I’m wary of tales featuring supernatural activity, of ‘other dimensions’ and particularly of devils and demons. These are elements that I’m not able to grasp, or to accept; I simply do not believe in such things. So I try to avoid books in which these components are in evidence - though I do make some exceptions. I’ve dabbled with Stephen King books in which telekinesis is practiced and other supernatural activity is in evidence, and I’ve regularly sought out books in which various means of transporting its characters through time is the prime driver of the story. So why can I accept and enjoy time travel when I struggle so much to accept ghouls and ghosts? In truth, I really don’t know.
This story features those that are dead and those that are living, they intermingle and it’s not always possible to discern one from the other. A young man wakes to realise he needs to be somewhere else to keep a promise, and he needs to be there in five days time. His destination is somewhere a long way from where he is now, so this appears to offer the promise of a road trip – now there’s an adventure I really do like. He’d awoken in one place but then, oddly, he is suddenly somewhere else. And now he’s bumped into a girl he knows, perhaps a former girlfriend. Already it’s starting to feel like a mixed bag of my likes and my dislikes. Can it still it work for me?
Well, unfortunately it really doesn’t, and for a number of reasons. Firstly, I quickly started to find the whole storyline too confusing; it’s a very busy tale, with a lot of moving parts and unexplained happenings. I knew I’d need patience to work my way into this one, but that’s something I know I lack. Secondly, I found the main characters somewhat irritating. I could see that they’d both had challenges and some bad luck in their lives, but I couldn’t get a grip on their relationship and I don’t think the chemistry between them quite worked either. Or if it did, I lost it in the confusing nature of their meeting and the oddity of their subsequent interactions. I also found the overall mood quite depressing. It would eventually be explained why this was the case, and though this clarified much of what had gone before it didn’t alter my view of things – for me the ship had already sailed. Ultimately, there’s a mystery here, but no real adventure to drive it along.
I listened to an audio version, competently narrated by the multi-talented Rob Shapiro. Perhaps there’s an audience of readers/listeners who will find this one more appealing than I did, namely those that are more attuned to both the major theme that evolves in the book and also the supernatural elements that are an integral part of it throughout. It’s a miss for me, but I did work my way through the whole story, so two stars it is.

TITLE: The Beached Ones AUTHOR: Colleen M Story PUB DATE: 06.14.2022
The Beached Ones is a haunting tale of supernatural fiction about the bonds of brotherhood, the meaning of love and sacrifice, a promise, and eventual clarity about purpose.
The storytelling style uses flashbacks and disjointed memories to captures brothers’ Daniel and Tony’s journey from Iowa to San Francisco.
The story is both unnerving and moving, but hopeful and emotional.
Don't let this plain, simple cover fool you; 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐎𝐧𝐞𝐬 is anything but simple. It is a complex, emotional story that blurs the lines between life and death. I have to admit, as I started reading, I was a bit confused but very intrigued.
Daniel is confused when he wakes up in Iowa with only hazy memories of an accident. He doesn't know why people won't answer his calls or talk to him until he meets Jolene. But why is she different? Through flashbacks, we learn about Daniel and his past throughout the story. He and his younger brother Tony grew up in an awful home. Now Daniel feels he needs to rescue Tony.
The uniqueness of this book is a blend of supernatural elements with human bonds that Colleen Story has woven in, and with such purpose. As I said, in the beginning, all the whos and whys are not crystal clear at first, but when they start coming together, it's an emotional landslide.
You'll be hard-pressed to label this just a ghost story when the writing is that of compelling literary fiction with characters seeking forgiveness and peace.
Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours and @camcat_books for a spot on tour and a gifted copy.
Paranormal fiction that feels otherworldly. Daniel wakes up after a motorcycle stunt goes horribly wrong but can't remember much about it. What he does remember is that he needs to pick up his younger brother in San Francisco in five days. Along the way he meets up with a woman who was/is? his girlfriend and another character determined to keep them apart. What's follows is a superbly written journey that pulls at the heartstrings while posing some existential questions that keep you thinking. This one grabbed my attention right away and held it right through to the satisfying conclusion. Daniel's love for his brother, and his need to rescue him from an unhealthy home life is a central thread that drives the story forward. Told through flashbacks of then interspersed with what is happening now the story unfolds in a most surprising way and although the story deals with suicide it leaves you with a powerful sense of hope, love and understanding. I really enjoyed this one and have a feeling it's going to stay with me for quite a while. And while it deals with sensitive themes it handles them in a real and respectful way. . Thank you to the author, CamCat Books and Suzy Approved Book Tours for the gifted copy and including me on this tour.
