March 2022. Twenty-three-year-old Haley Wolfe is visiting Florida from New York, staying in the small town of Englewood to help her ailing 90-year-old grandmother. Haley is missing out on being with her friends over in Miami Beach for spring break, and she is both frustrated and dismayed with having to sort out her grandmother’s waning finances. One evening Haley heads to a popular waterfront tiki bar on Manasota Key. She meets Sean, a good-looking, charming local who invites her out on his boat the following evening. Haley accepts and finds herself aboard an opulent yacht where she is wooed with wine and music anchored out in the Gulf of Mexico. The evening takes an abrupt turn when Sean’s friend arrives, and Haley finds herself in a predicament she might not walk away from without permanent physical and psychological scars . . .
Todd Cameron was raised in a small town, far from the ocean and tropical latitudes. His early pursuits were athletic before an injury finally settled him down to focus on writing—a yearning he has had since childhood. His debut novel, Snowblind, published in 2021 and became a bestseller on Amazon. He has since founded Shark Island Press and published three more novels, Hurricane Hole, Devilfish Key, and Twisted Straits.
Influenced heavily by nautical adventure novels and a passion for sharks, Todd acquired his scuba certification on his 17th birthday at Fathom Five National Marine Park in Tobermory, Ontario, the freshwater diving capital of the world. Shortly thereafter he ventured south for an inaugural shark dive in The Bahamas. The experience was a life-changing dream come true—he was hooked!
As a former elite athlete Todd competed successfully in open water swimming in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the Caribbean, with sponsorships from Arena Swimwear and Orca Wetsuits. He completed a 1430-mile (2300km) swim challenge to raise awareness for sharks, swimming the same distance as the Great Barrier Reef. He was the first person to swim the 9-mile (14.5km) channel between Whitsunday Island and Hamilton Island in Queensland, Australia. He retired from competitive swimming on a high note, placing first overall back-to-back in his final three races.
Todd, his wife Valerie, and their daughter Isla, divide their time between New York and Florida.
Good novella. I enjoyed the references to places in my residential area, as I live in a little community a couple of miles from Englewood. Wish I had read Midnight Pass before reading Devilfish Key.
Todd Cameron is becoming a "WTF" author. Let me clarify that in addition to the usual meaning of this acronym, Cameron is the Welcome to Florida author; his first novel was the impressive Snowblind, which took the reader through the Gulf as well as the swamps of Florida to the frigid territory in Antarctica. His second effort is the novella "Midnight Pass."
Midnight Pass is the story of Haley Wolfe, a young New York university student who has come to Florida to help out her grandmother's relocation woes. Taking a break, she has a drink at a local bar, meeting the handsome and engaging Sean, who invites her during their long conversation to a ride on his boat the next night.
Haley agrees and meets Sean the next night; the boat turns out to be the sixty-one foot yacht Midnight Pass, certainly impressive to anyone, including young Haley, who is becoming more and more interested in Sean as they pull away from the shore.
The reader must be thinking - ah! romance! - but then Cameron tugs the line and you find yourself hooked into a far darker story. It seems that beneath the skin of the Gulf beats a dark heart, and Cameron is not hesitant to give the reader a view.
Without spoilers, Haley finds herself facing the twisted intentions of her paramour, and author Todd Cameron takes the reader on a fast paced, page-turning journey yet again.
This was an amazing quick read. I enjoyed the dark undertones in a Florida setting and many emotional twists and turns. From wonder to shock, Cameron catches it all in this novella.
I loved that this short read took place in my hometown and I could picture the locations discussed. I look forward to more books by Todd and his great descriptive writing.
A Page Turner! After reading this author's new novel,"Snow Blind", which I enjoyed immensely, I decided to try his novella, "Midnight Pass" and found it had the same qualities. I could not put it down and was compelled to finish it in one go. Love the taste of Florida Noir and Todd weaves a tale with it that leaves you hungry for more, with each page you turn. Love his work!
