The Monstrous Ball #2

Drowning in Him

Rate this book
Connecting to the sea is one thing; taking a sea monster police chief as a lover is quite another.

Mara doesn’t know why she’s on the ferry to Monster Island, but she knows that a job is waiting. She goes through orientation, meets the local police chief, and is taken to her assignment and residence. She’s going to be a waitress.
Tyron has spent thousands of years waiting to find a human to act as mate. When he meets Mara, he senses that she has a lovely spirit with a longing for the water, but that’s it. Arabella identifies her as a likely candidate for Tyron, so he made sure to put her where he could find her at his restaurant.
On her day off, he gives her an invitation to the ball, but being uncharacteristically impatient, he proposes a date before the full moon.
Can a woman who can’t remember her past consider a future with a monster classified as ancient and terrible? Of course. At least she can see this monster coming. It’s purple.

Tentacles. Enough said.

Ok, maybe not…

”I am a monster, love. I play to win.”

I wish I had read the first book in this series because I think that may have helped explain this world better because I legitimately had no idea what was happening through the whole story. But tentacles. So I don’t care.

”Why are your tentacles under my blankets?

“You needed some contact. You were shivering in your sleep.”

She chuckled.

“But why are they inside me?”

“Oh, that. The tips were getting cold. You are the warmest thing I know.”

Mara is human and works on Monster Island and catches the attention of Commander Tyron. He isn’t human. In fact, he’s Poseidon’s son. Picture that. Now add more smut, mates, a transformation, and some breeding and well you got a smutty monster story.

I legitimately really liked this despite being confused and I will definitely go back and read the first in this series. The smut was slippery and the romance pretty cute.

Love

I love how this series takes a look at how we pay attention to the outside packaging of people so much. And as always with her books a unique look into a world we know a little about as myths, but that she defines in such a way that makes a fun story.

Well done on all fronts

Never would have imagined I would like a monster romance!?! The author created likeable characters set in a storyline that is believable within the world she has created. With plenty of sexy times. And kudos to the cover artist!

what a lovely tale

This story finds Mara and Tyron learning to love. She has loved before but made a poor choice in the one she loved, he has never loved before. Together they find a love the the fates intended. I love these stories of Monster Island and can’t wait for Cirro’s story.

Similar hotness/sweetness to the first :)

As is typical for Viola books, there are a few minor inconsistencies/references to things that got edited out, but these issues don't detract much from the main story.

I misspelled Viola's name in my review, but I stand by my opinion. That lady makes you want to read more of her books to see what she has done.

OK, this book made the first book make so much more sense. Basically the isle of monsters is where some people, I think descendants of Demi gods, go when they die. They have no memory of life before the island, and they have a year to make a mate connection with a monster resident. I’m still not sure what happens if they don’t mare with a monster and “return to the mainland”. Then, if they mate and stay, they have to undergo a second, somewhat metaphorical, death in order to reconcile their former selves with their new selves and become monsters.

Once you understand what’s going on, it’s some fairly interesting world building… But mostly it’s still just monster porn.

Also, there is some pretty serious dubious consent in the start of this book. Tyron pretty much just steals an egg from her on their first date, and she doesn’t even know what’s happening. He just sort of describes the process as he does it. He never says “hey can I have an egg?”, or, “by the way this mates us together forever”. Yikes! He steals her entire future away by drugging her with his aphrodisiac saliva until she doesn’t even know what’s happening. She’s just high and horny and “Oh, look! Tentacles!” Giggle.

Awwww. Awwwwww. I was applauding Viola when this was done.

I loved that it was shorter than book 1. But also as a result, I was a bit skeptical of the insta-love between Mara+Tyron, but the ending really did it for me.

I love V.M.'s thinking/writing. Yes, there was the tentacle sex and the other bit (I don't want to spoil it) but I was interested in Mara's back story and how she got there and because it was so well written and the mythology/deeper backstory made sense, I love this story.

Also the fact that Mara had a past, a past with people, with consequences, before monster island.

I am looking forward to book 3 and hopefully, even more from the series.

An enjoyable monster romance.

I enjoyed this second book in this series more than the first one. I really appreciated that the hero explained everything that was going to happen to or affect the heroine in full before it happened, and sought her fully informed consent for each step. That was a major improvement over the first novel in the series, in my opinion. The non-human anatomy and ovipositor was super fun! It is interesting that Viola Grace is inventing her own totally new monsters instead of drawing from established mythological or urban legend monsters.

Sex,

Sex almost every chapter and tentacles. Then the one truly original plot twist for unknown reason he has to remove her heart. Then she wakes up to see Persephone. Reincarnation and I have no idea why she was prompted to sink a battle ship. Lots of plot twists . it wax like the author out a lot of plot in s paper bag then drew them.I hope book three is normal vanilla sex, if any. Would love to see the monster limited to shape shifters.

We got a little more background in the how the monster world works which is nice. The book could have used a little editing as sometimes there were minor time skips and it got a little confusing. But overall I liked the characters and the story well enough

??????

I found it very disjointed and no romance. I struggled to get through it. I won't be getting the third book.

Catches your imagination!

I loved this book from the first chapter. It's a love story with a twist. It makes you realize if it is meant to be it will happen.