I hadn’t realised this was going to be a bit of a paranormal type story and if I had I wouldn’t have chosen it. However I had selected it so stuck with what ended up being a rather confusing tale which I’m thinking now I couldn’t really explain to anyone if I tried. So just not my cup of tea but others may love the ramblings.
How do I describe this?? Other worldly? Mysterious and a little bit scary? Uniquely written it flowed with a growing urgency that could not be identified. It made me nervous and was anxious to see where it was going. It’s told in a past and present POV and I chose to listened to the audio version and Rob Shapiro narrated it, He was an excellent choice and I highly recommend the audiobook version. The story takes place with a young man waking up and trying to figure out where he is and how can he get to his brother. He has to find his brother. From there it’s a roller coaster of twists and turns and some big surprises. I don’t want to give anything away so you’ll have to see for yourself how it ends. I’m giving this a high 4 ⭐️. Thanks CamCat Books and IBPA Audiobooks via NetGalley.
I was blown away with this story as it was told through flashbacks in time to the present, that was beautifully written showing the incredible power of sibling love and protectiveness that stands the test of time. Devastating yet uplifting, a must read for the summer. ⠀ Add this one to your June TBR now! It gave me one of my all time fav movie vibes, 𝘎𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘵 with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. 🥰
This was both gripping and mystifying. From the opening page it was obvious that something strange was going on. Within a few pages it became obvious that Daniel Shepherd was dead but then he met an old flame, Jolene, who could both see him and touch him. He started disbelieving that he was really dead. The only thing that he cares about is finding his younger brother, Tony.
The story is told in flashbacks. It tells of emotional abuse and neglect but also the strong love between siblings. Daniel is ten years older than Tony and does his best to protect him and is determined to fulfill a promise that he made.
There is also Jolene. Poor Jolene who has seen ghosts since she was five years old but never one she could touch.
I found the book hard to put down. It provokes many emotions; sorrow, amusement, bemusement and disgust among others. But the one thing that glows true throughout is Daniel’s love for Tony and his love for his motorbike. Be warned that this is a story that will hold you and wrench your heartstrings.
An emotional story of love and hope with a supernatural twist. Daniel and his younger brother grew up in an abusive home. Daniel has become a stunt rider. After an accident leaves him with no memory of what happened he knows one thing. He needs to go get his younger brother. The flasbacks in this make it an emotional read. I really liked the unusual plot with supernatural elements that make this a compelling read. I really enjoyed.
The Beached Ones by Colleen M. Story was not a usual read for me, but It did not disappoint me.
The story is about Daniel and his younger brother, Daniel is a stunt rider, who comes from an abusive home where he escaped in hope of getting established to go back and save his younger brother. But when he wakes up after a motorcycle accident, he finds himself in Iowa, not remembering anything. All he remembers is that he has five days to pick up his brother in San Francisco. Living in Iowa and now in California, I found the setting of this story very interesting. I really enjoyed how the story unfolded through the story and surprised me. I experience sorrow and hope at the same time, I was not expecting this book to be an emotional one for me. It was so heartwarming to read how much Daniel loves his younger brother, Tony. The story is told in flashbacks that was very interesting.
This imaginative story is a story of a big brother so devoted to his 9-year younger brother that, against all odds, he's compelled to travel cross country to pick him up from a summer camp. The problems are many, there are ghosts and paranormal activities that are clever and surprised me. All the way to the end. It's a very good read with excellent characters and resolution.
Sort of a dual timeline in that we learn about Daniel & Tony's background as Daniel relives his memories of Tony growing up - the games the played, the things he provided to make up for no dad and a mom who is verbally abusive and neglectful. They have such a strong bond and I love that.
Complete review on the blog for a book blog tour, 10/26/22.
A surreal scene opens “The Beached Ones” as the main character, Daniel, awakens to a world that doesn’t make sense. He’s alone in the sand dunes as whales begin to beach themselves. His last memory is the extreme motorsports show he was driving in. Why is he on this beach? Why is he alone? Why are these whales acting so crazy??
