What do you get when you mix sapphic
Do Revenge
with an ancient Korean fairytale and lots of mysogynistic a$$holes? Apparently it's Her Tale of Shim Chong and my goodness was this good.
The premise: two fifteen-year-old girls from opposite ends of the track find themselves making the same wish: to leave this world behind. One of them is about to be wed to a Chancellor twice her age, the other is a beggar struggling to survive.
When the two meet, both begin to hope that the other can offer them a way out of their predicament - but escaping from a society that hates women is going to be harder than anyone expects.
What I thought: this series is so many things, a love story, a tale of survival, a harrowing portrait of the treatment of women in ancient Korea, a character study.
Every time I thought I'd figured these two out, the author would pull the rug out from under me and add more depth. The author never lets you forget that these are two kids being put through trials that would break the average grown-up, and the artwork and story remain really respectful of that. That said, there are a lot of dark moments, and the author doesn't pull any punches when she puts her readers through the wringer.
Pick this up if you're in the mood for a story of resilience, ingenuity, and hope. You will not be disappointed.

Dziś przychodzę z jednym z kwiecistych postów, które udało mi się wykonać dość spontanicznie. I nie ukrywam taka sceneria idealnie pasuje do pierwszego tomu "Jej opowieść o Shim Chong".
Opiekująca się niewidomym ojcem wioskowa żebraczka, gotowa zrobić dla niego wszystko. Panna młoda zmuszona do wyjścia za mąż za kogoś, kogo zupełnie nie chce. Przed Wami oparta na koreańskiej baśni historia o dwóch młodych kobietach które połączyło zrządzenie losu, wspólne marzenie i... płomienne uczucie?
Manhwa nie tylko zachwyca swoim wydaniem i pięknymi soczystymi barwami ilustracjami, ale i intryguje skrywaną w sobie opowieścią, gdzie krzyżują się losy żebraczki i pięknej przyszłej panny młodej, które pozornie wiodą inne żywota, to jednak łączy je wspólne życzenie - by siła wyższa zabrała je z ego świata, gdyż same nie potrafią tego zrobić.
Historia, w którym dosłownie za wszystko winione są kobiety czy to los niewidomego ojca, który popadł w ubóstwo, czy też los męża, który po ślubie upadł na zdrowiu, a także na nagłą zmianę pogody. Wiara w której to kobiety uważane są za mniej doskonałe od mężczyzn i niemogące wyzbyć się karmy.
Trudno mi ocenić ten tomik bo z jednej strony jest to wprowadzenie do lekko zmodyfikowanej wersji "historii Shim Chong" na której opierały się autorki manhwy, ale zarazem jest to dość krótka seria i niestety choć wizualnie wielokrotnie mnie zachwyciła, a końcówka, jak i pierwsze strony bardzo zaciekawiła, czuję lekki niedosyt historią, przez co nie mogę powiedzieć, że jest to jedna z najlepszych tytułów tego formatu przeze mnie w tym roku przeczytanych.
Nie zmienia to jednak faktu, że jestem bardzo ciekawa kontynuacji, ale także z chęcią - jeśli tylko będzie dostępny polski przekład - zapoznam się z oryginalną powieścią na której autorki Seri i Biwan postanowiły się zainspirować i opowiedzieć w innej formie tę opowieść.
Moja ocena to 4/5⭐

Aquest gl té una història que enganxa moltíssim, amb elements de folclore i siguent prou acurada históricament. Cal dir, per tant, que tan sols espere que no acabe de manera tràgica aquesta sèrie.

por dios con lo mucho que odio a los hombres cómo me van a dar este manhwa donde son TODOS (absolutamente t o d o s) una BASURA !! nefastos !! forros !! infelices !!!! los odio.
El dibujo me pareció hermoso, y el final 😭😭 es una historia muy fuerte, que logró volver a hacerme darme cuenta que no debe haber existido nada peor que ser mujer antes de 1970 aprox. Muy deprimente por momentos pero muy interesante la mentalidad de las mujeres de esta historia, más que nada de la peli naranja porque la prota es una prota fuerte como la mayoría de las protagonistas, pero la madame era CUNNING tipo tenía otro tipo de fortaleza que me pareció re interesante de leer

