Possums Are Not Cute!

Rate this book
Possums may steal your garbage…but with this book, they’ll also steal your heart!

Possums are more than the ugly-cute icons of the internet. These so-called “trash animals” and “pointy kitties” are not only relatable avatars for anxious but resilient people everywhere, but nature’s secret clean-up crew.

Organized around common myths that have given possums a bad reputation, this fun and offbeat book reveals the truth about possums through dozens of adorable photos, informative illustrations, and fascinating facts. Did you know that…

• Possums protect people and pets from disease! A single possum can eat up to 4,000 ticks per week.

• Possums excel at interspecies friendships, often sleeping in other animals’ dens.

• Because of their low body temperature, possums are practically immune to rabies.

• Possums are shy creatures: when they “play dead,” they are actually fainting from anxiety!

Written by wildlife rehabber and possum advocate Ally Burguieres, this accessible and giftable guide explains why possums deserve our admiration and offers tips on how we can protect and advocate for these magical marsupials.

I was thrilled to be approved to read and review this title on NetGalley by the publisher Quirk Books, because, you see, my mother once had a pet possum. She found him one morning in our front yard, and apparently took very good care of him as he grew to a monstrous size. Jethro, as he was soon named, loved to eat and sleep, and sadly didn't have much opportunity to do much else. Being a nocturnal beast, he spent most of his days slumbering beside our toilet. Indeed that's one of my most indelible memories of childhood - peeing beside an unconscious possum.

But, yeah . . . he was pretty cute.

The author of this fun book does a great job of dispelling myths about these gentle creatures who are more of a friend to gardeners and homeowners than a pest. Dining on such delicacies as ticks, cockroaches, and venomous snakes, possums keep your yard free of undesirables. Intelligent, despite a grape-sized brain, these critters have managed to survive and thrive for 65 million years.

I could go on and on with the facts I learned from reading this book, but it's best you check it out for yourself. Part science textbook, part picture book, you won't want to miss the plentiful photos of these cute (yes, I did say CUTE!) and cuddly beasts. This title would be a great addition to any library or school classroom.

description

Just a note: the author of this book, unlike my mother, is a trained wildlife rehabber, and while possums are cute, they prefer you admire them from a distance. Animal rescue is much better left to the pros.

BTW, this is the second book about Opossums by this author. I reviewed her first book, When in Doubt, Play Dead: Life Advice from an Unexpected Source, about six months ago here:

If you love small, furry animals that seem to be SMILING, then you'll love opossums!! But they're NOT PETS. The opossums in this book are in the temporary care of wildlife rehabbers who care for them until they're (hopefully) well enough, or old enough, to be released into the wild.

Opossum species live in the USA; Possum species live in Australia. They are not related. The biggest confusion is that the "O" is very often dropped by those referring to the American Opossum—as though it's a silent O (which it is not!). Even this book makes this mistake!🙄 (And, by the way, Aussie possums—if you can believe it—are even cuter than American opossums!)

This books includes some excellent information, including correcting the many Myths that exist about this very cute little species, such as:
🔻Possums are dirty (NO WAY! Opossums have meticulous cleaning habits, and they love to groom, just like cats!)
🔻Possums carry disease (ABSOLUTELY NOT! They actually protect us by eating TICKS - a single possum can eat 4000 per week!)
🔻Possums are Not Cute (Come on! Just look at those faces!!🥰)
If you're feeling a little low these days, this is a great book to slowly look through. I promise it'll lower your blood pressure! (And it's on sale this week on Kobo, and probably Amazon, too.)

I am a HUGE lover of Possums so when I received this book I was overjoyed! I literally stopped what I was doing and read it immediately. This is the type of book that everyone needs to read in order to really educate themselves on possums. Years ago I used to think possums were scary, ugly, and creepy animals but then I saw one in person and it was the nicest, cutest animal! It’s literally more scared of you than you are of it. This book does such a great job of debunking myths about possums. The author goes over several well known myths and gives the reader the facts about how the myths aren’t true. For example, the title. Possums not being cute is the BIGGEST myth and by reading this book you will truly be shown that. This book is filled with SO many adorable photos of possums that will literally melt your heart.

The book starts by going over their different body parts and how they make them special. Did you know they have 50 teeth? I had no idea! Then like I mentioned the book goes into the different myths that so many people believe to be true. Honestly, I used to be one of those people until I educated myself on them. Sadly, that was only until after I thought they were cute. The book ends by giving several helpful tips for how we can be champions for these cute animals. For starters, you can definitely check out this book!

