'The same Christmas wish has haunted Emily Nicholls for years — to have a family of her own. But six years of marriage resulted in no children, and the widowed Emily now cares for others as a governess. She loves her work, and it allows her to care for her parents who can no longer support themselves. But it does not quite fill the hole in her heart.

Lord Charles Blythe, Earl of Doverton, absolutely must produce an heir to prevent his loathsome cousin or the man's obnoxious son from inheriting. Since the death of his wife, however, Charles has no desire to wed any of the young, empty-headed women that society thrusts at him.

When Charles impulsively tells his cousin he is to marry, he chooses the first woman he sees in the crowd at a ball. Shocked to find out she’s a governess, he nevertheless convinces her to join his family for Christmas to participate in the charade. They must fight their attraction, however, for Charles needs a son, the one thing Emily knows she cannot give him.

Is there any chance for their Christmas wishes to come true?'

I really liked Emily's character and her connection with Margaret. Such a quiet and reserved little girl, I was happy to see Emily bring her out of her shell and extend a little trust in her father's attempts to repair their relationship. More than anything I was rooting for a happy family for Margaret.

Charles is very easily pushed around by his cousin into constructing a fake engagement, the only problem is he doesn't find an ally to pull off this charade first. Instead he points someone out of a crowd and relies on her shock to prevent the truth from coming out. Emily is taken quite by surprise and not keen on being pulled into this deception. I completely understood Charles' desire to save face in front of his cousin Edward and protect his tenants from him and his son, Thaddeus. They were such arrogant creeps, they last thing they need is something to validate their feelings of elitism.

I found the solution to the problem to be a little hard to believe. For one, I'm not quite clear on the timeline for when Margaret's mother is supposed to have seen the paper regarding the estate that Charles' father changed. She questioned him about it and everyone kept it from Charles, so I'm assuming it was after the estrangement between the two. Was she living with his father with the Margaret, poisoning her mind against him while he lived elsewhere? It all just seemed a little forced to resolve the tension of the plot. I's also pretty sure that it wouldn't have been that easy to change who can inherit the title and estate, which is controlled by the crown. If it were just that easy, then that also means that it woud have been this easy the entire time that Charles was filled with angst over this matter.

This was the first book I've read by Ellie St. Clair. I enjoyed it and will look for other books by this author to read in the future.

Emily Nicholls married her best friend James but six years of marriage resulted in no children, and the widowed Emily now cares for others as a governess. She loves her work, and it allows her to care for her parents who can no longer support themselves. Lord Charles Blythe, Earl of Doverton, absolutely must produce an heir to prevent his loathsome cousin Edward or the man's obnoxious son Thaddeus from inheriting. Since the death of his wife, however, Charles has no desire to wed any of the young, empty-headed women that society thrusts at him. Shocked to find out she’s a governess, he nevertheless convinces her to join his family for Christmas to participate in the charade. Charles loves his daughter Margaret but his wife poisoned her against him.
A lovely Christmas story with a fake engagement of two people both widowed & in their thirties. They come from very different backgrounds but neither can deny their attraction. I loved both Charles & Emily. He was the upright fairly dour Earl & she the loving caring governess who immediately bonded with Margaret & was determined to bring father & daughter together, the scone making was so very heart warming. I read this well written book in an afternoon, I was captivated from the first page & held until the last.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

A delightful, heartwarming story that shows there is still hope for those who most need it. Two souls meeting by a strange quirk of fate, or maybe you could say pride, as it pertains to Charles, Lord Doverton. Speaking with his odious cousin, who could not wait to inherit Charles' title and money due to Charles not having a male heir, he boasted he was to be married and grabbed the lady walking past in the ballroom. Really? Of yes, a fortuitous happening! Emily was the governess to the couple who were hosting the ball!
Well, not to tell you the entire story (although I truly would love to because it was perfect!) Emily was persuaded to spend time at his estate during Christmas pretending they were engaged. Little did she know she would be the angel that was needed!
Charles was such a reserved man, due to circumstances and upbringing. While Emily was all that was good and no nonsense... The journey to their happy ending was worth the wait and I can only say, it brought a sigh and smile I could not contain!! Perfect!

I found this a really good book. Emily is a really strong character. She is so loving and giving especially at Christmas time. Charles brings her into his home and makes him and his daughter's Christmas. This is what the spirit of Christmas means.

