Why is it that thieves and mages never mix? Probably because thieves remind mages too much of themselves.
A young female thief is working to help her crew stay alive in Waypoint, a city that exists on the precipice of humanity to one side and in the shadows of Ziammotienth on the other.
Also called Tolan’s Doom, the mountain torn asunder by a dragon—if you believe in myths.
Many an adventurer calls Waypoint the only bastion of civilization before returning to the remains of the once-great half-elven city’s remains from which to strike into the darkness underground.
Most do not return.
Kaylin has no intention of heading to the mountain’s grip. But will she be able to evade its grasp?
Is Ziammotienth just a story of legends and minstrels or much more? Commerce, adventure, and intrigue swirl around the young thief as she fights her way into a far larger world than she had expected to experience.
While the parts I got to read where rather well-written, I dropped this book for four main reasons.
1. I tend to avoid books with kids as MC because most times, the voices they are given don't match their age, and that just pulls me out of immersion. I can't relate.
2. I found the magic system simply ridiculous.
3. In general, magic academy is big no-no for me. I've yet to read a book that avoids the dreadful clichés it evokes (a book that goes beyond the first class/subject).
4. The chapter where MC is cornered into going to said magic school was a mess of incoherence and convenience. That was just way too juvenile for me.
I wanted to like this but it reads too young for my taste and I don't care about these characters.
Kids as MC is something that doesn't appeal to me, but when they're supposedly so good at what they do and survive in this dark world just to pull the most ridiculous moves and have shitty dialogues in the book... I can't get into it.
This book just couldn't decide what story it wanted to tell. Plot/Setting changed 3 different times and found myself reading it just to finish it the last 1/3 of the book.
What can I say that I haven't already said about Mr. Anderle's writing? It has awesome characters, well planned out plot lines, impressive world-building, is expertly editted, etc. It has only 1 misspelled word: the sound used to stop a horse is spelled whoa. Sound it out: wh - oa. (Remember the rhyme? When two vowels go walking, the first one says its name!) There are exceptions, such as when a is paired with h, as in ah. That's the sound you make after your first sip of great coffee. So if you put it with "wo" (which sounds a bit like the horse stopping sound), you get a two syllable word: "wo - ah" which rhymes with the name Noah. So fix your spellcheck, and remember this basic mnemonic. Dear Mother! Its only a 4 letter word... Super rare 9/10 unicorns! Highly recommended to buy or borrow. 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄
Apart from toiling at his craft for 1000's of hours, he obviously has an advantage. Has he secretly got a big sack of pixie dust that he uses, is he part wizard? You decide. Whatever it is it works.
If you enjoy the genre's he; along with his trusty cohort of collaborative writer's produce then you can't go wrong reading the results of their excellent offerings. If you follow Michael and his friends keep reading. If they are new to you dive in you have a lot of catching up to do!
I read 'Death Becomes Her' almost 3 years ago and have been having a blast ever since, reading in excess of 200 books a year. The Brownstone, Zoo, Skaar series etc. etc. and my too read list still stretches ahead of me.
Keep up the good work Michael, I'm off to open book 2 of the Ziammotienth saga.
I've missed classic fantasy this was a glorious fulfillment for my need of something
Loved the classic dragon fantasy magic aspects.... So happy to see there's a sequel I can dig into now and not months from now. So many of the current stuff being written is litRPG which I don't mind, but it's just not the same as a classic dragon and sorcerer style fantasy book. And I love the Urban and post-apocalyptic work as well. Just miss when I was young and got into Anne McCaffrey and so many other authors that wrote similar stories that were just fun. I remember my first big book was magician apprentice by Raymond Feist and getting back to some good old fashioned fantasy is really nice.
Amazon is clueless and careless about recommendations to their Kindle Unlimited readers.
