very protective of his girls.
Writing quality: 2 stars. The non-smut parts are written incredibly badly.
Lore/worldbuilding: 1.5 stars. I'd like to give this 1 star but there is lore, it's just really dreadful. I would have been happy with generic zombie apocalypse but instead we got parasite interdimensional aliens (that look like dongs with legs) and pseudo eastern philosophy terms like qi and core to explain how MC levels up. I don't wanna read about parasites in my smut.
Smut quality: 3.5 stars. Literally the only reason I'm writing this review. if you can ignore everything else about it, the novel's got great sex scenes.
Smut quantity: 3 stars. It's a good balance of sex vs story. Other commenters claiming that it's porn make me lol. uh...yeah? Are you lost buddy? Seems like quite a lot of goodreads don't understand this genre.
MC: 1 star. MC gets called a narcissistic sociopath 20% of the way in by the female lead and does nothing to disprove that. this is seriously the worst part of the book, sharing this guy's headspace, it's like an incel fanfic.
Tropes:
- "Bodice ripper" - MC thinks he's a badass tearing the girl's blouse open the first time they do it. in the middle of an apocalypse, with no way to get new clothes. At one point they stop at his *luxurious penthouse apartment* so he can change but she's SOL until much later on.
- "You're a creep, I'm the protagonist" - MC hates other men eyefucking the girl even though he did exactly the same thing, also her boss and fired her for not respecting his authoritah in the opening pages of the novel.
- "Magic dick" - MC's magic power is recharged by having sex and can be given to others, magic cum etc.
Summary: 2.5 stars rounded down. I'll try another of his series and see if it's any better, the smut is fine, it's just the story packaging which is distractingly terrible. Maybe Bryce can write a likeable MC? We'll see.
Finishing this book was actually my third attempt at reading it over the last year. Previously I've read Country Mage and Frontier Summoner, both by Jack Bryce and both series I absolutely loved.
This was not them.
Even being a different genre, there was none of the charm and authenticity I found in those other series. While the setting is cool, none of the characters were particularly likable and the MC was little more than a horny teenager who just discovered girls have boobs. Almost the entirety of the first six chapters is Ben getting distracted by and ogling Bailey every couple of paragraphs.
If you can push through to chapter 7 it begins to improve, but only in that the constant ogling goes to every couple of pages. I'm a long time fan of haremlit and all it entails, but even for me it's excessive. I'm not even going to dive into all of the issues I have with Ben being a supposed "Alpha" or I'll be here all day.
Needless to say I'm not a huge fan of this first book, but given how much I enjoyed Bryce's other books I'm at least giving the second instalment a chance.
The worst of the harem-lit books I've sampled so far.
"Cultivation fiction" is a subgenre of litrpg where the characters build homesteads and gather resources and followers (*cough* harems) to become the biggest and best bosses.
The MC is an asshole biglaw partner who's about harass the uppity junior associate who dared to talk back to him, when the apocalypse happens. They wind up in some sort of zombie apocalypse and the asshole biglaw partner turns into an Alpha beating up zombies and saving the junior associate. So she suddenly decides he's hot and they have sex straight out of Penthouse Letters but more poorly written. He also feels an "instinctive" need to "breed" her, which she is now totally onboard with.
The game elements were underdeveloped, the sex was as awful as the dialog, and the characters are cardboard. Even by harem-lit standards, this was just really pretty dire. Again, take my review with a grain of salt since I only read the free sample, but it definitely did not tempt me to continue reading.
The blurb for this put me off for quite a while, but after seeing it in my recommendations for weeks I eventually caved. I really dislike the alpha-bro as an MC, and this has one of those, but with a bit more depth. In some ways.
This is what it is, and I have evaluated it based on that criterion. As a cultivation book it's pretty light, but I find the hardcore cultivation books tedious so that's not a bad thing. Of course he has to cultivate by banging hot babes, but it's a "Fantasy Adventure for Men" so why not? The sex is a plot device so it pops up regularly, but the book isn't overwhelmed by it.
Let's put it this way: I'm reading the next one. It has enough actual plot to be diverting, and that's all I expect from a book like this.
Based on the blurb, I wanted to like this book / series. However, less than a hundred pages in, I decided to DNF. Why? The author is a 13-year old delinquent horndog that believes women are sluts. At least that was the conclusion I came to based on his writing. Imagine a normal guy (probably in his late 20s) with a pretty hot girl, but they are in dire life or death circumstances. She bends down to retrieve something, and this author has the MC sport a boner right away. He calls a flashing glance at her panties slutty. I don't mind a small amount of spice in a story, but hell's bells. This author will go in my NEVER AGAIN list.

I enjoyed this book. Though I felt it was a little short. I'm always a sucker for apocalyptic novels anyways so this hits a lot of check boxes. No real harem yet though obviously building. The system that's been imposed to some sort of cultivation though the details are still vague as both the reader and MC are learning. Obviously the author has a much larger universe in mind that just and invaded earth. However the full extent has not shown itself in this book. At this rate I'm sure in the next 2 books we should learn more. Looking forward to them.
This is a good book for any cultivation lovers out there they're looking for something a little bit different than the usual. I was definitely surprised at how much this book hooks you in, though fair warning, the intimate scenes are not a Fade to Black. And there are a handful of them but they're not overly common nor are they too lengthy. Looking forward to reading the next book.
Its just porn. You an tell with these kinds of stories with the writing style, we don't need constant reminders that the characters are attractive, I don't want to read the word 'boobs' six times a chapter. It makes it obvious that you have little to actually say and need to pad the word count. It's mean, but I wouldn't be surprised if more "boobs" and "asses" were added retroactively to reach the word count...
So.you're a lawyer and a not so nice guy. Now you are a superhuman machine. You need power and the women will give it to you. Thus begins a story of power, invasion, and just good ole debauchery. Strap in for a ride while, Ben and Bailey find their way through it all.
I really enjoyed this story it was fun read the main character took a little bit getting used to for me because I had a hard time identifying with his excitability you might say. Still the story was interesting apocalypse it had to do with aliens instead of zombies so for me it was a fun story.
Been eyeing this book to read for a while. Finally took the plunge and was not disappointed. Unique and twisted apocalypse with strange powers based in Qi cultivation, gorgeous survivor companions and a deeper mystery worth exploring.
Very nicely done. A coherent apocalyptic tale with delightfully lusty characters. The characters are believable and likeable. The fight scenes are intense and fit well with the storyline.
This HS the potential to be an excellent new series!!! Enjoyable characters, cool cultivation and some great adult fantasy activities!!!! This is a true must read!!!
Just the synopsis made me want to throw up. I tried it anyways. But, I still wanted to throw up. There is no way this book is in the 4 star category. Bunch of fake ass comments and reviews. STAY AWAY.
I absolutly love this very well done very unique the story flows well the characters are likeable and there's a certain allur to some of the ladies as well
Enjoyed reading the start of this series. Different take on a apocalypse novel including cultivation instead of being like a video game. Looking forward to more
The story is decent but the character development and secondary character interaction just felt shallow with little depth. It does have potential to be interesting.
Typical Apocalypse setting. The hero discovers his magical stuff, collects women and so on. Even if the description says cultivation novel - the cultivation part is not very prominent.
