An honest account of living and working during turbulent times in South Africa. There are fascinating accounts of the author's experiences during student riots and unrest while, at the same time, she had an excellent relationship with her choir and staff members. She moved to a Big Five Game Reserve and relates entertaining facts and stories about those years in an easy-to-read way.
A very true description of the South Africa I knew
I was not sure if I was going to enjoy this book as I know the country so well. I enjoyed Elsa's book and easy style. A very honest description of a beautiful but troubled country. Very true to the South African idiom e.g. a "panel beater" is a body shop in North America. A worth while read.
Life was never dull according to Elsa van der Bly in this book. Since we had lived in Africa 8 years, two in South Africa , working at the American International School during 1990 - 1992, the book overlaps the time we lived there. Thank you Elsa for bringing back good memories of our time there.

A great memoir of Elsa van Derek Byl of life in South Africa during apartheid and the trials to democracy. This book transported me to South Africa through her stories. What a adventurous life she has lived.
