Lady Elise Henderson lives two separate lives. At home in Scotland, she’s the titled daughter of the Marquess of Roxbury, an heiress in her own right. In London, however, she’s Elise Taylor, a top MI6 operative for the “home office.” But when a devastating accident threatens to end her career, Elise is left with far too much time for self-reflection and the regret of a decision made long ago that features one man: fellow MI6 agent Harry Benson.
Harry Benson, the son of servants, has loved Elise for the better part of a decade. But life took them on separate journeys until their worlds converged once more. An immediate assignment to the Scottish Borders leaves Harry little time to make provisions for his small, rambunctious son, Sammy. Harry knows only one person he can rely on for the boy’s care—Elise. When Elise brings Sammy to her ancestral estate, she never imagines that a nemesis from her past looms in the shadows, hungry for revenge. Stalked at every turn, Elise and Harry discover that fighting their feelings for one another is futile, but can they survive long enough to get another shot at true love?

The anticipation when Paige Edwards announces a new book is intense! I am a huge fan of her writing and characters so I love when I can finally get my hands on her book and read it. I always come away very satisfied with the whole book. Facing the Enemy is such a fantastic book! I loved the instant edge of your seat suspense. Nothing was held back in this one.
I was completely invested in these characters. They've been background characters in a previous series but start the author's new series, Heirs of Roxbury, out with a bang. If you haven't read her previous books, no worries, this is written in such a way that you'll be able to follow along. A few of the characters from her previous books have some cameos but she gives you the info you need to know about them that doesn't detract from this book's story.
Lady Elise and Harry are MI6 agents. They've known each other for years and have a bit of a history together. They've been brought back together but not for a case. Elise is still healing from an injury and Harry is heading out into the field. They end up realizing they're heading the same direction and can help each other out. Harry has a young son he needs help with some childcare for and Elise seems to be the perfect person. She'll take him to her family estate and have some servants help out. Easy Peasy. Hahaha! Oh Sammy! He is a precocious little one who keeps everyone on their toes. He had me laughing, cringing, shaking my head, smiling and much more throughout the book. Such a fun addition to this story. And exactly what Elise needs in her life.
There's danger lurking around every corner here and Harry and Elise need to keep their heads so they can stay one step ahead. But of course it doesn't quite happen that way. This story had a lot of fun cat and mouse moments that kept me turning the pages quickly. And the suspense. Seriously, I was holding my breath several times. I had to remind myself to breath. Haha! My heart was definitely pounding. And I kept making guesses as to how it would all work out. Some I guessed and others were great surprises.
To balance out the suspense, Mrs. Edwards does a great job of adding in humor, witty banter (especially between our two main characters), and lots of great chemistry. Sweet and Swoony romance at its finest between these two.
Get ready to be swept away to the wilds of Scotland for a grand adventure. And be warned...you'll want to visit there after reading this book. I feel that way after every book I've read by this author.
Content: Clean. There is plenty of suspense and peril throughout the book but the author wrote it in such a way that I felt was clean and not overly graphic. There is nothing further than kisses. No explicit scenes or content. Language was clean as well.
I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
I have not read this author before and found that I enjoyed her writing style. The action in the book was well written and fast moving. The characters were well fleshed out and relatable. I do not enjoy books with "spunky" mischievous children and this one had Sammy who was always running off and getting into things. The book started off with a bang and then slowed a bit as a romance was rekindled between the main characters. I felt as if there was a book before this one as the bad guy's misdeeds and motivations were not well defined. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher through Netgalley. All views expressed are my honest opinion of this book.
Wow. This contemporary romantic suspense is the story of two MI6 agents who dated once upon a time. Now Harry is on assignment near Elise's family estate in Scotland where she is healing from an injury and wow, the sparks are flying! I am a huge fan of Paige's books and this book is a perfect example of why. It's got
Real, relatable characters On the edge of your seat suspense (like seriously, my heart was pounding) Super swoony romance with lots of chemistry
Paige lets the bread crumbs fall at the perfect pace to keep you guessing and wondering but also satisfied. Loved every scene between Harry and Elise. Watching two top international spies flirt with each other was immensely entertaining!