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to younger children as well as adults. I think it is a great way to learn more about possums. It’s well written, organized well, easy to follow, and is filled with high quality cute possum photos. If you do not like possums then definitely read this book because I really believe it will change your mind.

*Thank you @quirkbooks for sending me a #gifted copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own* #partner

I am an animal lover and I especially have a heart for the outcasts. My ferrets can vouch for me here. I didn’t need a book to convince me that possums are cute, but I sure didn’t mind seeing all of their adorable photos while learning more about them.

There really wasn’t anything I did not love about Possums Are Not Cute. It’s packed full of precious full color photos and educational information presented in a fun, easy to digest manner. I knew some things about possums (opossums) already, but I learned so much more from this book.

I do believe, upon reading more about their introversion and misunderstood nature, that possums are my spirit animal. I have, in fact, never related to any animal more in my life. Don’t tell my ferrets.

I know I’ll need to get myself a finished copy of this when it comes out!

I am immensely grateful to Quirk Books for my digital review copy through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Possums Are Not Cute will be out in May 2022!

This wonderfully illustrated, fun, and surprisingly educational book celebrates all things opossum. Burguieres, a licensed wildlife rehabber who works with North America’s only marsupial, realized early on that ‘possums need some PR. For decades, most ‘possum content centered on “Beverly Hillbillies”-style gags about cooking them.

As it turns out, opossums are remarkably helpful to humans, even if we haven’t always returned the favor. They eat incredible numbers of ticks. Also on the menu are venomous snakes and scorpions—‘possums are immune to their bites! Because of their low body temperature, they are far less likely than many other animals to contract rabies. When threatened, those frenzied displays they put on are basically all for show—making scary sounds is their best defense against predators. And “playing ‘possum” is actually an involuntary response to stress, much like that of “fainting” goats.

Most of the ‘possums who come to the author for rehabilitation can be treated and re-released when they are healthy, but others have issues such as injury or early imprinting upon humans that make them bad candidates for survival in the wild. These animals become “’possum ambassadors.” Her popular social media accounts give people space to see a different side of ‘possums and begin to appreciate them.

While this book is filled with pictures of ‘possums doing cute things, the author cautions over and over again that they are not pets. They need specialized vet and dietary care that most laypeople can’t provide—in fact, some of her ‘possum “ambassadors” were former pets whose inadequate diets resulted in permanent health problems.

As anyone who lives in the rural US knows, opossums have for many years had few friends and many abusers. They are shot, trapped, and intentionally hit by drivers. But things are also changing for ‘possums. Driven largely by the Internet’s embrace of their unique attributes, younger people in particular have begun celebrating ‘possums as weird in a good way--and of course cute—showing that we may finally be moving away from the casual cruelty previous generations thoughtlessly inflicted upon them.

Burguieres concludes with tips on how to help ‘possums. She encourages readers to speak up for the marsupials and teach others about the important role they play in the ecosystem. Above all, she reminds readers to appreciate ‘possums from a distance and allow them to do their jobs in nature. They’re wild, weird, and wonderful.

Ok, I admit, my heart went SQUEE SO MANY TIMES from the pictures in this book, I lost count! Possums are SOOOOO CUUUUUTE!!!

As well as giving my heart exercise, this book also informed me of, yet again, how amazingly weird nature is. Mother Nature either has a REALLY warped sense of humor, or she is high. Like all of the time. Because possums are STRANGE little critters.

BUT they are also AWESOME. They are my heroes, because they eat TICKS. Like LOTS of them. Ticks are the dirty needle of the insect world and now with ticks carrying a diseases that MAKES YOU ALLERGIC TO EATING MEAT, we need ticks gone, like yesterday.

Possums also eat other nasty, disgusting, disease carrying things, as well as snakes and scorpions that are dangerous to humans, so I am Team Possum all the way.

There are a lot of negative myths out there about possums that this book does it's best to dispel, as well as stresses that POSSUMS ARE WILD ANIMALS, NOT PETS. Since possums have such strange diets and specific needs, if there is an injured possum that you find, wildlife rescue needs to be called.

The biggest thing I picked up from this book is that possums are are friends and we want them in our lives, though not up close, just like any other wild animal.

I highly recommend this book, especially if you live in an area that has possums. The pictures ALONE make this book amazing. The information in it is priceless as well.

5, possums ARE cute, stars!

This was cute and informative. I have always thought possums were adorable so I couldn’t resist picking up this book. This was very informative about what is true about possums and which is a myth. I highly recommend this book if you like possums or have kids that are interested in these adorable trash cats.

