The events of the novel The Night Reporter take place in Lviv in 1938. Journalist Marko Krylovych, nicknamed the “night reporter” for his nightly coverage of the life of the city’s underbelly, takes on the investigation of the murder of a candidate for president of the city government.

While doing this, he ends up in various love intrigues as well as criminal adventures, sometimes risking his life. Police Commissioner Roman Obukh, who was suspended by administrators from the murder investigation, aids him in an unofficial capacity.

Meanwhile, German, and Soviet spies become involved, and Polish counterintelligence also takes an interest in the investigation. The picturesque and vividly described criminal world of Lviv of that time appears before us – dive bars, batyars, and establishments for women of ill repute. The reader will have to unravel riddle after riddle with the characters against the background of the anxious mood of Lviv’s residents, who are living in anticipation of war.

The Night Reporter is a compelling journey into the world of the enthralling multicultural past of the city.

Written in the hardboiled dialogue style of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, this is a fast moving and exhilarating crime story with a strong emphasis on sense of place and period.

It is set Lviv, which at the time was part of Poland. It was to be invaded by the Nazis the following year, 16 days after the Soviets had invaded. At the time the town’s residents saw the Nazis as some sort to saviours, but that was short-lived. The town’s history, especially in the last hundred years, is enough to fascinate readers, so if Vynnychuk plans follow-ups they would be very welcome.

The plot of the crime part of the novel is nothing special, but the reader is carried along by the brisk pace and the backdrop to which it all pans out. The protagonist, Marko Krylovych, is an investigative journalist who does his research after sunset in the drinking dens of Lviv.

One day in the not too distant future I hope, it will be possible to sit in one of those dens, enjoy a Ukrainian beer, and recall the exploits of Krylovych.

Якщо я все правильно розумію, то це перша книга серії про Марка, нічого репортера, який ну дуже добре і цікаво розслідує злочини. Далі є щетри книги. Класна тут мова написання, Винничуку тут респект. Хотів пару словечок написати файних, як там спілкуються гг, але краще мерщі беріть і читайте цю серію книг, однозначно сподобається. Рекомендую!

Marko uses his skills as an investigative reporter to get to the bottom of the murder of a candidate for president of the city government, especially after he realises that he was used as a pawn to smear the said candidate's name. It was interesting to see Marko using his skills to solve the crime, with support from his suspended commissioner friend. A few more people die, quite brutally infact, before the case is solved which also involves the threat of classified state/military secrets going into the enemies' hands, especially with war looming on the horizon. The ending, however, was anticlimactic... the culprits are caught but not punished accordingly.

Журналістика – це вже чорна справа, бо без інтриг, розслідувань та скандалів не буває. А якщо ти ще й нічний репортер, то точно знаєш про всіх злодюжок, хабарників та мафіозі свого міста. Додаємо дрібку гумору (велииику, це ж Винничук, камон), любовних перипетій, азарту – і вуаля, маємо такого собі Марка. Чоловік з авантюрною вдачею робить з нічого справжню сенсації.

Через викривально-провокаційну статтю, яку витрорив сам Марко, йому «прилітає» купу звинувачень у доведені до самогубства одного чиновника. Однак все набагато складніше, адже невже людина, яка зазіхає на президентське крісло в Львові, здатна так легко розпрощатись із життям через якусь статтю нічного репортера? Загадок значно більше, аніж пояснень. Так і втягується Марко у вир детективного розслідування, яке приведе куди, не зна-куди. Коротше, Винничук як завжди закрутить все, що голова обертом йде. Але ж круто! А ще харизматичні жіночі образи. Без них не було б такого відчуття піднесеності та авантюризму. Непересічні особистості, як-то кажуть.

Окрім сюжету, мені дуже імпонує ця атмосфера старовинного Львова. Як і зараз місто чудове, так і колись було не гірше (я це точно відчуваю!) Ці автентичні вулички з бруківкою, кнайпи, де збирались різні прошарки населення, галицькі крамнички. Оххх, лише через це варто читати «Нічного репортера».

Юрій Винничук – один з тих, хто може вкласти розгорнену приголомшливу історію всього у рамки декількох днів. Проте ці дні протікають як один. Тааак динамічно і карколомно. Автора читаю, і буду читати ще більше.

