If you want to find a vampire in Savannah these days, all you have to do is throw a rock and you’ll hit one. Colin and Adrik are back, and they’ve both brought their own brand of trouble. Abel is caught in the middle, and Katie will have to walk a fine line between friendships to save him even if it means pressuring Emmaline to make nice with dear old dad.
But Katie has more to worry about than just the vampire problem in town. There’s a werelock stalking the city, and Jackson's and Kali’s fates are both on the line if Katie doesn’t figure out Ethan’s secret and kill him before he takes his pound of flesh.
Can she stop a vampire war and kill a werelock? The alternative isn’t an option.
Luanne Bennett is an author of fantasy and the supernatural. Born in Chicago, she lives in Georgia these days where she writes full time and doesn’t miss a thing about the cubicles and conference rooms of her old life. When she isn’t writing or dreaming up new stories, she’s usually cooking or tending a herd of felines and basset hounds. Look for book three of the Katie Bishop series coming this spring!
“Daddy Darkest” is another great installment in the Katie Bishop series . I have said over and over again that the characters in this series are some of the most interesting and diverse people you could ever read about. This installment is no exception in that regards.
This time a Emmaline’s estranged father, Adrik had come back to town wanting help keeping Lucius, the mad man and his enemy from capturing him. He also swears he wants to establish a relationship with her. Of course they aren’t the only two people struggling in the relationship drama department as Kali’s possessive and abusive ex, Ethan is in town and is stalking her. Not only is he stalking he is attacking her friends and customers at the tattoo shop as well.
On a lighter note, Katie has hired a new tattoo artist, an ex con named Carver. He is fast and very good but has a temper when it comes to bullies. Katie also thinks there may be something else about him he is keeping a secret.
There is so much going on in this installment and overall with all of the fighting it is also a more serious read. There is a certain darkness in the fabric of the storyline that left me with a feeling of dread and sadness at the end. This is not a criticism but rather a statement of what is. I for one love these chat and series and cannot wait for the next installment.
Aside from my usual gripes, it seems there were a lot of weird decisions on the characters’ part when it came to moving the story along. A lot of fluff and dragging, but Katie was weird in the first half of the book. She kept doing things that seemed so… unexplainable. I couldn’t tell you what because it’s been like two days but I remember the feeling of irritation and confusion when she’d say or do something. I mean, constantly not telling her husband stuff that happens so he doesn’t go alpha on her? Then why did you marry him?? I hate lying.
And going after bad guys without backup? The dragon’s only so strong and she doesn’t exactly act like a powerhouse so I don’t understand where her thinking comes from when she acts indestructible. But the lagging. That’s what gets me most. Abel’s getting tortured but because they have a lot on their plate, they have to prioritize. And that kills me, the choosing to leave someone to suffer cause “there’s nothing you can do”.
Overall this series drives me nuts but I love the idea of Savannah. And it’s only now occurred to me that Katie was in a previous trilogy?? So now I have to go read that. I just hope it doesn’t drive me too crazy.
“I know Adrik is like a brother to you, but you better keep a short leash on him.”
I couldn’t have said it better myself… Adrik is… Adrik, some new adjectives should be invented to describe the guy, but why bother… they wouldn’t possibly make him justice. Fortunately for us Katie is more than equipped to deal with him, and with Colin, as both are back, but it doesn’t end there: a werelock is staling the city, trouble usually likes company 😉 So once more Katie has to multitask: convincing Emmaline to be nice to Adrik (while Abel is stuck in the middle), prevent a vampire war, and kill the werelock before he destroys her friends lives. Katie has once more her work cut up for her: save the day or… or save the day, not to ever think of the alternative 😉
„Daddy Darkest” is the eight installment in the “Katie Bishop” Series by Luanne Bennett, a gritty urban fantasy, that has continued to feel as fresh, original, captivating and innovative as in the very beginning, and whose unapologetic heroine is already well known to all fans of intelligent, well-crafted UF stories, who rely on carefully world-building and interesting characters to bring the story across, and in which UF – fortunately! – is not merely an acronym for ‘Unreasonable-amounts of full-up-sex”, sorry (not sorry) about the rant, but regrettably there have been a lot of ‘that’ taking over the UF in the last year(s), so let me be very clear, when I tell you that “Katie Bishop” is urban fantasy at core: realistic stories, set in a world much like our own, with the sole difference of displaying fantastic elements and creatures, who live side-by-side with us.