Though there are cameos and references to characters from her other series, this is the first book in a new series and the perfect time to try Paige's books if you haven't already. This is a five star read and lived up to every one of my expectations. I will read anything and everything that Paige writes!
I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.

"The story has so many twists and turns, the writing was well done and detailed in all things espionage. The characters were interesting and credible, as they dealt with the problems that arose. I enjoyed the sweet romance between the main characters, it was fun and flirty. "
4.5/5 Another great book by Paige Edwards. I’m definitely excited to see what’s in store with this series and am already hoping to see characters from this book in future ones. I was hoping to get a book about Agents Taylor and Benson from reading about them and their past in Paige’s Pressley-Coombs series, and this delivered that and more. I really enjoyed the suspense in this book, especially towards the end; it kept me engaged in the story and unable to put it down. The chemistry between Elise and Harry was good, although I wish there could’ve been a few more romantic moments between them. And sweet, mischievous Sammy was a delight and breath of fresh air, he kept the story light despite some moments of high tension. The familial relationships in this book were a great addition to the overall story (fingers crossed for books about Elise’s siblings). The character growth was good, but I did struggle a little bit with how Elise’s medical problems were resolved/handled so quickly. The small things that I didn’t completely love did not take away from my overall feelings about this book. Paige Edwards beautifully describes the wonder of Scotland and helps you dive right into the setting. She is able to put you in the middle of it all and take you along for a wonderful ride inside the pages of her books. I would gladly reread this story and look forward with great anticipation to the next book in this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. All thoughts in my review are my own.
If you want romantic suspense, Facing the Enemy is just the ticket for you! Edwards immediately plunges you into Elise and Harry’s world. From the beginning, the action takes off and it keeps a steady pace throughout the book. I loved seeing characters from her previous books, that was a definite bonus for me. The interactions between Elise and Harry were delightful. There was an internal struggle going on with Elise and I think a lot of women can sympathize and relate to that. The suspense kept me on edge throughout the book and I found myself begging my body to stay up to read just a little bit more. Full of romance, suspense, action, and love, Facing the Enemy hits all of the marks of a great novel! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
4.5 stars Wow! This book was really good. I have been so looking forward to this book and it didn’t not disappoint! Facing the Enemy is the first book in Paige Edwards’ new series, Roxbury Heirs. Edwards weaves such a fascinating tale with engaging characters. This was just a wonderful book. I really liked the characters in this book. I didn’t always agree with them, but I felt as if I got to know them. Both Elise and Harry were struggling with different things and learning how to move on with life; they felt real. I have to admit that there were times where Elise got on my nerves, but as I read more about her I grew to like her. She was going through a lot and she was trying to work through the waves of life. Elise was a strong woman and I liked how she pushed herself. She was stubborn and opinionated but she cared for her family and for Harry. I liked how Harry was able to see past Elise’s walls and truly get to know her. Elise will have to learn that being an agent isn’t everything and how to let herself enjoy life. Harry was also interesting. I liked that although he was dedicated to his job, he was still a good father. He cared about Sammy and he was truly trying his best. But he was struggling to balance his job and care for his son. I really liked Harry. He was kind and full of life, but he could also be serious. It was sweet to read about him interacting with Elise and trying to encourage her. Harry will have to figure out how to find that fine line between work and family. Harry and Elise were a sweet couple. They had known each other before and it was cute to read about them connecting and falling in love. I liked their chemistry and easy batner, they truly did understand each other. The plot was so engaging and I was on the edge of my seat. I needed to know what was going to happen and how it was going to end. I really enjoy the suspense, I felt as if it was perfect. It wasn’t too scary but I still wanted to read more. Sammy, Harry’s son, was also a lot of fun. I loved his mischievous nature, but also how sweet he was. He really added to the story. Facing the Enemy is definitely a book you should read especially if you enjoyed Edwards' other books. This was a sweet second chance romance with lovable characters and thrilling plot! I did not want to put it down.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher through Netgalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, a positive review was not required.
Bravo, Ms. Edwards! This first book in the Roxbury Heirs sets the bar quite high for the rest of the series. It is fast paced, action packed, and pulse racing from the first to the last page. Harry Benson has his hands full. Not only is there an evil maniac after his former love interest, MI6 agent Elise Taylor, but there are also stolen arms being shipped overseas that he must stop.