Daniel A. Shepard is a survivor. A protector. A fighter, and a dreamer. He overcame tremendous odds, climbing out of the tempest of his childhood, landing his dream job, and returning to rescue his younger brother from the same neglectful and abusive childhood. He is a genuinely good guy, no thanks to his parents. The absentee father appears to be the more caring parent in this household: at least he had the decency to leave. If it weren’t for the tender attention and love of an elderly neighbor, Daniel and his brother Tony could easily have been lost to an uncaring world.
The author, Colleen Story, deftly weaves this story through a series of flashbacks to Daniel’s childhood, dancing on the edges of his mind as he tries to navigate strange surroundings and bizarre events. He questions much about his current state, and he should. The only thing he knows with a clarity that holds his heart together is that he needs to be in San Francisco in a few days to pick up his little brother Tony.
As the story unfolds, there are plenty of questions. Nothing seems to make sense. The world isn’t right. People aren’t right. Nearly everyone treats Daniel like he’s invisible, with the exception of a former girlfriend, Jolene, and her current boyfriend, Brent. Neither Jolene nor Brent seem happy that Daniel has turned up, but they agree to get him to San Francisco.
There is so much happening in this storyline that the reader’s patience is necessary. Each page, each new chapter, seems to bring more questions. The author spins her story well but keeps her readers in suspense as the questions mount to a nearly unbearable degree. As the answers finally start to come, we almost wish they wouldn’t. This strange and peculiar story has a decidedly dark, visceral edge. To call it haunting might understate the matter.
Daniel and Tony are the bright lights in this shadowy tale. Daniel’s love for his brother, his drive to rescue Tony from their unbearable childhood, and his determination to be a rock of strength for his brother are what makes him such a remarkable person. In the gloomy depths of their struggle, there is an overwhelming beauty. It is often when a person chooses to hold out their hand to help another that they most help themselves. This generous nature, this unbound love, burns out the gloom of this story like fog around the Golden Gate Bridge, allowing us to truly appreciate the tragedies and triumphs of this remarkable story. There is glory in the paradox.
Readers should note that there is a theme of suicide within this storyline. If trigger points are an issue, please consider carefully whether this read is a good fit for you. Having given this caveat, I can heartily recommend “The Beached Ones” by Colleen M. Story for readers who enjoy paranormal/ghost stories, and for those who delight in a good, angsty, thought-provoking read.
This is a very interesting book. I enjoyed reading and learning a lot about ghosts. I would totally recommend this book to all who likes reading ghost stories. But this book is not only about ghosts. It is also but love, disappointments, despair, hopes, ambitions; a book about life.
The Beached Ones by Colleen M. Story is a story about Daniel A. Shepard. He did not know that he had died in a motocross accident. That was his way of living; doing death defying stunts on a motorcycle. He knew his mother never loved him, never cared about him. His mother only cared for his brother, Tony. And although she cared for Tony, she was still an abusive mother to the both of them. He had packed his bag waiting for the day he would eventually leave the house trailer for good. He also knew in his heart that he would take Tony away from their mother. Jolene was one who could see and speak with ghosts. She was once his sweetheart but they had parted ways. She has been searching ways to reach her mother after she had died from stomach cancer . She could not understand why she cannot see or talk with the ghost of her mother. She did not expect to see Daniel, alive and well in Iowa. She knew Daniel is a ghost except that she could touch him. And that they still have a connection. Daniel did not know where he was . His thought was only about his mission. He has to reach Tony on August 29 at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, in San Francisco.
In this book, Daniel was going about, intent on finishing his mission: to go to San Francisco and get Tony. He did not want Tony to live with their mother who lashes out her frustrations on them. Daniel wants to give Tony a wonderful life. Based on my experience, I believe ghosts stay around because they have a task to finish or resolve an unfinished issue. When my uncle died, some members of his group started looking for a document that no member of his family knew about. It was a very important document to the group. The family members tried looking for it but it was not in any of his belongings. One night, my aunt heard some knocking by a wall but did not mind it. After hearing it for three nights, she started to worry because there might be some rats or something. So they started to look at this wall and found a panel that slides. They found the document hidden behind the panel. I have had experiences of encountering ghosts in my life, most were scenes like when Daniel was going up fading into oblivion; while some were pleasant ones, like wanting you to feel comfortable or giving you help or just letting you know that everything will come out fine.
