Brutal.
Aquí esta Roma en datos. A nivel político, militar, social, religioso.
No es un libro para leer, si no para consultar e ir digiriendo según las necesidades que se tengan en cada momento.
Para que todo amante de la antigua Roma tenga en su estantería y sufra palpitaciones de emoción cada vez que abre sus páginas.
Tiene algún fallo. A veces no es fácil condensar tanta historia en unas breves frases y en infografías. Falta el detalle y los gráficos no son fáciles de interpretar.
Cabe destacar que el tamaño es grande (mayor que A4 en ancho) y eso ayuda con los gráficos.
Vamos, un tesoro.

I've been interested in ancient ccivilizations since I was about 9 years old. Rome wasn't my absolute favorite but it always held a certain fascination - not least because half my family lives in Italy and I've been to see so many ruins and temples and loved them all.
This book is giving sort of an overview on what made the Roman Empire what it is. From how many people lived in Rome itself vs. the provinces to how the Roman military was structured or how the political system worked. The book thus shows who had what rights / responsibilities and how the entire empire "worked".
Every page is showing graphics illustrating the statistics. This also nicely emphasizes the changes the empire underwent throughout history.
Lots of information and details in this which makes this book a great reference for later reading, too.
I very much enjoyed the structure of this and - by extension - Rome itself. It also made for a perfect companion book for other non-fiction books about Ancient Rome.

Un libro único que utiliza la visualización de datos para acercarnos de manera gráfica a las características de la República romana y el posterior imperio: su sistema política, su economía, sus habitantes, su ejército, las principales batallas... Las infografías se presentan de maneras vistosas y originales, no siempre fáciles de entender a la primera, pero parte del juego es recorrerlas y descifrarlas.

Ich nehme das Update von Donnerstag jetzt einfach mal als Review.
Ich gebe zu es war ein Impulskauf aber definitiv ein guter. Das gibt es bei Goodreads leider momentan erst in der Originalsprache aber ich glaube ich hätte es auch auf französisch gekauft um ehrlich zu sein. Wie schon das Statistikbuch über den 2.Weltkrieg, ist auch das hier mit perfekt dargestellten Grafiken gefüllt, die teilweise so schön kompliziert und teilweise auch so unnötig sind, dass mir richtig warm ums Herz wird. Da ich die letzten Monate sowieso wieder eine Rom-Phase durchlebe, traf es sich recht gut, dass ich dieses Buch gefunden habe. Allerdings habe ich es - obwohl gestern erst angefangen - heute schon durch. Hat sich trotzdem gelohnt. Ich glaube ich habe mich selten so wie ein Kind gefühlt. Kann das Buch weiterempfehlen wer schon den Vorgänger gut fand, wenngleich Antikes Rom 101 Basiswissen vorausgesetzt wird, da viele Dinge auch einfach nicht erklärt werden. Besonders ärgerlich finde ich hierbei, dass die Texte eigentlich oft nur leicht über Allgemeinbildung in dem Bereich hinausgehendes Wissen vermitteln und wirklich ein höheres Niveau haben sollten, da die Zielgruppe des Buches sich wahrscheinlich nur aus Autisten wie mir konstituiert. In den Grafiken waren allerdings auch sehr viele neue Dinge enthalten, die ich nicht kannte oder wusste, wie z. B. eine Liste aller gesetzlichen und kostumbralen (ist das ein Wort? wie heißt das richtig?) Feiertage der römischen Gesellschaft, wo ich eigentlich nur von Saturnalia, Lupercalia und latent von den Apollonischen und Romanischen Spielen wusste, sowie die verschiedenen religiösen Ämter Roms, wo außer Pontifex Maximus, Rex Sacrorum, Pontifenkollegium, Standardauguren und den Flamen so viele neue Begriffe auftauchten, dass ich mich wie in einem Bällebad fühlte.
Das Buch lässt sich bei voller Begeisterung und totaler Missachtung der meisten Beitexte in etwa 3 bis 4 Stunden gut lesen (auch gut in Bulemieform um 2:00 nachts), ist sicherlich danach auch aber regelmäßig einen Blick wert, zumal man mit einigen Grafiken, wie der prozentualen Bebauung der Stadt Rom oder der Geschichte der Legionen gut 1-2 h genießen kann, wenn man wirklich will.
Insgesamt gibt es nur 4,5 Sterne, weil man denke ich noch mehr draus hätte machen können.