Elise Taylor has what it takes to be an MI6 operative: guts, determination, cunning intelligence, and a passion to see justice served. I admired her because she never quit, even when she was injured and had to flee with Harry’s rascally son into the woods of Scotland. Having Elise and Harry team up had me turning pages and sitting on the edge of my seat.
The special weapon that Harry got to use reminded me of the gadgets that James Bond has in his arsenal when he went on missions. There was such a great scene that had me cheering as Harry uses everything he has to fight against evil. ( No spoilers, but I will say that you will love reading it.)
I highly recommend this book if you like clean romantic suspense. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant Communications for providing the digital ARC. A positive review was not required.
"Facing the Enemy" is a romantic suspense. Elise has been more interested in making a difference through her job than in marriage and children. Repeated injuries mean she'll no longer be able to do the job or have children. She's attracted to Harry, who admires her abilities and confidence, but he has one son already and surely will want more. Besides, would she even be a good mother? When Harry asks her to care for his son while he's working undercover nearby, his child gets into all sorts of trouble. It gets even worse when a bad guy comes after her to take revenge.
First, the son was eight years old, which is old enough that he ought to have understood the reality of "danger" and have some idea about what could get him hurt. But he didn't, and it was more than just a boy being adventurous. Near the end, he even left hiding to wander off after Elise warned him about the danger and the need to hide until she came back. But he got bored after a few minutes. He also didn't seem to understand that the bad guys weren't playing a game. I couldn't decide if the author was pushing his behavior to create suspenseful situations or if he had metal issues that Harry simply didn't acknowledge.
Anyway, Harry had a mystery to solve, and they all got into plenty of dangerous situations. Harry's and Elise's feelings for each other grew as they worked together. Elise had some character growth in addition to just trying to survive. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable suspense novel.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
Facing the Enemy Roxbury Heirs #1 By Paige Edwards
Years ago, Elise Henderson broke up with Harry Benson when her parents objected to him. No one expected the two of them to be partnered by MI6, but two years ago, Elise's life changed when an enemy attacked and she was left with a shattered body. With mere weeks left to fully regain what she has lost, Elise receives devastating news that has her returning to her childhood home. But she's not returning alone.
Harry never expected to have a second chance to win Elise's heart, but his newest assignment with MI6 leaves him in need of a childminder for his young son. Elise offers a temporary solution by offering her father's household staff until something more permanent can be arranged. But Sammy proves more than the staff can handle, forcing Elise to take a very active role in Sammy's life. As Sammy works his way into her life and her heart, Elise knows she will be heartbroken when she has to say goodbye to both Sammy and Harry.
The enemy that destroyed her life has been searching for Elise, and he won't be satisfied until he breaks her further and then takes his revenge.
Facing the Enemy is a contemporary piece of romance and suspense that will find you rooting for Elise and Harry while at the same time breaking your own heart over Elise's secret pain. As danger moves closer, you will be drawn further into the book, unable to put it down.
This is the first book in the Roxbury Heirs series, and Paige Edwards does a masterful job of creating a world that I can't wait to visit again. The characters are engaging and, for the most part, likable. But the enemy, that was, in the past, someone of power and influence, is truly an evil man who can give one the shivers when he takes center stage. If you are looking for a new and exciting read this is the book you want to move to your TBR list. You won't be sorry and you will want to reread it again.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
4.5 I really enjoyed Facing the Enemy by author Paige Edwards. This is a wonderful contemporary romantic suspense, second-chance story set in England and Scotland.
Elise Taylor, a top MI6 operative, is recovering from major surgery after an intentional car accident that claimed the life of her partner. Elise's injury has the potential to derail her life as a M16 operative. She leads two separate lives. In Scotland, she’s Lady Elise Henderson, the titled daughter of the Marquess of Roxbury. Harry Benson, her college love, is now also with M16 and their paths cross again. I love the spy details, the escapes, the covers blown, it's like watching a Mission Impossible movie! Harry's exuberant son Sammy is a handful but a lovable part of the story. Then there's a crazy man escaped from prison put there by Elise and her former partner, who's out to get Elise. Can she in her injured state escape this nutcase with millions at his disposal? You'll have to read it to find out.