I have wondered why the book was entitled The Beached ones. Now I understand. As I read, I learned that there are so many ghosts roaming around amidst us; looking over us, watching over us, and probably waiting for that one day, we finally have that sense to look into their eyes and know: they are here, just as alive as we are. I got this book for free and I thank the author Collen M. Story . I hope my review gives justice to this wonderful book. I give this book 5 stars.
Spoilers: Some believe that ghosts become so because they have unfinished business. They have to send a message, look after someone living, or have to meet some goal or at least be told that the goal has been met before they can ascend in the spirit world.
Colleen M. Story's fantasy, The Beached Ones, is about a man who has died but has an emotional connection that keeps him tied to the human world.
The man who has passed on, ceased to be, is no more, and gone up and joined the choir invisible (too much Monty Python sorry) is Daniel A. Shepherd, who is part of an Extreme Sports team. He remembers a show in L.A. in which he and others flew over the heads of the people watching, then nothing. Daniel is confused particularly why no one can see or hear him and why he can move quickly from one place to another. After Daniel manages to communicate with his former girlfriend, Jolene he learns that he died during that stunt in L.A. Daniel needs the help of Jolene and her current boyfriend, Brent, who can also see and hear him, to go to San Francisco where his younger brother, Tony, is waiting for him.
The Beached Ones is a bizarre and at times beautiful book that explores life after death and the connections that the dead made with the living.
Story's depiction of the Afterlife is deceptively normal at first. It takes a while for Daniel to realize that he's dead because things seem so normal but somehow are off. Daniel has form and substance. Jolene can even touch him. There appears to be no set patten over who can see him and who can't, so one could attribute the behavior of others as they are simply ignoring him. It's only after he sees the article online of his own death that he realizes the truth. Even then some things are kept from him until the time is right for him to remember them.
Once he starts to investigate the matter, Daniel's experience in the Afterlife has some interesting perspectives. He travels wherever he wants from state to state with only a thought. A supernatural creature appears to be stalking him and can take other forms.
In one beautiful passage, Daniel appears on a beach and views a pod of whales. He sees a mother and her calf being beached and tries to free them. This moment serves as a reminder for those that he left behind.
This moment with the whales foreshadows the connections that Daniel left behind in the world of the living. He and Tony were abused by their mother. Daniel protected his younger brother and practically raised him by himself. Realizing that his brother is alone, propels Daniel to find and reunite with him. This fraternal love is lovingly explored as Daniel worries that crossing over could mean leaving Tony behind. The whales symbolize Tony and Daniel's relationship and how Daniel cared for his brother and wants to return to him.
The afterlife portrayal in The Beached Ones is fantastic but it's the emotional bond between the two brothers that is the real heart of the story.

I have to say I never like to spoil books in my review so will try my best to abide by this self imposed rule but I can honestly say I have not read such an emotionally charged ending to a book in a long time. But I am getting ahead of myself.
The Beached Ones focuses primarily on Daniel who grew up with his younger brother in an abusive home but Daniel was the only one who escaped. Now an established stunt rider he intends to go back to his home town and rescue his younger brother. Until one jump goes horribly wrong. Or so he thought. Daniel recovers to find himself in Iowa, completely unscathed, but his life is drastically changed. With a best friend who won’t answer his calls and a girlfriend who seems to be hiding something he becomes increasingly terrified of what did happen but he clings to the one thing he knows he must do. He has to pick up his brother in San Francisco in five days. Now he must make the journey from the isolated fields of Iowa to the crowded streets of San Francisco all while fighting through a fog of disjointed memories and supernatural encounters to pay a debt he didn’t know he owed.
Colleen M Story has created a story that is equally heart-warming and heart-breaking with a lot of supernatural and simply natural twists and turns along the way. I was instantly drawn into Daniel’s world and then his plight as he tried to reunite with his brother, Tony. I adored the relationships between the main characters, Daniel, Jolene and Brent, as well as the side ones. Story’s writing kept me hooked and guessing throughout. I have to say I adored the characters, even Brent and Jolene for all their secrets and shortcomings.
I liked how the story shifted to snippets of Daniel’s past and his current present as well. Despite this jumping back and forth I felt it gave the story more of a steady setting and was something I really enjoyed. Story is also a master of twists. I honestly didn’t see a lot of them coming and was pleasantly surprised and heart-broken at the same time.