I love reading Ellie St Clair's books because the characters are real life people with problems that one can understand. This lovely Christmas story is other great read.
Emily Nicholls has wanted the same thing most of her life a family of her own. After a six year marriage to a young man she grew up with and were friends. They married not because there was a great love between them but because neither had found anyone else. Horrid reason to wed.
Even after all that time she had no children, so now she a governess to other peoples children and she loves her job.
Lord Charles Blythe, Earl of Doverton needs a heir. He must find a women he can like and get along well enough to wed her and hope for a son so his rotten cousin and his even worst son does not inherit all. He has little hope of pulling this off as the young ladies who are looking to marry are
silly, loud and he wants nothing to do with them. He has had a love-less marriage to an evil women who keep his daughter from him. Now they are like strangers.
When he allows his cousin, Edward to push him into saying he has a bride to be he grabs the first women he sees and says she is his soon-to -be-bride!
Poor Emily she has no idea that her life will be changed forever and neither did Charles.
Charles talks Emily into the charade of pretending to be his bride for the Christmas time with his family and his daughter. Emily falls in love with Margaret almost at once and finds she is a very
sad and lonely little girl who thinks her father hates her. Her late mother has lied to her all her life.
Charles, Emily, and Margaret will soon learn what it really important and with some Christmas magic may just get their Happy Ever After.
Don't miss this Great Christmas store, it will be one I read year after year..
I received and ARC from the author and would like to thank her.
I am giving my honest opinion.

When governess Emily heads into the ballroom during her employers’ party to fetch the doll of one of the children she takes care of, she never thought her whole life would change. Stopped by a couple of men, she’s informed that she’s the fiancé of one of the men.
Lord Charles Blythe shocked himself when he grabbed the arm of the passing woman and informed his cousin that he was getting married to her. Of course, his cousin Edward doesn’t believe him. Edward and his son Thaddeus are next in line for Charles’ title if he doesn’t produce a male heir. Edward of course knows this and uses every opportunity to slyly point that out to Charles. After the stranger flees, Charles follows her and discovers that the woman he selected to be his new “bride” is none other than the governess to Lord and Lady Coningsby, his host for the evening. When Charles asks Emily to pretend to be his fiancé, she agrees. After all the money she will be paid is enough to set her family up for a while.
Spending the Christmas holiday away from her family wasn’t something that Emily looked forward to, but it was for the good for her family. With her father sickly, the family depends on the salaries that Emily and her sister Teresa earns. This money from Lord Blythe will really help her family out and for that reason alone Emily agrees.
Will Emily be able to handle the Christmas holidays with Lord Blythe, his daughter Margaret, and his cousins and their families? Will she be able to hide the fact that she’s a mere governess and not really Lord Blythe’s fiancé? Will her dearest Christmas wish actually come true?
Y’all, if you love Regency Romance, I definitely recommend Ms. St. Clair. I love her writing, her characters, her stories. I love the romance, the descriptions, the characters. I can’t wait to read another story by this author.

I love Ellie St. Clair's books, the stories are great but the characters she creates are so loving & you really do want to be a part of their lives. This book was no different except for one extra thing, a Christmas Wish was Granted & it made for an even greater ending.

Charles Blythe, Earl of Doverton was a stern, handsome man who was a stranger to his eight year old daughter, Lady Margaret. He & his wife had been living separate lives, her & Margaret in the country estate & he was in London - his wife wanted nothing to do with him, she turned Margaret against him & refused to let him see her. Now his wife had died & he needed to find a way back to his daughter. Mrs. Nicholls (Emily) is a lovely, kind & happy governess who is working to help her family with expenses after her father, a barrister, has fallen ill. Charles & Emily meet at her employer's ball when she is searching for a doll left in the ballroom by one her charges & an awkward situation with his cousin (who will inherit the earldom since Charles doesn't have a son) finds her in a faux betrothal.

All of the fun starts her when she goes to masquerade as Charles' betrothed & convince his family of the upcoming marriage. Lady Margaret pulls at your heart strings as she has been through so much at such a young age. Charles & Emily get their HEA but the journey is a romantic one with his horrible family members & her wonderful family members.

When I finished the last page, I felt disappointed. I did not want it to end. Such a heart filled holiday romance started out of pride and was supposed to have been followed through as a ruse. I absolutely adored the main characters. Such kindness, such feeling, such honesty, such patience and tolerance. At times this tore at my heart when the spirit of Christmas was not being observed in one home but was in another home. As the lead female character brought her traditions of Christmas to the straitlaced home, she found acceptance by few. The relationships in the story were varied, complex, hostile, interesting and well written. I was so happy at the revelation revealed at the end. It could not have ended on a more positive note. A wonderful Christmas romance. A must read and I highly recommend it.

