My Rival, the King

Rate this book
Book 2 in My Brother the King
For three years, the shepherd warrior David has been like a son to the king he’ll eventually replace. But Saul’s jealous fury burns out of control, branding David a traitor and forcing him to flee for his life. Taking refuge in the cave-scarred wilds of Judah, the young giant-killer is joined by The Mighty, a fugitive resistance group hoping to end Saul’s reign. Pursued by the king all over Israel, David grapples with the thorn in his anointing, wondering if his heart will survive the path to the throne. With a very different kind of flock depending on him now, is it right for him to persist in his vow to spare Saul?

Still honor-bound to the brother he loves and the king he no longer trusts, Saul’s son Jonathan agonizes over how to protect his wife and child from the disaster his father is inviting. Who else will have to die before David can rule?

Drawn by promises that make their hearts bleed, David and Jonathan face a battle fiercer than any Philistine’s hatred. Will their faith be strong enough to endure the wounds of weapons forged by family? Will their honor withstand the flames of what they’ll have to sacrifice for Israel’s future? Does Yahweh really want a broken king?

THIS. THIS BOOK. THIS SERIES. This is the book (really this series) that I have been looking for!
For years! I have been looking for a book (or series) about David and his rise to power, specifically, his time on the run from Saul before he became King of Israel.
This book delivered! It takes you through the years he is on the run and fabulously illustrates and imagines all the gaps between the verses and stories we have in the Bible.
I also loved how she continued to weave Jonathan's story into this book. His struggle to stay with his father the king, or go to David; and how to support David and his father and still stay true to God.

Jubilee Lipsey has written the second novel in this series with incredibly well balanced tension. Her words allow you to experience the emotion Jonathan feels as he roots for David's rising kingdom while still supporting his father's failing kingdom. Jonathan has hope that David will succeed and still rides into battle with Saul. David never seeks Saul's harm or dishonors him in any way. Reading Lipsey's books make you feel like you are in the story! This book made me laugh and cry and moved me towards incredible respect for two of the Bibles most beloved characters!

How Does Prince Jonathan's and David's Covenant Brotherhood Change with Time?

Isreal's 1st King, Saul's unreasonable jealousy of David's successes, leds him to repeatedly attempt to kill David. So David has to flee the Palace. That's where Jubilee Lipsey's "My Rival, The King" begins.

What happens to David in this oppressive time? Does he lose all his hope in God, and flee his anointing? What happens to Jonathan during this time? I Highly Recommend You 📖 this Outstanding, Poignant, Bible-Based, Inspirational 📗,

A stirring sequel to My Brother, The King. The action flows almost seamlessly from that of the first book. And, like the first book, it draws readers right into the shoes of the biblical characters, challenging us to reflect on their stories in fresh ways.
This book gives readers a compelling, firsthand look at God’s faithfulness in difficult times, and the power of godly friendship to inspire perseverance and renew hope in impossible situations.

This book was well written and the story well told.

It was not the book for me, however, and I loaded it on my Kindle through KU thinking it was a fictional story, but not one out of the bible. Yes, I am intrigued by David, but I don't read fiction based on the bible, so I'll give it four stars for the writing and end there. This book came to me via Paper Raven Books as an ARC

Wonderful read.

I can't wait for the third book! It was so touching to read from the point of view of what may be going through the minds of David and Jonathan. Yet, knowing the result was sad this side of heaven, but seeing Yahweh's providence. He is the Rock!