The first thing I do after downloading a book is use the Search feature for several crude words. (Sorry, but if I put those words in this review it would not meet Amazon "standards" and the review would be REJECTED. Fact. )
Well, guess what. "Myth of the Dragon book1" by Michael Anderle is full of such potty mouth. Why Amazon continues to recommend such books to me is inexplicable. I've read every day for 227 weeks in a row according to Reading Insights. (87 titles in 2022.) They could know what I read - or do NOT read- if they tried.
I quite liked this YA adventure fantasy. It's a bit long, and could have been tightened places, but it works. # parts for young Kaylin, who starts out as a thief trying to keep a ragtag batch of orphans safe and fed, then Kaylin, the student mage, and lastly Kaylin the scavenger trying to search a ruined and monster filled city for Elvish texts and enough stuff of value to keep herself housed and fed. During the last portion, she acquires a tiny dragon as friend, ally, and guide. It's a long book, and and despite the rapid delivery of narrator Emily Beresford, it's still an 18.5 hour listen.
This is a pretty good start to a series. I picked it up because I have read other books from this publisher/author, and liked most of them (though by no means all of them), so I figured it was worth a shot, I mean, after all, it claimed it had dragons, and who can resist a good dragon story. And, I have to say, I really liked the little dragon in this one. I'm most certainly looking forward to more in this series. I mean ... Dragons.
Kaylin has a hard life, but doesn't let it bring her down. She goes through a lot; from living in the streets, to going to a magic academy, to living in a city surrounded but orcs, goblins and worse. Through it all she makes friends and tries to help keep them alive while learning to be a mage. Great storyline and even better characters kept me engrossed in the book and very excited to continue with the series.
This may develop into a decent story, but I really struggled to get into the book, after about a hundred pages I found myself skipping sections hoping it would get a move on. I kept going another hundred or so pages, but the ‘world’ the author had created wasn’t grabbing me and I really wasn’t enjoying the book.
The story of an orphan who became a thief to survive, accidentally learning she can perform magic. Caught robbing a magically secured vault, required to study at and graduate from the Mage Academy, she falls foul of the politics there and has to flee again.
As I read this story I am again amazed at the fact that Mike has an amazing imagination. One on par with Brandon Sanderson. And the author's he partners with are amazing too. I love his heroine's and his twist on the familiar she has I can't wait for the next one....
I could not put it down. Great adventure, a couple of interesting twists. Definitely recommend if you are looking for a book about a plucky youg heroine, her friends, dealing with bullies, luck...lots of luck and of course dragons. Looking forward to the next book...After I finish my homework.
A little slow to start but doing the raised from the street to being someone story in the expected fantasy trope does do that. For all that however the story is easy to follow along with and each stage of her journey keeps you asking what is ahead for our MC. Great start to this new series and one that will surely be a hit.
I am a fan of this author. I was eager to start a new journey with lovable characters. The first quarter of the book was as expected. The middle two quarters were a plod. The last quarter was really good. Can't wait to see what she finds in the lost library. This doesn't sound like the author I am used to. Collaboration??
A brilliant fantasy adventure book. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action. I loved the story arc and all the characters including the non human ones. I look forward to the next one 😀
Characters are believable and great variety of personalities. Story line has different stages and all are interesting and really ( in this fantasy world). Very enjoyable read, looking forward to more.
The book started out boring ,but got way more interesting the more I read . Interesting characters and story. It ended good enough for me to get the next in the series.
Michael has done it again. When I started reading, I wondered where this was leading, with all the twists and turns, but as it progressed it started making sense. Can't wait to read more. This author has spoiled my reading habits.
Surprisingly good. Good characters and lots of action. The magic sort of slowly creeps into the story but is bubbling out by the end. Looking forward to the next.
Michael you've done it again. I'm going to borrow the rest of this series. I really enjoyed this book. You have a great sense and the ability to keep me interested. Thanks again.
I like the layout of the story. It goes from a girl with a mysterious past who becomes a thief from necessity to a future filled with possibilities. I look forward to the future adventures of the thief-mage.
Another wonderful book from Michael. It sucks you in from the first page. There is lots of action and all that Kaylin goes thru has you rooting for her to come out on top for a change.