У повісті описано розслідування афер кандидата на посаду президента міста Львова у часи міжвоєнної Польщі Томашевича. Невдовзі він гине і репортер Крилович разом з комісаром Обухом намагаються розкрити убивство, видане за самогубство. Багато карколомних пригод, файна мова автора. Класичне викриття у щасливому фіналі. Трохи трафаретні персонажі, особливо жіночі. Читалося легко та швидко.

Прецлі, шлюс, легітимація, тарапати – книга наповнена галицькою говіркою по вінця. Багацько з цих слів і виразів я або чула вперше, або ж не знала значення. Але автор це передбачив і в кінці книги є гарненький словничок.
Інші ж слова були дуже навіть рідні, бо або ми їх і зараз використовуємо, або їх любив використовувати мій дідо. Це дозволило ще й трішки поностальгувати з книгою.
Але, безсумнівно, історія набуває неповторного колориту через усі ці «галицизми» та згадки вуличок і місцинок Львова.
Це перший плюс історії. Другий плюс – динаміка. Дуже багато подій, безліч персонажів, переломи сюжету – цікаво спостерігати за розвитком і вгадувати хто, що, куди й навіщо.
Загалом, цікава, насичена історія з багатьма змінними та закрученими пригодами.

Книга вихідного дня, на один раз. Написана смачною львівською ґварою, так само смачно змальоване місто 30-х років. Легка вдача, розважливість та авантюризм головного героя все ж схиляють залишатися в атмосфері історії.
А ось сюжет - не зайшов, багато невиразних персонажів, які не запамʼятовуються, особливо ті, що зʼявляються наприкінці + дуже насичені події і повно подвійних агентів, годі встежити, які між усіма звʼязки.
Якшо не мати якихось надмірних очікувань, то це чудова легка книга, щоб «передихнути» між чимось важким.

Більш за все мене вразив Львів та «жива» мова якою розмовляють персонажі, але інколи було важко зрозуміти про що йдеться («шимон» це улюбленіше підчеплено слово із книги!). Сюжет не дуже накручений і читається легко, події швидко розгортаються, але не дуже зрозуміло як товариство та аукціонери працювали в той час.

Напевно я не дуже ретельно читала інформацію про цю книгу бо я вважала що вона була написана в той час коли відбуваються ці вигадані події. Бо як ще можна пояснити що Марко постійно шляється по сумнівним забігайлівкам з аби ким, пиячить і потрапляє у халепи, але усі жінки так прямо падають йому у ноги мов він Джеймс Бонд? Проти це, Марко порядна людина і я б залюбки почитала ��е щось з ним.

The most interesting thing about this book is its 1938 setting in cosmopolitan Lviv, a city about to have the worst decade ever, with three consecutive nightmare occupations: Soviets, Nazis, then Soviets again (guess they really missed the place).

These soon to be horrors politely lurk offstage while we follow night reporter Marko through a pulpy whodunit in Lviv’s dive bars, sketchy hotels, and streets so seedy they probably needed antibiotics.

I liked it as a boozy tour of the city with laughs. The plot? Moved slower than a Soviet bread line and occasionally forgot it was about time for a murder to be solved. But Marko was having fun nonetheless, so there’s that.

Надзвичайно атмосферний детективчик з колоритною лексикою Львова. Сюжет цікавий, подекуди простий, подекуди захоплюючий, нічого надзвичайного, але непогано. Атмосфера компенсує все! Надзвичайно гарно і талановито описано, ніби сам потрапляєш у ці часи, в нічне місто.

Із мінусів для мене стало те, що стиль автора іноді здається зневажливим або стереотипним щодо жіночих персонажів і це не дуже приємно читати, враховуючи всі скандали, у які потрапляв автор твору, який асоціює себе з головним героєм. Іу

Те, що я ціную у Винничука - це саме атмосфера. Бурхлива, безперервна, драйвова (та пробачить мені автор це слово у даній ситуації). Були моменти, коли складно було читати львівську ґвару, але у тому й сенс - поглинути в історію цілком, на усі 110 відсотків, тому що навіть оця ґвара - це незамінний елемент Львову 30-х та історій автора загалом.
P.S. Для мене несподівано, але автор ще й у детективи вміє)

Спершу мені було трохи нуднувато, але не можу пояснити чому.
Це чудовий детектив з однією сюжетною лінією у декораціях і з масою лексики та цікавинок Львова 1938 року.
Особлива насолода для мене – те, як автор з любов'ю і пристрастю описує жінок-героїнь. Закохуєшся на раз!
Дуже хочеться читати серію далі, чим я і займуся.