Some great lines in the story: "Did the media get it right?" Elise asked. "Not even a little." "Would the media ever report the complete truth in the crises waging across the globe?"
"When I take that kiss, you won't need to bribe me."
"His pulse raced, and he couldn't keep the stupid grin off his face. This eighty-second flight blew every single one of his boyhood fantasies to smithereens. Take that, Stan Lee!"
"She had wanted more from life than to nibble on cucumber sandwiches and sip tea in party dresses. She wanted to matter-to make a difference."
"I can reel with the best of them, my wild Scottish thistle. In fact, I doubt you could keep up with me."
"If civilians were given patriotic medals, Mother would be first in line."
"St Michael himself, with a legion of angels at his disposal, couldn't keep the pair of them out of trouble."
"In case you haven't noticed, natural charm is not my strong suit."
I highly recommend Facing the Enemy for fans of contemporary-romance, christian, adult-contemporary, high-society, romantic-suspense, scottish-aristocracy, second-chance-romance, suspense, sweet, wholesome stories!
Thank you to the author and net galley for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.
This book was one I didn’t want to stop reading. It was so well-written. And I just got sucked in. Plus I didn’t want to leave the characters in peril any longer than I had to.
I loved Elise. She has some hard news at the beginning of the book. And that really effects her through the whole thing. It’s something she constantly thought about. There was a certain part of the book where she decided that she would be okay with whatever was in store for her. And I loved that. We all need to figure out that we are going to be okay, even though things aren’t ever going to be perfect.
Harry is the kind of guy who wants to do whatever he can for his country. That is such a great thing. But he also has a little boy who needs a normal family life. I loved reading the parts with him and Sammy. He really was a great dad. I loved the way he cared for Elise, even when she didn’t want him to.
Sammy was so funny! I loved watching Elise trying to figure out what to do with him. And her family saying how like her he was.
The plot of this one is intense. It kept me interested and wondering just what was going to happen next. I loved this book! And I can’t wait for more.
When I started reading the book, I was under the impression that this was a historical suspense romance novel. I was really thrown for a loop when on chapter two, I realized that it was actually contemporary. The cover gave me a different impression for the genre.
But overall, I think the interactions between Elise and Harry were sweet, especially when you add in the cute scenes with little Sammy. I think I would have liked to see the romance they had before he got married to someone else, as that gave me a discomforting stomach ache for him to have chosen someone else after her.
The writing style was beautiful and the story flowed well. Elise was a refreshing, always focused and no-nonsense character. She and Harry made a great pair.
Action, suspense, romance, and a darling, mischievous eight year old combine to produce one enjoyable, rollercoaster ride of a story. Paige Edwards is so good at writing a convincing sweet romance with a James Bond like MI6 plot. From the first page, I was hooked and had a hard time putting it down. There’s also a subtle element of faith woven into the story.
Harry, the handsome, strong, talented MI6 agent is on a mission. Someone has been illegally sending British arms to supply a war in a foreign country. He’s been sent to the Scottish Highlands to infiltrate a military base to discover the traitors. His assignment brings him once again into contact with the one woman he’s loved since college. Her wealthy family’s objection to him years ago lead him on a different path that resulted in a sweet but precocious eight year old son Sammy and divorce. When his parents no longer can care for his son, he asks the one woman he thought would never say yes to mind him for him.
Elise is the daughter of wealthy aristocrats, but she’s also a take no prisoners, tough as nails MI6 agent. A horrible accident which killed her partner left her injured with the possibility of permanent injury and the loss of her job. Seeing Harry again awakens her love for him that has never quite gone away, but with her job and health in jeopardy, she doesn’t think she can commit to marriage or family. She does agree to mind his son at her family’s Scottish estate. After all, can’t the servants look after him? How much trouble could a little boy be? However, when the man who killed her partner comes after her with a vengeance, will she be able to protect those she’s come to care about most?
Loved this action packed romantic suspense! Harry and Elise’s chemistry was amazing. They had those Mr. and Mrs. Smith moments where you weren’t sure if they were going to attack each other or kiss each other. (Just to keep each other on their toes.) Sammy was a sweet little boy who as most moms of boys know just can’t help but get into trouble at that age. He often slips away from his minders and Elise is usually the one to have to track him down. The villain is absolutely evil and has not just one but several evil schemes up his sleeve. When he discovers Elise’s whereabouts, it’s a cat and mouse chase through the Scottish wilderness.
