Can she learn (and thwart) their cutthroat ways so that she may claim her rightful throne?
just finished season 1 AND IM SCREAMING IN AWE!!! im surprised that this webcomic doesn't have a lot of ratings (and no reviews) yet because IT'S SO GOOD. set in a world with bloody court politics, the spirit queen is an engaging read that is rife with plot twists that will make your heart stop for a few beats. each character here does not shy away from their desire to obtain power. you cannot trust anybody because they're all two-faced individuals who will stop at nothing to rise in the court hierarchy. themes such as freedom and oppression are also talked about in this webcomic and im looking forward to see how they will be further highlighted in the next season. it also has fantasy elements but so far this aspect in the story is still shrouded in mystery. i really love how there are so many layers to this webcomic and there's always something new that will keep your attention.
i know im rambling BUT THERE'S SO MUCH TO UNPACK AND I ONLY HAVE TWO BRAINCELLS. my point is: READ THIS WEBCOMIC NOW. the art is god tier and the story is commendable in its complexity. i hope the next season doesn't disappoint because the first one really knocked all my expectations out of the park.
I don’t usually add the webtoons I read to Goodreads but this one stood out among the others. Although I had my doubts about the ml, our mc more than made up for it.
The ending was really beautiful and I’m not mad about it, especially the last two to three chapters made it worth reading through all the betrayal, plot twists and slight confusion
Edit - I think the thing I really appreciated about this webtoon was how they didn’t treat women harem drama as catty fighting and portrayed it how it actually was: a fight for survival. Whether the violence was truly necessary is a debate, but I’m glad that not all the women were villains and some got their redemption once we understood the reasons behind their actions. We should have got more of Saya and the extended circle as well as that part was a little rushed but I was desperate to finish at that point. The translation I read was really good as well.
the spirit queen is actually one of the best manhua's i have read this year and probably ever. i haven't read a lot of manhua or chinese novels/light novels so i don't have a lot of stuff to compare this with. but most historical manhua's i've read always have some kind of nod to the current era, and i find it annoying. it takes me away from the experience of reading a historical period, even if it's made up. i do watch a lot of chinese historical and costume dramas so i would say i have a few references. what particularly amazes me is the main character. she stayed true to her cause until the end and didn't let any emotion whatsoever sway her. often times we always find main characters, especially female characters (i do think this is the fault of writers and not a universal flaw as women with unpredictable hormones, please do better writers!), doing things out of character. whatever she does is very believable, and that's why i kept rooting for her even though she is sometimes frustrating. all the character are actually really great. even the protagonists are well-written. their motivations are easy to understand. it's also just so well-written and paced. it's a fast-paced manhua, but it wasn't that fast that you miss out on a lot of details. i even feel like every chapter there's always important details, but it wasn't info-dumping. i honestly admire the pacing the most, then the characters. overall, this is just so good and well-written. the illustration is really good too. the style of it fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the book. this is a must read if you like chinese historical/costume dramas.
whenever i read manhuas, they're usually either a) romcom like tamen de gushi or secret love, or b) those really cliche and poorly written CEO romance, or c) a chinese historical romance that is repetitive and gets dragged on and on, ruining the story
but this one? 😭 i love this manhua to bits so so much. i love how it's such a cruel place and you can see how the characters are forced to act like so. the intrigue in trying to find out what happened to ling zhi's spirit clan then finally finding out about it in the end. this heinous yet interesting empress dowager that wishes nothing but to kill everyone, then learning why she became like that. and finally the right mix of romance in between it all. IT'S SO GOOD
i love love love how every character are truly forced to lose something along the way of the story, be it small or big. since that feels real and alive
idk what else to say, i love the ending, the art, this story, and esp the female lead. she was amazing and the best and no matter what happened and how many years passed, i never forgot how memorable her first appearance to me was then seeing now how she evolved throughout the series