Uma releitura de uma lenda sul-coreana, por uma perspectiva feminista, reimaginando a vida de duas mulheres que possuem pontos de inícios tão diferentes, mas que possuem vidas entrelaçadas.
Shim Chong, na lenda é a representação ideal de uma mulher submissa e que permaneceu pura. Na história, ela é uma menina que perdeu a mãe e é pedinte, pois seu pai é cego (e, na história, consequentemente inválido). É especialmente interessante, como ela observa a diferença de comportamento da cidade assim que souberam de sua miséria (com olhos com compaixão) e, após alguns anos se passarem (como uma inconveniência).
Shim Chong se depara com a nova patroa, Madame, da família mais influente da cidade. Existe uma aura de mistério ao redor de Madame, pois ela veste uma máscara para quase todas as interações com pessoas, a fim de manter sua posição.
Há alguns elementos fantásticos, muito mais para estabelecer a ambientação e a espiritualidade daquele povo.
O que ganha principal destaque é como a história confronta a misoginia, os papeis esperados de uma mulher, os diferentes modos de como a misoginia irá intersseccionar com outros fatores e, consequentemente, afetar a vida de cada mulher. A história consegue articular bem como em uma sociedade patriarcal, nenhuma mulher poderá manter poder por muito tempo; e como suas vidas são resumidas a esses papeis secundários a fim de serem controlados e esquecidos.
O romance entre Shim Chong e Madame é um frescor, pois consegue balancear a angústia e anseio das personagens com as limitações e controles postos sobre corpos femininos. Eu poderia falar por horas sobre essa história e como as escritoras conseguiram humanizar mulheres, sem diminuir suas potência e a agência, assim como confrontar a misoginia institucionalizada e como isso afeta a vida de todos.

Folklore with a twist. Really effective social commentary. Pleasant setting perfect balance of mystery and misery without being disgustingly tragic or boring. Recommended!!!