Highly recommend! Those who enjoy clean romantic suspense, Christian romance, or Christian suspense/mystery will definitely enjoy this novel. While this novel builds on the author’s previous books, it definitely can be read as a standalone. Looking forward to more books in the series! I received an advanced copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.
Content: some violence, only passionate kissing, infertility issues, talk of murder and death.
3.5 stars "To face a man with unlimited resources, all she had was two knives, her Glock 17, a partial magazine of ammo, and her bow and arrows."
Following an horrific accident, M16 operative Elise Taylor returns home for additional rehabilitation, meaning Lady Elise Henderson is being temporarily reinserted back into her former life as the titled daughter of the Marquess of Roxbury. Shattered bones take time to heal. After receiving the disappointing, but not surprising directive from her superiors, Elise happens to cross paths with her former partner, Henry Benson, who has been granted a short break between assignments. Due to a sudden downturn in his father's health, Henry is tasked with finding a childminder for his mischievous young son. For Elise, being around Henry is always bittersweet; he is the one man who once stirred her heart towards "happily ever after". But Sammy? Perhaps the young chap has met his match!
One doesn't serve their country as an elite undercover agent without making enemies, so naturally when Elise's past and Henry's present collide, they are called upon to exert every bit of courage and training they possess to . . . . "face the enemy". Then, and only then, will they be free to circle back around to the ending of their own story? It's worth every word.
What an interesting book! Very romantic, very suspenseful, . . . charging ahead with a great beginning, coming to a screeching halt with a great ending, sporting lots of time in between to make it all happen. . . especially when there's a little boy who believes that God answers his every prayer, even while he is turning an entire castle upside down in the process.
This is my first time reading book by Paige Edwards and I wasn’t disappointed. I admit that the cover of this book immediately drew me in and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. But this book has it all — romance, suspense, intrigue and relatable characters dealing with real life issues.
Lady Elise is such a strong, kick-butt heroine. I love how she straddles the line of capable M16 agent and proper debutante. She’s both fierce and feminine. I really felt for her and the results of her accident broke my heart. I loved her with Harry, but it was her protectiveness and care of Sammy that really made me love her character. Her recovery also forces her to really connect with her family and take responsibility for her past actions.
Harry’s determination to win back Elise and care for his son was admirable. His new assignment really forces him to evaluate what is most important in life — family. Both he and Elise realize the mistakes they made in the past and want to overcome them, but it’s really Harry’s persistent efforts that make these two work as a couple.
Edwards did a really good job of balancing a suspenseful story with real life issues. I loved the POV of our villain. It really built up the suspense and tension. He was truly diabolical, but delusional; you really didn’t know what he was going to do next. The build up really made for a fast paced and exciting ending.
Possible spoilers ahead:
I only gave this four stars because I wanted to see Elise and Harry falling in love. They’re already in love with each because of a relationship they had a long time ago and we’re really only told this. I would have loved some flashbacks to their past relationship — how and why they fell in love with each other and what happened when things fell apart.
4.5 stars! I loved it! It was just what I needed. I usually read the description of books before I read them, but I trusted the author and forgot that step. What a fun surprise! I was expecting from the cover some type of historical fiction, but instead it was a modern day suspense set in Scotland. Elise and Harry were once in a relationship, but broke up when Lady Elise’s family disapproved of her choice. Years later they served as MI6 partners and had to lean to keep their feelings buried. When Elise’s world is turned upside down, due to an injury and dismal prognosis, she returns home to recover and train. When Harry is sent to the same area on assignment and needs someone to watch his son, Elise offers the use of her family’s staff. As the relationship rekindles, Elise must face her fears of the future and the possibility of a relationship with Harry. Life is thrown for a loop when a bitter criminal seeks revenge on Elise for her part in his arrest.
I liked the timeline the author used to forge a meaningful and believable relationship. There’s lots of swoony sweet moments any romance reader will love. Such a delightful read!