The ending was something I found had some truly beautiful writing although keeping a touch of the visceral we find throughout. While it wasn’t the perfect happy ending you may have wanted it was perfect for the story and really closed everyone’s tale off in a beautifully poignant way. It’s actually really difficult to talk about how much I loved the ending without spoiling some of the twists and turns but let me tell you it is worth the wait.
All in all The Beached Ones is a beautiful story about keeping promises, protecting those close to you and trying to find the light in the dark. It does have darker themes in there such as mental health, domestic abuse and suicide but these are handled with care and I loved the twist (again no spoilers) relating to some of these events. This is one that will definitely stick with me and I will certainly be looking out for more of Story’s work in the future!
Where do I even begin with The Beached Ones by Colleen M. Story? This captivating novel took me on a thrilling ride from start to finish, leaving me utterly mesmerized by its unique narrative structure and gripping storyline. Let me tell you, this book is a true treasure that deserves all the praise it can get.
One of the aspects that truly sets The Beached Ones apart is its anachronic nature. It's as if Story took the traditional notions of time and tossed them out the window. And I must say, I'm incredibly grateful for that! The way the story unfolds in a non-linear fashion adds an extra layer of intrigue and mystery, keeping me hooked and eagerly unraveling the enigma within its pages.
We are introduced to Daniel, a character whose past is shrouded in darkness and pain. Having escaped from an abusive home, he embarks on a journey to rescue his younger brother. However, fate takes an unexpected turn when a stunt goes horribly wrong, transporting Daniel to a different place and time. Suddenly, he finds himself in Iowa, seemingly unharmed but faced with a life that has been irrevocably altered.
As Daniel grapples with his newfound reality, Story deftly weaves a complex web of emotions, supernatural encounters, and fragmented memories. The sense of terror and uncertainty that permeates the narrative is palpable, leaving me with a racing heart and an insatiable desire to uncover the truth.
Throughout the book, Story's writing style is nothing short of exceptional. She strikes the perfect balance between vivid descriptions and a fast-paced plot, bringing each scene to life in my mind's eye. Her prose is both evocative and immersive, effortlessly transporting me from the isolating fields of Iowa to the bustling streets of San Francisco. It's a testament to her talent that I felt like a silent observer, right alongside Daniel as he fought his way through the fog of disjointed memories.
The characters in The Beached Ones are richly developed and incredibly relatable. Daniel's unwavering determination to fulfill his promise and save his brother resonated deeply with me, while the supporting cast added depth and complexity to the narrative. Story masterfully explores themes of family, loyalty, and the indomitable spirit of the human soul, all while keeping me on the edge of my seat.
In conclusion, The Beached Ones is a remarkable novel that captivates with its anachronic storytelling, gripping plot, and unforgettable characters. Colleen M. Story has crafted a true literary masterpiece that pushes the boundaries of conventional storytelling, leaving readers breathless and hungry for more. If you're seeking a book that will transport you to another world and keep you guessing until the very end, look no further. This is a must-read for any lover of fiction and a shining example of the author's storytelling prowess.
The Beached Ones by Colleen M. Story delivers an eerily haunting story around Danny, a young man who grows up in a rundown Butte trailer park with his single mom and younger brother Tony. Danny is the responsible one in the family, doing his best to protect Tony from the dysfunctional consequences of a mother who drinks, works longs shifts, and entertains an endless line of no-good boyfriends at the expense of her children.
When Danny graduates from high school and can finally escape the trailer they call hell-hole, he is torn about leaving Tony behind. But it is the only way things can change. Danny leaves and achieves his dreams but then something happens. He wakes on a beach littered with stranded whales and has no memory of how he got there. As he searches for answers he runs into one strange occurrence after another. Clues are cleverly delivered from Danny’s POV that take him on a bizarre trip as he pieces together his past and present to figure out what is going on as he races against time to pick up his brother from camp.
The glue of this story is the unbreakable bond between Danny and his younger brother. Colleen Story’s masterful sensory details offer subtle clues to help figure things out, as she weaves Danny’s memories of the past with the present into the unpredictable with page-turning urgency as he meets up with his ex. A girl who see ghosts. Story delivers the coup de grâce as all the emotionally charged pieces come together with a clear resolution.
