3/5 liked quit on chapter 605/~800+ (raws and tl finished) This novel is an interesting take on hyper-cautious mc with an OP system. Although the concept is fresh to me, I never found the book that exciting. As the book got longer, the formula became more apparent and new enemies and plots seemed to appear out of nowhere, making the achievements of the mc seem arbitrary and reducing what little satisfaction I found in reading. If I had the chance, I would not read this for the first time again.
Disclaimer: My ratings reflect my enjoyment of the book unless stated otherwise. The scale from 1 through 5 is disliked, okay, liked, greatly liked, and loved. The scale is not set with 3 as 'okay' because preserving a normal distribution and "using the whole scale" while reviewing is more important to me than aesthetics (also Goodreads recommends this scale). (webnovels aren't normally distributed, and center on 2/5 instead of 3/5. oh well.)
Characters: 3/5 liked There are many side characters. You keep hearing about a lot of them. This seems cool at first, and the side characters even seem to be 1.5 dimensional and different. However, you then realize that every side character is completely irrelevant to the story, and that the mc is literally the only person who matters. Without the side characters, the story would be identical. Main character characterization: male, hyper-cautious, cares about people in his sect, cares about home world, will not sacrifice self for anyone, wants to live forever, doesn't care about random people, has system, has huge hacks, relies on hacks more and more as story progresses, projects brain-damage field to nearby enemies, is 1-2 dimensional.
World: This is the scammy type of world which contantly has more, bigger places conveniently revealed every time the mc gets very strong relative to those around him. I hate this type of world because it removes a great deal of satisfaction from the powering-up in the novel. Instead of seeing a mc claw his way to the top of the world, you instead get to watch hamster-man run on his little treadmill and constantly be plotted against by people stronger than himself. Very unsatisfying.
Story: It is formulaic and the formula isn't satisfying. MC sits in seclusion for many years, powers up, comes out to remark on the happenings in the world, order underlings to do stuff, maybe does something nice for someone, remarks on enemies plotting against him, gets free loot from system, and returns to cultivation. Frankly, there are very few awesome moments here. I haven't had any moments that made me feel hyped or even made me smile. The reason I am reading this is probably sunken-cost and the novelty of the formula rather than any inherent interestingness. After the first couple hundred chapters, all issues are solved through bullshit deduction and the mc conveniently getting stronger through system loot/specialness to just be able to resolve the issue.
If I had known what I know about the book before I started, I wouldn't have bothered reading past chapter 100, and I probably would not have elected to start reading this at all.
Chinese Webnovel with a Xianxia theme having a unique take on the genre, got plenty of comedy and a cautious OP protagonist. I liked the initial character setup, world-building and story development with later parts getting a bit of drag.
.The review is for all 1192 chapters. This is a Chinese web novel, fan translated into English.
The protagonist gets an OP system but still is cautious all through the novel. This approach is a first for me among the many Xianxia web novels I have read, especially considering his OP powers. The protagonist prefers to hide and scheme instead of face-slapping and battling away. This felt like a breath of fresh air among the cultivation novels I have read.
Do feel one needs to have read plenty of Chinese cultivation Web Novels to enjoy the work.
A surprisingly excellent story. This is a cautious protagonist who spends thousands of years avoiding trouble to the best of his ability. Its competently written and not as light hearted as you might expect. It does get tedious to read at times later on because the protagonist goes out of his way to avoid any potential excitement and generally succeeds.
This story is basically 'My Senior Brother is Too Steady' without humor and parody being the main genres. Also without the annoying forced plot and with a more assertive protagonist.