I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys clean romance suspense. Content warning: infertility
Facing the Enemy was an easy book for me to select. It's a romantic suspense novel, written by one of the authors who contributed to Heirs of Falcon Point, another novel I enjoyed recently. I confess I wasn't sure whether this was going to be historic or contemporary (neither the front cover or back cover of my ARC copy seemed to make that clear), but I can now confirm that this is a contemporary novel (just in case you are wondering the same thing). Wile this story had a bit of a slow start for me (suspense was minimal for the first half of the book), the pace increased significantly toward the end and I enjoyed the climax and conclusion of the story. There was quite a bit of character development and I did like the protagonists. I also enjoyed the Scotland setting of this novel and the author described the region quite well.
I received an complimentary copy of this novel. Opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Facing the Enemy is a new contemporary romantic suspense novel by Author Paige Edwards. I love the setting of this novel in Scotland, just like Edward's previous romantic suspense novel, Danger on the Loch. Even though this book is said to be a stand-alone novel, there are characters that we met in Danger on the Loch. I loved this aspect and felt like we already knew the many characters in Facing the Enemy.
The main characters have lived exciting lives as M16 agents. Elise and Harry have known each other since they were teenagers. Their early romance was nixed by Elise's parents who are Scottish Royalty. Now years later after being M16 partners, they're still in love but didn't realize it until danger and turmoil enter their lives. Even with the many setbacks that Elise had, Harry was still there to encourage her. I really loved Harry's son Sammy and how he brought out certain things in Elise that she hadn't allowed herself to feel before.
This very suspenseful novel and its unquestionable, crazy bad guy, will keep you on the edge of your seat. The ending of the novel is harrowing and must be read in one sitting; trust me on this. The romance is clean and gut-wrenching at the same time. Thankfully, a certain person realizes they can't run from love.
Facing the Enemy brings out a myriad of emotions that have many highs and lows. Truly though, this novel is worth the crazy and intense ride. You will want to take this ride for yourself by purchasing this novel today.
To coin a Scottish phrase, this book is "pure barry", meaning simply fantastic or brilliant! This is only the second Celtic themed book I've had the pleasure of reading, but it is quite something. It was pretty slow to begin with, but once you get past the first few chapters it's your typical suspense read speed- breakneck pace!
Scottish M16 agent Elise "Taylor" Henderson had been working in London on a case when she was in a horrifying crash that left her agent partner dead, and sidelined her for months. She returns to Scotland to get a second opinion on her injury from the wreck that has left her emotionally battered, and internally more fragile than she'd ever admit.
Harry Benson, another M16 agent and coworker of Elise's, as well as her former crush, is currently investigating a case involving the theft of military munitions from a local army base. Who would be so bold as to steal out from under the Army's nose?
When their paths cross again, Harry and Elise must find a way to work on his mission together despite their differences and personalities of fire and ice.
Meanwhile, an old enemy has a score to settle with an agent that ruined his career, life, family and reputation. And he will stop at nothing to make that agent pay for what he's lost.
The romance in this book was clean, there was a fair bit of blood (not a problem for me as long as it's not overly excessive). A character or two is dispatched by the villain when their help is no longer needed, or they become a risk.
The same villain also mentions human trafficking as one of his largest sources of income, and plans for organ harvesting to be his next biggest project. This is not mentioned in detail, but it and trafficking maybe a trigger for some.
There was only a couple things in general I didn't agree with.
One was that Elise considers teaching Harry's son Sammy about the water spirit horses or kelpies of Scottish folklore. They were rumored to lure children to the deceptively calm water, but Elise figures parents made up the stories to keep the kids safe from the danger of the lochs (lakes).
While magical tales are a big part of Celt tradition and folklore, I personally don't want anything to do with the dark side of the spirit world and find God's Spirit is the only one I need follow.
Secondly, I hated for Harry that he settled for another woman who he found out later really didn't care about him or their child, Sammy. This woman is assumed still living in the story, going about her own thing elsewhere after deserting her husband and child.
I would have loved to see him work out something with Elise's parents and their love story have blossomed sooner. They made a really nice couple, and I hated the unnecessary heartbreak they had to go through because of society and Regency-like ideals.
Also negative- Sammy is referred to as a hellion, blasted bairn (young child), and a variety of other names. He's a feisty child, but just needs someone to be with him and make him mind.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Interviews & Reviews for a free paperback copy of this book! I enjoyed it so much more than I expected to when I first started reading it. :) The thoughts above are my very own, and a positive review was not required.