Also, all the possum pictures in this were absolutely adorable!

This is the perfect blend of informative and freaking adorable! Perfect for anyone who loves possums, loves cute animals, or is interested in wildlife and/or learning about wild animals. Possums Are Not Cute! covers myths that we've all heard, like "possums carry diseases" or "possums are aggressive," and sets the record straight. This is a super swift, short read that would make for a great gift or a coffee table book. Absolutely recommend if you think you even might be slightly interested!

I want to firstly say thank you to Quirk books for always allowing me the opportunity to review some amazingly interesting books. Possums Are Not Cute! And Other Myths about Nature's Most Misunderstood Critter was such a fun and informative read about an animal that I didn't know much about.

Let's take a moment to talk about my indifference when it comes to possums. I have never met a possum in real life. I have seen them unfortunately deceased on the side of roads. All myths/truths about possums have come from word of mouth and not from an expert. It was nice to finally get some truth about this "scary" creature.

I loved how the book started off with a little bit of history between Ally Burguieres and the possum. Growing up she had a vague idea of what possums were and they harmful myths that surround them. Decades later she had a chance to rehab a baby possum. She went from being extremely wary to falling in love. This book is a love letter to the United States only native marsupial. It is also a informational guide to how and why we should protect these adorable creatures.

Fun facts that I learned while reading this book.
1. Opossum and possum are not the same thing. Opossum is what we have here in the North and South Americas. Possums are found mostly in Australia. They are distant cousins, but are not the same.
2. Opossum's have ape like feet with opposable thumbs. Good for climbing and eating a million deadly ticks.
3. Opossum's have human like hands with actual fingerprints!
4. Opossums CAN NOT hang upside down like cartoons suggest. Their tails can not hold their weight and they could actually injure their spine if they tried.
5. Each Opossum ear starts off white as a baby and as they grow the ear's color changes to brown in distinct patterns. You can tell Opossums apart just by their patterns.
6. Several presidents owned Opossums as pets.
7. Opossums are immune to snake and scorpion venom so they help keep deadly critters at bay.
8. When opossums "play dead", they have actually fainted from fright to the point they take on a dead like appearance. Their heart rates go way down and they give off an off putting odor to mimic decomposition. This coma like sleep can wear off in a few mins to up to four hours.
9. Opossums groom themselves as much if not more than cats.
10. Opossums are nature's introverts. They are typically very shy and timid creatures, but they can be very affectionate toward their own kind and other animal species.

What can we do to help these amazing animals? Leave them alone. They are doing a great job for our ecosystem. They clean up the wild by eating dangerous critters and trash. They are still wild life so leave them be. If you see an injured Opossum call your local wildlife rescue for advice.

This was such a cute, informative book. Thanks again to Quirk for sharing this book with me. This book came out back in May, I'm late to the party, school has taken over my life. That just means that all of you can get your hands on it now.

Opossums are not cute. That's right. THEY ARE FREAKIN ADORABLE. THE MOST IMPORTANT ANIMAL IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD. I love opossums. I'm a wildlife rehabber and they are my absolute favorite animal to help. But before starting my rehab work I had never even seen an opossum. The moment I saw my first baby opossum, I decided that they were the cutest animal on the face of the planet and I would do anything I could to make sure the world knew how important they are to our planet. Ally knows. This book is exactly what the world needs. Short and sweet, filled with all the facts and a healthy dose of those adorable faces, Possums are Not Cute is perfect. I am so incredibly grateful that this book has been published and I'm honored to have read it early. I want to put this book in every library in America!

There are 2 things wrong with the title of this book - (i) they are actually talking about opossums (ii) they are cute. But, this is an insightful read into the world of these oft-maligned and massively misunderstood creatures. They aren't the ferocious hissing beasts that they appear, rather nervous shy creatures that tend to react badly in unexpected social situations (same).
These pointy kitties (c Ralph Wiggum) are a valuable part of the North American ecosystem, feasting on poisonous snakes and other terrible things. They are also undeniably, weirdly cute. My favourite fact about them is that when they play dead (aka playing possum) they emit a foul stench that makes them smell like they are decomposing. Enviable life skills.
I used to think my spirit animal was the sloth, now I'm considering switching to the possum.

Virginia opossums are one of the animals that are still vilified and misunderstood in North America. They are rabies carriers, they are trash cats, they are stupid and sluggish as well as ugly carriers of all kinds of parasites. But have you ever looked at an opossum before, really looked it in its beady little eyes?