I award The Beached Ones with a strong 4 stars and recommend it for readers who enjoy paranormal, vampire, drama, and suspense. However, I do add a caveat for those who are sensitive to the topic of suicide. Those who have been touched by this tragedy may not enjoy this book, but others who have contemplated taking their lives may find it helpful. I can’t predict which for every individual. For me, it left me feeling melancholy but found it a very good read.
I received a copy of this book through Black Phoenix Book Tours and have not been compensated for reviewing or recommending it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from iRead Book Tours. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
Warning: The book does explore suicide, and there is one scene indicating potential sexual abuse (that is stopped before it starts). There is also a scene dealing with “cutting,” and it’s established this is not the first time the person has engaged in self-harm.
The Beaches Ones made my head hurt. Was Daniel really dead? Was he alive? Why could some people see him while others couldn’t? How was Daniel solid to Jolene and Brent but not to other people? Why does Daniel shower, eat, and bleed if he is dead? Talk about a mind-bender! I had no earthly idea what the heck was going on.
Things began to make sense when we met the guru, Richard Wells. Thankfully, now the answers start flowing.
There were some inconsistencies in the story. Jolene says a couple of times that she started seeing dead people when she was five. She also remembers when she was four and saw her deceased neighbor looking for their alive cat. While the story itself was indeed a mystery, leaving me puzzled for most of it, I had to dock half a point for giving two different ages. Sorry.
As the warning states, some scenes deal with suicide. One, in particular, is very intense. It made my anxiety soar.
After all the mystery, heartache, pain, and suffering, the final moments were unexpected but beautiful. HEA.
After The Beaches Ones, Colleen M. Story stresses that if you have thoughts of suicide or self-harm, please call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. They also list two “help” sites.
The Beached Ones is a ghost story that breaks a lot of rules, plays with your expectations and keeps surprising you. Three intertwining love stories weave through the whole book – Daniel’s love for his decade-younger brother, his love for a fragile, troubled girl, and his love of motorcycles. He would die for any of them. And he does.
It’s a book that tosses the reader from one emotion to another. Outrage and sadness at Daniel’s troubled upbringing, unravelling via flashbacks throughout the book. Bewilderment as we see a world between worlds through his eyes. Grief and sadness at some of the decisions that the characters have to take, frustration, curiosity, fear…. It’s also a book that made me ask existential questions - about what it is to be alive or dead, to have agency, to be visible, to be known. I found myself thinking about other invisibilities – of age and class and social position – and of the liminal worlds inhabited by people who are discounted. I found myself thinking about what it is to love someone, when you can’t see them, touch them, be with them. And about what a small thing life is, what a wafer thin boundary there is between existence and non-existence.
Issues of suicide figure at various points in this story, and this isn't a book to read if you are battling those issues in your own life or in relation to someone you love. But all the same, it made me think about the power involved in an act of self-extinction, the terrifying energy unleashed by even the loneliest of suicides.
The book is exquisitely plotted. There are twists throughout, and I didn’t see them coming. Events and relationships cross in unexpected ways that always make absolute sense as one reaches their conjunction. Nothing feels forced in this story, despite the labyrinthine contortions that it actually accomplishes.
Daniel Shepherd had a rough start in life, but managed to escape an abusive home and have a career as a stunt rider. Yet he would not forget his younger brother Tony. His memories are hazy as he forgets why he suddenly wakes in Iowa. The only clear thought in his head is that he must pick up his brother from camp in San Francisco in five days. Meeting with his former girlfriend, Jolene and her new companion, Brent, they agree to help him on his way to the west coast. Yet things are not as they seem, and with each strange encounter and weird event, memories come back to Daniel. He wonders if he'll make it to the coast at all or even if he should.
I had no idea what to expect when I opened this book, and I was amazingly surprised on several levels. First, I had no idea it was paranormal fiction. Daniel is a spirit and he has unfinished business. It takes Daniel a while to accept this, but his ex, Jolene has always seen ghosts, and for some reason, so can Brent. Daniel has a lot of holes in his memories, but they slowly come back as he recalls his terrible childhood. It's dark and awful and pulled desperately at my heart. Then there's the mystery of how Daniel died, and I loved the way that unfolded with each layer unveiling stunning new revelations. There's also the mystery of Brent and Jolene and how they're all tangled together. So many twists and turns! While I love books with the paranormal and mysteries, it is the phenomenal characterization which made this book an incredible read. Every emotion was evoked and whirled around and had me so wrapped up in the story. This was Daniel's story, but the secondary characters were also so beautifully layered.