A nivel visual, este libro se disfrutá mucho, las infografías son una obra de arte, muy fáciles de entender.
El libro no se centra en la historia de Roma, sino en sus ciudades y habitantes; la forma en que se gobernaba; y el como era la guerra y el ejército romano.
Es impresionante ver cómo eran las ciudades de este gran imperio; como eran organizadas las provincias; como era la estructura familiar de un romano; como vivían las mujeres y como era ser un esclavo. Interesante el aspecto de la religión, mostrando claro, la expansión del cristianismo. Finalmente, la economía romana, pese a la escasez de datos, se logra hacer una gran red comercial en el Mediterráneo.
Sobre las formas de gobierno, es muy bien detallada las funciones de los políticos, así también como las dinastías. Un gran apartado esté.
Finalmente, en el ejército, se muestran como era las legiones, cuales eran sus estrategias y formas de combate, como era un campamento militar; que equipamento llevaba un militar romano; como se asediaba una ciudad; como era la cabellerria y fuerza naval romana, por último el mostrar algunas guerras importantes romanas, es algo muy fundamental para ver lo anterior visto en la realidad.
El libro, es algo que siempre se tendrá a la mano para repasar aspectos romanos. Como material educativo, es imprescindible.

Açıkçası bu kadar veri yüklü grafikler beklemiyordum. Bir oturuşta okurum demiştim. Yanılmışım. İnfografiklerdeki verileri okuyup anlamak için epey bir düşünmeniz gerekebiliyor. Grafikler güzel düşünülmüş ve sunulmuş. Ancak yine de sorunlar yok değil. Bu sorunlardan bazıları yapılan çeviri hataları bazıları da sanırım baskı hataları. Grafiklerin bazı yerlerinde yazılar o kadar küçük ki neredeyse büyüteç kullanmak gerekiyor. Belki ikinci bir baskı olursa düzeltilebilirler. Sonuç olarak kitap kuruluşundan çöküşüne kadar geçen sürede Roma’ya farklı kesitlerden bakmanızı sağlıyor. Keşke son kitabımı yazarken elimin altında olsaydı. Kitabımda Roma ile ilgili bölümleri yazarken bana çok faydası olurdu.

This is an ambitious book. It tries to give a history of Rome in pictures instead of words. It is a noble effort but it ultimately fails.
A lot of work went into this book. There is great attention to detail. (I did spot one typo when they said Caesar was in Gaul in the winter of 71 BC.) It is just hard to not use words.
There's a page on the siege of Jerusalem in AD 70. Lots happened but I am not sure what.
On first glance the book looks great. The paper used is excellent, so thick that I kept thinking pages were stuck together. The printing is clear but often confusing with the use of similar colours a lot. There are lots of symbols used but they are not always explained.
The book needs an index.
Overall, I think it fails. There's a related book on the Second World War using infographics. I'll skip that one.

Very good book with one often present drawback; the colouring is easy follow in the diagrams but sometimes hard to follow in the diagram legends which makes many diagrams unnecessary hard to interpret. Seems like the classic mistake to not take into account that it's harder to differentiate colours of small dots than larger areas in diagrams.
Still a very good and interesting book. Probably a good inspiration for role-playing if one wants to go the culture-gaming way.

I managed to struggle to the end because occasionally the book had really interesting parts, but most of the time the figures were so overly complicated as to be completely unreadable.

Very enjoyable history of Ancient Rome told through infographics. It covers many areas of Roman history and society including the army, The Punic Wars, Gallic Wars, Spartacus, the navy, religious life and rituals, wages and spending power. You really need to be into infographics to read this, but it is a different way of learning and I have learnt many new things about Ancient Rome from this book. I found the part on wages and what could be bought on a certain salary very interesting and the evolution of the Roman army.

Great schematic representation of Roman civil institutions, political and military structures. With chronology of their development and extinction. As Roman civilisation came through days of kingdom to republic and then to imperium they have to invent lots of still relevant mechanisms to keep growing and absorbing new territories and cultures, defeating more skilful enemies relying on discipline and innovation and overcoming internal turmoils for centuries.

Fantastic book full of figures the help explain the Roman world. According to the book, both population and economic output peak around 200 CE, around the time of the Severans. Why do most people and historians consider the Antonines to be the peak of Rome and the Severans to be the start of the decline phase when statistically it was the Severans?

Libro muy muy interesante sobre datos de Roma desde sus comienzos hasta su final. Infografías sobre la cultura, la política, el ejército, la religión, la familia, el Derecho y su evolución a lo largo de los siglos te aseguran horas de lectura e investigación.
Realmente interesante para aquellos que disfrutamos con los datos y la Historia.

I seldom use the word awesome but that is the best way to describe this book. It is so interesting to get a numerical breakdown and visual information on the various aspects of Roman society. The book must have taken an immense amount of work to compile. The maps, army and civilian clothing drawings are mint. Fantastic effort.

Interessant, ook voor mensen met wat voorkennis. Sommige van de info graphics zijn zo complex dat ik me afvraag of een stuk tekst niet meer verhelderend zou zijn geweest, maar mag de pret niet drukken.

Je kan het ook te moeilijk maken. Sommige Inforgraphics zijn niet of alleen met zeeeer veel concentratie te begrijpen. Verder wat irritante (snij-)fout en redactie fouten. Zonde voor zo'n duur boek.

Alcuni grafici sono difficili da capire ma affronta argomenti talmente complessi che si può perdonare. Fondamentale da tenere in casa come promemoria.