En una aldea llamada Dohwa vive Shim Chong, una joven de 15 años que se dedica a mendigar en las calles. Cuidando de un padre ciego y sin madre, la cual falleció al poco tiempo de darla a luz, Chong sobrevive como puede pidiendo caridad desde que tenía 7 años; ocupándose desde entonces de conseguir el sustento que la mantengan a ella y a su padre invidente con vida. Viviendo en una choza, vistiendo harapos y yendo siempre sucia, Chong no puede sobrevivir solo de la caridad porque la gente de su alrededor ya está cansada de su trágica vida. Si bien de niña sentían lástima por ella, ahora ya no es así y la joven, además de las penurias de la calle, debe robar para comer. Y es que, por mucho que rece porque Buda le conceda su deseo, este nunca se cumple.
Pero, entonces, su suerte - ¿o su infortunio? - cambian cuando, en el río, encuentra a una mujer que parece haberse o estar ahogándose. La muchacha, vestida de rojo, es de una belleza etérea y Chong va rauda para ayuda a la desconocida antes de que pierda la vida. Resulta que la muchacha noble del río es la novia que, al día siguiente, se casará con el ministro Jiang. Como agradecimiento por su ayuda, la joven le da una pulsera a Chong y le asegura que, el día de su boda, será tratada con la amabilidad que merece. Ante esa oportunidad de poder comer cuanto desee y no sobras, Chong va a la casa del ministro y allí presencia la boda de la joven con el ministro, un hombre muchísimo más mayor que ella. El encuentro fatídico de ambas en el río y después en la boda, harán que el destino de ambas muchachas quede unido y que, al volver a verse, la señora Jiang invite a Shim Chong a su casa, haciendo que la joven paria decida aprovecharse de la ingenuidad y de la caridad de esa señoritinga. Mas, entre ambas, se irán fraguando todo una amalgama de sentimientos que ninguna de las dos podrá controlar.
Haciendo un retelling Girls'love de un famoso cuento coreana, Seri y Biwan nos presentan La leyenda de Shim Chong, una ficción histórica que nos relata el amor de dos mujeres de distintas clases sociales en un mundo patriarcal en el que deberán luchar con uñas y dientes para sobrevivir de sus miserables destinos. Her Tale of Shim Chong took me by surprise when I finally got around to reading what I thought would be something I would eventually drop after a few chapters.
What I actually found was an immensely thoughtful tale of women - not just the two protagonists - women doing their best to survive in a world that has knives pointing at them, ready to wound at the slightest opening. Though that's already enough of a hook, what really pulled me in was the careful treatment of class dynamics in the world. The difference in station between our sacrificial bride and the titular beggar-girl is like night and day. Their struggles are completely different. Chong is right to call bullshit on equating the struggles of having to fight for your next meal and in-law political intrigue, but she throws herself into it alongside her new 'friend' nonetheless, in what starts out as a sugar mommy kind of situation and deepens into something so much more.
It's very easy for a topic like this to devolve into almost pornographic misery, with nothing but examples on examples of the ways women are subjugated and have their wings clipped not only during life but even after death (ancestral cemetery scene was a real wow), but this book keeps a hopeful undertone in the middle of, or despite, it all.
We start out already knowing how this is going to end, right from chapter one, but the journey there has given so much food for thought to me. As this series was only brought to my attention with the announcement of a second season/volume, I write this having finished the first season, and regardless of how things are going to go, I give this a 5 star rating, simply for the way the telling has been going, the thoughtful dialogue, the palpable class violence, the way it even helped me understand more of myself while keeping me rooting for our two protagonists the whole time.
Can't recommend it enough. While some parts may seem over-the-top at times (for me the monk is an absolute mood-killer), I believe there's a lot one can gain from reading this.

Tytułowa bohaterka tej manhwy, Shim Chong jest żebraczką walczącą o swoje i ojca przetrwanie. Dziewczyna jest powszechnie pogardzana przez mieszkańców swojej wioski (chociaż początkowo czuli do niej litość). Pewnego dnia bohaterka ratuje życie pewnej kobiecie, która okazuje się być narzeczoną pewnego kanclerza. W ramach wdzięczności Panna młoda zaprasza Shim Chong na swoje zaręczyny. Między dwiema kobietami rodzi się nić porozumienia, która wkrótce przekształca się w coś więcej.
To nie jest typowe girls’ love. Ten tytuł jest pełna przygnębiających scen, które wręcz bolą, gdy się ten tytuł czyta. Dziewczyny mimo różnic klasowych są bardzo nieszczęśliwe, marzą nawet o śmi3rci (nie próbują jednak się z@bić. Humoru i gagów w tej manhwie jest wyjątkowo mało, dużo więcej jest zaś melancholii.
Relacja między dziewczynami jest delikatna, ale pełna drobnych gestów (robią wspólne kąpiele, odgarniają sobie nawzajem kosmyki włosów). Widać, że się wspierają.
Kreska w tej manhwie jest zaś taka piękna! 😍 Cały ten komiks został wydany w pełnym kolorze, można więc podziwiać staranne ilustrowane panele. Najbardziej mi się podobają kwiaty, one są prześlicznie narysowane.
Będę kontynuować tę serię (jest ona zakończona w siedmiu i jednym dodatkowym tomie). Przez smutny nastrój w tym tomie bardzo się boję, że miłość między głównymi bohaterkami okaże się tragiczna. Ciekawość jednak zwycięża, sięgnę więc po kolejne tomy. Zapowiada się naprawdę dobra historia z wątkiem zakazanego romansu.