I read this book in one sitting. The author does a great job of mixing the paranormal with the real world feelings of guilt.
There is a content warning of suicide at the beginning of the book and as reader I appreciate that so that I could make sure I was in the right headspace when I read it.
This book progresses the story through what is happening in the present with flashbacks of the past which brings the plot together. The reader is on the current journey with the main character, Daniel, while also getting looks at his previous home life with his much younger brother, Tony.
The author’s note at the back was very interesting as she shares the inspiration for this book.
Daniel is a professional motor-cross stunt rider who wakes up in Iowa thinking he was supposed to be in California after finishing a show. Daniel is panicking because he is supposed to pick up his younger brother from a camp in San Francisco in three days.
He sees an old girlfriend named Jolene and enlists her help to get to San Francisco since Daniel doesn’t seem to be able to interact with every person he crosses paths with. Jolene brings along Brent who is more of a mentor and seems quite possessive of Jolene.
As the three make their way to California, they come in contact with desperate people who feel like they have no options.
Daniel also begins to remember what has happened to him and feels a sense of desperation to make sure his brother isn’t abandoned.
Lots of complicated characters, combined with a serious subject matter, and the paranormal make this a fantastic read.
I have to give this a 4. The writing was far too descriptive for my taste, but it wasn't enough to cause me to abandon it. I picked it up on a whim, despite the cover design, and I'm glad I did, because even though it was a bit misery-p0rn-y, it was surprisingly compelling. The story was relatively straightforward and at least two of the twists were easy to spot right from the start, but that didn't stop it from being very hard to put down. I was never quiiiite sure where it was headed. The worldbuilding was pretty solid and the treatment of the supernatural was consistent. The characters were easy to root for and feel invested in. The one thing, though, is that the scenes of child neglect and abuse are... a lot. It made me viscerally angry. The mother character was infuriating, and the fact that she learned absolutely nothing made me want to throttle her myself. I won't harp on, but just, if child abuse is dealbreaker for you, you'll want to skip it. It does veer into misery lit territory sometimes. The other plotline, with the mysterious suicides, was well constructed, tense and entertaining, and the way it tied into the main character's journey was really well done. Even though I wasn't 100% sold on the ending, it was a solidly good story and I'm glad I gave it a shot.
This book is a bit dark and has things in it which are really very sad including quite a bit about suicide which ought to have a trigger warning especially the book might appeal to teenage readers with its romantic theme and young main characters. It is a ghost story about Daniel a young man who doesn’t know that he has died in a horrible motorcycle crash but has come back as a ghost and is trying to contact his family especially his little brother. Most people can’t see him but he meets an old girlfriend who can because she is a bit psychic and her new boyfriend who also can for reasons that I won’t give away. A few other people can see him but they are mostly people who are on the verge of suicide and other people who are also dead but don’t know it. The relationship between the main character and his little brother is very beautifully done as they are from an abusive home and have gone through a lot but Daniel always tried to protect him even when he had to leave home to become a motorcycle stunt rider which is a dangerous job but one he loved and the only way he could escape. The story is complicated and when you get to the end you can see that it’s also very clever. It begins and ends with whales which is what the title refers to and it is a beautiful book with a beautiful ending which made me cry but in a good way.
What a great story in The Beached Ones by Colleen M. Story. The characters had a lot of depth, and were very realistic. This author has a great imagination and I'm glad it's being shared with stories. The story brings in the believable, even if almost impossible. I haven't read stories from this author before, but this one was very interesting, and intriguing. A bit of suspense, supernatural, and a chaotic journey follow Daniel on his hunt for his brother, who he knows he must save. He survived, so his brother needs to as well. The backstory fits his present story and shows how driven he is, and more apt to take risks. This author is a great storyteller. This story was very unpredictable. This is a totally inspirational title. Daniel does his best to overcome very unique obstacles, to find his brother and figure out why his world some how, disappeared. It's a great story to follow and try to figure out what will happen next. This author's characters develop and interacts well with the other characters. I have fast become a big fan of Story. I hope to read more books by this author. The Beached Ones is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book and give my honest and unbiased review. The beached ones by Collen M Story is an intriguing novel filled with immense emotions. This book deals with sensitive content like death, suicide, domestic violence, child abuse, parental issues. ( If you are a sensitive person this book is not for you) But if you wish to see the other side of life and are able to handle it, then this book is must read for you.