Can a childless widowed governess and an widowed Earl who feels he needs to marry to produce an heir so his nasty cousin doesn't inherit his title find love? It started as a charade to get his gloating cousin off his back about the inheritance, but the more time Charles and his emotionally distance young daughter Margaret spend with with Emily, the happier and closer they feel until they wonder if they can imagine life without her? I loved young Margaret who held herself off from her father and everyone else because she had been hurt, but Emily finds a way to connect to her and break through her silence. Charles' relatives were really stuck up and dastardly and I was so happy to see them get their comeuppance in the end. This was a nice Christmas Regency romance.

Emily is a governess of one of Charles friend just in the ballroom to retrieve a lost doll! Talking about being in the right place at the right time! Charles grabs her hand and announces they are betrothed!!?! Emily is sure he is mentally ill! He chases after her and invites her to his home for Christmas and he will pay her! Emily needs the money to help her elderly parents! She accepts and she turns his life upside down!! She helps bridge the relationship between Charles and his daughter Margaret and us able to sooth his fears of rascal loathsome cousin who plans to inherit! Charles falls for Emily but she believes she is barren!?? That question is nor answered but so many others are! What wonderful characters! Loved it!!!

Lovely Christmas story! Charles, a widower and the Earl of Doverton, in a moment of pique, declares he is betrothed to Emily, a widow and the governess of the family who is hosting the house party that he is attending. She has compassion on him and goes along with it for the moment. His cousin, who doesn't believe it, threatens to make a fool of Charles to his family. Charles convinces Emily to come to his home for Christmas and pose as his betrothed, promising to pay her for her time and help her family. She concedes.

Emily is a delight and helps Charles to relax and open up. She meets his daughter and draws her out of her shell. Both the H and h are in their 30's. A happy, feel good truly Christmas story with a dreamy proposal and an HEA.

I love Christmas stories and this one did not disappoint. I enjoyed the characters, the humor, tensions, and development of characters. Emily Nicholls for years has wanted a child and after six years of marriage and no children she believes she is unable to have children. After the death of her husband she becomes a governess. When Lord Charles Bkythe, Earl of Doverton, impulsively tells his cousin he is engaged and picks Emily their delightful story begins. Although, there is an attraction Emily cannot provide Lord Charles with the son he needs as his heir. A very fun, fast paced, Christmas story of second chances. I enjoyed this story very much and think you will to.

A steamy story. Emily is the widowed daughter of a barrister who has lost his money when the local bank failed. She works as a governess and is suddenly asked to be a faux fiancée over Christmas for a widowed Earl Charles, who doesn’t get one with his cousins, nor with his young daughter. I liked Emily who has a caring no nonsense pragmatic approach to life. Charles was alright, but I could not understand as his cousins were so awful why he did not just put them on their place - he’s an Earl he needed to act like one and be firm with them. Also not sure why he wasn’t trying more with his daughter. Overall I liked this.

This is a complex tale intricately woven. Love growing where no hope exists. Lord Doverton needs a son and heir because the current heir to his title, is his horrid cousin and his obnoxious son, Thaddeus. Mrs Nicholls, a widowed governess masquerades as the betrothed to Lord Doverton. Will this buy him the time to find a wife? Anything to take the smug look off his cousin!
Really enjoyed the humanity in this story. Lovely characters. Heartwarming tale.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Enjoyable Read

Another lovely Christmas story by Ellie St Clair. The main characters Emily Nichols and Charles (Lord Doverton) were endearing, with Charles desperately trying to do his duty as guardian of the Earldom against his obnoxious cousins, whilst Emily a widow who loved children and longed for her own family, tried to help Charles achieve his goal, whilst falling in love with both him and his daughter, and falling foul of the spiteful cousins. A very sweet read and made more pleasant by the reference to Christmas.
I would thoroughly recommend this book.

This book “Her Christmas Wish” was a wish come true. It is about Emily who is a widow, a governess and who always wanted a family of her own and Charles who is an Earl, a widow, a father and who needs an heir, so his horrible uncle or cousin do not inherit. This book was a nice Christmas love story of when Charles and Emily meet and spend the holiday together. It was written so well you will fall in love with Emily, Charles and Margaret. I really enjoy Ellie St. Clair’s books.

What started out as a ruse turns into a HEA. Charles needs a pretend fiancé and Emily just happens by when he announced his engagement. He convinces her to go along with the ruse and he will pay her 100 pounds to help her family. As time goes by, they fall in love but for certain reasons they can not marry. This is a sweet love story that is a wonderful read and appropriate for any age group. I would recommend this book as a wonderful love story.

I would like to thank the author for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Emily is widowed and working as a governess to support her family, when the Earl of Doverton picks her to be a stand in fiance. Charles, Earl of Doverton needs a wife in order to get himself the long awaited heir and to put his family off. Both of them wish for a family and a chance at love. Can Emily get everything her heart desires with Charles and his daughter, at christmas?