Власне, прочитав «Нічного репортера», аби розуміти контекст і головних героїв вже наступної книги пана Винничука « Вілла Деккера».
Сюжет не перенасичений другорядними лініями, головний персонаж харизматичний, мова тексту теж досить легка до читання. Досить хороша детективна історія, яка мотивує до наступного епізоду з пригод Марка Криловича.

Дуже сподобалась мова!
Читаєш — і ніби занурюєшся в газетні хроніки тих часів. І закрут історії - не злий.

Але не сподобалось, що герой вийшов гультіпака-пияк, що часом натрапляє в репортерській роботі на щось цінне і хоч з того живе. Але частіше натрапляє на жіночок. І вони в нього або богині з розкішними стегнами, або тіла, спраглі до близькості. Третього не дано. Ех.

Небанальна детективна історія з інтригою, переслідуваннями, вбивствами і шантажем. Мені сподобалося -цікаво, динамічно і легко читається. Історичний фон книги, описи міста Лева і його колориту, дотепно, гарна українська мова з львівським субдіалектом. Я дійсно отримала задоволення від книги!

Yuri Vynnychuk is a Ukrainian writer with a wide oeuvre, including fantasy, adventure and historical fiction. His short story, Embroidered Worlds, was the lead entry and provided the title for the recent anthology of Ukrainian Science Fiction and Fantasy published in English translation, “Embroidered Worlds” (https://www.atthisarts.com/product/em...). Vynnchuk was born in 1952 in the western Ukrainian city of Stanislaviv (currently Ivan-Frankivsk) where he was educated in its university. He moved to Lviv where he was better able to avoid the Soviet authorities annoyed by his independent creative ways. In Lviv he worked as a ghost-writer, a journalist and involved himself in the theatre before being able to go public starting in the waning Soviet days of Perestroika.

His novel, originally published in Kharkiv in 2019, introduces the journalist - the ‘night reporter’ - Marko Krylovych who covers the criminal underground of pre-war, pre-Soviet, 1938 Lviv. An inveterate womanizer who can’t keep out of trouble, Krylovych investigates a murder involving corrupt politicians and businessmen. The novel is distinctly and delightfully noirish and very beautifully evokes the city of Lviv on the cusp of leaving Polish domination for that of the Soviet Union and Russia. The solid translation from Ukrainian to English was done by Michael Naydan and Alla Perminova. If one cares to, the book is also available on audible where it is narrated by the voice actor Mark J. Royse. “The Night Reporter” is the first of a series with three more novels featuring Marko Krylovych, published from 2019 to 2023, detailing his exploits into the Soviet era. All three of these subsequent noves are still waiting to be translated.

I was pleased that the dog wasn't killed in this fascinating noirish novel originally written in 1979-80 but that could not be published at the time under Soviet censorship. It must have led the translators a merry chase, not only because of Vynnychuk's style, but because he endeavored to replicate the language of 1938 Lviv. The belly side of Lviv was the fascination for me - the references to Jews, the Germans and Poles, the types of local criminals, prostitutes, and the politics happening in the world beyond at a pivotal time with Hitler on the doorstep. There were certainly allusions I missed due to ignorance, especially in the parts about the batyar culture. For example why does a lanterned street in Chapter 3 remind one of Franz Josef? I loved the tropes, like the gumshoe who can't keep a wife - or sleep - or make money, and the demented psychopath dentist-torturer. There is a painting on the wall of an even tireder gumshoe "a portrait...by a provincial painter who used a paintbrush instead of an artist's brush" - pure Vynnychuk, the master of satire. He's more seriously descriptive with his vignettes of Lviv, a place he clearly loves: "you crawl like a cockroach, because everywhere there are market tents, slaughterhouses, tons of people, everyone wants to sell you something. They peek through windows, they shout. It's not a street, but a continuous bazaar." And his main character also draws you in: "Or maybe it just seemed that way to me. Many things appear to me that never really happen in reality."