Daniel wakes up on a beach at LA, totally unaware as to how he happened to reach there, the only thing he remembers is his motorcycle stunt show. Daniel wants to pick up his younger brother from San Francisco's summer camp, Daniel's love for his brother and the need he feels to rescue him from the toxic family and home he grew in; is the main theme of the novel.
Daniel unexpectedly finds himself in lowa, he realises no one can hear or see him except his girlfriend. ( I had many questions here as to how a dead man can be alive but as I read further, I found the answers. No spoilers intended)
The novel deals with subject of suicide and questions on life and death. The final chapter is of hope. Hence, the author has shown hope to all it's readers at end of the tunnel. No matter how tenebrous life is, there is hope for light.

Blurb
He came back, determined to keep his promise.
Daniel and his younger brother grew up in an abusive home. Daniel escaped. Now an established stunt rider, he intends to go back to rescue his brother. But then one jump goes horribly wrong . . .
He recovers to find himself in Iowa, unscathed, yet his life has drastically changed. His best friend won’t answer his calls. Even his girlfriend is hiding something. Increasingly terrified, he clings to the one thing he knows: He must pick up his brother in San Francisco. In five days.
From the isolating fields of Iowa to the crowded streets of San Francisco, Daniel must fight his way through a fog of disjointed memories and supernatural encounters to face the truth and pay a debt he didn’t know he owed.
My Opinion
This is not a simple book to read. Daniel wakes up following an accident where his motorbike stunt has gone wrong - he has no memory of what happened. All he knows is that he had to pick his brother up in five days. This is an unusual plot, that was enjoyable but I struggled to follow.
The Beached Ones is a powerful story that will touch your heart – it will make you want to cry, to laugh and pause.
From the get go, you can tell something is not quite right as Daniel goes through several experiences that make you pause but it was not until he meets an old flame (plus an article encounter) that we realize Daniel has actually passed away. You can imagine his shock and disbelief (not to mention those feelings of someone who loved him!).
The story is told with flashbacks as Daniel, while not remembering much else, knows that he must get to his younger brother with the help of Jolene (his old flame). We are witness in these flashbacks to a difficult and abusive childhood and the love that Daniel has for his brother (this is a powerful bond between siblings) and to the great lengths he goes to, in order to protect him.
This story was powerful – it moved me to tears many times and it also forces you to stop and reflect (I love novels like this!). It explores so many topics – the bonds between siblings, grief, and has an ending that will shock you. It is a definite must read novel!
The Beached Ones is a remarkable and beautifully written exploration of love and loss, friendship, family, damnation, redemption. Daniel, who has died whilst taking part in a motorbike stunt show, wakes up in a world that is familiar and yet different. He does not know that he is dead, cannot understand why most people ignore him. He is driven by a burning imperative: in a couple of days time, he has to pick up his little brother from a summer camp in San Francisco.
Much of the book is a dreamlike journey towards that end, full of disconnected incident, obstacles, frustrations and yearning. Interspersed are flashbacks of memory, through which the terrible truth of Daniel’s story is not only revealed to the reader but confronted by Daniel himself. In counterpoint to this, there is deepening but troubled relationship with an ex-girlfriend, one of the few people who can see him in his ghostly state. Supernatural components are important but not overdone. There are themes of suicide and the book may be an unwise choice for vulnerable readers, but it is ultimately a brave, redemptive and life-affirming story, both haunting and memorable.
The Beached Ones by Colleen M. Story is an exciting adventure, following Daniel as he tries to cope with what seems to be the end of his life. Having a terrible accident, he suddenly wakes up in a strange place with no memory of how he got there. An old flame and her boyfriend travel with him as he tries to reach his little brother in time to pick him up for a summer visit.
The Beached ones by Colleen M. Story is a great story, though it covers some tough topics. So if you are sensitive to death, suicide, domestic violence, child neglect, or have issues with your mother, this is probably not the story for you. However, for those who can enjoy the story and even the darker aspects of what they are, you are in for a fantastic treat. With well-rounded and realistic characters dealing with real, though supernaturally charged, issues the author has made it easy to relate to the characters. The story itself floats along at a comfortable pace, giving you just enough action throughout the book to keep you turning the pages.
This is a must-read for anyone who wants to touch the other side for a little bit. Pick up this novel and you will enjoy it.
