Based on a Korean folktale, two very different women find themselves making the same wish - to leave this world behind. One is Shim Chong, a young beggar living off the kindness of others to support herself and her blind father. The other is the bride-to-be of old Chancellor Jang, sold off to him for the sake of her family. When Shim Chong rescues this new bride from the river, their relationship triggers both love and hidden intentions. But will these two women be able to find their way forth in a world that favors men?
This is a really good sapphic and feminist manhwa that is not afraid to show you religious rites, practices and even beliefs are built on misogyny and the subjugation of women, here the example takes place in China and uses mostly Buddhism but it's true for every single religion. The romance is heartbreakingly beautiful, they deserved their happy ending so bad after all this, they both hated their life so much that they were ready to die on their first meeting on the shore, but only by meeting again for the purpose of using one another like the world taught them to did they discover that if they have each other then all these rules we're forced into don't matter, it's only once you get rid off them that you can truly be free. I have not read the side story yet I'm hoping for more Ditchdok she also deserves a good ending pls

Absolutely fantastic feminist storytelling. A beautiful story about female perseverance, female complexity, female intelligence, female perspectives, and love and hope.
What do we do in the face of patriarchy, of violent misogyny? Do we keep our heads down and conform in order to protect ourselves? Does that even protect us? Or do we fight back? Do we even know how? And what happens after?
An absolute must read! And the sapphic romance made it all come together for me :)
this was my second time reading this manhwa and god i enjoyed it, and suffered at the same time, just as much as the first. their story is so beautiful
This is one hell of a ride!! A gut-wrenching, feminist GL/Yuri phenomenon. Think ‘Fingersmith’ by Sarah Waters, but with a dash of fantasy and a heavy dose of misogyny — that’s the best way to sum up this period manga. But don’t worry, the ending and bonus stories totally make up for the emotional damage! 🙂↕️
I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve straight-up ugly cried—not just from sadness, but from sheer rage at the things that unfolded in this period drama. This manga doesn’t just tug at your heartstrings, it yanks them out and stomps on them! And yet, despite the emotional devastation, it’s an easy 10/10 for me 🫠
First of all, I thank Sappho that I found this manga after it was fully completed because goddess help me, the cliffhangers in this story are bru. tal. Seri’s storytelling is so immersive that even when I found myself thinking, “Why am I still reading this?” (because, srsly, the triggers in this book are a lot), I just could not put it down!
And speaking of being grateful to Sappho—Mother Ditchdeok (뺑덕어미), my beloved, my wife... She is the MVP of this entire manga. Her arc, though not given a ton of screen time, adds so much depth and color to the story. I was beyond grateful to see her fleshed out more in the side story volume because wow, what a character! And ngl, she’s a total MILF too, and I shamelessly swooned every time she made an appearance!
But beyond my MILF obsession, what really got me was how this story handled the struggles of women — both in the past and in cultures that still experience the similar discriminations, prejudices and manipulations today. The romance in this manga definitely takes a backseat to the harsh realities of misogyny, classism, and survival, but it works! Shim Chong’s journey is fascinating, heartbreaking, and raw, and even though I consider her love story bittersweet, I still found myself beyond satisfied with how it wrapped up.
All in all, ‘Her Tale of Shim Chong’ is a ✨feminist GL gem✨ It’s heavy, it’s triggering, and it leaves you emotionally wrecked for days, but it’s so worth it!! If I ever find the courage to go through the emotional turmoil again, I’d absolutely reread it…
Trigger warnings: domestic abuse, suicidal thoughts, misogyny, misogyny, misogyny, sexual harassment, gore, animal cruelty, and domestic homicide attempts. Read at your own risk!
Essa foi a melhor coisa que eu já li na vida, muito obrigada gringa do tiktok por me apresentar a essa obra-prima. Posso dizer com tranquilidade que virou minha obra literária favorita.
I am immensely glad to have come across this story. It has fuelled a rage in me, one that was already burning to begin with. It has taught me a lot, about the perseverance and madness these women must have had to stand up against the society. I love love love this story and it will always remain close to my heart🤍
But I was such an idiot to read this when I'm already so stressed and down. What a tragic but beautiful tale.
P.S if my language looks formal it is because I was writing assignments and articles💀
Literally changed my brain chemistry one of the best sapphic romances I’ve ever read. But didn’t even just love it for the main two’s relationship but also for the topics handled and the other woman in the story. So good overall in every aspect. 💫
The story critiques patriarchy, but I felt it didn’t fully address how patriarchy also impacts men. While the focus is on women’s oppression, the men are portrayed as one-dimensional villains, only seeking power and wealth. I understand the story’s focus on women’s struggles, but I think it could have explored the damaging effects of patriarchy on both genders more thoroughly. For example, even Shim Chong’s father, despite being poor, is passive and doesn’t try to better his situation, which left him feeling too underdeveloped as a character.
This was such a heartbreaking feminist telling. A story about female oppression, female complexity, their strength, and their desire to find a place of their own. It was such a beautiful story and a beautiful ending to it.
genuinely one the best things I've read this year amazing splendid spectacular wonderful artfully done gorgeous beautiful cute heart wrenching lovely AHHHHHHH I love it I love THEM so much
menos mal que tuvieron un final feliz y todos los hombres de mierda recibieron su merecido porque si no me mwordeaba (me dio fiaca poner que leí todos los tomos)