Luanne Bennett’s writing style is – as always – amazing; the book is well-written and carefully edited; the story is fast-paced, a veritable page-tuner with a balanced mix of fast-action and in-deep description, a smart plot, fully enjoyable from start to finish, a surely wonderful addition to the series, that despite of technically being the seventh of this series can also be read as stand-alone by any newcomer to the verse, who will undoubtedly pick the previous instalments right afterwards, because let us be real… one book is not enough 😉
Katie Bishop is strong, relatable, and witty, doing the job, just because it must be done, but she isn’t a kind of some untouchable superhero, better-than-thou hero set in some sublime pedestal. Quite the opposite, Katie is a relatable character, with very human limitations, while remaining strong and focused on her assignments, very supportive of her friend and unstoppable against her enemies, and most importantly an ever-evolving character, which makes every re-reading of the series worthwhile. From the very first adventure (“Crossroads of Bones”) to the present book Katie’s development has been not only steadily, but fully believable and utterly realistic.
This 8th book to the series was much more captivating for me than the previous one. I loved all the action and the sweet bitter end. This Katie Bishop series has been an engaging series. I really hope there's more to come.
When you read this novel to the series, it makes you question, what is good and what is evil. Are we just products of our making, our environment, our influence and our need for survival, or is someone truly good or evil. Then, the question of who has the right to define whether a person is good or bad. So many thoughts and questions swirling around. Yes I know. That was pretty deep but that's what this novel brought to mind.
All I gotta say is that Jackson is a saint of a husband lol. I'm very much looking for more books to be added to this series and can't wait.
Before I go off and forget what has really been bothering me... Why did Jackson kill Ethan's brother by taking his head off and it was no big deal but then they can't figure out how to kill Ethan? Was the brother not a werelock too? I must've missed that part...
This was full of Katie's typical bullshit where she keeps the truth from everyone to prevent them from having feelings but she would freak the hell out if anyone did that to her. Also, why does she think she's so badass?
Everyone: "It's too dangerous, be careful."
Katie: "Psh, I'm a fucking dragon, I've got this!"
Also Katie... *Oh, no! These bad guys knocked me out before my dragon could do anything and I have no fighting skills...*
And why does everything have to be a meeting? Just talk on the phone. There's no way these people are driving around that much just to bitch about who hasn't told who what yet!

And oh what drama that father brought. Another knockout from Luanne Bennett in the Katie Bishop Series, Daddy Darkest, Book 8. Am not sure how much more Savanna can handle in this chilling world of magic and creatures killing each other and the humans being in the middle of it all is just a bit of chaos in the mix. Let’s just add a little fae, and watch the big bad wolf in the midst to make the drama more interesting to the fold while the vampires run rampant in the city causing mayhem chasing daddy darkest and see what you get. A damn good read, that’s what. This was a fun and exciting read with plenty of twists, turns and lots of fun characters that made it all worthwhile to read. A great storyline that will keep you turning the page and keep going forward until it is done.
So good but how come Jackson can kill Ethan's brother who is the same as him w a tree but Ethan needs this super hard, extra special death? Also Katie says only her and Kali have seen the consequences of Ethan's attacks in person in the cottage but he attacked Jackson first before even Katie and the story/ series is great but the whole ' I'm a dragon, remember? I'm a dragon, they can't hurt me, etc etc etc' is getting dumb she gets herself knocked out and captured and half shifted more than she doesn't and mostly she uses her ' talons' bc she's always stuck or something to bully men around, not that they don't deserve it but she's mighty hypocritical about her self righteousness. I dunno seems like some rushed thru mistakes and Katie needs to balls up. When she does she's amazing but she's kinda stupid when she's a person.
Katie and the gang at their very best!! Emmeline’s father is in big trouble. He’s been running from very ancient and powerful vampires, The Romans, for quite some time, but they’ve now turned up in Savannah and he’s cornered. He needs all the help he can get, especially from his estranged daughter, but will she come to his aid and what will be the cost? I’m not a huge fan of Vampires, but Adrik’s story makes compulsive reading. That coupled with a stalking warlock ex and keeping an eye on poor Abel, get ready for fireworks! We find out a little more about bad-boy Carter, Katie’s newest employee, but what is he hiding? The action is fast and furious and will keep you turning the pages!
If you want to find a vampire in Savannah these days, all you have to do is throw a rock and you’ll hit one. Colin and Adrik are back, and they’ve both brought their own brand of trouble. Things just never seem to let up for Katie and crew of the Crossroads Society. This was a good read and enjoyable from start to finish
This book was so good, I read it in one day. And with most awesome series, I wanted to hurry and read what was going to happen next, but I didn’t want the series to end.The whole series is fascinating and exciting and imaginative. Katie is the perfect protagonist. She’s nice, loyal, and has friends who love her as much as she loves them. As usual, her hands are full with more than one situation. Emmaline’s father is back in town, and this time he brings as much trouble as last time, if not more. Her new tattoo artist has a stalker X-boyfriend that is out to kill Jackson. Abel is still missing, and the tattoo artist she wants to hire has to be approved by her other employees. And if he’s hired, how will they all keep their secrets around him. I highly recommend this series.
After all this time, why doesn't Katie have better magical sense? She doesn't have a sharper sense of smell or hearing, no intuition for other magical creatures until their eyes change colors. Her dragon is largely reactive and doesn't really communicate with her ... it's like it's a drone or something. There's no evolution of Katie or her dragon. Way too static for the main character of this series.
