This is a beautiful little book full of excellent illustrations from the author’s life and helpful scriptures. It explains the gospel of Jesus Christ and why we do not need to fear death if we know Him. And if we don’t know Him, it explains how we can know Him. We need not fear death when we know the promise of eternal life and what our Saviour has done for us.

More About Living Than Dying

In this provocatively titled short “how-to” book Ray Comfort doesn’t resort to hacks or gimmicks, but rather examines the truth of our fears and doubts and the Truth of the Gospel. It’s not really a “how-to” book in that sense, but a book of comfort (appropriately!) and affirmation. To be sure, I found the book to be more one about living than death. For the confident Christian the inevitable prospect of death is not so foreboding. Yes, we might tremble at the process and possible pain, and we likely aren’t in any hurry to make the transition, but we have a blessed assurance of salvation and a better existence with the Lord because He took away our sins on the cross and defeated death in His Resurrection. This excellent book is short and easy to read in a few sittings or in daily devotional doses. I would lean toward the latter to allow plenty of time for reflection and for the possibility (as I experienced) that some of the chapters have particular relevance to the current chapter of your life. My experience related to the sharing of the Word and the Good News, and Comfort provided me with timely comfort and assurance. An excellent book!

Honestly, it was good. I don’t have an awful lot of words to say to praise or admonish the book. Going into the book, I expected it to be more death-centered. Maybe go into revelations, talk about how to deal with the fear, but it did it in a way I didn’t really think of.

Ray spends the book talking about faith, and how fear is necessary part of life to walk with Jesus. I get where he’s coming from, but in some of the chapters it feels like he didn’t have a solid idea of what he was writing about before he wrote. For example, in the later chapters, almost an entire chapter is dedicated to talking about lust. I didn’t think there was an exact need for that. I wished that the book did more of a deep dive on the act of dying and the stigma that surrounds it in Christianity as a whole.

It wasn’t a bad book though, but I don’t think I’d recommend it for the purpose of someone being afraid of death. It’s more of a general book about sin and God’s everlasting love.

If you've seen any of Ray Comfort's youtube videos where he does his street interviews that pretty much sums up this book. I thought it would be something more specific, but it wasn't. The low rating is because this was nothing new and original from Ray Comfort.

Truth. Hope. Encouragement. Maybe still a little wordy for a short book, but so many great Scripture references and clear explanation of the gospel throughout.