Ally Burguieres explores the world of the opossums that she helps to rehab and as such peels back these stories that we all hear about. She explores the physical attributes, its behavior and just how much these singular marsupials of North America really could do with a makeover that celebrates their uniqueness for all that is worth. And at the same time reminds readers that opossums need to grow wild since lack of educated care means a world of bad health problems for captive opossums.

And to assist the reader to get the message across there are bunches of brightly colored photographs including various members of captive possums who have been saved from bad lives to become ambassadors for all possum-kind.

I would most definitely recommend this book for all ages whether they are possum fans or not, especially for those who may work out in their yards. And slowly as as a result we may eventually convert outdated beliefs and bring forth new fans of this amazing creature.

I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I am familiar with Ally Burguieres from social media and was thrilled to see she had written a book. I’ve always loved  opossums but still learned new things about these magnificent marsupials while reading this book. The pictures were delightful and  enjoyed the ‘Possums Throughout History’ asides. Burguieres knows opossums and it shows! Not only does she dispel the negative untruths that have always surrounded North America’s only marsupial, she demonstrates the role licensed wildlife rehabilitators play in the lives of possums and takes every chance she gets to remind readers the best place for a possum is the wild.

The Virginia or opossum is the only marsupial native to North America and is now found over much of the continent. Apparently they’re considered something of a pest. Personally, I’d love to see one outside my house...

This little book is packed full of adorable photographs and interesting facts about this endearing creature. Recommended.

“You’d think the potential of leaving prints might discourage possums from committing crimes. unfortunately, possums don’t care about consequences or getting caught.”

I just love Possums. Never saw one in the wild (don’t have them here), but I have seen them at zoos and on adorable photographs on the internet and in books, so I just had to pick up this book.

In this book we find out all about the darling Possum. From where they are from and how they travelled over the world to the story of Sesame the one who started the author’s interest in possums and her dedication to protect them/make sure the world knows about possums. We read about how good they are for the environment (eating all the stuff). We read how the love to scream and play dead (though the play dead part apparently is more anxiety than acting like I thought it was XD). There is also plenty on the history of these animals. We learn all about every part of the possums anatomy from top to bottom (I learned that their ears start colourless and then turn to black/dark with age). Plus, myths get busted so hard!
This book is packed with all sorts of information on the possum and it was just all very interesting to read. I looked forward to each new page. I learned a whole bunch of new things and it made me very happy!

I love how each section is like Possums are NOT insert something but then contradicts that as soon as the next page. XD Just like the title.

And of course there is a big message, yes, possums are adorable… but you should just leave them in the wild. Don’t get them as a pet. Love that we get some tips and advice on how to protect and champion them. I really enjoyed reading those, though of course, none are applicable to me as we don’t have them here in the wild and I am sure the zoo ones don’t need help. XD

I also cannot forget the ADORABLE FREAKING ADORABLE OMG OMG SOOO CUTE photographs!!! cough Sorry, inner fangirl got out for a bit. The photographs are just the best and I loved it when they popped up (along with a fun caption). Oh, and I cannot forget the illustrations. There aren’t many, but the ones we see, I just love the style and how cute it all is (well, OK except that one with the paws, that just was a bit no for me).

All in all, HIGHLY recommended, this book was just a joy to read. Motivational, fun, cute, interesting, well-written. If you love possums and want to know more about them, be sure to check out this book!

A huge thank you to Quirk Books and Ally Burguieres for allowing me to get an early copy of Possums Are NOT Cute! What follows is my honest review.

I was so excited when Quirk Books reached out to me about this book. Growing up in rural Kansas where there is always the risk of running into an opossum in the woodpile at my grandparents' place, or in the barn. This fact is important because I have heard a hundred times a lot of the misconceptions and myths surrounding opossums because of this. None of which have stopped me from thinking them adorable and wanting one as a pet. So I was all about getting my hands on this book.

The first thing I did when I got my copy was to flip through and look at the photos that were included of the possum ambassadors. I just love their weird little face so much. So I'm so very excited that there was page after page of adorable photos. Some of which I follow on Instagram because who doesn't love adorable animals popping up on their feeds.

But, the book itself is also really good. Ally Burguieres has not only filled this book with adorable possum photos and fun facts but also teaches about the lives of these adorable little creatures. So not only was it a fun read, but it was educational as well. Not just teaching about these little critters, but also how they affect the world around us. Teaching us why they are so important.

