До цього тому увійшло вісім оповідань і повість Яцека Дукая у жанрі фантастики та альтернативної історії зі збірок, опублікованих у 2000–2017 роках.
Твори з його ранньої збірки «В краю невірних» належать до метафізико-теологічної фантастики. Сюжети зі збірки «Ксаврас Вижрин та інші національні твори» виводять читача, зокрема, на знайомі з «Криги» обрії альтернативної історії, ба навіть політичної філософії.
Найновіші оповідання — «Втрко» та «Портрет нетоти» — хоч цілковито різні за сюжетами й ідеями, але поєднані настроєм і духом теперішнього життя східноєвропейської людини.

Dukaj studied philosophy at the Jagiellonian University. He successfully debuted at the age of 16 with a short story Złota Galera (Golden Galley). He is known for the complexity of his books, and it is often said that a single short story of Dukaj contains more ideas than many other writers put into their books in their lifetime. Popular themes in his works include the technological singularity, nanotechnology and virtual reality, and because of this his books often can be classified as hard science fiction.

This is a collection of shorter works of a prominent Polish author Jacek Dukaj, in Ukrainian translation. There is no equivalent collection in Polish, but most of the stories were published in his Polish collections W kraju niewiernych and Xavras Wyżryn i inne fikcje narodowe. The author got 20 nominations (for both novels and short stories) and won 6 Zajdel Awards – the Polish equivalent of Hugo Awards nominated and voted by fans. I guess he is the SFF author with the most Zajdel nominations.
The collection is split into three parts, loosely linked to Polish collections.
I. IN THE LAND OF THE INFIDELS
The General's move a special technological fantasy world with its own absolutely unique rules and laws, which are not very easy to understand at first. There is a severely augmented General, who is several centuries old and who commands ‘Daredevils’ – some kind of commando wizards. All this time the General served the same country and its royal family, but the current king sees him as a warmonger, so instead of preparing to a war with an emergent new power, he is sent away. there are still supernatural magical creatures like gnomes, dragons, poltergeists, genies, demons, elves but trains and even sharships as well. A solid story that starts with bureaucratic and political intrigues and ends with philosophical, moral, and ethical issues and different visions of the prospects for the development of a civilization 3*
Cathedral a SF story from the POV of a priest, who was sent by the Holy See to a group of remote planetoids named Ismiraids to prepare a report on a supposedly miraculous shrine grown there over a tomb of a possible saint. The problem is that these Ismiraids travel across the universe at high speed and soon will become inaccessible to humanity. 4*
In partibus infidelium another SF with theological questions. There are aliens who want to convert to Christianity but do they have a soul? what are the criteria for the existence of a soul? what about the rationality of non-human races and their right to believe? The story have several parts as these questions are asked on a broader and broader scale. 4*
II. XAVRAS VYZHRYN AND OTHER NATIONAL FICTIONS
Xavras Vyzhryn the novella inspired by Chechen rebellion against Russia in the 1990s is set in an alternative Earth, where there was no ‘Miracle at Vistula’ (in 1920 Polish newly reborn state stops and reverses Soviet advance), so Poland (or part of it) is in the USSR, which for decades eliminated Polish identity. Now there are the 1990s and one of the most prominent Polish field commanders is Xavras Vyzhryn. He is an equivalent of Rambo in this world – a cult military hero with Hollywood blockbusters. The protagonist and narrator is the US reporter of Polish origin Ian Smith, whose TV company has an exclusive contract with Xavras. The story shows that a legend, hero and patriot has another side – a murderer and terrorist, for the history is written by victors and one has to do everything for such a victory. There are quite a few quotes from Heart of Darkness. A very gruesome story. 4*
Rudryk's case a trial on crimes of a long-standing dictator of a small Eastern European socialist state, where advocates state that the accused is actually a clone. What further complicates the case is that clones were imprinted with a character, memories, way of thinking of the tyrant. 5*
A friend of truth. A dialog of ideas the story starts with a quote of a non-fictional book the narrator reads: This man was an enemy of the Jews, an anti-Semite, and as a matter of principle and sporting interest he professed his chosen views with a kind of cheerful frenzy; this denial was the pride and meaning of his life. As we find out, the narrator is sure that Jews rule the world and the story is his discussion with his humanitarian girlfriend. It is largely about political correctness, what questions are allowed to be asked. 5*
Gothic a very grim mystical story, where a secret society in a version of 19th century plans something world-breaking 3*
III. PORTRAIT OF THE NETOTA
The portrait of the netota - this story is hard to follow (and translate) because the narration used an unfamiliar terminology like the very word from the title, netota. As readers find out it is about one more feeling to our usual smell, taste, touch and sight and the main character, Laura lacks it – so she is like us, but in this world she is disabled. The hardest story to read, it is inconsistent, chaotic and full of words of unknown meaning. 4*
Vtrko another bizarre tale, this time about an American visiting a grotesque post-Soviet state. He doesn’t know the language and sees this country as almost a psychedelic trip. The title is a local honorific for ‘the Father of the Nation’, a dead communist dictator and mass murderer, who is surprisingly connected to the protagonist. 4*