I mainly enjoy the storytelling, the characters and some of the world built here, which is why I keep/kept reading. But it lacks growth, and that's disappointing.
Just finished another book in the Katie Bishop series. There was so much going on in this story I was kept wondering what would happen next. There were at least three story arcs going on at once and it was a thrill! I am pretty good at guessing what’s going to happen next in a book but this one really kept me on the edge of my seat.
If you’re interested in a well written series with characters that are not the usual vampires/werewolves, and we’re talking unique, then I can’t recommend the Katie Bishops stories more.
New hires at MagicInk: Is it a spoiler to think they might not be “normal”? We’ve already met Kali, know that she is “special” and that she has issues with her equally special but controlling warlock boyfriend. Those issues come to a head at the same time that there’s a vampire problem in Savannah. Old, powerful vampires. And another artist is hired at MagicInk to take up some of the load as all this drama unfolds! Another high-tempo story in the Katie Bishop universe. If you liked the others, you will not be disappointed.
Gabriel made a deal with Aldrik and now he’s back in town to collect. But the Romans have followed him and all hell is going to break loose. Katie and friends must figure out how to save Aldrik while avoiding the wrath of Kali’s ex.
I enjoyed the story, but have started to really miss some of Katie’s earlier relationships in these later books. Sugar, Sea Bass, and even Finn are left to the side and only called up when their muscle is a benefit to Katie. The author definitely lost something in the storytelling when Katie moved into the house with Jackson. Too bad.
Katie's story was great! It's full of friendship, laughter, love, and a kickass dragon!! I could see this story going on and on and never tiring of it. Luanne Bennett added great people along the way to keep you hooked. I want to know did these characters find love too, is Lucius coming back for Emmaline, so many great books ahead. Thank you for the great story that kept me glued to a book!
I loved everything about this series. I ave every book a 5 star rating. The characters are wonderful and there are a lot if them. This Author doesn't skip fleshing out their lives and feelings. There's a slow burn romance that gets better and better in each book. Read this series if you love fun characters, real friendship and intense story lines. You won't be disappointed.
This is a fantastic story in the Katie bishop series. It’s a well written, exciting, very entertaining and thrilling storyline that will have on the edge of your seat. The characters are intriguing, theres vampires, werelocks and twists and turns to keep you spinning. Simply put it’s a fantastic read!
I loved these books, everyone has some sort of supernatural gift, Katie is a Dragon and there are fae, vampires, were's and others. Katie runs a Tattoo shop as well as watching out for the residents in her area. There are plenty of supernatural battles in each book. I hope there will be more Katie Bishop books. Well worth five stars.
I enjoyed this exiting series. I loved all the interesting characters and hair raising plots. The one critique of individual characters would be, at times their dialog was “cliche”. They were definitely smart, but sometimes they didn’t seem so. May was the most “consistent” character, to me. Otherwise I read all of them!
Read the 7 books, like this author originality, but it really gets boring when you see Katie (the heroine of the series) being obtuse, straight acting like one minute she is this smart, strong women and the next like she doesn’t have a brain at all and having the weirdest dragon of all. Little disappointed.
Well what a roller coaster of emotions. This book was a great way to end. Ending. And getting ready for the next chapter. Sadness, coming of age and good things happening to good people. Thank you for writing this book. I have had to read it in one go. Now finished. I can go to bed. My husband as been grumbling!😁😁.
This was an interesting read. It was two stories in one. The werelock was very interesting and I enjoyed reading about him. The book had a lot going on at all times and was hard to put down. I think May is my favorite character! I look forward to the next book in the series.
Another great addition to the Katie Bishop series! This picks up right where the previous book leaves off. Katie and Jackson have their hands full with a new vampire in town and the chaos he brings! Lots of excitement makes for a great read!
I have read Luanne Bennett for many years and this series has a special spot in my heart the ability to carry the story and truly develop the characters to allow them to be be imperfect works well like magic ! Week done can’t wait for the next one !
This is hands down one of my favorite series. The characters all seem like old friends. I get so happy whenever a new book comes out. I can't get enough of Katie and her clan.
I truly enjoyed all eight books stepping me through Katie's life in Savannah. Her struggle with being a dragon and dealing with other beings, their powers, and their myths.
Another good read. Got extra cast members to the group a fae and hunter. Glad Able made it out, mama may always a badass. Suga is always a delight. Glad her powers are finally kicking in. Now the chameleon is dead. What happens next?
Another fun read! For me it bogged down in a couple of parts...almost too many side plots this time around. It all came around in the end and I'm excited to see more books with the new employees of MagicInk.
More vampires? I guess they're like roaches... when you see one, etc...
Excellent story! Katie is still interesting, but others are coming forth too . Once again, the dragon comes to life and those around her are happy about it!