Ein sehr schöner, wenngleich auch heftiger erster Band. Man lernt vor allem Shin Chong kennen, die wirklich kein einfaches Leben hat, und irgendwie das Interesse der neuen Gemahlin des Kanzlers geweckt hat. Chong macht einige Dinge, die nicht gut sind, aber ich kann auch ihre Sicht verstehen und warum sie es tut - um zu überleben. Ihr Vater scheint mir dadurch sehr naiv, auch wenn es stimmt, dass Stehlen nicht gut ist. Der Mönch ist mir auch suspekt. Wenn Chong bei der Gemahlin ist - mir fällt gerade auf, dass wir ihren Namen gar nicht kennen - erkennt man noch mehr ihren Standesunterschied. Manche Dinge, die sie sagt, haben sogar Hand und Fuß und sind realistisch, ihre Art und ihr Auftreten werden in dieser Gesellschaft aber nicht wirklich akzeptiert. Ein paar gefühlvolle Situationen gab es auch schon, die das ein oder andere anspielen. Ich glaube zwar, dass die Gemahlin Chong nur helfen wollte, andererseits bin ich kein Fan von dem Trope mit dem „Aufhübschen“ und „das Äußere verändern“. Ich finde diese andere Frau, die Chong immer ihren Tod prophezeit auch echt spannend und interessant. Das Ende lässt mich aber sehr nach dem Wille nach mehr zurück. Zum einen möchte ich wissen, wie Chong nun reagieren wird und wie sich ihre Beziehung nun entwickelt. Andererseits finde ich das ganze Setting aber halt auch super spannend. Freue mich auf jeden Fall schon auf Band 2!

If I could change one thing about Goodreads' organization it would be that I wish I could mark manga/manhua by completed series rather than volume. I'm not marking each of the seven volumes separately, they're the same story. So like. This volume 1 review is a placeholder for the whole thing.
This was lovely. The last few books I've read have all been about the pressures and constraints of misogyny and patriarchy, and the dehumanization of women in ways both large and small, and this book certainly followed that trend. However, interspersed with the depressingly real injustices and double-standards and stifling expectations is a beautiful love story of two women who learn how to re-find themselves through each others' support after their sense of selves have been stripped utterly away by their society. It's heartening, and hopeful, and maybe just a little indulgent, and I loved it.
also, while the art starts out as perfectly servicable for a webtoon, by around the halfway mark you can really see the author's skill refining, and by the end the art is genuinely really good.

listen I went into this story thinking it was going to be cute and not much else, though the story does have some cute scenes, it is so much more than that. They pulled on my heartstrings even making me tear up. The many scenes show the hardships of being a woman in those times, many of them having to do many things to survive. The blaming, the shunning, the rumors, these are what the women face if even one slip up. Even when protecting themself from a man's watchful gaze and wondering hand, the lady is at fault. if she dresses nicely, she is a whore. if she wears make-up to cover her scars, she is trying to open her legs. These are all things the main character; and the other women have to face, it is truly upsetting. This book highlights the struggle of ancient women but still holds a lot of truth about what modern women will face. No one of the characters is truly good, everyone is a shade of grey, which makes them feel alive with real motivation. Although what i think is the best thing about this book is the cute scene the two main girls have.

Año nuevo, ¡Reseñas nuevas!. Este Manhwa lo acabe hace ya un par de semanas, pero es que todavía lo tengo muy presente. Creo que alguna vez he comentado que suelo leer poco Yuri porque sus historias me parecen excesivamente sexualizadas o con demasiados clichés, pero creo que Sería y Biwan han sabido traer un retelling (que raro se me hace decirlo en este formato) de una historia china, sin caer demasiado en los clichés y, los que trae, ha sabido cogerlos y tratarlos bien.
El POV de criada y señora o pobre y rica (diferencias de clase social vaya) siempre me ha gustado, le da chicha al asunto y lo hace muy divertido y trágico por ambas partes, pero no esperaba el slow burn y el descubrimiento de la sexualidad y el amor (al menos por parte de nuestra Shim Chong), pero también el hablar sobre las cargas que suponen las familias (la pobreza de Chong y el matrimonio de conveniencia de la dama Jang).... Creo que tiene un buen comienzo y espero descubrir más sobre ellas dos a lo largo de esta aventura 🥺.