Two MI6 agents from vastly different upbringings, get a second chance at love as they fight the shadows from the past for survival.
Harry and Elise's paths diverged after University, but she is the only one that he trusts to take care of his son. She is recovering from an accident that has put her on medical leave, so she accepts.
Slower to start, this book switches between multiple viewpoints, and takes a while for the pieces to start to click together. I personally didn't like following the creepy bad guy. Sammy is an adorable with a childlike faith, and a knack for mischief. He quickly charms Elise's staff, while finding plenty of ways to keep them on their toes. Sammy's arrival stirs thoughts that Elise has never pondered before, and makes her wonder about what could have been.
I liked Elise's growth over the course of the story. Harry is a good dad to Sammy, and he works hard to find balance between work and fatherhood. The story builds to an explosive conclusion. I loved the Scottish setting with castles, and tastes of the culture. A book for lovers of romantic suspense.

Language: G (0 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content: PG13; Violence: PG13 At only 27 years old, Elise is facing the probable loss of her chosen career as a field agent for M16 and the possibility she’s never really considered as a future mother. When her old partner, Harry, asks for her help, she agrees to help watch after his son at the castle she grew up in, which happens to be near his new assignment in Scotland. As friend and foe scheme against them, Elise and Harry will learn new things about themselves and each other. While mostly fun to read, there were a few things about this book that I had a hard time with. Edwards’ transitions often felt choppy, like I had to make unnatural leaps to catch up to the next scene after breaking off from the previous one, and there were a few inconsistencies that made me pause and flip back to make sure I had remembered correctly. If these problems are ignored, the story also includes fun thriller aspects and cheesy romance. Elise is Scottish, and Harry is English. The mature content rating is for mention of drugs, alcohol use, and illegal activity. The violence rating is for gun use, knife use, and murder. Reviewed for https://kissthebook.blogspot.com/
The villain in this is cold and calculating, the very worst sort. He added to the tension in the story.
Elise is the ultimate MI6 agent. She trained Harry. Harry was her college love and she rejected him due to her parents. This is their second chance. Elise travels with Harry to his next assignment so she can recuperate from an injury sustained on the job. She ends up minding his 8 year old Sammy who is a handful.
The suspense that followed swallowed me up and wouldn’t let go through the end of the story. I loved this story. The chemistry was perfect and realistic. The story was excellently written and was a pleasure to read.
Sammy was a light in this story and he brought a faith that could only be brought by a child.
I think this could have been a story I really liked if it wasn’t so much work for me to read it. I wanted to want to like this book, but at 77 pages in I’m stopping after having to constantly work too hard to understand what is going on in scenes after both choppy transitions and characters showing up that you have no idea how you got there or who these people are that it was jarring and confusing. I see other people commented on the choppiness and that some of the other characters have been in her post books. Unfortunately, not everyone is introduced well enough to understand why I’m feeling like I’m being expected to know who they are.
I was so excited when this book got to the top of my TBR pile! Paige Edwards' books are so suspenseful with just the right of romance that doesn't detract from the action and suspense. Lady Elise and Harry Benson are MI6 agents who dated about 10 years before, they reconnected when Elise was assigned to be Harry's trainer but getting involved was out of the question at that time. When the story opens Elise is still recuperating from a serious injury that threatens to end her MI6 career and Harry's been assigned undercover on a military base in Scotland. The problem is Harry's assignment starts immediately and he hasn't found someone to take care of his young son Sammy. Since he trusts Elise and her family's estate is near the base in Scotland he asks her to care for Sammy, and she accepts thinking it can't be that hard to watch an 8 year old boy. #famouslastwords
While Harry's trying to figure out how weapons are getting off of the base and on the black market, Elise is busy with Sammy whose never-ending curiosity and energy kept getting him into trouble. He reminded me of the Energizer Bunny--he just kept going and going, making me wish I could have some of whatever kept him going. Meanwhile there's danger ahead for Elise, she just doesn't know it yet. Someone she put in prison has escaped and has gone to great lengths to track her down to get revenge.