За винятком двох останніх оповідань, ця збірка є чудовою. Багато експериментів, не лише альтернативно-історичних, але й філософських і теологічних з елементами біотехнологій, кібернетики, з дещицею трансгуманізму.
Останні два = це мутна вода, яка на фоні із попередніми потоками тексту, для мене читалася як повільне болото сюру. Трохи Уліса, трохи кращих традицій одноосібного внутрішнього репортажу.
Фанатам наукової фантастики рекомендую. Філософам і футурологам також - розважитеся у нових текстурах старих ідей.

_ Давно я не читав (якщо читав узагалі) такого беззмістовного чтива. Хоча, можливо, це просто абсолютно не мій автор. Для контрасту, можливо, і треба деколи натрапляти на таке, щоб більше цінувались автори й книжки, які мені подобаються. Ну й трішки про кожне з оповідань:
1_ Хід Генерала
Тут історія немає жодного сенсу. Незрозумілі імена змінюють одне одного, перекручені середньовічною буденщиною й космічними завоюваннями🤯 Єдиним вартісним був монолог у кінці від прем‘єр міністра _ 1/10 _
2_ Кафедральний собор
Без коментарів _ 0/10 _
3_ In Partibus Infidelium
Цікава інтерпретація застарілості й неактуальності католицизму в мірках міжпланетної комунікації людей та іншопланетян _ 4/10 _
4_ Ксаврас Вижрин
Утопічна історія про дуже дивну боротьбу за незалежність Польщі. Є тут один непоганий діалог про використання ядерної бомби по москві🌝 Але загалом - досить прохідна історія _ 2/10 _
_5 Справа Рудрика 3
Максимально дивна судова справа над диктатором й зачинщиком геноциду, з клонуванням і подібним абсурдом _ 1/10 _
_6 Приятель ісини
Трішки абсурду про євреїв _1/10 _
_7 Ґотика
Трішки ґотичної прози від автора _ 2/10 _
_8 Портрет нетоти
Це типу модерна проза, тільки дуже недалекої якості (або я просто її не зрозумів) _ 0/10 _

Тут щось типу як і в попередньому варіянті. В деяких моментах я надихнувся на цікаву форму подачі матеріялу: вести історію паралельно двома мовами про різне, яке або в кінці приводить до одного, або якось пов‘язане контекстом _ 1/10 _

Збірка повістей і оповідань. Є доволі сильні частини, як "Хід генерала" з трьома ідеями, купую термінів і цікавим сюжетом чи судовий процес (чи є ідеальна копія тожньою оригіналу) (обидві - на пять). Є замудрі оповідання (про нетоту). Є "потокові" - собор, майже на пять. Але є і деякі які я зараз не можу згадати. Тому середня оцінка - 4.25

Книга нагадала серіал чорне зеркало. Десь 15 відсотків історій мені спобалися, а інші ні. Можливо навіть сказати, вони мені не сподобалися, але я їх не зрозумів.