Never once did this book get boring though. Burguieres didn't just fill the pages with cold facts about possums and assume people would love them. Instead, she told a story about her journey into the world of possums and laid out the facts in a fun way. This book is written in a narrative that feels like you are being spoken to as a person, not just lectured out. This is something I really appreciated because sometimes nonfiction books, especially about animals and anatomy, can become dry.

One of the things I think that helped break up the facts is the fun little section about possums in history. It was a fun look at the random sort of celebrity roles possums have had throughout our history. An odd history at that. But, a fun way to break up the not-so-fun parts. I also think the fact that each section was kept so short, only a page or two, kept this book from feeling dry and boring. Also, being told in an easy way to understand, explaining things that got a little science-heavy with terms. You felt how much Burguieres wanted the readers to learn about these creatures, so she took the time to explain in a way everyone good understands.

Possums Are NOT Cute! is a hundred percent adorable and perfect for both possum lovers and animal lovers in general. It's a fun coffee table book that can spark conversation, and my copy now lives about the fireplace. The whole house has read it and loved it!

I love animals and I am always ready to learn more about species I know little-to-nothing about. I know of Opposums, but honestly don't know a lot about them.

Possums Are NOT Cute is a fantastic book filled with fun facts, cute pictures, and their place in history. I had no idea that Presidents of old had them as pets in the Whitehouse. Nor did I know that people eat them...😳

I have to say there is plenty in this book I didn't know and it was a joy to read. This would be a fantastic research project for Middle Graders to showcase the myths vs. truths of the Opposums.

I absolutely ADORED the pics showing these cute furries in all sorts of ways. They are certainly adorable and I have to admit I never thought that before reading this.

I highly recommend this for animal lovers and for those who think they know all there is to know about Opossums. This is one I'll be sharing with my grandbabies. I think they would get a kick out them.

I sincerely appreciate Quirk Books for providing me with a review copy. All opinions expressed herein are mine and mine alone.

This book is great for all ages, but especially tween, teens, and adults. You get the scientific factoids of possums but also their historical relevance from prehistoric days to our modern era. Plus, cuteness overload as well with so many adorable pics of rehabbed possums—NOT PETS (except for a few presidential exceptions)! The main takeaway is that they’re helpful and remarkable creatures who offer free pest and bug control! Sure they sometimes use old leaves and grasses in our yards to make a bed with their super useful tails, but they aren’t out to cause trouble. In general, they are shy creatures who just want to co-exist and enjoy their pretty short lifespan. This book makes a great gift for any animal lover or #STEM or #STEAM student. If you care about the environment, you must also care about possums! 5 stars!

Ally Burguieres got involved with wildlife rehabilitation (specifically helping opossums survive illness, injury, and loss) and never looked back! She discovered that many of the ideas people held about opossums were misconceptions – they were not ugly, dirty, or aggressive. In fact, they were adorable, clean, shy, and remarkably intelligent. While they are not good candidates for pets (they are nocturnal and get into EVERYTHING), opossums that can’t be released back into the wild can be ambassadors for their species – educating people about what they’re really like. Learn more about opossums and their relatives in this ‘possum primer. You’ll find yourself developing a passion for them as well! An excellent, insightful, and informative look at possums.

Possums Are SOOOO Cute!
Look, was I ever a possum naysayer? a possum hater? a strong believer that possum were lil uggos?! Absolutely not. So I may not be the target audience for this little gem of a book, but hey who doesn't want to surround themselves in page after page of adorableness and facts?! There are so many cute photos in this book I thought my eyes were going to turn into literal heart eye emojis, and I loved all the random possum facts peppered throughout the book as well. This is an adorable, informative little book about possums, full of myths vs. facts. They’re so cute!

It’s a great gift book full of sweet photos and fun facts, like they eat lots of ticks. They also eat venomous snakes, cockroaches, and scorpions. Go possums! Both adults and kids could enjoy learning about these sometimes misunderstood marsupials. It comes out May 10. Thank you to Quirk Books and NetGalley for my copy.

I just finished this great little book sitting on my porch at 4am while Dorian (Gray) wandered through the backyard looking for treats. Then Noir showed up - a big nearly all black opossum. I put out fruit and veggies for them especially in the cooler months. They eat the zucchini right off the plants but it is a small price to pay for NO snails in my Southern CA garden.

I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This was such a fun read! I always thought Possums were ugly but how wrong I was. I highly recommend this for all the young readers in your life.

Its true, they aren't "cute" - they are adorable, fascinating friends who play such an important role! This book was really cute and packed full of interesting information, some of which I had never heard of before.