As Sammy would say this book is "cracking" (Scottish for excellent). I love multiple points of view--I like knowing what each character is thinking, and here we get Elise's, Harry's and the villian's POV. The author had me wondering who the leak on the base was and if it was tied to the other plotline. I was SO tempted to sneak a peak a few chapters ahead (yes, I'm one of those when I just can't take the suspense anymore), but I was strong and just kept reading.
I loved Elise. She's smart, strong both mentally and physically, but also loving and caring towards those she cares about. I pictured Harry as a swoony James Bond type like Pierce Brosnan, the kinds of man people might under estimate because of his good looks. Harry was smart and would do whatever it took to protect his country and those he loved. The villain was beyond evil and several times I wondered how the good guys were going to get the upper hand. Once I started reading I didn't want to put this book down
This is the first book in a new series, Roxbury Heirs, so if you haven't read any of Paige Edwards' other books this is a great place to start!! I can not wait to read the next books in the series and hope the wait until the next one isn't too long.

This book is encompasses all things I love about romantic suspense. I love this genre and I love this author writing it! I hope she never stops.
Elise and Harry have a history so when their paths cross again, there are some layered emotions and misunderstandings. Elise is one tough lady with a lot on her heart. After a recent accident where she lost her M16 partner, Elise receives some devastating news. She is struggling when Harry reenters her life but that little rascal Sammy sure provides some over the top distractions with his penchant for getting in trouble.
The bad guy is SO bad. The danger is clear in it's progression and as a reader I felt it ramping up and closing in. It was such an exciting feeling and I loved it! Elise is the rock star of the show taking on the Scottish wilderness AND Sammy in one dramatic cat and mouse game. I was glued to the pages the last third of the book and so glad I had uninterrupted reading time so I could engage and invest in the best way possible. What a fun adventure this was! I can't wait for more!
Content: mild peril and violence. Some talk of killing and death. Kissing.

I came so close to DNF this book a million times....
This couple had no tension. I had NO desire for them to be together, not to mention how unprofessional they were. Oh he's on a mission and could get hurt if caught I'm gonna play a joke on him. Oh she's looking for my son in a hall full of weapons, I'm gonna play a joke on her.
They were the most boring couple ever, the plot line was non existent. It would jump from a scene that actually had importance to something totally random and unimportant.
Samy was the most annoying child in the world, but hey at least his Dad realized that too, and then there was the cowlick that whenever mentioned the author felt she had to remind readers that "no hair gel could tame it." Same thing went for Elise's hair and height. You couldn't forget she was a very tall red head because it was mentioned every 3 pages. And taking a sample jet pack suit into a forest? How is that not a bad idea waiting to happen?
Over all poor storyline, and even poorer characters. I was bummed because the Presely-Coombes books were good so I was excited to see more from the same author, but it was a major disappointment. Do not recommend at all.
This was a great romantic suspense. I enjoyed Harry and Elise's story. They're second chance at love seemed doomed from the start. I enjoyed the push and pull between these two. Sammy was a fun mischievous addition to the story. There were times I felt it slowed down a little for me, but the last 1/3 of the book really pulled me in. I enjoyed the suspense and MI6 aspect of this book.
I like having the full story and after starting the book I felt like I was missing background information, especially in regard to the secondary characters. I discovered several of the characters mentioned were from her previous series. I had read 2 of the 3 books and the one I hadn't read gave some of the background for Elise, so I read that before coming back and finishing this book. Most may not feel that was necessary, but for me I wanted all the information and it made this book more enjoyable for me.

I was invested in this mystery. I honestly thought the storyline was placed in the past because that was the vibe the cover gave me. I love the cover regardless of that. But due to that, I was confused for a bit at the beginning but once I got a handle I was invested in Sammy, Harry, and Elise's story. I usually don't like kids in stories but I have to say Sammy was written accurately for his age
This is a second chance romance and Harry is in love and hasn't emotionally moved on from Elise. Elise feels the same however she is going through so many changes she is trying to get a handle on that while falling back in love with Harry but to top it all off a dangerous man is after her and determined to kill her
I followed this story with my breath held, would he get her or would she escape. This story fits the brief of a suspense romance - we see and experience Harry and Elise fall back in love meanwhile a smart killer is stalker her and wants her dead.