El dibujo me parece precioso, pero la trama me está gustando el doble. Me gustan ambos personajes femeninos y cómo podemos ver el papel de dos mujeres en dos contextos sociales completamente distintos que, además, son víctimas de una sociedad extremadamente machista que se rige por los principios de Confucio. Llega a ser frustrante el ver lo que se espera de ellas simplemente por ser mujer, mientras que los hombres son libres de hacer lo que quieran. Al monje me dan ganas de colgarle de un árbol... por el cuello...
Y por último y lo MÁS importante, mis niñas. Qué bonitas son y qué momentos más tiernos han tenido entre ellas. Son lindísimas y quiero que todo les salga bien, que se conozcan más y sean super felices juntas. Pero tiene pinta de que en el camino se vienen curvas y va a haber muchísimo drama como buena historia de época.
¿Lo único malo? Que los volúmenes salen cada 3 meses y solo queda esperar.

I gotta say peeps, this was a very interesting gay manhwa that's actually based around a Korean folktale!
Y'know it's very hard to find a decent shoujo ai story. I gotta say, there is quite a lot of sexism from the asshole men in this manwha (except Shims dad), so my blood was boiling like hell bois!
This shoujo ai story is pretty disturbing to say the least, like it's about a poor teen girl and a teen bride who had been roped into marrying an emperor decades older than her.
Then the two girls meet, the emperor gets sick and the girls face challenges with their forbidden love.
Unfortunately the English fan translation ceased for this unique Yuri manhwa so I'm pretty disappointed I didn't get to see the ending :(
However we gotta applaud to the talented people behind this manhwa who are Seri and Bi-wan! It was such a very good read that people should definitely check this manhwa out ^^

La leyenda de Shim Chong
es un webtoon que esperaba con ganas que se publicase, puesto que lo leí hará un par de años y me encantó, y por fin lo tenemos.
Por supuesto, lo he disfrutado muchísimo más ahora al poder leerlo en físico, en páginas más grandes, y con una traducción más cuidada. Además, venía con unas postales muy bonitas. La verdad que es una edición bastante mimada. Yendo al contenido del libro, y sin adelantarme mucho a los acontecimientos, solo puedo decir que el primer volumen es un principio que te engancha desde el primer momento. La historia es un retelling sáfico de una leyenda tradicional coreana, así que nos ambientamos en una sociedad arcaica con fuertes valores respecto a la nobleza, familia y la religión. Las protagonistas no pueden ser más diferentes, pero eso no hace más que crear unos contrastes muy interesantes entre las dos.
En conclusión, este primer volumen de La leyenda de Shim Chong es un muy buen comienzo para una historia absolutamente inolvidable. ¡Lo recomiendo muchísimo!

This was seriously so well written, I'm obsessed, and happy, and mad, and sad, but so overjoyed that it had a happy ending. No doomed lesbians for once!
No but the portrayal of the hardships women have to go through in the world was so well done, I was enraged multiple times during the story and very satisifed with how it all ended. I liked how there was first drama between the many women in the story, but slowly you and the characters realise who the real enemy is... the men. gasp!

I liked the drawings style, the social commentary, the intrigue and some of the twist, and the ending (which is rare, so yay!).
I've read a review somewhere else that said "don't read this if you like being happy". And I cannot say I disagree, most of the story follows a "everything goes bad and then it gets worse" line. But there's some sparks here and there. And when the characters who have been victimized decides that enough is enough, it's nice. I support women's revenge <3

This manhua is a historical romance that's based on a Korean folktale. The story follows 2 very different women find themselves making the same wish - to leave this world behind.
I can't stand the village nor the noble folk, but damn. I'm glad everyone got their happy ending after so much drama & tension. Overall, a good story that I didn't mind rereading & I liked the art style.
